Build an entire city using containers. Also install a huge electric measure (pyramid) in the center so it will power the entire city for free. These innovative constructions are great!
1/ Thank you for your interest in my container housing designs. Since you have been doing the actual container building, you are one of the few in the world who would appreciate value when you saw it. Most people would stand by and wait for someone else to take the risk first, but I see you in the video, I can see you are the person who would do big thing, not just talk about it. Besides, Haiti needs housing very urgently. I believe container is the answer because it only cost $2000 a piece.
Several years ago, I tried to build container housing for Haiti through Architecture for Humanity. But they had fixed idea of what they wanted for Haiti. My ideas was discorded by them completely ! But I am a stubborn person,I don't usually give up when I discovered a good idea. So I kept on doing what I believe in what the cheap $2,000 container could change the construction of housing and school etc. George Wu, AIA 2012-11-10
This is interesting and very advantageous to 3rd world countries such as here in the Philippines... Houses and lots are quite expensive nowadays and small in area size... I hope I can have one of this stuff...

Hillside homes are very good on energy. The cabine I will be building next summer in Arkansas will consist of two 48ft containers almost completely buried, just leaving the front (actually back of container) exposed for an entrance. With the soil covering the sides and roof once I lock up the two heavy doors it should be safe from vandels. It's just going to be a hunting cabine so it won;t be luxurious but will have the bare basics and sleep about 8.
This is an example of on sight construction . I have a much better idea of shipping containers. Once shipped , being shipped , set down and made ready and be able to live in , in just a few hours .Using the outside walls to double the size , of one container .Where there isn't any heavy equipment . Out riggers , lift them off the truck . Lower them and putting columns under them before removing the out riggers .No one is coming close to how I would design them .
I have the same concern as Jimbo Jitsu. I am not in the construction trade but I have seen many other videos on this subject and they all pretty much agree that you can only remove between 10 to 20 feet from a 40 foot shipping container wall without compromising the integrity of the container, after that additional roof support is needed. Does yours work because you have the other 2 containers pressed and welded up against each side and thus providing the needed support?
Have you looked into Insulating concrete (the kind of 'concrete' that is mostly air) like Aircrete? there are several videos on RUclips showing how they spray in the insulating concrete. It has the consistency of shaving creme until it dries.
@Biofado I think he is referring to "bog" or Bondo Putty (see wikipedia). A putty that is commonly used by car panel beaters to fill holes and make shape. Drill small holes to help the putty take a strong bond.
Soil is a poor insulator per inch especially when wet. It can act as a thermal mass but you will still need insulation, plus you would need additional structural reinforcement. But agreed that fiberglass is a poor choice for container homes, especially if you compress it to try and save space inside as the r factor drops to nothing.
I think he should have checked around for different size containers. My 20ft that I use for storage is only 7'6" wide but the 48ft container I am about to buy for a hunting cabine is 8'6" wide and 9'6" tall. The length is not what decides the width but instead it's the manufacturer. I plan on burying two of them side by side leaving the fronts exposed for an entrance. Once I lock the two heavy doors it should be pretty secure from vandles.
Seems to me that a rooftop garden or even just dirt would insulate better and keep the sun from heating the roof - no toxic fiberglass needed and keep the interior roof higher.
What is this "body field" stuff? I tried searching for it on the net and couldn't find any info about it. I'm from the US so this maybe some sort of product that we don't have.
Refer to his comment on 20' n 40'. There's mistake on ISO shipping container specification. Whether container is 20' or 40' or 45' or 48' the width is 8'. It's following ISO guideline and this is minimum road width requirement worldwide. As for the length, it speak for itself. 20' is 20 foot in length, 40' is 40 foot in length, 45' is 45 foot in length and 48' is 48 foot in length. As for the height, containers under GP or General Purpose height is 8'6" whether it is 20' or 40'. As those containers categorised under HC or High Cube, height is 9'6". Additional 1' as compare to GP containers. So far 45' that I came across are all 9'6" in height. As for 48' I don't handle them before. But from most sites I came across, they indicated as 9'6".
You are correct Eddie. (9ft 6in high containers are often referred to as High Cube HC). Over-width pallet wide 2.5m or 2,525m wide containers are common in Europe,
I have concerns that by removing so much metal you are degrading the intregity of the structure. Otherwise how much does it cost to build 1 module in haiti? I am working on a project that could use these and I would like to include it in the budget. thanks!
the only issue I have with this is he does not mention the common practice of the floor being impregnated with a chemical to deter insects and other pests. I have seen other videos where they pressure washed the floor and then encapsulated it in epoxy to keep it from outgassing.
Single houses are for the birds; we need multiple housing for a lot of people, not just a few people ! Therefore, I do not design single residence any more. Single residences are for the people who were born before the year of 2000 ! George Wu, AIA 2012-11-10
The only problem I see is you can't have a flat roof on the container because water is very heavy and will cause ponding on the roof of the container and over time will cause it to fail. Another issue is you have to heavily insulate the roof of that is basically an oven for humans because of the nature of steel reaction to the Sun.
"body field could be body filler in the field that needs to be filled. insulation is to keep heat out from sun heated metal on roof. one said some containers have toxic paint , and rubber seals from insectiside.
If Bill and Hillary keep the 80 million for themselves. He appeared to be dying soon. He cannot bring the money with him so let Hillary and her girl friend spend the money. Meanwhile I can give you the floor plans and wall sections to build 40 story container housing so the next yearly hurricane cannot knock them down. Facebook / George Wu 2019-5-17
"Another issue is you have to heavily insulate the roof of that is basically an oven for humans because of the nature of steel reaction to the Sun." ISO housing has been common worldwide for many years. I painted my shop container roof white which dropped the internal temp considerably. Water isn't heavy enough to deform ISO roofs, and roof coatings are easy to apply. I just climb a ladder every few years and inspect mine, then recoat if necessary. Much less maintenance than a shingled roof. I've worked in ISOs in Desert Storm. Not bad at all.
If you go to the web site open architeure george wu, aia, you will see that I have been trying to use 4 containers @$2,000 each to house 44( forty four) people of two families, with 2-full bathrooms , 2 full kichens , 2 living-dining rooms, 2 Japanese gardens, etc. The official will spend about @1,000 per person to relocate the tents now being evicted by the land owners in Haiti. You need an architect like me to give you the best use of containers. Georg Wu, AIA 2012-1-19
Yu Ke I love the video so much. A product I also found helpfull for building shipping container home is Corbandy Container Crusher- know more search it on google
+Yu Ke If anyone is interested in container home plans the best results that i've ever had was by following the Magic Container Plans (i found it on google) without a doubt the best info i've tried.
All I saw were people cutting containers, didn't see one really put to use. Cutting holes in a container and saying that all you need is the windows, door, electricity and computers, chairs tables is a joke.
Have you heard the talk about - "Shuzman Awesome Container Homes" (google it)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 built a great shipping container home with it.
Looks great! Well done. We should pray for the one person who doesn't like this video.

Beautiful container cutting and foundations. Thanks for making this avilable to al container enthusiasts. Now you have an earthquake proof structure.

nice video
Nice job. How do you seal above of the windows?
Atleast these are earthqwake proof i want to build these soon to for a house and a shed to park my cars.
Excellent Idea
Its a wonderful project

@heyPukeBoy Thanks for your response. I figured as much. I also supose that state building codes also play a part in it as well.

all containers are 8 feet wide to fit on the back of the trucks, Some are 20 feet up to a maximum of 40 feet. Some are 9 feet 6 high, some are less.
What do you use to seal trhe container? "Body field"? what is it? Thanks from POrtugal, Paulo
fondation is ciment
What is "Body field"? What do you mean? I didn´t get it, sorry.

And if you bolt it to buried concrete foundations even better in HURRICAINS.. with metal window storm fixtures

brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!
what do you mean body field to seal the container ? can anyone brief. Material and method to seal two containers
Thanks in advance
Would be very interested in seeing those plans Mr. Wu. Get in touch with me, please.
I like this idea

Isn't it difficult to cut?
Amazing :)
He used "body fill" as in car body fender filling compound to fill the gaps he might want to close.

some word s I don't understand:
what is "body shield"?
I think it is something akin to bondo -- body filler from car repair field.
oh.
Does anybody know for sure?
Insulation
nice thanks info

Pretty sure the water weight is nothing for a container built to be stacked several stories high
