I’ll tell you why things dont get released by police in regards to a missing person or homicide. There is something called “holdback evidence” which is evidence that no one knows besides the file investigators. It is kept from everyone in the event that it gets corroborated by another source without any prior knowledge of information. There is obviously something here that they do not want released with the hope that it may someday assist in the investigation. Holdback doesn’t get released over time if it’s not solved, it stays protected information pretty much forever or until it is solved...... there are answers that people may think need to be released but it doesn’t if it is considered holdback it stays that way even if it would make the family feel better or answer questions...... you need to protect the integrity of the file.
Just thought I would let anyone know why some things done get released even after years :)

    • @ellespoonies
      @ellespoonies 6 лет назад +10

I agree! I do wish we could find a good balance of holdback and releasing info in some cases, though. it sometimes feels like the public just needs certain details to jog their memory of what they may not realize they know, but often that detail can't be released because it's just too important. like in this case, knowing the model of the truck he had could jog the memories of the locals and they could remember where he had been or if they'd seen him, but it seems like that truck and the place they found it is a key piece to this mystery that they can't risk letting the public know.

    • @helenaj9436
      @helenaj9436 6 лет назад +7

While that's true in ALL investigations, the fact thos wasn't immediately an FBI issue, that seems odd.
Then, this wasn't nationwide. Why? It obviously encompasses multiple states and various police jurisdictions. Even this being mentioned in Franklin, TN and all points up I81/I 77/I85/I 40/I95....it would've been seen as a pattern and picked up nationally. Or, why wasn't it released and requested to be a nationwide story?
That seems like a missed opportunity. 😢

GirlNamedSandoz this assumes police solve crimes lol usually they are a hindering the investigation if not flat out accusing the wrong person. If the public doesn’t solve it for them at least 90% of murder’s wouldn’t get solved AT ALL. Have you watched any of these true crime videos? It’s ridiculous how unhelpful unprofessional unproductive police are. Even in this case the family asked the police to search where the truck was and they didn’t for FIVE years. Lol police and their hold back evidence are really just holding back doing work.

My gut says that Robert was running drugs and Nieko went with him. And I think that maybe they got into some kind of argument (maybe it was because of Nieko attending the phone when his grandma called, and Robert snapped. It was the last time his phone pinged, after all) and Nieko ended up dead. Robert, guilt ridden, had a nervous breakdown in the police station and later overdosed.

It is possible he was taking a drug shipment to Tennessee. Possibly he gave some to his friend then got in trouble when drugs were missing from the shipment. It's so dangerous that even if drugs weren't missing there could have been trouble at the time of delivery. I have heard that even people that don't use drugs can be enticed financially to deliver a shipment.

    • @princessbuttercup2087

Terri Dean this is what I thought too. Maybe Robert came to him with an offer to make a bit of money maybe to help their legal troubles. Maybe he got into some trouble and he answered the call from his grandmother just because he wanted to hear a voice he knew and loved as he knew this crazy stupid idea had gone tits up. We all do stupid crazy wild things between 16-20. I also wonder if this rape charge has anything to do with it. Was this underage girl his girlfriend or a hook up and he didn't realise her age or her parents found out she was sleeping with him and so she didn't get in trouble did she say it was rape. Or was it actually rape did Niko and his friends hurt this young girl and force her to perform sexual acts. It's all very messy thanks Danielle I love your videos you do so much research and you can tell how much you genuinely care with the respect you show to both the family and the victim, living and the dead 😙

Anita katzina0152 Kissmyass the I.D though....I think the I.D is an extremely important "clue". I said on another comment on here that I originally thought this kid is still alive and and wanted to disappear. After learning more though I'm skeptical of that now. My 2 theories were this:
      1. He intentionally dropped the I.D in the street where it was extremely visible and easy for someone to find bcuz he wanted it to look suspicious and planned to disappear due to his legal troubles.
      2. Or he accidentally dropped the I.D when he was stealing the truck...which would make him a very, very unlucky criminal and would make him look so foolish. Maybe he intended to steal the truck to just go out of town camping with the friend, or to get the friend back to Michigan and first went to his uncles house (which was weird to begin with)...but he went there so that he would have an alibi to say he was with his friend in his grandfather's truck and hadn't been near where the truck was stolen.. (Or he went to the uncles house to have an alibi for something else or to throw people off for another reason entirely) .. However when he realized he dropped his I.D where the truck was stolen he panicked, assumed with his other legal troubles as well that his life was over and he was going to prison so he decided at that point he had to disappear.
If the 2nd theory is correct that could explain why he did actually answer the phone to the grandmother. Maybe he had just realized he had dropped his I.D when she called or right before she called and that's why he "couldn't talk right now" because he was freaking out trying to think of what to do at that point...

    • @alyssamathews7492
      @alyssamathews7492 6 лет назад +3

He was alive down in Franklin though...so maybe he went down there bcuz he either knew someone who would buy that truck without a title and knowing it was stolen (maybe he knew someone with the same or similar make and model who needed parts) or maybe he knew someone who could connect him with a person to "chop" the truck so he could get enough money to get to a different destination further away....and he either 1. Did get the money he needed and did get away to somewhere else and he is alive and okay...or 2. He met with some unsavory characters trying to get rid of the truck and he met with foul play at that point.

I was thinking that, but there were a few other young men involved in the case too, right? Why single out Nieko out of all of them? The only reason I see, could be if he was the one the girl feared most/was most violent out of the group... But if he was going to go to the police with further info like Danelle said, that probably meant he was, at the very least, not the ringleader/guiltiest party. Unless he was planning on making up a lie to sell out the others.

I honestly feel like he ran somewhere or maybe even got across the boarder. Seeing that he had rape charges against him maybe he was afraid of going to jail or having this ruin his life, so he ran away. For him to call all those numbers as if maybe he was trying to get help and the way his friends acted really strange I believe they helped him run away and Nico told them not to tell his family. This case is sad

    • @nataliegomez91

Lost this is what I was thinking too. The rape charges would most definitely be a cause for him to choose to disappear on his own. What border? I think we all know that going to Mexico wouldn't be viable, Its actually quite difficult to live in any place undocumented. I think hoping that he ran away is the nicer thing to believe. But I also think because we already assume he was rapist it affects our view of this person. Instead of seeing a young man we see a criminal who like most criminals is a coward and can't confront his issues. It is an easy answer to convoluted question.

So I’m actually close friends with this girl who was a family friend and was there at the time the alleged “rape” happened. My friend was in the car that dropped him off at his friends house to pick up a borrowed item. He was there for less than two minutes, in and out of the house, and the girl that accused him only did so because he was one of the faces she remembered there. He was innocent but it’s unknown whether or not he ran because of the charges. Its sad that this case has so little clues to what happened to him and because of that the truth kinda gets muddled or little things like that are overlooked by the general population because it’s not easily found info.

I think how ever deleted it might of had a conversation with him that would of said a lot of what happen. Also I think the cops should say where that house is because someone could come and tell who sold a part of the truck to them. They could say what they saw or heard. This sounds really personal.

The problem is, we don't even know, what type of episode Robert has suffered during (t)his police interrogation.
      Theoretically this could've been:
      1) Epilepsy/epileptic episode, or
      2) withdrawal symptoms, or
      3) the opposite, Robert could've been swallowing a bit too many prescription medications to stay calm during his interrogation, but it turned out to be too much, or
      4) Robert freaking out to be questioned like an offender, or
      5) many other reasons I didn't even think of yet.
Like e.g. intentional police brutality, which usually is on a spectrum...
Ranging from lying to him (= emotional pressure) to hurting him and every interrogation strategy trick in-between.
Unfortunately all informations we've gotten so far are so extremely vague. - That way it's really hard to come up with theories, which could make any sense...
This stood out to me for the most:
Every information given to us by LE is so vague and unclear, it raises way more questions than any possible answers...
I've just been watching the video again; third time all in all.
& I feel/think chances are higher, LE did send Robert to a hospital or a mental health facility; rather than to any kind of rehab.
Similar to you, I've thought the upbringing in a rehab facility would need a court decision or warrant.
& Of course meaning a place in a rehab facility where he could stay at; to me it's highly doubtful though, rehab facilities are having so many empty places waiting for a random patient.
& Even that also is only a guess, we just don't have enough informations, what's really been going on in Robert's life till his death.
LE doesn't even give clarification about his death, what's a "supposed/probable overdose"?
Robert's death happened in his home, he shared together with his father/parents, which leads me to the conclusion, he's highly likely been found early enough for a medical examiner to determine a correct cause oaf death.
(Nobody stated, he'd have been too decomposed and that would've been the reason to call it a "supposed/probable od").
This left me with the suspicion, LE itself is heavily confusing the public here...
(At least I feel confused by their statements).
      ------------------------
      PS.
The only reason, why I'd suggested he could've died from withdrawals, is bc it occasionally happens in my home country.
"Drug rehab" often happens in mental health facilities here in Germany and Austria (both Europe).
Patients having all sorts of medical conditions are being brought there very often against their will. - Addicts and non addicted persons experiencing a bad trip. - & Of course they're all freaking out badly.
So upon arrival in the facility, they're given high amounts of benzos and neuroleptics to calm them down; often for prolonged periods of times.
When it comes to the end of their treatment/upbringing and they're getting released soon, they're already addicted to these drugs (no matter if they've usually been using/abusing them outside or not).
The facilities staff isn't really prepared to deal with these additional problems. - They've tried, but mixing heavily sedated patients with withdrawing patients in relatively small facilities didn't work well. - So they hurry to release these patients (by using some law loopholes) to let them deal with their withdrawals outside of the facilities.
I've just been watching former staff members stating, they've been quitting their jobs in the mental health field bc of these exact troubles. (Unfortunately these reports were all in my native German language).

Hearing about the pending rape charges immediately made everything make more sense. It makes it seem way more like he knew if he was tried he'd be found guilty so he ran. Maybe he's in Mexico now or the like. The weird behavior, moving around to throw off his trail, getting rid of his ID, selling the car (possibly to someone in on it?)... Sounds like a guilty man running.

I firmly believe that this guy stole the truck, and took off in a drug-fueled haze. The fact that he roamed all over several states practically non-stop combined with the unusual behavior supports this. It would be difficult enough for an adult to disappear & start a new life w/o being found, let alone an unsophisticated 18 year old. This is shady all over. Maybe he od'd or was high & started a fight with someone. He was definitely harmed, his friend (I believe) killed himself, and there are people with info. most definitely. Hell, they hid the damned truck! The cops are mum on the whole thing because they are building their case.

Saskia Wiseman Bailey If someone ever approaches you and tells you to go with them or get in their car, don’t. If you go with them, statistically, you’re not coming back. Fight right there. If they’re going to kill you, make them do it there. Try to kill them first if at all possible. Don’t leave with them, ever.

Taticat NineLand what if someone grabs you off the street? Easier said than done.

Muls 95 ...you get that she’s asking for tips, right? Do you have anything to contribute, or are you just here asking for one person to step up and solve all the world’s problems? So...do you have any tips?

Taticat NineLand I was replying to you. As I said, it's easier said than done to just run away

Taticat NineLand This is what my mom always told me to do. Complying hoping that they won’t hurt you if you go with them generally doesn’t work out.

Regarding the rape charge: he had "consensual" sex with a girl under the age of fourteen. Not sure how it can be consensual when the victim is a child. In any case, I hope the case is solved.

      a child cannot consent

That's like a freshman and a senior having sex. Idk...I'll leave that alone.

Believe it or not not everyone's brain and maturity level are the same. I was more mature and responsible at 12 than grown adults. It should be looked at on a case by case basis.

I don't know. This is a hard one. I don't buy into the run away theory. If he was running away, why would he run towards the END of his legal issues? I think the most likely theory is that it was a either an accident, and people are panicking. Thats why they deleted his facebook account and HID the truck for 5 YEARS! Or a friend of a friend situation like the David Gibson Smith case. I really hope they figure it out so the family has closure.
