My orchid hobby started with one forced on to take from work. But now I'm glad that I did. Buying seedlings was my first choice because I wanted to learn how to grow and care for them. I've lost a few and others have continued to grow. I'm always glad to see new things happening with the plants.
Please do an update video on the seedlings growth.

This is a good topic. For some grower, like those in Western Australia and other places the strict bio protective laws. Plants are hard to get. Flasks are the only option to get certain plants. I cannot even import plants from other Australian states without using a select few nurseries that can quarantine and treat the plants...at extra cost. I am delighted to get already hardened seedlings and thrilled to be able to get adult plants. Seedlings can be a cheap alternative to blooming size plants, plus the first blooms are all the more exciting, in my opinion.

interesting, i didn't know there were so many restrictions in Australia! We're definetely spoiled for choices here in Europe, then. I agree, there's nothing more exciting than when a plant you brought up flowers for the first time!

Interesting conversation about seedlings. I have mixed feelings about them too. Although now at my age I wouldn’t buy them because I’d be lucky to see blooms in my lifetime. (We often say that at our age we don’t even buy green bananas). I also wanted to mention the “faux chive” you had in the pot. I’ve often had them in orchid pots and they remind me of a reed of some kind. It’s amazing how all those paphs and the hitch hiker have thrived in that pot for so long. Thanks for sharing an interesting repot session. 😀

thank you so much for watching! you're right, it's probably a type of reed, so funny that they keep appearing in orchid pots.

I was very discouraged when my seedlings struggled/died when I was starting the orchid hobby.
Now that I have a small collection with some successes, I think its time to jump back into the seedling journey/challenge!
Thanks for your opinions on another great orchid subject!

thank you so much, for watching and your nice comment!
i agree, having a small amount of them to baby is very rewarding when they're not the center of the collection.

      There ya go!
I’ve heard a couple people actually say they will buy a flask of something simply to try all types of growing styles and ideas with and only the best setups and trials have success, plus only the strong survive!
Pretty medieval and kind of brutal way of doing things.. but ya gotta admit for scientific purposes and learning new things… they’ve got a point >.

Thanks for the video and topic! My orchid journey started about 5 years ago. Little did I know how expensive these plants were, so, yes, I purchased mainly seedlings--of all kinds! Aside from being easy on the wallet, I learned so much about orchid care with seedlings. When I failed in caring for them (I have difficulty with miltoniopsis due to my climate), I didn't feel *as* bad. On the other hand, I'm still waiting for first blooms on some of them. And while this happened only once, I didn't know that one of my seedlings had been mislabeled until it finally bloomed. Now that I have more experience under my wing, I generally purchase mature or near blooming plants, but am also more discerning on what I purchase.

Needless to say it’s very educational to grow your plants from youngins and it gives you a lot of experience in simply learning to read your plant. Even if it doesn’t go well.. at least as a beginner, it’s better to lose some cheapies than some huge plants. And sosososii rewarding if you do manage to hold onto some.!!

I think almost everyone has difficulty with Miltoniopsis... the same has happened to us with the mislabeling! and we've had all of the responses from sellers, from refunds, to telling us the correct id, to just plain ignoring us! but it's true, seedlings are a very good learning experience, when you manage to pull them through!

    Great video!
I do think that as you said, going just seedlings cause they’re cheaper does get a bit tedious and fragile too if you’re not too equipped and a little hard on yourself. Or just if you don’t know your environment all that well, like in my case… I just recently moved into my parents garage and my conditions are drastically different and pretty much just outside conditions with some supplemental cooling atm in summer. (Doesn’t do much, lol)
In buying seedlings cause I’m mostly just cheap.. I really did benefit from having my few adult plants to keep me positive and going down that rabbit hole of the orchid world. And the good thing about buying from different places is that sometimes you do get a more mature plant and then when it flowers, you’re so pleased and reassured things are okay. Plus seedling crosses not yet registered do offer a huge payoff when you see a bloom that you don’t even know what it will look like! For instance.
I ordered this seedling only to have it arrive with a first flower and then actually continue to grow that spike fully and such a gorgeous little plant! It’s a stobartiana x venus
But of course it is always nice to have those more mature plants as a bonus because we do need to have different orchids growing at different times and blooming, I think just to keep things going well in confidence.
I always say do a little of both. And mystery bundles from reputable sellers, especially ones who have many reviews of sending healthy older plants… is such a mixed and wonderful way to develop your plants from different stages of development. :)
P.S. sorry for the novel book sized comment but i like your channel!
And I would love to see a pots review and source video as I am always struggling to find good reliable purchases… they are often not what you suspect and it would be great to actually see what they are like and have a quick go to order you can always put in when things are time sensitive or precarious.

I wish I knew of more cache pots to get in size reference to the inner pot and having some breathing room. The sizes are so misleading and confusing… and im a general contractor.. I should know measurements. Haha

uf, don't get me started on moving... now that we got things pretty settled here, we might be going to a new area, with a completely different climate (colder, more humid, with hard water)... it's going to be a new learning curve, just like you.
that's a good point, especially phals, we have some lovely ones that arent even registered and we got as those experimental seedlings nurseries carry. Mystery bundles sound lovely, i've been tempted a few times, maybe next time i order!
i've given up with the cachepots, i just have a pile of them i buy whenever i find them decently priced, and at some point it will fit some pot... not the best system, i know...

@@PetalsSepalsandSpines I’m literally laughing at your system because that’s exactly my logic. I just keep piling them up and thinking eventually I’ll have a bunch that work!… I have so many different pots and still I think I have two or three that fit the way I would like with that little bit of breathing gap around the outside of the pot.
-_- alas, this is why if someone had the motivation to do this work for us! Like a pot hunter who matches inner and outer cache pots from different sources and then tells us about them. Maybe even in all sizes and materials! And affordable! What a dream right??
Best wishes on your move! It really is not a fun thing in my opinion. I don’t know how people enjoy the process. Of course it’s lovely to settle into a new space. But then again I’ve always had to do it haphazardly and all of a sudden and rarely get to organize or pack correctly. And for some reason it’s always hot as heck. Haha anyway, I sympathize because it really is so much harder when you have special plant babies to consider. And fur babies make it rough too.
Thanks for the reply! These are monster sized comments and I wouldn’t blame ya if ya didn’t. *o_~
