- the 1977 New York Yankees against the backdrop of New York City. Yankee superstar Reggie Jackson (Daniel Sunjata) and manager Billy Martin (John Turturro) are locked in a perpetual state of warfare. Jackson was a perfect foil for the scrappy Martin, a popular former Yankee player and reminder of the less complicated past of the team and the city. While owner George Steinbrenner (Oliver Platt) was a autocratic boss, he was also intent on keeping his promise to delivering a World Series title. The show also features subplots concerning the NYPD's pursuit of the Son of Sam serial killer that summer and the devastating blackout and resultant widespread looting in July, all while the city suffered through financial bankruptcy and massive municipal layoffs. Another subplot focused on the 1977 New York City Mayoral race featuring incumbent mayor Abraham Beame, former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, future Governor Mario Cuomo, and Congressman Ed Koch, the eventual winner.
John Turturro is a hell of an actor!! I thought he did a great job as Billy Martin in this mini-series!! (He perfectly captured Martin's insecurity and self-destructiveness.)
Billy IMO is the greatest on field manager in the history of the game, his demons always held him back unfortunately....btw wow what a series...i keep watching it over and over again and Im a Phillies fan but the Yankees are now my American league team as i have now followed their entire history and plan to go to a Yankee game this year....all because of this series

Yes because Thurman was more of a child than Jackson. Yet they did shun Jackson for saying that silly arrogant stuff lol.
Munson was a great player but he was also an idiot. He didn't understand that baseball is a business and selling tickets and getting media attention are just as important as winning. Reggie was a big star because he had a personality and Munson didn't.
Reggie came from a wild team himself in Oak, clubhouse brawls etc but between the lines they got it done
As a Met fan during those days, at least their owner wanted to win. The Mets traded Tom Seaver in June 1977, while The Yankees owned NYC.
The Bronx is Burning is the best miniseries of all time. It takes us under the iceberg that is the strife between Reggie and Billy. Reggie has the demands of the contract and his stardom. Billy is constantly insecure about Steinbrenner constantly holding his job hostage. It's also a generational conflict as well. The show also portrays accurately how indispensable Thurman Munson was to the team. He held the team together even when Billy was an absolute booze soaked train wreck. The Yankees looked to be a dynasty when Thurman Munson was tragically killed in a plane crash 2 years later. With Munson gone, they couldn't get over the top in post season in 80 and 81. When Jackson left after 81, the Yankees never even came close to a World Series again until 1996.
Munson was pretty much done as an All Star caliber player. Bad knees and an troublesome shoulder reduced his defensive value as a catcher. He could still hit singles, but never offered much power. Thurman had decent speed on the bases early in his career, but by 1979, he was a step slower. The Yankees won 103 games in 1980. Rick Cerone had an excellent season behind the plate and at the bat, as well. What hindered the Yankees much more than losing Munson was losing Rivers and not really finding a replacement for him.
The 1979 Yankees were short on starting pitching as Catfish was really bad. They acquired Tommy John and he was terrific, but they only had Guidry and John and not much else after them. Goose broke his thumb breaking up a fight and missed quite a bit of time. Ron Davis filled in decently, but wasn't the same. The Yankees probably should've won in 1981, but some odd tactical choices in that series by Lemon cost them.
Still, 5 AL East titles from 1976-1981 and 3 AL Pennants is really good.
if martin would have quit the booze he probably would have been fine
Steinbrenner gave a great speech to the team. This was the greatest "soap opera" ever.

Fun Fact: at 39:52 when he asks for "Steve" to call them a cab, he's meant to be talking to my grandfather. He used to work at the bar this scene was filmed at, and he was originally meant to insult one of the men as a joke in the scene. Unfortunately, he had just gotten his hair cut before the scene was shot, and they didn't like that his hairstyle was out of date for the show. (I guess they didn't want to waste extensions on him since he was just a random guy in the scene and not an important character). Also, John Turturro isn't drinking fake booze in this scene. He specifically asked to have real liquor in his cup, and apparently drank an insane amount due to retakes.

When Reggie and Thurman had the sit down dinner, Munson forgot that Jackson had three World Series rings with Oakland and Munson never earned a ring until 1977!
That is not the point.... It's about a willingness to work with out getting ahead of yourself in believing that you are indeed the only straw in the store... and everyone must use that straw and only that straw. It wasn't just about the straw in the lone drink. Thurman proved his point... He is not insecure with his life as there are more things to life than winning a championship in life rather than going home to an empty house. Reggie as sure as he was of himself, was insecure about his rep proving. Munson was not, win or lose.
@@robvegart , I NEVER said Thurman was insecure! Sir, he was one of my FAVORITE Yankees for your information and we knew how gritty and talented he was! I am glad HE got two WS rings too! Hey, I am glad they were both successful together and please let’s leave it at that and I was also going along with the movie (who knows what actually happened in real life), but let’s clear this misunderstanding! I was also stating a matter of fact about Reggie’s success in Oakland and Thurman was successful every year whether he won a WA ring or not! Thank you!!!!
winning world series are about more than one player. Those Oakland teams were better than the '76 Yankees. And the '72 A's won the series without Jackson even playing...

The 70s were as crazy as the 60s and I lived in both.
But the 90's made the 60's look like the 50's.
@@daveyboy_ Well lets see about that, we had over 700 riots from 1964 to 1977, three major world leaders assassinated from 1963 to 1968. We landed on the moon in 1969. And while all of this was going on we had 15 years of Vietnam where we killed 2.5 million people. Now the 90s was a pussy cat compared to that, because I can’t remember what the 90s are famous for except the death of my mom and wife.

I always wondered about the Steinbrenner scenes when he's on the phone, and then interrupted by someone. In this ep. he talks to someone named "Milt," who is idk. The scenes when he's talking on the phone are some of my favorites: Steinbrenner on the phone before the Miller Lite commercial? Forget it!
I watched the As in Kansas City and they lost constantly, they move to Oakland and win 3 championships in a row.
The incident around the 12:00 mark where Billy accuses Reggie of “second guessing his decisions in front of teammates” is discussed in detail in Reggie’s first book. That could have led to Martin boiling over after the misplay on the ball hit by Rice.
Billy asked Reggie what he thought. Reggie told him what he thought. If you want to hear certain answers to questions then you shouldn’t ask them
16:00 - Reggie has stated that backup Catcher Fran Healy was his best friend on the team.
Probably his only friend.
Slight observations I noticed (having followed the Tigers since the late 70's-I notice these things):
1. The Yankees didn't win it for Billy that night; they lost 2-1 against Mark Fidrych (RIP).
2. In 1977, Tiger Stadium was green all the way around; it only became blue after the renovation following that season.
3. The Yankees would have been in the 1st base dugout that night.
Cubs are my team but this was one of the best mini-series I have ever seen! BTW - 19:30 - In real life Reggie kicks Billy's ass; too big, too strong and much younger......BUTTTTT, Billy gets a few shots in and Reggie DOES NOT come out unscathed. Martin was TOUGH as nails!

And ed whitson beat the heck out of billy, possibly breaking billy’s arm.
They both would have done a lot of damage to each other. Jax is younger and stronger, Martin is an experienced, accomplish brawler.
@@stevensica89 Correct. Whitson was 4 inches taller, 26 years younger, and 30 pounds heavier. And billy still broke a rib and split eddie's lip. Not unscathed.
It was Hank Bauer who threw the punch at the Copacabana, according to Billy.
It wasn't Bauer. The guy who was heckling Sammy Davis Jr. was beaten up by one of the club's bouncers.

31:29 Movie goof, Martin's entering from the wrong side. The 3rd base dugout was for the Tigers. The visitors sat on the 1st base side.
Even if Reggie didn’t hustle after the ball, you DO NOT embarrass a player like that on the field. Billy knew what he was doing and it was deliberate. He wanted to humiliate Reggie. Can you see Joe Torre doing that? Billy could have taken him out and addressed it with him in the clubhouse, not in the dugout.
I cant see Joe Torre doing anything requiring personality.

Its supposed to be set in 1977 but at 9:00 the detective is driving a 1985 -86 Chevy Impala. Oh well, doesn't detract at all, still a great video series.

As you see the replay Reggie didn't loaf after the ball he did charge in. Billy just didn't like the way he played sometimes. Billy was wrong for taking out Reggie for Paul Blair and showing him up.
he had zero tolerance with Jackson, even if he thought Jackson loafed, it wasn't so egregious that he couldn't have given him the benefit of the doubt, or even just say some thing in the dugout after the inning is over. Martin went too far. I think Martin was the best manager ever but he hurt his team by giving jackson a hard time for no good reason. they won, but Martin was losing his mind during these years.
@@sportsrevisited9699 That's because Billy, like Steinbrenner, had a massively huge ego where if the team wasn't 162-0 every season, then the team wasn't worth managing. Plus, being the manager gave Billy a big power trip which he was too addicted to; he loved the glory that it gave him as Yankees' manager.
Thurman you said you wanted a Rolls Royce like Reggie, remember. Ego too huh. You never fight with your team in public, especially on tv.

"When the team was on the road, you'd come back to your hotel late at night, and if your phone light was on, you knew that either there had been a death in the family or George was looking for you. After a while, you started to hope that there had been a death in the family.

Ed whitson was 30 at the time. Billy was 56. Billy cracked eddie's rib and split his lip, and whitson broke martin's ulna. Whitson was also 4 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier in addition to being the 26 years younger. The 'old man' gave as good as he got.

Reggie never had those problems when he was in Oakland. Finley and Williams respected him. Martin just did not.
Martin had a hard-on for Reggie because he didn't like his showy style. but Reggie never hurt his team and always played hard. he was flashy and had an ego but he was never a bad guy. i think Martin is the best manager ever, i think he could turn any team into a winner, but he was wrong about breaking Reggie's balls.
@@sportsrevisited9699 I agree. Reggie Jackson was one of those rare players who could make a ball team better with his appearance alone. His flair for dramatic clutch home runs didn't hurt either. But New York is a pressure cooker for professional sports, everyone knows that. It's always the "what have you done for me lately" fan attitude. That can affect the most thick skinned professional athlete.
NkrumahTure i have always said that in order to succeed you have to come to Ny young to get acclimated to the pressure. all the greats that have succeeded came while they were still young. Jeter, Mo, Clyde Fraizer, Willis Reed, Doc Gooden, Straw, etc. the only exceptions are Messier, Reggie, n Maris. Those who came in their prime has struggled or at the very least didnt win from Piazza, Mo Vaughn, Carmelo, etc.

Martin should not have gone out of his way to bust Jacksons' balls, but Reggie was unpopular with a lot of his teammates, on Yanks and when he was in Oakland. he struck out a lot also. so he did hurt team at times.
