UGears Hurdy Gurdy Kit vs. Homemade Noise Box: Can they make music?

  • Turns out the best way to make a hurdy gurdy sound great is to just completely alter the sound! (I kid, I kid!) But I did assemble the UGears Hurdy Gurdy model kit, then hacked together a homemade drone-making monstrosity, and finally made some fun experimental noise music using both of them. Let's hurt our ears together!
    00:00 - Intro
    01:34 - Unboxing/ What's in the Box?
    02:33 - Assembly + Tips
    05:26 - Showing/Playing the Completed Model
    07:46 - Making ANOTHER drone instrument/ noisemaker
    09:34 - Introducing the Humble Grumble
    10:36 - Making Music with Both of these Contraptions
    12:58 - Outro: Laughing at my absurdity. Also... write a script already, OK?
    Per usual, all music written by me: Kristin R. Anderson
    Enjoy?

    Since I had a request for the Humble Grumble files (guess the name is sticking around!), I thought I'd pin a comment up here. Anyone who wants to take a stab at making/altering this nonsense build is free to do so. Zipped stl files can be located at:
    www.composerkristin.com/humblegrumble.html
    I'll come back to update if I change the location later. And... idk, link back to this vid if you make something/remix it? I'm seriously not precious about these files, though. Have at it everyone! :)
    UPDATE: Version 2 files are up at the link!

      Your design would actually function if you added a bridge on the crank side of the wheel, and a nut near the tuners, such that the height of both allowed your string to just barely touch the wheel. You would also have to make the wheel perfectly round and perfectly centered on the axle. To function, your arrangement needs two ends between which the string can vibrate (these being the bridge and the nut) AND some third thing to make the string vibrate, normally a pick, or a bow, but in this case your wheel.

  • @NicholasKonradsen
    @NicholasKonradsen 2 года назад +19

    if you'd like to get it to make more of a droney sound rather than an 'Eeeeeek!!!!' then you need to use less rosin, and the main issue is definitely the pressure! The strings should lightly press the wheel, and shouldn't even really have a bend where the wheel is! If you are able to change anything to make that possible you may get some pleasant rustic droning notes out of it! Good luck :)

    • @ComposerKristin
      @ComposerKristin  2 года назад +4

      Ah... as a violin player, LESS rosin is definitely not my first instinct. :) I'll have to play around with it some more and see if I can do anything to make it sound a little better (besides my... um... creative solution). I can't remember anymore if I tried another octave lower to lessen the string pressure. Great tips! Thanks!

    • @NicholasKonradsen
      @NicholasKonradsen 2 года назад +1

      @@ComposerKristin that's string tension, not pressure! they are related but not the same, the issue is the equivalent of if you way over rosined your bow and then pressed as hard as you physically can onto your strings, and then pulled the bow slowly! the strings you have should work for your purposes, i would suggest either making the wheel smaller or making the bridge higher! something like that. If you want any suggestions or anything feel free to ask!

      @@NicholasKonradsen Wheel could be lower and the same size for the same goal too...
      Edit: Her design has the strings anchored across the instrument linearly (spaced far apart). Violins and traditional 'Gurdies' have the strings anchored close together, more radially, on a tail piece. This affects how well it plays as well, as the strings experience a less even force across the bridge and wheel.

    Yeah, I put together a UGears Hurdy Gurdy and had the same results. It was fun to put together and interesting to see how it all fits together, but at the end of the day its just a model not a real instrument. I have thought about trying to make my own, but havent had the time or space yet to do it, so I loved seeing your self made version as well.

  • @MabInstruments
    @MabInstruments Год назад +3

    In my opinion, you get a better sound out of your Ugears hurdy gurdy than those I have heard made by other people. I like the sound of the humble grumble. Usually, the wheel of a hurdy gurdy has the axle in the centre. Having it off centre, as you have, gives a sound that interests me. Personally, I would probably try to get a similar sound in a more controllable way by having a separate wheel that is for bending the string or by using a very low tension string so that the speed the wheel is turned makes a large difference to the pitch.

    • @ComposerKristin

      Interesting ideas. Yeah, my Humble Grumble... needs work, LOL. I may design something completely different using some of the lessons I've learned (err.. what not to do), but it definitely was a fun/ridiculous experiment. You gotta start somewhere! :)

    UGears:
    Did you use the wax at all? If I remember correctly its basically there to help lubricate the gears and the main shaft for the wheel. Makes everything a lot smoother and helps the crank turn fairly easily.
    Still not the best Hurdy Gurdy in terms of sound despite a lot of other people saying it sounds better if you apply the rosin and tune it correctly. Not extremely horrible, but its very hard to get right and because the construction has all these gears, "sharp" angles rubbing against each other, and no real resonance chamber due to gaps and many small pieces in construction.
    Looks very, very cool though.
    I myself am tryin to get my hands on a Nerdy Gurdy kit. Looks good and sounds very passable if built correctly and tuned well.

    • @ComposerKristin
      @ComposerKristin  Год назад +1

      I did use the wax, but it's clear it didn't help all that much. It's also one of those builds that you don't know if you're doing everything right until you're done, and at that point it'd be waaay to much of a pain to try and take it apart again. Oh well! :)

    Your right it isn't really to play. It's crank shaft is made out of cheap breakable wood. as you stated very hard to crank. I bought one put it together, going by the instructions. Used the rosen and the wax it work for a while but the pressure on the shaft when trying to crank it, broke the shaft, I repaired it using some match sticks, Glue and som of the speared parts. Its just a model. It does still crank, bout the same as it did before. don't dare playing it because it might break again. The design does look beautiful. But I wouldn't concider it a actual musical instrument. I''ve found another model kit that is better, called "Nerdy Gurdy" It too has lazer cut parts but the shaft is metal and so is some of the parts. It also the actual size of a real Hurdy Gurdy too! Also if you can afford a CNC Machine for lazer cutting the parts out for you. there is a down loadable app, that lets you cut out the parts on your CNC Machine, to build your own Hurdy Gurdy.

    as a home-made gurdy maker myself i can attest it is a labor of love and trial and error. i would recommend a tagelharpa next, you'd do a good job with one and it'd be playable. I've made two from cigar boxes so far, the wine crate bass one is next.

    I finished my uGears HG fairly recently... Having left it about half finished for several years... And was accepting of it's less than stellar sound. Though i have gotten it to improve by using the little wheel to lift the pressure off the wheel for the melody string. It also makes the crank easier to turn. It's for sue not a performance instrument, but tweaking for the best sounds possible can be done!

    LOL, I made the same ugears hurdy gurdy a few years ago, and it sounded about the same. I reached out to the HG community to genuinely ask for advice on how to improve the sound and they said this was a toy (a joke) and can't compare to the real thing. Then a few nice hg players invited me over to their place to try out a real hg and what a difference it was. I also recently made a 3D printed violin! Looks like we worked on some similar projects!
