Sam's having waaaay more fun in the $350 Hobie than 99.9% of the million dollar marina cats. 👍
true that!
I always think Sam has some good company when Zoe goes along. She seems to have Sam’s spirit of adventure.
nope
This guy will always be flying high one way or the other, rock the stars young man, take who will every come along with you. Smooth living& stay happy.
I'm amazed to see this video, since I also bought many cats for cheap. The last one, was a Hobie 18, I got for $400., with a nice trailer. I now have 8 cats, and was overwhelmed with fixing them up, and storing them. So last year, I started watching your videos, and thinking about getting just one boat, like your mono hull ! And to see you and your friend sail it, was inspirational. You made it look so simple. I learned a lot about that, and the attitude needed for sailing, in general. Also, last year, I tried to get a friend of mine, to go sailing in the Fla. Keys, for a week of sailing and camping, but he declined. So I'm very interested in watching your next videos. I live in Miami, and know how good the sailing is in the Keys. Thanks for the videos. And if anyone reading this needs a catamaran or windsurfer, in South Fla., let me know.
After reading "I now have 8 cats...", my first thought was " so he's a crazy cat lady... but not a lady". All of my envy, dear sir! I hope you're enjoying them and find a good mate in your region who'll join you on your trip to the keys.
@@mcouture8169 Thanks. Coincidentally, I just got a phone call from my sister. She married a guy, who sailed around the Caribbean, for two years, on his sailboat. I am hoping to sail soon, but my vehicle is broken down, and I can't get to the water. I'm having time to work on them, at least.
Who would deny a request like that
Love Hobbies. Sailed an 18 in San Francisco. Often 25 kts plus. Screaming accross the bay and even under the Golden Gate. What kick ass boats they are. And amazingly seaworthy. Wow, sail to Hawaii on a 23 foot sailboat, sail accross the Atlantic and up to Norway in a Cape Dory 28. Get your Sailplane Certification and do some acrobatics; and what next? Off course an adventure on a Hobby Cat! Love it.
Do not sail without wearing lifevests.. First sailing lesson.
I have been racing/sailing beach cats for a while now and this looks like a fun h16. Just to let you know, the trampoline is not on the boat correctly. the threading is meant to go up the center of the boat. this trampoline seems to have been put on at an angle. it will help with overall stiffness, speed, and make it easier to sit on if you remove it and redo it. Cant wait to see some Hobie cat camping. Lots of fun! Joseph Bennett has TONS of good videos on techniques for sailing these boats. I recommend checking out his videos on trapezing. It will make it a lot easier to get in and out of the boat in higher wind speeds if you use a better technique. Thanks for the video. Stay safe!
It looks like it a case of, the tramp is correctly on the way it was made to fit, you can't simply rotate a tramp 45degs and fit it. I'll personally replace it with a normal style one. But you can't exactly say it's fitted incorrectly and simply remove and refit it, as it simply wouldn't work that way
lol
Zoe is like a Tinkerbell
Just when our levels of respect couldn't get any higher, you went and bought a catamaran 😁
looool
No drilling holes so not a true Sam how to...
🙊🙉🙈🐵

Not sure the forces work out well without a full jib but spent little time (not none) on Hobie.
SailBoard / generic windsurf next upGrade?
I'm excited to see Hobie Cat camping! I got really into this a few years ago, but no one did a camping series that I could find. Glad to see you're going to do it Sam! Keep it up!
The Mer and the man started out with a cat like this down in Australia.... hes now got a Wharram..he lives on.
I cannot believe you sailed to the Bahamas in this piece lmao. You are crazy dude
Gosh... Raced a Hobie 16 for many years... Some tips for setting it up that will help day sailing (if you want to take the trouble): Get a real 16 jib. Shorten the sidestays to rake the mast back (this helps prevent pitchpoling, and help up wind performance as it's acknowledged original design has mast a bit too far forward.). Take the hulls off the tramp and shim the posts to eliminate a lot of slop. Install a "righting line" to easily right the boat after an inevitable flip (many schemes for this). If rudders buzz, sharpen the trialing edges and then square off the trailing edges with a file to about 1/16". You can easily exceed 20 knots on this boat, especially on a reach. Have a blast.
wow 20 knots ? jeez they can go fast!
@@therealpomme Back in the heyday of the Hobie 16, you could find photos of folks waterskiing behind a 16 on a windy reach. Light skier for sure, but have personally hit low 20-knots many times. It indeed is a wild ride, with amazing rooster tails. Rudders barely have enough "lift" to balance driving forces. And, it's a hairy job to keep the hull tips from going under which leads to pitchpoling at that speed. Got thrown cartwheeling at that speed when hulls went under. If I recall, the speed record for a 16 is somewhere around 25-27 knots, but 20+ is pretty easy to do with a boat set up somewhat stock. Sam's boat is setup crudely without the jib. etc. etc. so, he'll have challenges pointing up wind. That's ok, it's still a great casual day sailor. The really cool thing about cats is, on a reach, you can exceed the speed of the wind. You can hit 20 knots of boat speed in a 12 knot breeze.
I've only sailed a H16 once, just outside of Newcastle, not much wind but it was a very fun ride :)
Beach cats are awesome :)
Thanks for sharing. I'm currently contemplating getting back into sea kayaking here in Indonesia, to do some remote camping, but the Hobie concept is certainly interesting to contemplate. I used to own a cat similar to a mosquito which was so much fun. Anyway, please keep up your great vids. Cheers.
6 knots is a good start! lol, our current record is 18.5, aiming to get into the 20's this season
Sam & Mr. Beast could be brothers I swear…
So cool Sam freedom. 😎 Enjoy. Zoe seems like a really fun and exciting person to hang out with in your adventures. Can't wait to see the hobie cat sailing through the keys. Be well and stay safe. 🙏
Jib was upside down. Don't ask how i know.
Enjoying Zoe with you, she adds to your adventurous spirit.
Hey Zoe I have my glider pilot license, wanna go?
Zoe: cool how long you being doing that?
Sam: about an hour
Zoe: cool, let's go.
I can see it now Sam travels solo from Cali to Hawaii on a Hobe cat. lol
I hope you save enough money to buy a big motorized catamaran to sail around the world
I’ve been Hobie 16 sailing for 35 years and I still love it. I flying a hull is a blast. Once you get your proper jib, just remember when tacking, that you need to backwind the jib for a second before breaking the sheet. Have fun!!!
For the love of God, get a real jib.
Cool! But is it optimistic or pessimistic that there are floats at the top of the mast?
Overnight camping? Let's start a betting pool: What date will Zoe and Sam arrive in the Exumas on the Hobie?
that settles it, im buying one
Sam this is a great diversion from all the terrible news today!
this was a refreshing break from all the dark news in the world
Amen on that !!
I always set my Hobie 16 up on the beach to avoid dropping that crucial piece in the water. Everyone does that at least once. If you don’t drop the pin you drop the split ring. Definitely get the correct jib if you can. You will go faster and it will help a lot with tacking. Just beware of the pitch pole down wind.
Yes. But does everyone tie it off and go sailing anyway?
Lanyards .... thats what they are for and tools whilst up the mast .⚓
You don’t need to climb the mast on a Hobie cat. Just pull it over and put the boat on its side.
The part he dropped is a small 1/4” diameter pin. I think it would be tough to tie a lanyard on it.
@@markgallagher1376
I will look again..but i have bicycle trailers whose tubular Al frames are locked in place with 5-7mm pins that have spring C clips pivoted from the head and anchored to the frames with either SS wire or fine cords..
Cold wet hands are common to both interests.
my f riend lives in bonita springs a few times we took his 32 foot doug white race boat to the keys. going 130 mph down the gulf is insane, loud, bumpy and more fun than you can imagine. good luck with hobie
Why not buy the trailer too?
Sam - Get the correct jib and the performance really improves. From my years of experience, the Hobie 16 is the perfect sailboat for shallow coastal areas. The folks with experience call it the “Sweet 16.”
One more Sam - Hobie 16 has been sailed from Florida to the Bahamas (add that to your list).
It's all fun and games until the trap lines break and you become shark food 😂
Great video but is this an older video?
Fins to the left, fins to the right, don't tell Zoe bite bite bite
I taught myself to sail on a hobby 16 … so much fun! Now I live out of my 86 Hunter 25.5
$300 bucks VERY WELL spent. Love it.
I race Hobie 16& 20 in the Bay Area & loving it. Cya @the Hobie 16 North American Championships later this year?
Wow, it would be great to get something like that to escape a cold and wet Ireland during the winter. A cheap cruiser or indeed a hobbies like yours and do camping/raiding trips! Only thing is I’m scared shitless of the crocodiles and pythons that ye have there! SkipRay, Kerry.
This is Fort Myers, right? My grandfathers old house is directly across the canal where you set everything up. The house with the black truck in the driveway! Small world!
And somewhere in Sweden the Pickle rests in a yard covered in snow!.......wondering what is Sam up to?
The hull decks are delaminated, common Hobie problem. You need to get that fixed ASAP.
Sorry Sam. I have not tuned in for a while. What happened to the Cape Dory? Did you sell it? I thought you were in Europe. Where are you now?
That's either Hayley from Paramore or Zoe, looks like fun was had. These are gonna be fun episodes.
Just floating through life..... with no purpose or direction!!
You're entertaining and amazing...such fun and you have a great attitude
Where are you in Ft Myers’s? We are on Estero blvd near Santini mall when we are there. Close to public.
Great fucking video. Cool hobie! Fun stuff
Dude. Stop sailing the 16 without a jib. It ain’t cool at all and you can’t even heave to without a jib in heavy weather.
Awesome! Get out and sail!
Hey is that jib on the wrong way though? Looks like the longest edge is at the trailing edge when I think it works better with it as the leading edge. Makes the bottom edge kind of flat instead of downward sloping.
I love watching your videos and I have no clue what your talking about 😂
At 4:50, Sam said "It seems like we're going slow." To me, these peeps have 'pace'. ❤
Sam: Got this jib. Kinda small.
Also Sam: But it's perfect.
Oh man, I thought by the title that you were going to the dark side for your main cruiser
That thing looks fun and another level with the harnesses
Nice, man. I had a Hobie 16 as a teenager. Used to fly around Charleston harbor. It was nice hearing you on the Single-handed Sailing Podcast. Cool that you and Matt R. could finally link up.
had a hobies for few years till i got cought out in middle of lake michigan wind died and sat there for hours when back and sold hobie
Sam, don't you dare try to sail that puppy back to Europe!
Hi Sam,
Love your videos. We bought a beach cat two years ago to go sail-camping. I had a question on that though. Sometimes the closest camp-spot is a little ways away from where we can land the cat. So far so good, it was always still there the next morning. But wondering if you have any ideas on “locking” it to prevent theft.
I dont think I’d have to worry about someone steeling this boat but I suppose you could chain it to a tree. Or something. We usually camped nearby it
It's got both the rudders! (foreshadowing)
Man I envy you Sam!! I've been spending the last 4 days epoxying, painting and varnishing my little MIrror Dinghy in horrible cold weather here in the UK ready for our sailing season!! Only about another 4 days to go!!!
Where in the uk do you sail?
Well Sam and Zoe that was a good video that's a pretty cool boat
Fun video to watch. Zoe seems like a great person to hang out with. Safe travels.
It doesn't have a kitchen, toilet or bed. I fail to see the upgrade.
Sails a 300 dollar boat to Bahamas like taking a walk in the park.
🇺🇸🇺🇦⛵️
I love seeing you having so much fun and it was great to see Zoe ⛵️⛵️⛵️😊😊
you’ll need a proper genoa to get a pontoon flying, where your outriggers will be mandatory. as a fun-time guy, I recommend it. I have a Prindle 18 with ‘80s Pattison Sails from Laguna, CA. it’s fast af, fun and brings all the girls to the yard
CC - you have a cat and it has “pontoons”? 😳 They are hulls my friend.
You are the coolest guy in the best example of the efficient sailor and the efficient lifestyle good on you!
What's this an upgrade from?
you should show the food you eat would love to have seen the sushi. great video
Sweet rig and sail. Looking fwd to the camping videos. I filmed a journey on my old 14 Hobbie. Took it from Flamingo across to mile marker 69.5 and back. Camped on Rabbit Key in Florida Bay. Cool way to travel.....except when the wind dies. National Park Range stopped and asked if I was lost, as I floated aimlessly in Florida Bay waiting for more wind. Good luck out there.
Hey... awesome video... always wanted a Hobie cat.... started sailing at 10 on a Chrysler manowar n Texas... haven't sailed n 30 + yrs......been jetsking..powerboating last 20 yrs off n on.....think I'll get a Hobie this summer (LAKE TEXOMA)if this crazy world allows....b saved Romans 10:13
That looks like SO much FUN!
ive been bingeing your videos and i always thought you looked familiar then i realized you look like Mr. Beast
I get that alot
Can you sail across the Atlantic with this cat? Let's say from Dominican republic to Canary islands
hmmm
take a surf board and surf with the harness??
Nice! My Hobie 18 is super fast
I like seeing you back on the water, and I agree with everyone that you and Zoe are good together. I do miss your Cape Dory 28, almost as much as I miss mine, Lol. But we are happy moving forward like you are.
A female companion/shipmate who willingly "runs the ropes" and smiles after a night of battling Nosee'ums! Outstanding!
Zoe should have her own channel.
Waterborn Wombles....⛵😁🤣⚓
Ah yes! A Hobie 16. I'm 63 and still sail my 1984 16 in the summers up north. About time to set her up for the season...!
...real fast - like your first comment under wind. - I'm just a bit scared about your forestay solution. Think about the pull forces you get when going hard by the pull on the main. You need a jib... with the main alone it is just half the fun... because of the missing weight you have practically no momentum and tacking is quite a challenge. On a tack you keep the jib cleated until the wind grabs the main from the new side. The backwind in the jib helps you quickly turn the boat. I also see you do not use the main traveler... I assume you did not get all the parts, or some are broken. If you stop by in the bay area, we could have some real fun together. --- My first comment on a mon hull (23.5) was: quite slow... (in comparable wind). The H26 is a bit better because of the beefed up sails. I like to sail both mono and multi hull. Both have their beauty...
Classic Sam and Zoe mess-around!
Woohoo!
Looks like fun!
Glad your enjoying your down time!
Sucks to be in America right now.
But it'll get better
Fast boats are fun. I sail a 15ft outrigged canoe and camp aboard overnight. Check out my vids. Simple boating is a micro adventure every time. Great to see you and Zoe sailing together again.
$350!!! That is absolute steal!!
I grew up with a Hobie 16 with a 1.5 turbo jib (genoa). Raced in Marine Stadium (Long Beach) as a kid. Whenever I'm in serious trouble on a sailboat I always revert back to those experiences and my gladiator days in the Stadium. Your sailing will improve immensely. Basically you sheet her in and stand on the flying hull moving forward and aft (while in the bucket) as needed to avoid pitchpole. You need a tiller extension to be able to do it solo. I went from Hobies as a kid to J-boats as an adult and am a MORC East Coast Champion (PHRF-C).
I've watched you for years now and always think you would make a good glider pilot. You have the necessary mental calmness and some flight experience. Get your powered license (so you can tow) and then your glider license. You would make a fine glider pilot, I'm sure of it. Your friend Zoe is cute and sporty.
Thanks Sam! I always get so inspired by watching your videos. Best, Robert in Cold, Snowy, Icy Chicago
Oooo...love the Hobbie 16! They are fast! My guess is that mine is about the same vintage as yours...1974...and they are cheap fun. Soft in areas you pointed out but overall in good shape. Thanks for taking us along for your fun adventures! Dean
Dear mr intrepid, loved the video, and the hoby….my hobie jib was much bigger, and really helped going about. Bet ya used the paddles to go about. They only point 45 deg, but loads a fun!,
I have a Hobie 16 which I sail on the Gold Coast Australia. Definitely a fantastic investment!! Happy sailing!
Love this video I’m inspired
Yes... How can one just not love Zoe! A dream girl right there... 😜And going cat, is downgrading btw. 😎😅
$300 Bucks ain't a bad deal
Awe man! I had a 18 ft sunfish cat back in the day. Many summers spent flying up and down the ICW/ indian river in Florida leaned out on the bench. As long as you can get back upright, you'll be good to go!
Where are you at in this video?
You are amazing and interesting Sam - thanks for all your adventures. We are sitting on anchor at Staniel Cay Bahamas working our way to FL and up to Canada. Love getting wifi and catching up with you. Cheers mate
Back in a previous life I built Hobbies in Australia, the tramp looks like it's made up of two damaged ones. Sam check how well the mast is sealed. It should be watertight, so if you go upside down the mast doesn't fill with water and act like a keel. They are heaps of fun to sail and especially flying a hull. Enjoy mate.
Where is the Honda Element?
