hmm they definitely exaggerated the vibrancy and richness of the sound it can make in their advertising. thanks for the review!
maybe with better strings on there and some one who is a real good hurdy-gurdier you could sound better. I just wish it was a larger size, I think that would help too.
The motor esque whirring from it kills it the most. And the fact that pressing the keys is almost louder than the sound produced from the string.
@@selectivevisions I was thinking about putting real nylon guitar strings on there to see if it would help.
Damian Giese yeah that’s the point we are making in the advert on facebook I think they use a recording of actual hurdy gurdy to make you think the sound is richer than it is I came here to see what it actually sounds like and was massively disappointed.
It's like $70 pressed cheap wood model not a $700 custom built instrument. It's meant for people with a mechanical/puzzle mind who enjoy musical instruments
Sounds like a gramophone recording of a Hurdy-Gurdy. I like the clicking, personally. Sounds like a metronome or someone keeping time on a hand drum frame.
Reminds me of the time I ordered the submarine from the Johnson Smith catalog
part of me wants to buy one and then do some DIY lutheiring to see how much I can improve the sound.
I would imagine playing it through Logic or other audio sequencer with some sound treatment would make it sound truly great... build a system of cogs attached to a mill to keep it whirring.
awesome
I really want this kit lol sure, it doesn’t sound great but it’s a beautiful piece to display and I bet you could improve the sound quality with different string
did you sand your wheel and use rosin? this sounds much worse than mine, no offense......
Sounds like a rob zombie movie
this was an awesome puzzle i have much fun. But the sound of my hurdy gurdy is definitly a nightmare...
why sounds my hurdy gurdy so terrible and yours so clear?
Just luck i guess
Seems fun to build, but $70 is INSANELY cheap for a gurdy, and it shows sonically. Damn. Are there ANY decent gurdys out there sub-$1k?? I REALLY want one but I can't justify dropping several thousand dollars on such a niche instrument. For what it's worth I have the same problem with pedal steel guitars.
it's like that for bicycles too, they are either 300$ or 3000$, but nothing in between!

You could try a nerdy gurdy kit. It needs assembly, but I should sound decent if constructed right and proper tuning was done.
NErdy Gurdy is pretty affordable, but the price may increase if you order it pre made. They are a lovely small company though so id give them a look.
I have put together the Lyra da Vinci, which was one of the best products that I have purchased! It came together just right. The "sound wheel" was just right when I made it, but I thought that I could get a better sound out of it... so I sanded and re-lubricated it, and now it doesn't sound quite the same. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it sound "normal" again?... Sand it more/lubricate it more/anything? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you for any input you can provide!
Mine barely works so I dont know
Looks like it is fun to assemble. But the sound is worse than dragging a cat by the tail. 😀
lol like music from the Witcher games
Do you think using a little PVA glue on the none moving parts would be beneficial or pointless?
Sounds good to me!
Do you think it'll hold up metal strings for better sounds??
Probably not, but you could try!
It’s not made for the tension, it might break it
Glad I saw this before I bought one. Underwhelming, I’d say.
It's times like this I envy the deaf
Would you say this could be a decent tool for someone to learn the instrument
Yes but i would recommend getting a real one, this is more of a toy.
A low end quality hurdy gurdy 1000 dollars they are hand made like violens
I’m thinking about getting this as a beginner. Where did you learn to play? Or are you more self taught?
self taught with just a couple of lessons and books
I think my ears are bleeding
Yaknow, I weirdly like it...
Sounds like a sh#t, but as a puzzle it is awesome!!!
2:54 This looks like those cheese telemarketing commercials, where one of the guys operates the whatever is "the usual X" is in comparison to the one being marketed and does a deliberatelly bad job.
Yeah. The Hurdy Gurdy doesn’t even sound like the rest from the other videos about it. It may be because he doesn’t know how to play it right, but who knows, maybe he has it tuned wrong.
Yikes.even the official demo sounded terrible. The crank is louder than the string sound. It's not expensive but I would pay double if they made it sound decent.
U Gears is more of a model, not a real instrument to play. it's a beautiful in design but the crank shaft is made out of cheap wood which breaks easily if you crank it to hard trying to turn the crank. which happened to mine. Nerdy Gurdy is a Hurdy Gurdy kit also. But it has some metal shafts for the crank. You do have to purchise some parts from the hardware store, but it plays and sounds a lot better. It is a real Hurdy Gurdy instrument,. not a model.
It is for children
Well good for a toy I guess but after watching this I no longer want it
still pretty fun, though!
Big thanks to this guy, I would’ve been disappointed.
It looks like he is doing his best to make it sound terrible :D
It does that all on its own. Considering what he's working with, its actually pretty impressive.
Wow... that thing is shit.
This sounds horrid
What do you expect from a cheap toy 😂 idiot. Fun to build & fun to mess about with, who cares how it sounds ? Built one myself & had fun doing so. Of course it won’t sound like the real thing, they cost £££’s 😂
Horrible sound. Sorry.
It's more of a toy than an instrument though
Hurdy Gurdys are already historically regarded as annoying. A cheap one is even more annoying
Who regarded them as annoying? Just curious.
@@ThornForTheWynn nobles, after they lost their trendiness centuries ago, and they were delegated as an instrument for beggars & the blind.. they even made people carry licenses to use them, since their sound was often thought to be haunting (which, to be fair..)
@@Riplee Having listened to enough Witcher 3 OSTs, yeah, they really are haunting. It's the entire point.
I don't generally leave critical reviews, but despite your sincere attempt to give the instrument a fair review, that is a horrible sounding instrument that sounds nothing like a hurdy gurdy; this is like one of the those crappy plastic guitars you buy for kids with plastic wire for "strings".
Yes i agree it is just a toy
It's a puzzle/mechanical kit, not an actual instrument.
