I've been making these with my aunts and my mother for 45 years...learned how to use a paring knife and devein the leaves...it was my responsibility to do that first, and learn how to tell when the leaves were just right coming out of the water. We used to roll hundreds of these for wedding receptions, baby showers, first communions, Easter, Christmas. I've never seen the cone roll shape...makes perfect sense! Am going to incorporate that into mine! Thanks Natasha! You taught an old dog a new trick!
This is actually a really authentic technique with a really authentic recipe .... so happy to see this online! So many people try to take a shortcut approach to this
You brought so many good memories to me. Every slavic person will almost feel taste of these cabbage rolls just by watching it. Thank you for good recipe. I love watching you!!!
Natasha Natasha yes, I spent my childhood around Europe and I remember eating cabbage stuffed rolls in many countries, probably the best ones in Poland . But it’s also a very popular dish in the Balkans and in Turkey.
I almost cried watching this, remebering the cabbage rolls my Grandma used to make. I always meant to get her recipe, but never got the chance, this is almost exactly how my Grandma used to make them (she used a tomato purè with fresh tomatoes and spices), definitely going to use this recipe to introduce my family to the great Slavic cuisine (Borscht, Pierogi and Cabbage Rolls). Thank you for the recipe!
My mother had invented two delicious recipes, one for ratatouille and the other for head cheese. As in your case, I never got the recipes from her. They were unique to her. She also made excellent cabbage rolls. I have never tried to make these myself. Thank goodness for this recipe by Natasha.
It looks great! I am Hungarian, and I make almost the same mixture, but I add chopped raw onions to the minced meat instead of carrots or at least additional to carrots...and it never hurts to add some smoked bacon to it either, it gives a special flavour to this dish! I also add some thyme and dill and maybe a bit of tomato sauce. We call it stuffed cabbage=toltott káposzta.
So Romania has the best version? Why not Hungary or Turkey or Poland or Ukraine or Russia or the Baltic or the Balkan regions? They all have the best version, as well as the best music, the best wine and of course the best women, obviously! Haaaaaaaa! xD
Natasha, you are my “Go To” recipe Queen. This is my third recipe of yours this week! I’ve got new tips on stuffed cabbage rolls from you! Thank you very much, regards Dave! 👍👍🇬🇧
I have made these all my life. Since my childhood, spent in Babcia's kitchen, I have not seen the method of making these in a cone shape. That's a nice way to make smaller portions so people can have more room on their plates for kielbasa, pierogi and a nice piece of dark rye bread! I'm going to make them like this today. Thanks for the lesson and good luck with your videos.
I'm Romanian, but our cabbage rolls are called Sarmale. We like to use turkey meat instead of pork, it's much healthier and tastes so much better! You should try it sometime :) We don't put carrots, either! We cook onion, turkey bacon, and season it with salt, pepper, paprika, and add fresh thyme and dill. Thyme makes it tastes so amazing, and gives it that traditional flavor that we love. After that's cooked, we add the rice and ground turkey. We cook the cabbage pretty much the same, or soured cabbage. Then we fold them, and put them in a large pan (because they are too good and we make a bunch so we don't run out fast!) After the pot is nearly full, we put a smoked pork and smoked sausage leg in between for extra flavor. Let it simmer for about 3-4 hours. We then add in tomato sauce and let it simmer when the Sarmale are nearly finished for about half an hour. And that's it! Would love for you to try it the Romanian way :)
This is a delicious recipe, thank you. I’ve had cabbage rolls many times in Lithuania and also tried making them myself but this was way better. Marinara sauce made a huge difference. I also added some spices into the stuffing mix and served this with some mash. Amazing! P.S. Keep in mind though this takes ages to make, not a weeknight meal if you’re looking for one!
I love cabbage rolls, and I'm not picky about them at all. They all taste amazing to me. I eat them with sour cream and stuffed bell peppers as well. It helps cut the acidity.
so many versions of this recipe but this is the first I've seen with no onion, salt, pepper or garlic. I will give it a try because I was looking for one with NO salt & I will make another batch with onions, garlic & pepper. Looks good...
thank you Natasha very much. I just watched quite a few videos on the same subject and yours nailed it. I am from Ukraine and I know just like you what galushki should taste like. that's exactly the traditional way through cook them. you got yourself a subscriber. Keep it up dear.
This is one of my all time favorite foods. No one makes it the same, and every time I make it I switch it up. I grew up in a polish area, but forget the markets, just mention it to a friends mom and the next day that friend will bring you a massive tray! Its like a badge of honor. I see you make yours in more of a Russian style, no onions or rice, but it still looks awesome!
On the contrary they cook with onion, carrot ,rice ect. sometimes a bit of cheese in the filling in Ukraine/ Russia...Now it's popular to add some buckwheat or cous cous instead of rice into the mince due to more healthier version it is still very tasty!😋 Natasha doesn't use traditional Ukrainian recipes for some reason..Probably adopt them ..
My grandmother used to make stuffed cabbage, even though we are Italian, and sometimes I used to help her in the kitchen, but I couldn't remember how to soften the cabbage so I never made it, but after seeing this video I'm definitely going to make this. I also like that you added some marinara to the filling. My grandmother never did that. Thanks Natasha.
I saute onions til soft in butter, then add my rice and get all mixed. Cool a little then add to rice mixture. Just giving another dimension. Thankyou.
Yum голубцы they are so good I actually made them recently and I also use a tomato sauce similar to yours and a tip for a faster cooking time is too to have them in the pot and and add enough water so they are fully submerged and put them on the stove and boil them and they only take 40 minutes and after they have cooked for about 25 to 30 minutes add the sauce the acidity in the tomatoes stops the cabbage from even further so only add the sauce when the cabbage is cooked to the perfect texture
It just reminds me my childhood and grandma. She used to make this on weekends and whenever there were more people at home. So much memories 😊 but here it is without carrots and sour cream but a homemade tomato sauce we call it "charuto". I'm from Brazil but she worked at an arabic family house most of her youth
I tried a good stuff cabbage years ago and I can honestly say I haven't had one since. I tried making them and even though my kids liked them, I still didn't make them right. I'm glad I am watching tutorials on how to make them.
I made these!! Came out sooo good!!! Thank you. I have made your chicken pot pie and your broccoli sesame chicken. Both have been made several times!! My family and friends love it. I appreciate how simple you make the cooking process and I love your positive attitude keep up the good work! I was hoping that you would consider making a corned beef and cabbage one!
I really like the way you rolled up the cabbage rolls, Made alot of these when i was a kid with my mom. NOt much when older because was sick of making cabbage rolls for ten people at a time; that's alot of cabbage rolls.
I surprised my daughter Natasha with this today and they gave me 5 stars. I did not use the egg and used fresh tomatoes for the sauce. I for the life of me could not roll these like you did and had to use cooking string. Our family really enjoyed this and thanks from all of us!
