    So now since you are a Panasonic Ambassador (Congratulations BTW) I own the 20-60mm kit lens with the S5II, 50mm & 85mm f/1.8 primes. I am interested in buying the 18mm, 24mm and 35mm in a full frame. Any recommendations? Cheers!

      I’m not an official ambassador but I do review their gear. That term meant folks only using Linux gear, I use the stuff I enjoy from any brand. The a combination of these primes depending on the job. For most sit down studio shots I’m using the 35mm for everything else the 24 and 50 would be my first choices. The 24mm in APSC mode works out to 36mm so it’s pretty much giving you that middle one. The primes are so great I am away right now and I have the 24 and 50 with me it covers so much.

    Hi mate! Great video of one of the greatest lenses in the small L-Mount-Universe. You layed out the characteristics very well and you showed, that the AF works better than all the critcs think . That confirms my findings. Especially the 35mm is a heck of a lens. Keep on producing great Lumix stuff. Maybe one day the world will recognize the potential of this system... Take care!!

    Enjoyed this side-by-side of the various lenses. Just acquired the S5 and the 50mm f1.8. My initial impression was that it is smooth (for lack of a better description) and not so sterile. But seeing your setup for the lens focal length comparisons, it appears you inadvertently added a bokeh torture test. Some of the bokeh looks nervous (as some describe it) and a little unpleasant. After re-watching the video and studying how the bokeh looks at various subject distances, it seems the nervousness is limited to a somewhat narrow range (with subject is further from the camera). This provides some opportunity to work around it if one is at a location and finds it objectionable. Otherwise, I really like the 50mm I have, but not so certain I'd add another at this point. To be fair, I did get into the Lumix S system to use with vintage lenses; that said, it is nice to have at least one decent AF lens on hand. I like the build quality save the soft rubber focus ring which attracts dust like there's no tomorrow, and for which I worry it will degrade and become tacky (as has happened on some of my other equipment). I'd prefer solid, ribbed plastic or the type of hard rubber like what's found on the Zeiss Contax lenses.... but that's just one opinion.

    I only learned of this channel during your Q&A Tuesday (September 20). Great to have this for reference. I started shooting Nikon 35MM in 1968. I shoot basically stills and am heavily invested in Nikon Lenses since I'm still shooting Nikon. I said that to say this, since people know I love my Nikon's, they constantly ask me what I recommend. I tell them if you want to shoot video, not just stills, there are better choices available than Nikon. From now on, I'm going to tell them to refer to your channel!!! Great info, Shane. It's nice to have a willing accomplice (or as I usually say, "partner in crime") like Rhyannon, and of course, it's great seeing Brave making his appearances. While, I love my Nikon's, I only shoot stills. There is so much more today's products offer, and thank you for keeping us informed!! Please keep the great videos coming.

    Really good showcase of the lens lineup. It boggles my mind that more companies don't do the APS-C crop mode, it should really be a 'zoom feature' if you ask me because you have the resolution, why not? Do you have any of the others outside of the 50mm and kit lens? Seems like the 24 and 35mm make great studio and field lenses. Quality looks awesome. Maybe Panasonic still has some legs left in this industry?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 года назад +3

      This lens lineup is a huge help for their system. It's basically most of the of the focal ranges that people want and need at a more affordable price. The image quality out of these cameras is suburb and the functionality is also good enough that before even getting my hands on the lenses, I got another S5. Panasonic has become more of a niche product with the exception of the GH series but the overall aesthetic of these cameras and lenses I prefer over the Sony I own. That's just me though. :)

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy Very true. Have the G9 and G7 and a couple cheaper Olympus bodies plus the ZV-1 and Doug (ZV-E10) and I have to say, Sony is a bit sad, the experience is just lifeless and control of the cameras is not ideal. Panasonic really knows video shooters. If only OM System had a G9 Mark II of their own. It'd be absolutely killer!

    Thanks for this comprehensive review. You cover all the ground anyone would likely be curious about and don't get hung up on pixel peeping details that only a select few will fuss over.
    I have a S1H with the great, albeit heavy, Lumix S 24-70 lens. I won't fly that on my gimbal and so I'm leaning towards the 35mm lens. I use the FF/Super 35 modes quite often, which will add versatility to the prime lenses.
    Q: Although these primes don't have a "clutch" focus ring option, does the linear focus work as well as on the 24-70 lens? That feature on the 24-70 lens really makes manual focus-by-wire tolerable, and to some degree usable with a follow focus.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 года назад

      Thanks for the kind words. The 35mm is my favorite of the bunch and works amazing on a gimbal situation. The field of view makes it really easy to frame and keep up with the subject. :). Focus pulls are repeatable as long as your camera has the linear focus settings mode for it. I have no problems with it handheld. I haven't tried the 24-70 so I can't compare the two, sorry.

    Hi again, Shane. Thanks for the video. I am still gobsmacked at how well the continuous autofocus worked for the walking shots of you and Rhiannon. I have both an S1 and an S5 and the Panasonic 24-105 f/4 and the AF is generally unreliable (shooting in V-LOG at 30fps). What kind of magic were you using to get the autofocus to work so well? And have you continued to experience usable autofocus since making this video? I know you mentioned one-area and that is what I usually use - in conjunction with the face-tracking option available in one area - and the continuous autofocus performance still makes me want to cry like a three-year-old kid.

    Great informative video. I have a g9 and since the last firmware update I'm extremely happy with autofocus and do think it's very reliable for what I do. Wanted to mention after watching your olympus em1ii video I picked one up for a steal at 200 Canadian dollars. Just wondering if you kept yours? Autofocus is very reliable on the olympus but it lacks some of the features found in the g9. Anyways for the price I paid for the em1ii body it's a keeper and well worth every penny.. There's also a new firmware for the g9 that lets you do linear manual focus with some of their lenses. Keep up the good work always enjoy your content.

      You could just shoot in the 4K APSC mode with the 35mm and it would be very close to the 50mm without losing resolution. It might look a hair different but it will work. The 50mm lens has a really great look to the background blur though but it means moving the camera back further.

      All of the 1.8 lenses are good for low light. It really depends on how close you are to the subjects but the 24mm is a good alternative to the 50 and with the APSC crop you can turn that into a 35mm.

My biggest issue with my S5 is when I move away or closer from the person the camera loses focus and I want have focus when I move around my subject.
    What I experience is that instantly when I move away or closer to the subject after snaping focus the camera starts losing focus and starts hunting. I don't even move faster than your wife when she moves towards the camera. What is the BEST focus setting for this scenario on the ORIGINAL S5?

      Depends on your needs. Try the kit lens and see which focal length you like. The 35mm is my favorite but that doesn't mean anything if it doesn't suit your needs.

    great video and thanks. I'm soon to buy my first digital SLR after my film SLR's finally packed up on me and I'm thinking seriously about the Panny S5 after using Canon Film SLR's for decades. However....dammit, I hate to say it but...that autofocus! I'm vision impaired somewhat (Op pending) and will need an autofocus I Can TRUST! Even in your video, there were glitches, sadly. Why oh Why won't Panasonic build a system to rival Sony or Canon, both of whom, are years ahead.

    not beeing able to afford all at once and owning the 20-60 kit and the sigma 45 i would go with the 85 first and - well - 35? 24?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  2 года назад

      It call comes down to which focal range works best for you. The 35mm is a great choice as it's wide enough and also goes to 50mm with the APSC crop. I feature the crop mode comparison in this video as well if it helps.

    • @Behnam_Moghaddam
      @Behnam_Moghaddam 2 года назад

      i believe there is a 18mm coming, right? use the crop regularly. honestly i was fine with the pixel to pixel crop too...

  • @elephantgrass631
    @elephantgrass631 2 года назад

    When you switch to APS-C mode, doesn’t it just crop? You may get a different FOV, but you get less light hitting the sensor because it’s a full frame image circle versus using a lens with an image circle for APS-C, right? I would think it would like using an APS-C lens on a M43 sensor without a speed booster.

    • @andersistbesser
      @andersistbesser 2 года назад

      4k uses 8megapixel anyway. No matter if you shoot in crop or normal mode. S5 got dual iso and a 1.8 lense is 1.8 no matter what. You will never have low light problems with the s5.

    • @elephantgrass631
      @elephantgrass631 2 года назад

      @@andersistbesser I'm sure the low light would be fine, but isn't the point of a speed booster to get more light onto the sensor? Like the metabones APS-C to M43 adapter?
      If there was some sort of adapter for FF to APS-C, then use the APS-C mode on the S5, wouldn't that give you more light?
      This is just a theoretical question and less of "I'm worried about low light" question.

    • @andersistbesser
      @andersistbesser 2 года назад

      @@elephantgrass631 boosters are made to give a wider firld of view. The better low light is a side effect because it makes the lense faster. A full frame sensor gathers more lightthan a small sensor anyway.

      That's a good question. I wondered the same thing about the pricing structure. It would have been nice if they were all the same price for customers. Perhaps there's either more demand for a 24mm or there's more glass internally. I am not so sure.
