Thanks Lee! Your aunt should water her monstera less🤣
For about the past 2 years now, your vids have popped up in my recommended list. Every time I'd see your thumbnails, I'd think "Wow these plant guys are nuts. How could anyone be so crazy obsessed about pla..." *It's me. I'm that guy now.* 😳
lol love it
video less than 3 minutes and full of info! This man is amazing!
Perfect timing Lee! Went to a local nursery and and saw a tray of rare plants in little solo cups packaged nicely. Rifled thru a few and though I saw a variegated pothos. Lo and behold it was a thai constellation for 25$!! Wife and I got one. They have 3 healthy leaves, just gotta keep it alive by all means
That's great, glad the prices came down.
Getting connected with this channel is the best thing I did as a new plant parent with busy schedule instead of wasting time on net
great video, as per usual. I was lucky enough to get here 13minutes after posting. You honestly have one of the best plant-channels i know.
Thanks!🌱🌱
If you have been overwatering and you don't want to repot, you can point a fan toward the plant. The airflow dramatically increases transpiration.
«You try telling her that in the comments. I’m not getting involved»😂
I put mine outside for summer, she's so happy
Mine love direct morning east sun until about noon, and they are thriving. I’ve gotten tons of fenestrations. All of this thanks to your channel! Started about a year ago, and I’ve had great results!
glad your plant is doing well!
This what I needed!!! I’m repotting today. I have my monstera in my basement, that’s where my space is, and got very low light. So I bought a 4ft grow light, and she has been loving it!!
I wish I could post a pic of my monstera. I have all 3 of mine outside under a tree. My largest leaf is 38” x 32”! She is absolutely stunning and constantly putting off new leaves.
youre my new favourite plant channel!
In early March, I put two of my Monsteras (owned for 3 years) outside on my balcony...to die. In April, I switched fertilizers. These little buggers have not died, they are thriving! They were under Soltech grow lights inside my apartment, I think their growth has to do with the fertilizer, light (east facing that's gone by noon), plus the sun/heat are helping me not over-water (I live in Los Angeles). I've learned so much from you, thank you!
love your videos! everything about them. I have few young monsteras and I am swallowing all your content. please keep up and have a nice life! ❤
I put most of my Monsteras outside Inc Albos and Constellations and NOW they’re living their best light.
Your Aunt and my mom, with the over watering. I'm no longer getting involved either. 😆 Thanks for the vid!
They are like the avengers of wet soil. 😂
Thank you for the reminder that plants in low light take less water out of the soil...I was wondering why a recently repotted pothos' soil was still wet over 2 weeks later, even with good draining soil and it looks healthy...I've now moved it to more sunny spot.
I have a southern window. I saw your video about monsteras being multiple plants and it has me totally rethinking my monstera that I just purchased ❤
Great video, I'll take it as inspiration for my next one! 🌱
I use to over water my plants, but I learned not to after watching your videos about how to care for my monstera plant, my son got me, which I don't want to kill, and my plant is doing so well
Glad to hear its doing well!
Cool tips about monstera plant
Woke up to my latest Monstera leaf unfurling, and my first inner fenestrations!!!! (frustrations as I prefer to call them) - resulting from changes I made based on your videos. I'd had my plant for 5 years and it was growing super slow and the leaves were not sizing up at all. In one year it has made amazing strides, thank you!!!!!
Amazing!
thanks for sharing
0:58 Omg😂
So much. But I definitely been there too
Thanks Lee this is the vital info I needed probably many others. Love the videos and as per on point , nice one!
Glad you enjoyed it
What’s your opinion on moister meters?
If you have a very chunky soil mix, they are less reliable.
Chunky soil mix, means more air gaps and less contact with the pins.
Since they work by detecting electrical current, less contacts means less current, less current reads more dry. So it will, by default, read more dry than it actually is.
Wow very good to know
I have 5 basic monsteras directly in front of a large 5x5 foot south facing window. All from small to extra large. I water all of them between 3-4 weeks at a time. All are doing extremely well.
Thanks, Lee! Such a great informative video as always!
Glad it was helpful!
Holy Moses! The plants on the shelf behind you quadrupled! They're beautiful. If my monstera gets any bigger itll need to be added to the lease and pay rent.
I had to move my Monstera away from our east facing window because she was getting sun stressed (close to the Arctic circle), and I was SO worried! But the newest leaf just puffed up fully and is 70cm long. I bought the cutting late last year with two leaves that were 30 and 40cm.
I'm so glad she's happy! I put her in an Elho self watering pot with indoor potting soil/perlite/orchid bark and give her a splash of fertilizer on each 3L watering now that we have sun.
Thanks for the tip!
No problem!
I have a sister in law like that! Sunday is her watering day. Every time I go over, her plants were soaking wet. She said she felt bad not giving them a drink every week! 😮 I even took one out and let her smell the rotten roots. Yup, it died.
😬
3rd favourite nephew 😂.
Brill video as always thanks Lee. 😊
Hi, can you use leca as a perlite substitute and mix it with regular potting soil? Thanks.
Chronic overwaterer here🙋♀️ thats why my monstera lives in a terracotta planter
great choice.
Get a moisture meter everyone!
I use terra cotta almost exclusively.
I desperately need to repot as the pot it is in in bursting but I have a big issue. My Monstera used to belong to my Dad and it's almost Twice as Big as I am. It got lots of Aerial roots and I'd assume I massive root ball. I don't know how I can get it out of there safely and into a new pot within the rather confined space of my balcony.
Bonjour.
J'aimerai bien savoir. Merci ;)
Hey I love the vids!! I got a question. Can any moss be used for moss poles. Since im experimenting and making moss poles myself and there is no sphagnum moss to buy here, can I use my native/wild moss from the forest. Also I found what appears to be Rhytidium rugosum moss which looks similar to sphagnum when dried. I guess there's a difference in moisture keeping capacity and risk of disease?
You're taking a risk. I don't know enough about other moss species. But water retention would be a main concern. Tree fern fiber is an expensive but useful alternative.
Hi Lee! If I caught the soil mix correctly -- you lined the bottom with orchid bark and also mixed it into the perlite and potting soil, correct? I'm assuming lining the bottom with orchid bark helps drainage (I've seen people do this with leca as well)? Love the videos!
no, I mixed it all in together after. I have a playlist on soil you should watch my "best potting mix" video
So.... I have a question. I live in growing zone 8, almost to zone 9 and right on the coast, so tons of humidity. Everything I have can sit outside and get HUGE and GORGEOUS. I would love to have a monstera large form, but I don't want it to get gigantic, as I move my plants out to my porch each spring. Seeing these amazing specimens get way too big to be moved, what would you suggest to keep it on the small to medium side?
Probably don't get a large form. You could keep cutting it back every time it gets too big but then you have to deal with it reverting leaf size every time.
Not bad advice I suppose
Love your videos! My monstera’s close to a northern facing window, but might not get enough light. How do I transition her to be outdoors for morning light (and crazy hot summer temps)?
Get a light meter. If you actually can compare where your plant is to where it will be you’ll see huge spike of light intensity and know to avoid that.
400fc should be your baseline. 2000-3000fc on the high end. Monitor closely. Slowly build capacity.
@@KillThisPlant Thanks! Is there a light meter you recommend? I see some that are pricey, and some that look cheap.
@@paulasoliscoaching cheap, and in the $20-35 range is just fine.
Im in a group on Facebook where people struggle with their Monstera and it is mostly because everyone tells them "indirect light" 😅
I try to tell everyone I can to put them in the full sun, south or west it's perfect 😅
I got some comments from people who doesn't agree at all 😅🤷🏻♀️
If they're weren't mostly French Canadians I would show them your videos all the time haha
Tell them I said ‘bonjour’, I guess
@@KillThisPlant hihi! Sure!
Great video like always !
I had my monstera in water for 2 years (to avoid fungus gnats..) and now i want to repot it in soil. Can i have some advices to do it without killing it ? Thanks !
That’s a tough one. It really depends on its size and how much roots you have. I would have to see it. Consider joining our discord. Link is through my profile.
@@KillThisPlant Posted, thanks in advance, i know its a tough one !
New plant parent here. While I was sticking to my small pothos and ivy, my husband bought home a large monstera. Talk about pressure! lol. Some of the leaves are damaged but new leaves are emerging from the stem (yay!). Do I leave the damaged leaves alone? They are unsightly but I don’t want to mess up opportunities for new leaves. Please help 🙏🏾🤣🌿💚
If you remove leaves your plant will grow slower.
any advice on thai constellations/ variegated monsteras in particular? just because they tend to be slower growers
They do require more light than their all green counterparts for the same amount of growth. Other than that, its the same general care.
@@KillThisPlant thanks!!
My monstera is facing South window, which has the most light in my country. It is growing really fast and she is happy there. But... its on the stairs so I almost don't have space to go upstairs anymore 😂 she get too big. I would like to take her to the other room and get her growlight. Is it possible to get growlight with enough light to big monstera? I want more huge leaves! ❤ pls I need some advise, I love your monsteras ❤
Yes, you may need more coverage (multiple lights) if the plant is really large. I always recommend Soltech Growlights due to their excellent colour temperature in a home.
Discount code is in the description.
If that is not an option you can consider joining our discord server, we have a section where we discuss growlights that may suit your needs. Link is through my about me section.
Thanks, Lee! I recently purchased a Monstera and it's beautiful! Do you think it is necessary to rotate it?!
no! here's why: ruclips.net/video/cxv9D9eXJ9Y/видео.htmlsi=iAdsMo-WpqO5vT6T
Thanks-I appreciate your help! I actually told someone that it shouldn’t be rotated and we ended up getting into a big disagreement over it.
Mine is curling down on itself and seems so sad 😢
Hi do u have videos on snake plants?..can we have a snake plant in a pot without holes and water them after few days when soil (coco peat)is dry...
yes, you can have snake plants without drainage, but I would really recommend glass or see-through containers so you can monitor moisture levels.
It will take longer than just a few days for them to get dry. Give them at least 2 weeks before you check.
@@melissaupton9104 thanks my dear
How many days to see if the soil is dry
I cant really tell you. it is highly depended on your plants size, light, temperatures, humidity, plants age, root mass, pot type, fertilizer...etc.
I need to know how to keep my monstera from getting any bigger without killing it or cutting it up and making more ;)
I had to make a top cut because she was getting out of control. The new cutting has 2 big leaves and lots of roots to grow. I owe this to the man behind these videos. His knowledge is very appreciated and his easy way of teaching is great. Thank you Lee 🌿
I’m dumping what’s in my yard into my monstera soilmix, compost, sand, rubble, charcoil from the fireplace… seems to like
I end up not watering any of my aroid plants until they look just the tiniest bit wilty. I feel like watering them gets them excited enough to do a growth spurt. At least, that's what I tell my neglectful self. (Sorry plants!)
If it works for you keep it up
I hope to have a relationship with my niblings when they’re adults where they call me out on my shit ❤. You can do it auntie, less water!!
Third favourite nephew... FORGET IT! 😅
😭
My monstera has decided to stop growing. Maybe its because Im in Ireland, where sunshine is in short supply, and unless I take it to Spain on holiday, I think its days are numbered ⚰️
hopefully as you get deeper into summer it'll put out some more leaves!
Get her a moisture meter off of Amazon.
With chunky soil mixes they don’t actually work. They always read more dry because they need contact with soil to detect electrical current. Chunky soil=air pockets=less contact.
The meter reads dry.
The only problem with your potting mix is that the bark will attract fungus gnats. Better to use coir 😊
Where did you hear that and explain the logic?
@@KillThisPlant I didn’t hear it, I was told it, and it works. No bark = no fungus gnats. The gnats feed on the bark. I’m a horticulturalist and work in a nursery and it’s the advice I give my customers 😊
@@sharonhoffer3599 But fungus gnats eat organic matter and fungi.
If you have any peat based potting soil, you'll have that in your soil. I'm not sure why you think orchid bark would be their only food source. Still a bit confused.
@@KillThisPlant I never said anything about orchid bark. Just the wood chips, as we call them in Australia, in any potting mix blend. We actually sell an indoor mix that is bark free where I work, Osmocote make it, which is less prone to fungus gnats. All my indoor plants are bark free and I never have any issues with fungus gnats unless I introduce bark, like I did recently with a small orchid I bought, and straight away I get fungus gnats.
@@sharonhoffer3599 so you're saying a higher quality potting soil with no wood chips is less prone to fungus gnats.
Once you introduce fungus gnats into an environment are you saying they will or will not feed on other soils regardless of the amount of bark?
Sorry Aunti I hope I’m still your favorite 3rd nephew;( Took me all the way out) 😭😭😭
Just moved my monstera from my apartment and in the move the leaf hit my windshield and now it's all burnt 😭
🥺
Less is better, auntie. Plants recover from too little water. With too much, they rot and die.
I did an impulse buy of a Monstera plant at Trader’s Joe🇺🇸
Don’t hate me.
Hope it grows big and tall!
@@KillThisPlant Thank you 🙏🏿
Gift her a smaller watering can so she waters them less whenever she waters?
Maybe a solo cup might work 😁
😂😂😂😂
Please propagate something else apart from Monstera
