You listed it perfectly! Respect! It was 1984. Let me just add that these campaigns continued. And that I am very happy and proud to have been to a Live Aid concert in 1985. An event that marks you for a lifetime.
What's sad is a few aren't with us anymore.
I think the single vinyl record bought in Xmas 1984 is still in my dad's house. It listed all the artists on the back.

@@_CliveyExactly! This was spontaneously recorded in one day in late November and released early December 1984. We Are The World was recorded in January and released in March 1985. Americans kind of jumped on the bandwagon here, after Band Aid sold almost 2 million copies within something like 2 weeks, as did many other bands around the world, but it was for a good cause so that’s okay. I remember people buying the record either in bulk to give away or they would return it to the record store directly after paying at the cash register to be sold again to raise more money. At the time it was the highest selling Christmas song ever, for a while even topping Bing Crosby’s White Christmas.
@@_CliveyWhat are you talking about? I was a teenager when this came out, and I don't remember anyone thinking we were first. For that matter, everyone I knew preferred this to USA for Africa's shmaltzy song.

This was the original version of Do They Know it’s Xmas which then led to Live Aid concerts in 1985 and inspired the USA charity single We are the World
“We are the world”, and “Do they know it’s Christmas” are both written for worthy causes. But musically I have always preferred “Do they know it’s Christmas”.

"Band-Aid" was just the made-up name for a collection of British artists.
This was recorded before and inspired the creation of "We Are the World". Both were charitable records designed to help with famine relief in Africa.
Many people have forgotten, that "Live Aid" was a continuation of what began with this song.
There is also a metal version that was a charitable aid song called We're Stars by Hear N Aid
Irish artist's played and sang in this track also including Bob geldof and bono !
And a Canadian version the band was called Northern Lights the song is Tears are not Enough

This was Christmas 1984, Wham (George Michael) donated the proceeds of Last Christmas to the famine relief too. ❤

This was the start of it all...Band Aid's Christmas single in the UK released in Dec 1984, then inspired the US to do USA for Africa, followed in March 1985 & then the Live Aid concerts in July 1985.

Meanwhile Canada decided to feed the world with an ensemble group called Northern Lights singing Tears Are Not Enough. That group has Bryan Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, and other prominent Canadian artists.
West Germany also fed the world with an ensemble groups called Band für Afrika. Their song was called Nackt in dem Wind. That groups features Nena.
@@abinashmishra329I didn’t know the Canadian song, but I do know Band für Afrika. The Live Aid concert was televised around the world and went practically the whole day while for days there were events taking place everywhere to raise money. Why isn’t that possible today anymore?

He even had to get his own Brandy at the next door pub because Bob was still pissed off he'd missed the morning session.

The performers weren't picked for their voices. They we're the most popular recording artists in the UK at the time. They blend so well together because, in most cases, they were/are excellent singers and musicians.
It occurs to me, because you didn’t go “OMG” when Sting and Bono appeared, you may need to check out The Police and U2. Happy Holidays!

I am 54 and lived this song in real time in 1984 as a 15 year Old High School Sophomore! I am so glad you kids are discovering the cool music from back in my Eighties Day ha ha! Every performer was British Rock and New Wave Royalty! Thank you for your awesome comments!

Paul Young is the first person to sing. He had a huge hit with "Every Time You Go Away". Fantastic voice.
Paul Young was phenomenal here. And I still have a couple of his albums, an absolutely amazing performer to see live as well.

The singers in order are Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Phil Collins on drums, Simon Lebon (from Duran Duran), Sting (from The Police), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet),and Bono From the greatest rock band of the 1980's: U2). In 1984 the rains had failed in Ethiopia for the third year in a row and thus there was a famine unlike the world had seen in modern times. Band Aid tried to put a "band aid" on the problem by raising money to buy food to alleviate the famine. USA for Africa soon followed a couple of months later. By the spring there was "Live Aid"( both in the US and in the UK) a live concert which featured many of the artists from both Band Aid and USA for Africa plus many more including QUEEN! It is considered by many to be the greatest concert of all time.

The first guy you said you didn't recognize is Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran. Another 80's staple you need to dive into, "Rio", "Hungry Like The Wolf" are just a few. This was a roomful of the most successful and talented at the time (1984). I remember it well. Back when MTV was really Music Television.
What's funny, is that there are several artist they have reacted to already, but still didn't recognize them. They've done 2 Duran Duran as well as one Paul Young and Spandu Ballet, but didn't recognize them.

I always thought Boy George is weird. The thing is his voice is just freaking great! He sings so soulfully. I often wonder if he knows he wears Carey Price's sleeves when he is on "The Voice"?

The Boomtown Rats are a seriously underrated band
The album of this song is still one of the best selling albums ever in music history. A time when Duran Duran, Culture Club and Spandau Ballet ruled the entire world! This pre-dated We Are the World. In fact, We Are the World came about because of Band Aid. Bob Geldof of Band Aid was also behind the global Live Aid concert.
To me, I can't get in the Christmas spirit until I hear this song. So many memories from back in the day. This came out right before USA for Africa.
There's Sting, Bono from U2, Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, Midge Ure, Bananarama, Paul Weller... Bob Geldof started this all off (yes even the American version) because he was impelled by the starving African people. Good job Sir Bob👏👏👏👏👏

This was a supergroup composed of more than 30 of the most popular British music acts of the time. Frontman of the Irish band The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof wrote the song in 1984 inspired by the political unrest and famine in Ethiopia. Six months later he organized the Live-Aid worldwide concert.

My son was 4 years old when this song came out. To this day, I get the chills (in a good way) and tears in my eyes from the moment the drums begin. Egos were checked out the door. The best of the best gathered to share their talents for charity.
For me it’s when the first chime is heard.
This song was written my Midge Ure, a legendary Scottish singer songwriter who, along with Bob Geldoff of Boomtown Rats, founded Live Aid. Midge Ure was the lead singer of Ultravox and still tours regularly as a solo act . He plays Milwaukee often and I have met him many times. He is a wonderful man, humanitarian and philanthropist.
The Professor of Rock has a great interview on his channel with Midge talking about how quickly they put the song and recording together.

I remember when this song came out in 1984 and all of a sudden "Christmas" had a different meaning. Incredible song that has stood the test of time.

I wonder if you're old enough to remember that terrible famine in Ethiopia? It shocked the world when pictures and film footage came out, finally, showing the absolute horror of the situation. People like living skeletons, almost too weak to move, babies dropping dead off their mothers' empty breasts. Thousands of people, adults, elders and little children, dying there in the dust with no-one to care, no-one to help. This hastily written song by a hastily assembled group of musos in relatively wealthy and not-starving Britain, was just an attempt by people who cared enough to try to keep public awareness on those fellow human beings' desperate plight, instead of just forgetting about it again, and to raise money as quickly as possible to help them. The song may not have been perfect, but it came straight from the heart, and it did the job. Soon after that, Bob Geldof, one of the organisers, put together the Live Aid concert that went out all over the world.

To this day I can't hear this beautiful song without crying. Bob Geldof, the creator of this project, managed a huge mobilization against hunger in Ethiopia. Why can't humans be sensitized to it anymore? The song is fuller than the Christmas spirit should actually be.

Unfortunately, the food that was donated to Ethiopia with the proceeds from this song, was stolen by the rebels, and none got to those who were starving. This has happened too many times in the past. It breaks my heart! I think that that is the reason (or, at least, part of it) of why there are not more of these collaborations done today. The monies raised never get to those to whom it was intended. It has made people so cynical. This happened with the first effort: Concert for Bangladesh, by George Harrison, and on to We Are the World, Live Aid, Farm Aid, etc. So sad that there are greedy, or immoral people in this world. I think it is best to give directly to someone who is hurting, or struggling, or in hardship...personally....no middleman, government, management, etc. to mess things up.
There is only so much you can do for someone until there comes a time they have to get up off their backsides and do it for themselves. Africa is a great big pit that has had endless aid poured into, and still they beg for more. They have been taught to fish, so they have to go do it, or suffer the consequences.
The 80's were an amazing time, when people actually cared about others. All of the wonderful artists that came together to help the world come together as one. From Do They Know it Christmas, We are the World, to Live AID. These set in motion numerous other charity events such as Farm AID, The Prince's Trust Rock Gala, The Wall live in Berlin and so many more.
Umm, people were just as selfish and mad for war and disdainful of those who were different, poor and so on. It's nice Band Aid came together and Live Aid but let's not get carried away. In fact, millions of dollars raised during Live Aid never made it to Ethiopia and food rotted on the docks due to blockades. I was a teenager and I remember. along with my friends being afraid of going to war with the U.S.S.R. and the constant ratcheting up of nuclear tensions. In America, Reaganomics was designed to destroy the social safety net while Reagen refused to put money in the budget to help aids research. There were hostages being taken left and right throughout the decade. Britain was, if you weren't well off, rife with unemployment for blue collar workers as Thatcher, The Iron Lady, plied her own form of discriminations and trickle-down economics. Racism and bigotry roiled Europe and the U.S. It was just as bad as now,

Exactly. This one came first. Neither them were 'supergroups'. Just musicians and singers that volunteered their time to get together and do this for Africa's people.
I was surprised you didn’t recognize Paul Young in the beginning. You reacted to his video of “Everytime you go away” recently. The other guy you didn’t recognize was Simon Le Bon from the group Duran Duran. There is also U2, and girl group Bananarama, Boy George with his band members from Culture Club. There was also an appearance from Tony Hadley of Spandau ballet.
I wonder too if artists not wearing make up and short screen time didn't help them recognize them too. When Amber saw Simon, she he had crunched face like she recognized him.
@@piper998877 Even at the time I noted that the British artists were not wearing makeup. It gave the impression that the cause was more important that the artist's vanity. Not the case the following year with We Are The World.
This song inspired We Are The World. Bob Geldof was instrumental with taking this movement on to LiveAid '85. The concert in Wembley includes the 21 minutes of that Queen set which has become so legendary. All ur subscribers r looking forward to ur reaction to that one fer sure.

Ah, 1984! I was a young sprout of 20 years-old, still wet behind the ears. And Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" still gives me chills.👽❤🌍🎄
The star power in this was incredible and remains my favorite Xmas song ever done and it is hauntingly beautiful and depressing. Later the two top Aces who were unable to be at filming Freddie Mercury (Queen) and David Bowie would do this on stage together but they were absent when the video was to be done and shot. That being said they still had G Michaels, Bono, Phil Collins, Duran Duran, and so many more British amazing artists.

It's not that they "picked" artists with a similar tone, it's that the artist are so good/professional that they know how to adjust their voice/tone to fit in. Just my opinion. I do love your reactions, and your musical choices. Proud to have gone through 80's music at the right age, (14 in 1980) but my heart still belongs to 70's rock.Cheers from canada.

The artists were selected by Bob Geldof and he basically selected artists who were very big at the time and who were willing to drop everything to do the song within 48 hours. There was absolutely no thought to who sounds best with who. Absolutely not even a consideration. As you said, these are professionals. And they know how to harmonize with each other.
Band Aid came about as a reaction Bob Geldof had to a report he saw of rampant starvation in Africa. Bob Geldof was also the driving force behind Live Aid. The stories surrounding both events are crazy and heart-warming. 💕
Midge Ure has a huge part of band aid and writing the song but didn’t get same credit as mouth piece bob geldof.

@@Sleepwalk60. Bob Geldof was the person that started the whole thing, he had asked Midge Ure from Ultravox and other famous singers to do something for the hunger in Ethiopia.
Then both Bob and Midge got together and both wrote the lyrics for Do They Know Its Christmas.
Bob Geldof had pushed it hard to get something done, and thankfully for him, it was a success.
Band Aid's Do They Know it's Christmas actually inspired the We Are the World song.
There are several in this group you wouldn't know (yet) but many you do or should...Duran Duran, Sting, Phil Collins, Boy George and Culture Club, George Michael, Kool and the Gang, Spandau Ballet, Bono and a whole list of new artists yet to discover.
This is the original EPIC charity song. It spawned Live Aid - the global mega concert event held in London and in the U.S. (Philadelphia) simultaneously. I was a college kid at the time and was lucky enough to go to the Philly show and it was monumental. Wish you guys would have honed in on the lyrics and commented on them because they are powerful and sad. If you didn’t know what all those 80s UK musical artists were joined in the studio for, it was for famine relief. There was a brutal drought which brought famine and starvation to Africa in the 80s and Bob Geldof along with Midge Ure decided to take action to help the people of the drought and famine stricken region, hence the full title of the song “(Feed The World) Do They Know It’s Christmas”. There is an excellent longer version of the video which is a documentary about the whole project but mainly focuses on the actual day the video was shot and the logistics of working out all the schedules of the artists. Plus, there is some excellent footage shot in the studio the day the song was recorded and there are some great interviews with the artists. The Boy George comments about George Michael are priceless!

Nice to hear that but I remember watching the entire UK side on telly, and as much of the US side as I could before I was utterly knackered and forced up to bed. But next day and for ages and ages afterwards it was all the buzz. Over the next year, I met several people who went down to London to be there, and every single one of them utterly loved it.
One year later, I moved to Boston, MA. (I lived there 18yrs, my American wife and US-born daughter have been back here with me in Manchester for now 19yrs and counting.) Again, I met many to have been at your side of the gig, and you are the first I've heard of speaking in such glowing terms as you do. All those I actually spoke to who attended the PA. side said it was simply too long and too hot.

It's interesting seeing people who don't know the backstory yet reacting to it. It's strange now to think that you couldn't get a charity single into the charts at all before this! They weren't taken seriously but this changed all that. The tragic,moving news report Michael Buerk made for the BBC about the famine can't match the shocking scenes of brutality and suffering we're used to seeing day after day on the news from Gaza right now,and from the Ukraine for the last couple of years,but it did stop everyone in their tracks - including Sir Bob and Midge - when broadcast to the nation in the lunchtime bulletin on Tuesday 23rd October 1984.
This song came out in November 1984. "We are the world" came out the following spring. This song is way better and it was the first of it's kind.
The live version of this, when they closed the London stage of Live Aid, is well worth watching. Especially watching them play “keep the mic away from Freddie Mercury”.
Shout out to Jim Diamond, whose single "I Should Have Known Better" was No.1 in the UK charts at the time, but who publicly asked that people buy "Do They Know It's Christmas?" instead.
Shout out to George Michael whose song with Wham! Last Christmas was due to be No1 but was pipped to the post by Band Aid, but George asked everyone to buy Band Aid AND donated all the proceeds of Last Christmas to the Band Aid charity. God bless and RIP George.
all due respect but his song was no challenge to this song which sold mny millions more then he did. he didnt need ask! It was actually Last christmas which lost out on the #1 spot in the UK because of this song. It famously reached #2. But finally got justice by reaching #1 in the UK beginning of 2021.

This event (1984)was the precursor of Live Aid in July 1985. This song and the concert six months later really brought the Ethiopian famine to the forefront of everyone's minds (although there is some controversy about whether any of the money raised did any good). USA for Africa was an American response to this initiative.
Just a little info you may not know, Phil Collins performed at both Live Aid concerts in the same day, he performed at London Wembley then got on the supersonic Concorde Jet and performed in Philadephia, to this day the only artist to create this record, Amazing!! Love you guys xx

This song always makes me cry. The harmonies are beautiful and the lyrics are heartbreaking. I remember being a young child around this time, and the famine in Africa was always in the news. I enjoyed watching younger people review this and enjoy it!
One of my two favorite Christmas songs, the other being Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. I remember them both being part of VH1's Pop-Up Video Christmas Edition. I was born in 1983, so I've had these wonderful songs my entire life. I get so choked up listening to this song sometimes. Some things never seem to change, but things like this give me hope. 🥹

Band Aid was the collective name of a charity supergroup featuring mainly British and Irish musicians and recording artists.
It was founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year.

Along with this recording and USA for Africa, there were several other groups from other countries who did their own songs for the Ethiopian famine relief. As I much as love many of the artists in USA for Africa (and I love this country--born and raised in the US), I still think Band Aid had the better song all the way around.
The test of music is whether it resonates with the listener. I've heard "Do They Know It's Christmas?" since it came out when I was a teenager; seeing and hearing it again today on your video still gave me goosebumps, a lump in the throat, and a tear or two in my eyes.

Marketing wise it was a much better idea to do a Christmas song for charity, it still gets played a LOT every single year. The radio station we listen to at work plays it every single hour. As much as I love the song, it is a bit much. ;)
Canadian Artists did the same thing around a year after this. The song is called "Tears are not Enough". The Canadian performers were called "Northern Lights'. A few Canadians that are included in the song: Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Corey Hart, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Geddy Lee, David Foster, and so many more.

I'm Canadian and was studying at the University of Bristol in Nov. '84 when the ITV network did and heart wrenching report of the famine in Ethiopia. It was quite shocking to see and this event motivated Bob Geldof to organize this superstar line up of singers/musicians. It was quite a feat to get all these artists together in such a short time and to write the song as well with Ultravox's Midge Ure. The result is a classic Xmas song for sure.
It was Michael Buerk on the main BBC 1 news that reported the tragic crisis happening in Ethiopia that prompted Bob Geldof to start what became " Band Aid " and then the famous " Live Aid".

The guy with the Coke can, as it already been said, not Bowie, but he's Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet, the guy who wrote their hit "TRUE". He also played along side of Whitney Huston, in The Bodyguard, as her manager, SY. And he also played Ronnie Kray in the movie, THE KRAYS, along side his real life brother, and band mate, Martin Kemp.
The blonde lady with him was Paula Yates, the then Girlfriend/Wife of Sir Bob Geldof cofounder/cowriter of this song.

We did ours in the UK first and the USA followed suit. I don't know if we inspired MJ, Lionel and Quincy or if theirs was already in the works but I think I am right in saying they worked with Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) who along with Midge Ure of Ultravox, organised the UK song.

The first pebble was tossed in the water by Harry Chapin and his World Hunger Year advocacy. Back in the 70's he kept pushing for an all star concert/recording in the vein of The Concert for Bangladesh but the idea was shut down, although a few people like Chapin's friend Harry Belafonte kept pushing it. The time was ripe when Geldof took action with Band Aid which made that little ripple grow into the huge thing it became with Live Aid and USA for Africa.
This tune was released first to help aid the famine in Africa. I remember when this was released it was so popular it was played straight into spring. Starts off with Paul Young, boy George, duran duran, spandau ballet, U2 and Phil Collins to mention a few.
This song led to the Live aid concert! It also inspired America to make We are the world we are the children. It also led to the concert Live Aid.

Jodi Whatley is one of the people in this where you should react to her solo stuff. She was huge in the 1980's and early 90's. Not sure why she faded out, if her choice if a bad album or record execs screwed her over, but she put out a lot of jams as a solo artist especially.

Seeing all of our favorite and most popular artists come together to do these projects was the epitome of cool at the time. EVERYONE watched these video premieres!

"Band-Aid" was arguably the 1st Super Star Recording Group to come together to record "Do they know it's Christmas time at home" raising $$$ for Africa.
And within a few months later another Super Star Recording Group came together to record "We Are The World" raising $$$ for Africa as well.
So both separate Super Recording Groups helped raise lots of $$$ for Africa and haven't stopped.
"Band Aid" was a one-off collaboration of some of the best and most popular musicians in the UK. There were members of Culture Club (actually, I think you can see all of them at various times, but Boy George was a solo vocalist), and even the very first guy is Paul Young, who you just reacted to the other day.
There are also singers like Sting (The Police), Bono (U2), George Michael (Wham!), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Simon LeBon (Duran Duran), and many others. Phil Collins from Genesis is playing drums.
At the screencap for 4:49, you can also see Kool & The Gang - I don't remember if they were there to sing or not, but they were definitely invited. Bananarama was also there (they have some big 80's hits as well.)
The success of this single is what prompted Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to do an American version, which became "We Are the World" in 1985.

I picked up the master tape from Midge Ure's house and delivered them to the music company. I met quite a few of the artists on this song. Some amazing talent there that you still have to listen to.

While it didn't get as much publicity as the African famine, the plight of struggling American farmers was brilliantly captured in John Cougar Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow" in 1985. That year, he began a series of "Farm Aid" concerts to try and help.
JCM's Scarecrow album is absloute perfection. 🔥🔥🔥 They gotta do songs from that one. Mellencamp was HUGE in the 80's.

Wow!! Hearing this song actually put a lump in my throat. Most of these artists are British New Wave artists w a couple of Rock and R&B artists. This was dreamed up by Bob Geldolf of the Boomtown Rats and was done in the UK by mostly British New Wave artists. This was the first of this type of collaboration and it was a huge hit. It was on the radio and on MTV all the time. It seemed like our generation just might be the one to change the world. It was 1984 and the world was a very gritty place. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs.
Because this was such a huge hit, the collaboration with "We Are the World" the following year was put together and had a lot of American artists in it.
It was Bob and Midge Ure who did this. It was Bob who became the face with Midge more in the background.

There was a later version organised by Bob Geldof with a new set of musicians and singers. There is a video clip of Joss Stone being interviewed about taking part where it is obvious she doesn't know who Bob Geldof is and refers to him as Gandalf.
There’s also a 2014 remake, not nearly as impacting as the original.
