I am in middle school and someday I want to brcknr an anesthesiologist. I would have to go to college for 12 years to become one. My brother says I am too confident and I wont make it.
Med School Insiders Hey doc, what do you think about regenerative medicine? Is it as competitive to get into add some of these fields that you’ve listed? Or less?
What are the top paying specialties when adjusted for malpractice insurance?
Hi, Can you post some video information about cardio thoracic surgeon. Also, please can you provide information, how to become a cardio thoracic surgeon in canada?
U know you’ve been watching too many medical videos when ads start popping up for ultrasound machines
C LOLOLOL
😂 😂
Lol yes, same here
Allah it just did for me as i read your comment😄
Or courses for medical exams :))
"Surgery is freakin awesome"
-Thats all I needed to hear
Ik right l love it
get sued anytime good luck doc
Well, the video maker is not a surgeon specialist so his insight is not comprehensive.
@@anemon8333 The video maker says he was doing a plastics residency, so he was on track to be a surgical specialist. That said, surgery may be awesome, but being a surgeon is rather demanding and not for everyone.
“this is simply the data... periodT”
I already made my mind to become a dermatologist so thanks for this video this is going to motivate me to work harder
Pathology is the best especially anatomical or forensics, because you don't have to worry about liability insurance, paying for DEA certificates, malpractice lawsuits and importantly no patients will bother you at midnight.
But it doesn't pay shit. And you have to deal with disease ridden corpses . Some of which have been rotting in a car trunk in the desert for two weeks… I'll never forget that one.
dcentral I can vouch for this
W and this though salaries are now on par with most general practitioners
Considering that I live on a $35k a year ROUGHLY. I get paid shit, Pathologist get paid VERY well. Plus, no patient and I wont get them killed. Pathology is my main goal, or Physical Therapy. The disease ridden corpses are the SAME disese ridden patient that died on you. Lol. Plus, once you breath it in you get used to it.
I really don't care if the specialty I'm going for isn't competitive, I'm doing what I'm passionate about and i don't care about money either.
Good job don’t let this video or anyone bring u down
So I'm not even in medical school, but I've been doing a bunch of research on specialties because I plan on attending medical school in the near future.
From all the reading I've done, this is exactly the 5 specialties I thought would be the most competitive.
can you let us know which specialties are in demand? where there are few doctors choosing to go into the field but the number of patients needing the service is increasing. such as an arthritis specialist.
Oluwaseun Fagbamila Primary Care
I realize this reply is months late, but I’d say any gynecological speciality would be a good bet. I’ve had vulvar lichen planus since 2004, and there are only a handful of vulvar specialists in the United States. It’s come a long way since I first started having symptoms, at least with available online information, but doctors are severely lacking. But there are thousands, possibly even hundreds of thousands, of women with vulvovaginal pain, with no doctors with the knowledge to treat. So, most women wait MONTHS to see a specialist because there just aren’t enough doctors to accommodate patients.
In my country the top list are :
1. Ophthalmology
2. Radiology
3. Dermatology
4. Nuclear medicine
5. Orthopedics
6. Cardiology
7. Neurology
8. ENT
9. Urology
10. Neurosurgery
I know this mail has been some time ago, but rings generally true even internationally. Ophthalmology eg caused many UK junior docs to join the army, as the access to speciality training was easier. Having done most specialities and have a Royal British diploma in both Surgery and EM (ER), and eg. having been a Neurosurgical Registrar over two continents etc. I have some legitimacy in commenting. The thing is, what you want to do in your 20s, is not always what you want to do in your 30s, 40s and so on. Most of medics are pluripotential, so always leave a sensible reserve option if option one do not work out. Medicine is a wonderfully diverse direction. You never need to treat a patient, talk to one, or you can see them all the time, see them 3D, work with their most secretive organs, see them only skin deep, or only talk...You can decide to work long hours or less, earnings being variable, but you should never live under the bread line. Etc. etc.
dermatology is at the top because of the good lifestyle that they have
Definitely a big part of it
man we need one for IMGs competitive specialties as well, maybe the spreadsheet only
A video on ‘so you want to be a dermatologist’
I want to become a family medicine doctor
Alo I'm watching these medicine videos and I'm VERY young
I wanna specialise in neurosurgery, but I know if I did I’d fuck up my life.. I don’t wanna live to work, rather work to live
where is Interventional Radiology? It's the most competitive speciality for 2 years running
my bf is trying to get matched into derm and he’s going through it all publishing research, trying to get into a fellowship etc before he tries to get matched. I didn’t know derm was number 1 but hopefully he gets matched lol
I really want to do plastics but I don’t have the motivation... I did two years of pre-med before realizing that I absolutely hated my degree and switched to archaeology. But the thing is, I still am really interested in plastics. I just don’t think I’m smart enough to pass the MCAT even though I’ve taken all the prerequisites :(
Actually, I was surprised when I saw dermatology on the top
Why are dermatology and plastic surgery for ever and always the most popular specialty to get in to? Is it purely the money? What does it say about the medical profession that the most competitive of us would choose a path that makes the most money?
Low risk, low acuity, easy to work with mid-levels, and high pay.
I'd like to see a video about sports medicine program residency =DD
So what happens if you don’t get into a residency?
Briana Olea-Rowe you never won’t get into your residency due to there being a shortage of doctors but it might not be in the field you want. (That’s UK, not sure about US)
You wait til next match season!
@@RK-ep8qy In the US MD doctors have something like a 97% match rate and DO have like 86% or something, so yes being a US MD means you'll almost always match into a residency.....but if you're IMG like from the Caribbean it's like 50%. And if you don't match your MD is clinically useless since you're not allowed to practice medicine in America. But you can still do consulting (though they favor prestigious schools like UCSF or Stanford) or do research, or be an assistant to a doctor who runs a private practice.
You go through SOAP (google it) after the match. If you don't succeed in that either, you shoud try to improve your application e.g. by doing more research and apply for the match in the subsequent year.
@@ameliasandoval8663 Hi Amy, that's why I said US doctors who are MD or DO. The 43,000 includes FMG and IMGs, who are the overwhelming majority of those who do not match.
Me sees neurosurgery as number 3 like we'll..... I'm not getting into that
Yes you will
What about cardiac surgery i thought it would be the hardest sinci its heart
I want to see a list for the least competitive specialties
Yes please
Ask yourself what specialty will give u a ton of money for least amount of work. Do the math. Math do not lie. People LIE!
MRI/Imaging Diagnosis specialists in my country. I know doctors that let the techs deal with the patient and work from home. In private practice, they make a lot of money.
@@rominac1389 That's correct. Its about the Benjamins.
@ Not entirely true. Neurosurgeons work sometimes 120+ hours a week, even the money isnt worth that time. If they wanted money they would've gone into business.
When your desired specialty is ranked #1...I’m honestly not discouraged, but encouraged to work harder😊
thats the spirit!
Good for you!

Who is here after watching the least competitive🤗

No it doesn’t silly it starts at 0:00
Jack The Ripper he’s being sarcastic
Y'all he said he's gonna make a whole video on why he quit residency, it's his own business and it's possible he quit for very personal reasons so let's give the guy some space, shall we?
Damn, I’ve been curious about this since the premier, can’t wait to watch this 😂
Dr. Jubbal, personally I think you can do whatever you think is best for you. I've been following your RUclips channel long time ago and I'm utterly sure you make decisions with consciousness, I do admire you because as MD sometimes we think that there is only one way to follow in medicine. You are changing the stereotypes, you are brave. Kind regards.
My cousin quit his orthopedic surgery residency and became a high school teacher. He’s never been happier, despite earning significantly less money. He is a very bright person, very motivated, but got into medicine for all the wrong reasons. He was very unhappy. He had a dream to teach high school kids, so one day he stopped worrying about what his parents would think, what his family would think, what his community would think, how he was going to pay back $200,000 in student debt.. all he thought about was if he wanted to not be miserable the rest of his life, it would be best to follow his dream. So he did.
@@jaysmith6013 What did he particularly hate about residency. Was it the work, long hours?
@@rashan2424
It’s not that he hated his residency. He had no passion for medicine. Always the brilliant, obedient, Desi son... he only went into medicine for the money, respect and most importantly it was his parents dream for their son to become a doctor. He just later discovered his true passion was to become an educator and that’s what he ended up doing 🤷♂️
I've always wanted to become a neurosurgeon since I was in 4th grade. I read Ben Carson's book and my interest has only grown over the past years. I'm 14 years now and I'm studying hard to get into a great school if God has it an ivy league as an international student. I really have keen interest on been a neurosurgeon even as a girl. Not because of the money but because I genuinely love it. I'd have to read hard, take care of my family balance my life and hold a strong relationship with God. I believe I can do it and will continue to have big dreams.
Oh, even I want to become a neurosurgeon and I'm currently 3td year med student.
I’m 12 and love the Idea of me becoming a othopedic surgeon not because of money because it fascinating and fun watching what they do. I just hope one day become one and I hope u do to. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

@@noreceptionn.r9134 me too,i reeeeaaallyy love immunology and just find it really interesting in general
Same I'm 15 I believe you can do it, just keep working hard. You iust have to look for the end result. Hard work always pays off, and ask God to guide you.
I love how after every point you made you had to reassure us that you're not degrading any speciality or putting anyone down - goes to show there are too many snowflakes out there that get offended by everything instead of taking the positive out of what people say.
Or goes to show there are too many people that eats a bowl of acidity flakes peppered with snowflake tears for breakfast and ssumes anyone but themselves will get triggered by them simply breathing while if the "warnings" weren't there they would be the first ones to cry over minor things which can be understood with a quick check of the sources (which nobody does) and call the video innacurate, skewed for a specific specialization while being offensive to the others.
And depending on what any person say, it's impossible "to take the positive out of it". Don't blame somebody else. If nobody likes what you say the problem is you, snowflake!
Dead ass
He has to stroke egos. It's not easy.
Anesthesiology Is what I am going for...I love it: The US is Big I don't mind a small town hospital, but what I do mind is NOT being an Anesthesiologist.
Hey, same goes to me, initially wanted general surgery, but now more keen on anaesthesiologist
Any future anesthesiologists? ✌🏽
Fascinating how much this varies by country. Here in Germany Dermatology is - to my knowledge - one of the easiest to get into/least competitive.
Agreed. In my country radiology is the top.
What about Ophto in Germany?
Yeah they did not figure out all the ways Americans monetized that spec.
I am in Croatia and dermatology is absolutely the hardest to get. Lot of doctors want to get that, both female and male. Also hospitals dont need much dermatologists as much as they need for example anesthesiologists. So maybe now once in 2 years you get 1 place for dermatologist per hospital, and that is maximum.
Exactly the same here in Czech Republic 👨⚕️
Honestly, I think what matters most is to do what you love! Yes there will be some specialties that will result in higher pay and better job opportunities but you are devoting your entire life to a particular field. Why not choose something you genuinely love? I mean you can still achieve success provided you are willing to put in the work... Going for those “prestigious” or “safe” options doesn’t guarantee personal fulfilment or lifelong happiness. If you put your mind to whatever you are passionate about, you can still go far! Just my thoughts...
Absolutely well said may Allah bless u for such comment
Definitely. Every specialty earns plenty of money. I'm quite sure that, in 10 years, you won't care whether you make 150k a year or 250k a year (or 500k a year). The lifestyle doesn't change that much -- working hours do change a lot. Most people can't find happiness when working 100 hours a week, regardless of pay.
The thing with surgery is that while you make more money, you have very little time and energy left to actually go out and enjoy your money. Meanwhile dermatology still makes lots of money (and there are also cosmetic and private dermatology clinics) but actually has some time left to go out and spend it. In my country (Netherlands) a dermatologist earns 5800-11000 euros a month. Since we have nearly no study debt (max 50.000 euros and most people less, our tuition is 2300 euros a year, so you can pay three years of tuition from your minimum monthly wage) and get paid relatively decent during residency (3600 euros as a first year to 4600 in your year before completing the programm). You have so much money. In comparison, the average income in the Netherlands is (3100 euros).
w netherlands
It's doesn't matter whether this specialty is competitive on not, every student preferably choose the specialty he/she love
Well said
Best of luck on your endeavour Dr., I think you're doing something great by pursuing the major problem that is the current Medical School education structure, the mental stresses, burnout and depression that thousands of med students experience.
Could you let us know why you quit? Please. I really don’t understand why you did it and I feel like we need to know. Hope everything is okay!! Have a good day Dr. Jubbal!
Too much emphasis on not offending anyone. That took up 2/3rds of the video!
I'm offended by him wasting my time on it!
Lmao its an edge of snowflakes, gotta cover ur ass
Can you blame him tho? The internet is hella sensitive
@@kanieraliapeng724 true!
Is cardiothoracic surgery or heart surgery not a top competitive speciality?? 🤔
Ivory Simon-Okube I think it’s a very difficult and esteemed specialty, but similar to neurosurgery, the unpredictable hours and long long training time before you start practicing makes it not top 5.
I know it may not be the most pertinent to you, but a second video on the most competitive specialties to match into as an IMG (and US IMG) would be greatly appreciated.
Also, was not surprised by the list, very good methodology, all made sense.
That's very helpful for IMGs. Please make a video regarding that topic, Dr. Jubbal!
IMG can match into any specialty. No restrictions, though of course outside family, internal, psych, you have near 0% chance of matching without connections or obscenely high Step 1 + 2 scores.
I’m interested in internal medicine or emergency medicine at the moment. People really shouldn’t care how their specialty compares to others, like you said being a doctor is impressive enough. Awesome video as always man!
have you pursued these
As someone with chronic ENT problems, I wanted to be an ENT. After informational interviews I decided I wasn’t as into the specialty as I thought. Not because it’s competitive but as a career changer post-bacc, I couldn’t see myself spending 5+ yrs for a surgical residency when I realized I’d prefer a specialty with more people interaction and long term relationships (primary care). But I could change my mind if I’m lucky enough to get to med school!
I want to become a Cardiologist ❤️❤️
Same. Open hear surgery sounds awesome
Sameee specifically pediatric cardiology
Me too although I am terrified of hours especially after I finish training. I don't mind working 80+ hours in residency and fellowship. But I don't think I can when I am 50
Same, I hope we both make it there at Gods will!
Cardio is da best.
I'm about to start college and my dream specialty is cardiac/cardiothoracic surgery and I'm surprised that it's not in the top 5 most competitive.
I think it takes forever to become one, that's the reason it is not that competitive?
You have to do a residency in general surgery then you can do a fellowship in cardiothoracic.
Echo'ing what DarkSkies said, it's bc u can't do cardiac surg for residency, it's a specialization after residency
@@jl9409 Well, not so much today. Today there are incorporated programs for both at once.
I was surprised! All this time, I thought the ROAD specialties would be the hardest specialties to get into since they have the best lifestyles. I'm also surprised the EM is not the top specialty, it seems like all the med students I talk to want to specialize in EM because of the stable hours and the good lifestyle. I love how you always thoroughly research information before you present it to us! Thank you for always working hard to give us good, quality content!
Lifestyle is awesome, but people still love money more.
Yikes! I thought getting into a cardiology residency would be pretty competitive but it didn't make top 5? That's good for me I guess...
I want to be a dermatologist but I didn’t know it was the most competitive:( what happened if you don’t get into a residency?
Choose a different one
get into proctology, also good lifestyle and they get to play around with Botox injections and rejuvenation as well these days.
Alyssa me too
Nearly impossible if you're an american MD and very hard to not match if you're a DO, but if you're IMG/FMG then yeah you are screwed in many ways since you aren't allowed to practice medicine without at least an internship (depends on state laws) and in many cases the full residency.
What about interventional radiology?
Bit late, but it’s up there
I am studying engineering, why RUclips recommends me this?
My specialty of choice is Internal Medicine...
I wouldn’t change it in the world for any amount of pay or more competitive speciality... for sure...
I still don’t understand why you quit your residency. Also, can you make a video about your UCLA undergrad experience?
I think he said he's gonna make a whole video about why he quit residency, if I had to guess either the workload was too much for him or perhaps the stress exacerbates his Crohn's in some way and for his health he left. That's just a guess though he hasn't specified any reason why he left yet
He put the explanation video up
I love being in high school wanting to be a dermatologist so I'm going to have to work a lot harder than I thought and I already knew I had to work hard
If you have places to be💀
Dermatology
Plastic surgery
Neurosurgery
Orthopaedic surgery
ENT

Saul Mena 18 here and still wanting to be a neurosurgeon !
No du😂 lol it takes 14-16 years in total to be a neurosurgeon. Suckssss. But that work will totally pay off
I agree with your analysis. You are a very well spoken doctor. Thanks for the info.
What advice do you have for helping to get into/become selected for your desired specialty?
me having dermatology my only passion and watching my dreams be crushed in front of my very eyes: 👁👄👁
same! but im going to work hard to get there
Don't give up, please.
I'm actually glad cardiothoracic surgery is not here.
I wanted to become a dermatologist but I saw how hard it was going to be, and also the fact that I wouldn't interact with patients as much as I thought. I became a medical esthectian instead and work with people more closely everyday 😊
I hate that some people get so offended that you have to give that monologue in the beginning.
Where all my hopeful cardiothoracic surgeons at?
Hereeee
Neurosurgery has always been my dream despite it one of the hardest specialists in surgery i would never give it up .. ITS MY DREAM AND IM GONNA MAKE IT REAL 🧠❤
Go for it! Godspeed! 💪😁
I think that the videos should have subtitles (in English, and others languages) would make the videos much better, and a lot of different peoples would watch (like people from others countrys) . It's just a suggestion. ❤ By the way, Love your video! (Sorry for any gramatical error)
I am Indian I can understand english
Getting in Radiology is very competitive in India
I thought interventional cardiology made the most besides ortho. I thought it was Ortho, Cards, Neurosurg for top 3
Thank god Rads isn't competitive then.
In the UK there is a chronic shortage of Radiologists. According to my uncle, a distinguished Radiologist, the whole-body nature of the discipline and the fast moving technical developments mean that you are committing yourself to a lifetime of gruelling professional development just to stay up-to-date.
As it's not the most glamorous College, they have difficulty in attracting good applicants.
On the other hand, if you *are* prepared to make the commitment it's a fascinating field and you'll be in high demand from potential employers.
Does this apply in the US?
i thought neuro and ortho was gonna be top, because i found them to be the hardest. Do hardest to do rather than competiveness
Ben diger butun bölümlerin yaptigi işlere sonsuz saygiliyim hepsinin ayri ayri çok çok çok önemli yerleri var❤ kişilik yapıma radyoloji uyuyor ögrenme biçimime radyoloji uyuyor❤
Dermatology is higher than Plastic surgery because more people are willing to pay more money for cosmetic procedures that are not life threatening, but only to look better.
It will be difficult to enter dermatology, but their work is quite superficial and of little use to the seriously ill ...

The moment that ruined my life. I’ve been knowing I wanted to be a derm since I was like 13, even before I found out they were paid a lot.
I knew it’d be a competitive field, and I’m not the smartest person out there, but I was willing to do so many years of schooling for it becoz I knew it’s what I loved.
But now finding out it’s THE most competitive field rly changes the game a lot.
Now I’m back at square one. Second guessing myself and trying to find any other thing that might interest me. I’m a hs senior now tryna find out what I rly wanna do
once you doubt yourself it's game over for you .
Hs senior lmao. You have 4 years of rough premed classes, MCATS, 3 brutal years of med school, Step tests, and a whole lot more. Don't even concern yourself with something like Derm vs another specialty. Just try taking Gen Chem first, half the premeds I knew dropped out then.
Now I am even more determined to become a neurosurgeon 😘😘
Dermatology is sinking like a rock now that NPs are doing it without appropriate training
Alright I wanted to be a dermatologist....I had no idea this was the hardest to get into. That’s really disappointing because I know if I apply myself I can get good grades, but if I’m held in competition with those who at worst are above average then I have no chance 😞
Their goes my dream of being a neurosurgeon 🤣 lol jk. Still planning to get there
I am soon gonna enter third year of my residency in medical Oncology. Currently on rotation in internal medicine . I wanted to go to neurology but didnot match in my country in neurology and matched in oncology (my second priority) but i am loving it now .
Here in my country dermatology and cardiology are most competetive among medicine and alied . While in surgery and alied its gynaecology n orthopedics.
No wonder all the Indian moms have big heads about these top specialities.....now I understand. thanks
I want to be a neurologist
If i was to think of my personality and choose a specialty, I would lost these:
Emergency room medicine.
Rural health (in Australia the rural areas are vast and those living in them are underserved and to work in them you have to have a very wide skill set to deal with anything that could come through the door)
Cardiology. (Because I find the heart absolutely fascinating to study)
Intensive at. (Because intensive care is inherently fascinating, with those being treated often having undergone intensive surgery, suffering from systemic infections, having suffered mass trauma or other life threatening event requiring invasive monitoring and monte to minute care.)
I would also consider obstetrics, trauma or infectious diseases. Because I find these fields inherently fascinating too. In infectious diseases I can not only help the person affected but I can their family and peers. In obstetrics I can save mums and bubs, and help keep families together. In trauma I can save lives and mend the body when it’s broken in an accident. I’m of course using very simplified terms I’m aware. But emergency medicine has always been and prob only will always be the top choice with me.
i have a dream of doing Emergency medicine I'm premed and my friends think I'm crazy
Well you’re friends should be more supportive of your dreams😕😕
Here is the truth, I'm getting ready to graduate from medical school soon and those who get into these specialties are one of two kinds of people: 1) Those who absolutely love medicine and it's all they do and 2) Those who have crazy discipline beyond what is capable of most people. If you love medicine and the specialty you're aiming for, then it will just come natural to you (there are exceptions like test taking skills, english as a first language, and other stuff that can prevent you from getting into these fields). For the 99% of others who are pursuing medicine for the money and status (do not be fooled, most people are doing it for this reason, not saying they don't LIKE medicine, but most people do not LOVE medicine) you will need discipline. One of my classmates is a top performer, will admit he does not LOVE medicine, but that he works to get the grades and scores he does. This man eats the same meal, EVERY-SINGLE-DAY... He works out and studies like a beast too... He has sacrificed relationships, friends and even family to try and get into ortho and believe me has scores and stats to get into any program in the nation. On the other hand, there is a guy in my class that absolutely loves medicine and all he does is think about it. He isn't even American, he is from Egypt, but came here, learned english, and is incredibly passionate about it. While we watch sports, play video games, youtube and all our other activities for fun, THIS GUY FREAKING READS ROBIN'S PATHOLOGY AND VARIOUS OTHER BOOKS I NEVER EVEN TOUCHED DURING MEDICAL SCHOOL. His passion is inspiring but there isn't a single thing in this life I'm that passionate about, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself pretty bummed out when around these kinds of people in medical school. I'm the third type of person, I like medicine (DO NOT LOVE IT), and I'm not that disciplined to be quite honest (more than the average person obviously to get into and finish medical school without delays). I'm a very type B person and I'm in a sea of type A people. One thing this gives me an advantage in is interacting with people and being a standout kind of guy in my program (voted class president and other stuff). On wards, I kill it. I have nothing but glowing recommendations and write ups from my time on the wards. I write this to really say that it's out there to get it. If you want to be a plastic surgeon, ortho surg, derm, neuro, you can get it! But don't kill yourself for something you are not that passionate about, it's not worth the money I promise you...
Nicholas Arnold Thank you I really needed that I’m so passionate about trying to enter neurosurgery I wanted to go to UofL but this video made me think I had no chance
damn, Nalini must be a smart-ass then... but i just want to ask something, is it wise if i put neurosurgeon and plastic surgery on the NRMP? I mean, those are my 2 dream specialties and both are competitive, and please explain ur answer
I wanted to become dermatologist but here are my friends they told me its not good career and it's not well paid they want to become cardiology so it discouraged me but now I want it 🥰
How hard is it to solve cases which Dr house solved in house md
What do you mean by matching ?? How do you match a specialty?
at the end of med school you 'match' into a specialty. This means that a place that you interviewed at for residency wants you and you wanted them. That's the simple answer.
Interesting. Surprised that Neurosurgery isn't #1.
I wanted to see the rest of them listed in the description. Just me?

The best doctor in my opinion is a optbmaligist especially cataracz surgery is the best to me
Isn't cardiology a tougher one?
Prasanna Kumar no cardiology has very unpredictable data and as you can learn a lot of the knowledge from background
Why don't Americans just use $/hour instead of $/year? It makes much more sense. Neurosurgery makes a lot of $/year but not as much $/hour as, for example, orthopedic surgery. Neurosurgeons work longer. Absolute numbers are quite useless as opposed to relative numbers. It tells a lot more when you take workload into account.
