  • Helpful Links Below! Thank you for watching! Mixing Dubbing is SO fun and it saves us money! My only suggestion after now mixing a lot is to mix the dub grinder in "short bursts" holding the button to long can start a friction fire. Just a word of caution "don't ask how I know"🫣

    I suggest you make written notes of quantities of materials used; at the beginning, and through the adjustment process until you get what makes you happy and you have a recipe for it , and save it. That way, two or three years, later when you are running low, you can reproduce this shade exactly from your notes! P. S. - make note of procedures, or changes, I.e. I used acrylic wool, colour # XX , 1bpiece, 6 " long, cut into 1/2" pieces, .

      Thank you I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I sincerely appreciate comments like this. It's fun making dubbing and the possibilities of colors are endless! Just be careful when you mix with the coffee grinder not to run it too long. It's best to do short 5 second bursts and pauses until it's mixed. I say this because some materials build up a lot of friction and can catch fire. It's rare but I just wanted to share that with you. Thanks so much for watching and talk soon!

    Buy a few Hare's Ear Masks. Shave the different areas aka the base of the ears with a ton of guard hairs and then other areas with less guard hairs and put into seperate bags.
    Than make different textures by mixing the buggy with the less buggy. Then just drop in different color fibers to change the colors.

    That grinder works best in short bursts. I mostly use dubbing with real fur added now. I bought a cheap rechargeable beard trimmer to trim fur off the hides,faces,feet,whatever you have. And I can set it to cut the part I want. Like the top half of the hair. Then brush out the underfur and use that too. Or cdc trimmings, or marabou scrap.

    I love this idea because I am always spending a lot on dubbing material for flies Pluto with the way you did the holder is fantastic. But I have a question why drill the bottom instead of the top of the box?

    • @blackflycreations
      @blackflycreations  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you Robert! Sincerely appreciate the kind words, I'm always looking for ways to save a few bucks. I drilled the bottom so I could always have a little dub sticking out and still be able to flip the box, open the lid, and add more colors without pulling the dubbing out, or having to push it back in. Just personal preference, believe me I'm not that smart! Haha
      Thank you for watching and Merry Christmas my friend!

  • @robertmiller9142
    @robertmiller9142 5 месяцев назад

    I like the box the way that you did it and am wondering if the reason that you drilled the bottom instead of the top is so that you can label it easier also why not cut from the tinsel boa that you have to make the flash in the orange spice color I would add it in before the wool and to make it lighter add some of white a little at a time until you get what you want.

    • @blackflycreations
      @blackflycreations  5 месяцев назад

      That's a great question Robert! The main reason I drilled the bottom is so I can push the dub through the hole. However I love your idea of labeling the color's! I'm trying to keep a record of materials so I can duplicate them but each needs a name. I like you're suggestion for the orange mix as well. I'm making some dry fly mixes coming up.

      Hey Jerry! I completely understand the materials can be expensive, so I'm always looking for ways to save. However, what I've learned is if you buy "lets say a pack of hackle" you can tie a bunch of flies from one small saddle. But, I think you have to truly enjoy the hobby, catching fish on a bug you created for me is soooo rewarding especially when it's something new the fish haven't seen 500 of that month. Whatever you decide I wish you the best and appreciate you watching.

      Hey Gary! Sorry took so long to respond I had to work late. I bought the wool at Hobby Lobby and I just asked for "Merino wool".. They had 3 colors, Olive, Black and the Natural tan. All 3 are awesome but I think it's just a standard wool and not merino. Anyways hope this helps and thank you for watching! Take care,

    Do you think a regular blender would give same results? It’s a blender I don’t use so I have no worries about it breaking

    • @blackflycreations
      @blackflycreations  Месяц назад

      Thats a great question! I think the blender "depending on the blades" could possibly mix some materials that are super light like feather clippings & soft rabbit fur, but I can't recommend it.
      The biggest difference between the coffee grinder and a blender is the coffee grinder rotates at a very fast rpm and has sharp blades, where as the blender is much slower with dull blades.
      Sorry I can't give a better answer but who knows maybe it would work! Be careful if you try it, I'd wear eye protection and be prepared for fire! Haha.. "Funny but serious"
      I learned that even the coffee grinder if ran too long can catch on fire "short 5 second bursts" is much safer.
      Hope this helps and let me know how it goes!
      Steve

    Love this video ! Where can I get the FLY decal you have on the back wall ? I have been finding that the Polyester yarn is kind of expensive around here in New Jersey.

      Thank you! I just restocked the "Fly" decals, I just need to update the website so they will be back up this week at www.Blackflycreations.com ... And yes, I dont know why but the Polyester is more expensive right now here in Utah as well. I found a small batch on sale but hopefully it gets cheaper again. Thanks again for watching and have a great week!

      @@gldead3741 I'm sorry, I've been so busy trying to restock for 4th qtr that I haven't finished the stickers yet. I have a box in my office I need to photograph and list on my site. I've also fell behind on creating video's. However I'll do my best to get them up this week. As for the video's, I'm trying to make a month's worth so I can stay ahead and stay consistent. But thank you so much for even considering my little shop. Have a great day my friend.

    I bought yarn. 100% acrylic Red Heart
    Chopped it in to 1/2" or so pieces.
    Put in to my old coffee grinder.
    Pulsed...pulsed...pulsed...
    It did NOT "FLUFF" It did, kind of ...but it also tied hundreds of tiny little knots in to every color. SO Frustrating!!
    Any thoughts?!

    • @blackflycreations
      @blackflycreations  2 дня назад

      Man what a bummer, I'm sorry. My only thought is maybe the older coffee grinder blades are not sharp, and it's possible it has a lower rpm motor. I made sure to buy the highest speed grinder with stainless blades that I could find. I've also read that you shouldn't grind coffee beans if your planning to use it for dubbing, and that a 2 blade not 3 blade works best. It was in an article in fly tyer magazine, Ill try to find a link for you so you can check it out.
      My buddy has an older grinder that doesn't work nearly as well as mine but it still works, he just has to cut the material's into 1/4 inch pieces instead of 1/2 inch.
      Anyways, sorry for the novel, I've had a blast inventing new dubbing.
      I hope this helps! Let me know what you discover so I can share with others.

      @@blackflycreations Thanks man. Yeah, maybe I'll go buy a new one. I didn't think of the need for it to cut it apart, rather thought we were just breaking the fibers apart and "fluffing" it up. It is a lightly used older one I got years ago, but yeah. Maybe start with a new one and try that.
      My next thought on this little adventure is how to make homemade "thin skin". That has got to be some silicone from model train supply or something poured out on a sheet try and maybe dyed a little. haha

      Hey Michael great question! The holes are so I can keep the box upside down and only pull small amounts of dubbing out while tying. I tried to recreate the name brand dubbing boxes that are kinda pricey. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!

    I was doing a little bit of dub spinning and I found that some synthetic materials do not want to break down and stubbornly stay in stringy type dub that doesn't work well. I was using a new mill grinder. So my recommendation would be to examine quite closely what makes the starting material. I now have a small tub full of different shades of wool yarn

      I have learned that using two dog brushes which has hundreds of wires on a flat wide brushes. I put the material inbetween the brushes and break them down.
      I wouldn't do 1/4" cuts it dubs poorly and falls off your flies super fast while fished. Also I avoid natural fibers they rot really quick.
