    Whenever I go to a model railroad expo, I always look for locals and common interests and THEN make a deal. It's always nice to see people share your interests. Also, your son is very cute! Thanks James!

    Another advantage is joining a model railroad club. Always fun to not only set up your stuff but help the vendors as well.

    I managed to snag a Bachmann DCC controller and the end of a train show a few years ago using these tips for only $50! Thanks very much!

    When I modeled in N scale my era was the billboard reefer era before the ICC banned billboard reefers. I tried to make sure that I stuck to it. Only problem was that I started buying cars I already had. That wasted my train money. So, I came up with an Excel spreadsheet that listed my collection of cars by manufacturer and stock number that also contained the railroad name and road numbers, color and what made it individual. I carried a printout of that spreadsheet to the shows. When I saw a car that fit my era I checked my printout to make sure that I didn’t already own it. Worked great. Saved me money. Over several years I had over 400 billboard reefers and couple hundred wood side boxcars.

    In the area I live, between 3 stores prices can vary by over $100 for the same Athearn Genesis engine. One store you can find different prices for same item so you have to look to make sure. Most dealers in my area don't go to shows to much effort. Your right Ebay seems to be crazy for prices on trains. Nice show, glad your son had a good time.

    Hey have a tip, get a table which can range from 15-20 bucks. Make sure you plenty of items for but before the show is open to the public go out look for stuff. Then you can resell all the bargins you dont want still for a ok deal to someone else and still make some cash.

  • @bmcewen65
    @bmcewen65 11 лет назад

    Well another tip and it all depends how you approach someone, if you buy a product and are at a show and there are working displays at that show, you can politely ask if you can run the locomotive on the track to verify that it works. I believe that a lot of fellow modelers would understand and would be glad to help out or at least I would do that for a fellow modeler.

    Great train show advice.
    Some times the better deals is under the table..I once got a Atlas S2 for $30.00 by looking at the goodies underneath the table.
    At another show I picked up three Athearn BB locomotives for $60.00 that's $20.00 each.

  • @OffTheWalls88
    @OffTheWalls88 11 лет назад

    You're so correct about those Athearn genesis rolling stock. I used to be able to buy those csx trinity grain cars for 25 bucks. I see them on ebay bid for $105.00 each! (not including shipping) i mean that's locomotive prices and i need to find these vendors in my area! Thanks for your vid man they always give me good ideas.

    Tips I have found helpful and have worked.
    1.Talk. If you show that you really need this and are going to use it, the seller will almost always give you a lower price even if you dont ask.
    2,Tell them your budget. If they know you want something and cant afford it they might lower the price.
    3. go around at the very end of the train show, and when they make an offer for something *they will* .... tell them you only have this much money
    "Hey I can give you this for 30 dollars" "Oh sorry I only have 20." "Um, Ok fine that will work" *SCORE!*

    You can usually find rare items, find out about new products and even negotiate prices with some vendors. I've found a few used buildings and locos for cheap before.

  • @RoycePhillips
    @RoycePhillips 11 лет назад

    I was at the Greater Houston TS and one of the vendors had about 6 used AC4400s and 1 SD70 for $35 each (and the used ones on Ebay go from $40 - $65). Half were Santa Fe Warbonnets and the rest were Union Pacifics including the SD70. I bought one of the ac44s and it runs well. UP #9456.

  • @1babysag
    @1babysag 11 лет назад

    Another suggestion. Bring a pad and pen so that you can write down prices. You will find that some vendors sell the same object for much less. I know this is true for decoders and rolling stock. I always tell my favorite vendor what the product is being sold for somewhere else and ask him what is his best price. I hope this is of value to you.

    I hope you can make it down to the Lincoln train show. The Lincoln Area Railway Historical Society will be hosting our annual spring train meet on Feb 16 & 17, 2013 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, NE. I think it would be a hoot to have you do some filming and do a video report on the club's show! We will have vendors, clinics, silent auction and a model/photo contest, so I think it will be worth your time to come visit us.

    Judging by the turnout, I'd not be able to go to one of those things unless it was early in the morning before the crowd gets there. A wheelchair doesn't maneuver through a crowd like that. Enjoyed the video, got a lot of info from it. Thank you.

      Aye Leeyun It shows an old lady in a wheel chair with plenty of room bc it is not crowded..

    • @GerryBuck
      @GerryBuck 10 лет назад

      Still leery. I use a wheeled walker now, have used a wheelchair as well, my experience with both is that you become invisible to most people, they walk in front of you from a side aisle like you're not there. I have even had some cuss me out for being 'in the way'. Those kinds of things are what made me say what I did and I stand by it.

    • @jlwii2000
      @jlwii2000  10 лет назад +2

      Gerry Buck I guarantee you if I ever witness someone telling anybody in a wheelchair to get out of the way when I'm at a train show, I will chew them out on the wheelchair person's behalf. That is beyond rude.

    • @Sms68
      @Sms68 10 лет назад +1

      Gerry Buck Gerry, Yes, there are rude People everywhere. I work out at the Gym with a Guy who is in a wheel chair. He fell 2 story's on a job and is paralyzed from the waist down.His brother brings him in every day and he works out his upper body. He is the nicest Guy and everyone there knows him and respects him bc people always have excuses they are too tired or not enough time. Screw the rude people. I'd be the 1st to clear a path for you my Man. All the Best...

    I've tried going to train shows. Found them to be a complete waste of time. Mostly all tyco dealers and not much else. I'm an ho modeler of BNSF and CP/SOO,running 100+ Kato's and 25+ PK2's (all loco's) with nearly 2000 rolling stock. Basically when I go to a train show, I get bored and want to go home.For the last 2 years I have been buying on Ebay to complete my collection of Kato's and PK2's. I've bought about 50 loco's with an average price of $80. Hobby stores(no inventory) are a thing of the past, most everything is sold on Ebay. I recommend saving your money and time and skip the train shows.

    NEVER go full price on items. I always ask for lower . $15? “Would you do 13 dollars ?”. Even if they say no at first, I’ve had someone COME UP TO ME, and then agree to the price. These people aren’t here for a profit. These trains have been lying around and they want a little cash back

    When making a layout, do you have to make a loop or can you start on one end and end on the other side.

    • @lehighandnewengland
      @lehighandnewengland 8 лет назад

      Build it whatever way you want but I recommend a loop because it's boring running trains from point to point and loops you can let the train run and you can leave the room while it's running

    • @ashevilletrainman6989
