I love your draw runner idea, simple and cost effective. I’m sure you’re already aware of this, but future makers, who make draws in a similar style to yours, rub a candle along the top of the wood baton which makes the draw run even smoother. 👍
This a really good tutorial, I feel confident in making my own drawers after watching this. 😃 Drawers are so much more practical than cabinets, especially in small spaces, or low down. 😊
TBH Mel, this is basic kitchen design, everything below waist height should be draws. In my professional converted van all low level cupboards, you end up on hands and knees to see what's in it. Considering changing to draws in the future
A little tip to make the drawers run smoother. Rub a candle along the runners so they have a thin coating of wax. That was a tip from my dad who started joinering in the 1940s before the fancy metal runners.
And this my friend is the casing point behind a self build, you can change if and when needed. You could do this to a coach built with such ease. Your Van is ever evolving to suit your own needs. Good stuff as always mate.
All you need to do now is build a tinned goods stacker on its side, so you just pull the can out the bottom and put it in the top until you have the product you want,
Simple and good! This is still the best. People usually always look too far, to be modern and hip with expensive accessories, while it can actually be very simple, see the old caravans and kitchens from the 1960s that were built with exactly the same idea, also that higher back wall as a stop, and the closing block at the bottom, I myself have also converted an old van into a camper van, and have applied this old idea with closing block for my pull-out bed, I have also made the back of the block wedge-shaped so that when it is closed it does not have to be lifted, and automatically falls into its lock, only when extending I have to lift it a bit, And for my kitchen unit I also kept it simple to keep it clear, so a large drawer at the top over the full width, and a large trap door also over the full width under that drawer, even though this looks like 2 small doors with 3 small sheaves, This is fake as a decoration but it's just a big trap door, I just do the division by putting some storage boxes in the to place the cabinet (See video last part 17:50m) ruclips.net/video/x5j2mLw3QG4/видео.html
I’ve had those Ferex drill bits Mel. The smaller size ones get their flutes jammed up with wood dust and is a mare to clean out. Also I’ve bent them in half which surprised me as decent bits will snap not bend.
You’re absolutely welcome I’m pleased to hear that my videos are helping someone so thank you once again for taking the time to comment really appreciated 🙏
Hi Mel, I have one big deep draw full of quite heavy cooking utensils and stuff ( retired Chef ) on wood tracks and it jammed up all the time even after rubbing soap on them, i fixed the draw with pure teflon strips i can now pull the draw out with my little finger. More efficient than expensive ball bearing runners by far.
There's so many priceless quotes and phrases in this video 😂 excellent work Mel, this has to be my favorite to-date. As usual, equal measures of informative & entertainment, and keeping it real. The soft touch drawer runners are weightybuggers, you need a jig to mount them properly, so old-school is better, cheaper and lighter. (My 1930s kitchen drawers work exactly the same way)
Love your simpler draw runner idea bud. ❤ I wish I thought of this when I rebuild my kitchen I didn’t put draws back because I lost so much space having the runners down the side. But seeing this I think il take your idea of draw runners and put draws back bud if that’s ok 😊 Great video always. Kitchen looks amazing 😊 I know how you feel after been living in mine I’ve decided to either cut my seat like yours or replace it with a single seat and open up the bottom of my bill head to allow me to get into the back better. The escape hatch is good but would benefit to open it up 😊 hope your keeping well 😊🚐
Top job! Mel, you are a genius when it comes to straightforward building. You have stopped me in my tracks, literally, as I was about to buy some drawer runners. I also love the block on the drawer bottom to stop it coming out when driving, simple and effective, thank you. Quick question, what thickness of ply have you used please?
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Excellent job. 😊 You made me laugh Mel. I went to Aldi the other day for fruit n vegetables & also bought a long sleeve hi viz t-shirt. 😄 ( ❤ Aldi)
Hi Mel great video , no wood filler ? what filler did you use , did you have to use hardener, and how long did it take Togo off well done good luck 👍🏴
We used similar "bog" on our joinery course- for custom wood that was to be painted, and proper woodfiller for timber furniture (although no cabinet maker would admit to that. The key phrases that'd anoy the tutor: "in glue and dust we put our trust" and, "if it's a dog, use the bog". Any remedial work done well is unnoticeable
OMG.... Thank you Mel for posting the ALLPOWERS Portable Power Station discount code, just ordered one, been looking for one for ages but not been able to afford the higher priced units, full steam ahead now WHOOP WHOOP !!!

#waffleonawednesday Hi Mel, love the galley and something I'd like to attempt to replicate in my van. Just a couple of questions are they built using the pocket hole method? and did you only use glue on the draws is there nothing else holding them together? Many thanks in advance Pete
Is that ply 9mm Mel? Drawers are definitely the future for lower cabinets. Got a pan drawer at home and it’s really handy, if I was gonna make a kitchen I would only use drawers for under the work top
Mel, background music incredibly and continually annoying, please don't put this in. You hav'nt put this in before. Good video, as usual, but please no stupid irritating background music any more.

Thanks for the great tip I’ll definitely have a go at that 👍
This a really good tutorial, I feel confident in making my own drawers after watching this. 😃

Glad it was helpful!
I like the way the drawers are made and the way they operate. That stop to prevent them coming all the way out is clever too !
Thank you 🙏
When you put your air fryer away first put it in a plastic carrier bag so you then have handles to lift it out
That’s a brilliant idea 👍
"Red and green shit.. " lol, good work Mel.
Excellent video. I need to convert my cupboards into drawers, and your video proves it.
Go for it!👍🤓👍
"Red and green shit" 😂. Drawers look great 👍
Thank you ☺️
Mel,a good way of holding things together is a brad nailor
Fresh product, or "red and green shit, stuff like that" - haha love it :)

Love the "lip" lock 🎉
Nice one mate!

Thank you 🙏
I was going to suggest this too. Also a tip from my dad
You can also rub a candle on a wood saw to stop it snagging .
And this my friend is the casing point behind a self build, you can change if and when needed. You could do this to a coach built with such ease. Your Van is ever evolving to suit your own needs. Good stuff as always mate.
Absolutely correct my friend 👍🤓👍
Nice design ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Clever idea for stopping the drawers from coming out, simple but effective
Thank you 🙏
Brilliant looks great
I was planning to replace one of my cupboards, but will probably just put them inside the door, to keep the outside less complicated.
Hi Mell an old tip is to take a candle and rub the wooden guides with the candle. This lubricates the wood and the drawers will open even smoother.
Great idea!!
i love how you show the real struggles, keeping it real
Thank you ☺️
Goodo mate ..comeup a real treat.. and remember.. look after ya lungkts ..😍😎😁pip pips n carryon pilgrims

👍 idea, I think I convert to drawers too. Makes use of the space more economical.
Yes it does!

I’ve broken 3 of them already lol 😂
Great idea, will be upgrading my kitchen drawers now. Brilliant thanks Mel
You’re welcome 😊
Looks good.

Nice job there - new subscriber here, and a fellow campervan enthusiast!
Awesome! Thank you!👍🤓👍

Good job Mel 😊👍
Thank you 😁
Great video Mel, have you ever thought of putting an edge protector on the edge of the kitchen? L shaped plastic trim.
That's a great idea!
Almost as good as my drawers Mel 😂
No comparison 😂🤣😂👍

Great vid Mel! Keeping it simple makes it simple to reconfigure ! Simples!😂
Keep up the good work!👍👍👍
Thanks, will do! And thank you for your support 👍🤓👍
I had no idea you could just glue a drawer together. Are you confident they will last?
They are extremely strong I made the others the same way they have lasted for over 3 years now 👍🤓👍
Nicely done Mel. great design for a drawer. cracking bit of refurbishment. Bessy regs-Kenny

Is the Plywood for the draw 6mm
What are you using on the bottom of the drawers to prevent opening?
Hi Mel
Can i please ask the depth or you kitchen bench. I think i made mine too deep, leaving a skinny walkway and no room for long deep draws
red and green shit lol. love your vids
Thank you ☺️
Is your freezer temperamental one I fitted seems to be allready fitted large gauge wire but still seems iffy
I’ve never had a problem yet
Hi Mel, great vid. Just a quick question, do you use metric or whitworth measurements when building the draw units?
Thought whitworth was an old screw thread measurement 🤔. Do you mean imperial ?
Oh it’s definitely whitworth as I have a screw or two loose 😂😂👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld LOL, great idea to have drawers instead of cupboards. I have made a note for when I do a build.
Do you craft these type of units for others..I'm useless with wood work..
I'd definitely buy the complete unit same size un painted...
No work top lol 😉😉
Not at the moment but I’m sure thinking about it what would you consider a reasonable price for something like this 👍
