As a neurodivergent individual who has gone down the rabbit hole of myths and mythological folk lore, fairy circles are usually traps for humans where fairies feed on the humans souls while forcing them to dance forever. Trees that have open arches that you can walk through are considered doors to other worlds. They aren’t particularly traps in general but on some occasions they can be considered portals to hell and or traps to feed on unsuspecting animals/humans, only on some occasions though. Also, incase you didn’t know, fairies are not just little people with wings who take care of nature. In actual folk lore they are considered to bring death and they usually feed off of souls and flesh. They’re little annoying shits

I have been interested in these types of things since ive seen spiderwick chronicles and honestly I'm glad to say that watching that movie has kind of allowed me to realize that some of the stuff I had seen in my past years haven't really given me a clear answer on what caused them and had lead me to research alot of these fae folk and other folk lore creatures that could potentially be real but we as humans don't really allow ourselves to realize that maybe there are things in our world that we don't know exist because we choose to not believe are in fact potentially real. For example we have not have fully explored much or if at all a lot of the oceans on earth or even really been able to research much of space so who is to truly say that some of these things aren't real.

Okay, added context to the Fae Traps thing. Fae are specifically celtic in origin (mostly Irish), and its mostly superstition to never EVER EVER mess with them. Being transported to the otherworld is less like narnia and more like a parallel dimension. But the more common belief is that Fae mess with us, they give bad luck, they trick you into making deals with them, sometimes if you find a random trinket that really has no business being where you found it, odds are its a fair folk tempting you into a deal and if you accept it you are accepting the deal, and allowing them into your life and they bring bad luck through that. Another belief, which stems from that last one, is that we never move things that they have set up. Fairy rings, trees or mounds associated with them, etc. In fact, here in Ireland there was a tree or a mound that was in the way of a road that was being constructed, and I think it was the government themselves that agreed, instead of cutting down the tree or removing the mound, to make the road go around it. That's how deep-seeded this is in our culture. It's a Pagan belief, but it was so important that it stuck around even after we converted to Christianity and had most of our stories rewritten by Christians. This shit is just stuff that we grow up knowing. It's kind of like the equivalent of you saying to not mess with Oujia boards or something like that. Im not sure what the Mexican equivalent would be that's of equal importance, but there ya go lol
Note: fae aren't all malevolent by any means, its just the power they're believed to have over us is dangerous.
It's a shame that faerie lore is so underappreciated by pop culture, especially since it so frequently uses the aesthetic while stripping the identity.
Anyway, I think el duende, la llorona and coco would be good analogues for sidhe. Stories that every child from the region has heard, that are sort of nebulously malicious or unintentionally harmful entities that come for children who wander off or aren't in bed before dark.
@thalmorjusticiar1 I 100% agree. It genuinely frustrates me to no end when I see pop culture use the concept of the fae, then reduce them to "scary monster" or "pretty miniature person with wings." Those tiktok videos are also guilty of it, which sucks because it means Eddie's first impression of this genuinely terrifying but fascinating cultural belief was the watered down quirkified version.

My kids and I used to take long walks in the woods behind my house when they were small. They loved looking for animals like squirrels, turkeys and we even found a fawn (baby deer) once. I always made sure they knew to look from a distance and not get too close. My younger daughter always used to say that those woods were a perfect place for fairies to live. My older daughter and I made a fairy house in a hole at the bottom of a tree for my younger daughter when she was way, way younger. We spent two weeks making tiny little miniature furniture pieces (chairs, table, bed and bed table). I found a flicker lamp in a craft store that ran off of one of those little itsy bitsy watch batteries and put it inside, on the bedside table. I cut a small hole next to the doorway hole and glued some curtains on the inside. My daughter made a pathway from some old colored glass fish tank gravel. Neither of us had the heart to tell her that we made it until she was old enough to figure it out on her own. It's actually one of her fondest memories from when she was little.

And by extension, someone not in the know, who wants to believe, can be easily convinced that such structures are supernatural. Also it's a nice story.

The fay thing is an old myth. That's probably there to explain why you should never leave a path to follow something interesting. You will get lost. And if you have ever walked into the woods as the sun is setting you will realise how quickly the light disappears. And how f'ed up the trees start to look without a tent or large light source.
Even a small over grown forest will start seeming wrong and larger as soon as you let yourself get distracted and follow the 'traps'.
People don't willingly live in the woods. People live beside rivers and fields. And always clear out a portion of trees in an effort to feel safe in the woods.
That's why I like it. It's not true. No magic. But as a person with a phone and wanderlust, I realise why compasses and lights are so important as I walk though every chain of 'trap' like features. Following illusionary paths that I pick out from the roots, bogs and waterfalls.

It's "fae", not fay. The Fae folk are from celtic mythology, however not much is written down since celtic culture rarely contained written works. It was mostly verbal stories passed down from people, whether or not they're real is not up to you. Clearly you don't understand it anyway, and neither does tiktok. It's quite disrespectful to completely disregard a piece of culture, it's also not "magic" so don't try to bring that up. The "otherworld" is just that, modern science already accepts the existence of other dimensions so how is this different? Just because you don't believe it? This is nothing to do with the tiktok videos either, if you're to claim others don't understand the world what gives you the authority to decide that?
I've also stomped two of those "fae/faery/faiy/whatever" rings and nothing's fucking happened that wasn't explainable by basic human logic.

Have you thought that maybe the aggressive insistence of there only being one name will start effecting how a myth is verbally spoken to the next generation.
One of the great attributes of a myth is it's seemingly unknowable origin and how universal it can get without major changes to what makes the story.
So there's nothing wrong with me spelling fay and the many other interpretation of the myth. Including my personal take of the myth that even appeals even to the sceptical.

But magic refers to supernatural abilities. And the fay are a kind of supernatural spirit. They are made of magic and use it so I'm not sure what's so offensive.

hey im someone who studies fae lore and a fae trap is a thing to trap humans but when a human is stuck in one, one of three things can happen:
1. you get sent back and it is hundreds of years have passed
2. you live almost a full like with the fae and are sent back to the exact moment you where taken
3. you partake in something the fae offers you most the time food or drink and if you except you are just forever part of that world even if you get sent back.
I believe there is one story where someone is sent back after maybe 200 years and when they come back they just age and turn to dust very rapidly. So yeah fae things are kind of a trend as of recently and I love it. also faerie rings would either trap you by putting you in a deep sleep or make you dance till you died. then there is the norse story of if you dance with elves you will dance for so long that many years will pass without you knowing. its all pretty cool if you really dig into it.
