  • This is the direction of the future. Useful AI that can do the research of a thoudand men instantly. It's definitely worth noting that Watson is capable of learning (a point I didn't touch on in this video), so what you see here is the "baby phase" so to speak. I tried to leave out the technical jargon in this video but for those who want to know more, a wiki dump on Watson is below:
    According to John Rennie, Watson can process 500 gigabytes, the equivalent of a million books, per second.
    Software
    Watson uses IBM's DeepQA software and the Apache UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) framework.
    Hardware
    The system is workload optimized, integrating massively parallel POWER7 processors and being built on IBM's DeepQA technology, which it uses to generate hypotheses, gather massive evidence, and analyze data. Watson is composed of a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers, each of which uses a 3.5 GHz POWER7 eight core processor, with four threads per core. In total, the system has 2,880 POWER7 processor cores and has 16 terabytes of RAM.
    How Watson Worked on "Jeopardy!":

      ***** Not at all, as far as I know, it's impossible for Watson to have ideas of its own so that'd be out of the question. The main concern at this point is high level jobs of expertise. Watson could be a very useful aid for decision making of any kind.

      ColdfusTion as far as in the medical field I think it would be stupid to completely replace the knowledge of pros with years of experience... If we get to q point where were reliant upon AI then if a glitch or problem occurs then it would have massive repercussions. Still absolutely crazy that this has been done all in the past 50 years! Imagine the next 50 years, Google might actually control your house lol

      I think Watson is great for research purposes, proven by it's use and success in medicine and economy.
      However It is not intelligent.
      It only collects data provided by humans and filters given information. It is a lot better at that than humans, which is why it dominated Jeopardy.
      But it doesn't process the information.
      It can't find a solution or form an opinion like we humans can.
      Therefore it will always rely on us to make progress and feed it new information.
      This becomes blatantly obvious with the violent games aspect shown.
      It states contradictory pros and cons.
      So while it is far superior in research than most of us, it is not the answear to all our questions.

    Kinda scary. Thinking Watson might be able not just to think reasonable, but maybe to act and control. We'd better call him "Ultron", if you understand what I'm talking about

    • @megalomaniacalHalide
      @megalomaniacalHalide 9 лет назад +8

      Arved Wonnek I don't think you understand what you're talking about. This is an engine to find answers to the questions asked of it, and the information that it relies on comes entirely from human writing. It cannot figure out what questions are the 'right' ones to solving a problem, it does not have any capacity to form original thought. There are simply efficient, high-volume analyses run on existing, human-provided data to answer human-provided questions in a way that makes sense to humans.
      Does that make it clever and knoledgeable? Yes. But there is absolutely no creativity, ingenuity or originality to anything that it attempts. This is not a true AI, but it is an excellent tool.

    • @arvedwonnek3706
      @arvedwonnek3706 9 лет назад +2

      It cannot yet. But humans have an urge to update everything and make AI more and more like ourselves. So, someday Watson may be able to think in right and wrong, and he might get the idea that humanity with their pollution and stuff like that, well, that earth would do better without us. And since Watson is the internet's supreme intelligence, he could find a way to destroy us. And that's what frightens me

    • @megalomaniacalHalide
      @megalomaniacalHalide 9 лет назад +3

      Arved Wonnek
      That's not 'updating', man. That's a complete and total shift in absolutely everything watson does. Like, there is literally 0 capacity whatsoever for anything like that with the programming that watson currently has. Plus? We still don't have any way at all for a machine to come up with an 'original' idea; there's no way for Watson to ask questions of its own or come up with ideas of its own, and watson's capacities are limited entirely to harvesting information from predetermined sources.

    • @arvedwonnek3706

      Ok, you know what? You keep being stupid and I'm obviously wasting my time. I mean, forget the real horrors that already exist, like the fact that we are genuinely engineering plagues and bioweapons capable of slaughtering billions. Go ahead and stick your head in more bad hollywood scifi.

    Well I really wouldn't go as far as calling Watson an AI, for it's basically an advanced search engine and a filter. It provides answers based on documents written by people that, as we all know, are full of flaws/lies/misconceptions. However this is a quite a step towards AI-ish technology, but first we have to get a full grasp on how and why our brains work to have any success at creating what we call an AI.

    Yes, watson can look up and "value" information extremely fast. Faster than humans can. BUT in this example its using sources like wikipedia, wich is written by humans!
    The computer can use and process manmade creations and possible use it in a better and more efficient way than we could. However we didnt see the "watson" actually creating data from scratch, like a person could. The computer doesent do the "raw research" it just processes it in an awesome way! So this is just a tool to make us humans even more powerful, not to replace us, because without anything to give the "watson" any data to process, it will be useless!

    • @ThePudgyPlatypi
      @ThePudgyPlatypi 9 лет назад +4

      ***** just having fun with the idea...but it seems it would be only a matter of a couple generational evolutions before the ability is there for a computer to come to its own conclusion and write better answers to the questions even if data wasn't provided specifically...they still are limited in mobility...haha...but that may some day soon change as well. If we link everything together there is a possibility that it could pull the data it needs from some other machine. Some crazy stuff when you start thinking about it. Internet + Watson's learning power + time to develop + whatever-google-is-doing-with-all-those-robotics-companies = the terminator

    Except that logic and facts are not, and never will be intuition and emotion. The later two is what spawns curiosity, drive, function. It's why we have questions to begin with, it's what drives us to learn, drives us to expand.
    A computer, no matter how logical, can never possess this, hence never expand outside our own past desires.

      I guess you're believing in god/soul? Then I could see where you're coming from. To me we're nothing more than the matter we're made of, and as such could possibly be replicated by software/engineering.

      You are implying that our brain isn't a computational device when it actually is. Why wouldn't we be able to determine the software necessary to compute like we do? We are all part of the same world and a computer is made up of the same matter as you. Thinking it couldn't do what we are capable of doing is the flawed thinking here.

  • @michaelsupper9800

    I do not think Watson will be able to think purely logical, as the knowledge it assesses and bases its arguments on, is human-made, therefore it is not only irrational and emotional, but also somtimes purely false, of course without us knowing that.
    Thus this "logics" of Watson is nothing more than a summary of human thoughts, therefore will not shed new lights on topics or information, but rather regorgitate the common intellectual opinion.

    I'm in 2022 looking back at a 6 years old video, right now we have GPT3 a completely different technology to Watson's, an AI that you can even talk to.
    What a time to be alive!

    Great film, great style and great content as always! It is important to note that Watson has to be limited to searching text books on medical matters, etc. So in the future reliance on such wonderful analytical tools, the source material could be careful edited by academia and skeptical debunkers to exclude info that would result in an undesirable result returned by Watson. For example, Cancer research is currently focussed on genes as the cause of cancer, yet some effective treatments to cure cancerous cells and tumor growths sit outside of this research even though they are effective. Who will program Watson? we need a new generation of computer to impartially set the boundaries as more open, and call it Holmes :-)

    I can just see myself in 20 years waking up and just having a conversation with my computer/robot and asking it something like, "What should I wear today" and then it would factor in current weather conditions, my commute, my personal preferences, and what i have available in my wardrobe and then have it say, "you should wear jeans and a sweater today". That would be awesome.

    Compiling information is impressive. Obviously running on a pragmatic algorithm to collect, store, organize knowledge, and to combine and spew it back out in a "remix." when requested by referencing keywords in a request.

    This is really amazing! Its more on the side of analytical thinking, but just to see it do it all on its own is amazing! It sounds like a part of what could be in the idea of what the Robot was in the movie, "Ex-Machina". This software is being able to come up with reasons on its own, but at the same time had to be made and programmed by humans. No where near the AI from the movie but its a nice step forward and I cant wait to see how it expands and affects our lives in the future. :D

    I have listened to several of your videos in the past couple days, and I really like them. In addition to the excellent content, I also like how you speak. Your accent is intelligent-sounding and pleasant to listen to. Your pronunciation has one feature I've never heard in anyone else before, though, and I wonder if this is something that comes from the community from which you derive your dialect, or if it is specific to you.
    The feature I'm talking about is this: To my ear, you pronounce the -er at the end of words as I would expect the -ar combination to sound. So, it sounds to me like you pronounce "whether", "easier", "later", and "power" something like "whethar", "easiar", "latar", and "powar". Actually, since you speak a non-rhotic dialect, these words come out more like "whethah", "easiah", "latah", and "powah". In other non-rhotic dialects I'm familiar with, these words are pronounced more like"whethuh", "easiuh", "latuh", and "powuh", where the "uh" sounds like a schwa.
    So, I'm left wondering if this is something specific to you -- maybe you over-articulate these sounds because you're narrating a video -- or whether it's specific to the dialect of some community I'm unfamiliar with.
