    Greetings from NZ! The Rider 550 will be a Christmas present from my wife in a few days. Thanks so much for an excellent demo of route planning which is perfect for my IAM NZ activities in particular. Looks to be far more intuitive than my ancient Garmin software. All the best for 2020! Cheers, Geoff

    2 things i don't like about it:
    1. when you try to search places in google maps you have option "cuurent location" MRA do not have this
    2. when planning a route on google maps between 2 points google suggests few routes showing them on the screen where you can select the one you wnt by clicking at it, MRA only shows one default (to them) route without options, if i want different one i need to go long way round by adding extra way points to modify it to the way i want it

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  5 лет назад

      On point 1 - If I was on the road I think I would be using google search on my phone for nearby points of interest or my actual Sat Nav with pre-programmed POI's, e.g. Petrol Stations. Not sure you would be searching your current locations on a PC while creating a road trip?
      Option 2 - yes, that is handy if you want to be given a bunch of options. The point of MyRouteApp though is to plan your route rather than be given one. If you don't need to plan a route but merely want to go point to point then you have no need for MyRouteApp in the first place, you might as well just dial in your end destination in your Sat Nav (or phone/google maps) and be done with it. MyRouteApp creates a track you have waypointed, that is it's purpose. You can also drag the MyRouteApp track to force different roads in the map.
      You can switch from map to map while planning. If you use Tom Tom the tools tab will change and you can choose a start and end point and try the Tom Tom features of Windingness or Hilliness, this will create option routes for you at the click of a button. This only works on Tom Tom.

    Refuel for the helpful video, but two questions about it. Firstly, this requires paid access and secondly, is the route not imported into TomTom as a track? That limits the possibilities a lot. I would be happy to receive a message.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  4 года назад

      It is a paid app but there is also a limited free version too and you could just save the GPX file and reopen in Tom Tom My Drive to send to the SatNav. You are right on the export as a track. To able to use routes with waypoints a different method of loading it onto the Tom Tom is required. You save it as an itn file and import it to the Sat Nav via an SD card. I made another video on that.

    Hi Terry, as the MRA Rider 550 sage could you advise, up to last night I could do what you have just shown, I now cannot get the route to go automatically to the 550 all services are connected and working "my places will transfer but not the routes, connect to computer no problem . I have never had an SD card installed in the 550 but i heard you saying you need it to do what you done !!. What do you thing Regards Robert

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  2 года назад

      Hi Robert, tough one to diagnose remotely but here we go. First off you can do this without the SD card. Assuming your 550 has enough free memory it puts your routes somewhere in a file in the main memory. I only use the SD card to manually transfer the .itn route files (not tracks). First off I would delete any routes/tracks you have on the 550 if you are no longer using them. When you save a track in MRA directly to Tom Tom MyDrive do you get the confirmation that this was successful in the bottom right corner of MRA? If you do, then it saved to your Tom Tom MyDrive account successfully. It is the Tom Tom MyDrive and Tom Tom 550 Sat Nav that synchronise, independent of MRA. To check the track is in your Tom Tom MyDrive go to to mydrive.tomtom.com, login and see if that track you just saved is there. If it is, then it is probably that your Tom Tom 550 is not logged into your Tom Tom account and the two systems are just not synchronising.

      Watch my other video. It is because it is being saved as a track. You want to save as an .itn file and manually import it into the Tom Tom. Now it will be a route with waypoints instead of a track.

  • @shegocrazy
    @shegocrazy 2 года назад

    One thing I hate about the tomtom mydrive route planning is that I painstakingly create a route I want to travel including waypoints but when I send to the tomtom by saving as "myroute" the 550 just decides to do it's own thing. Will this overcome that issue? Thanks

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  2 года назад

      Yes, when you create a route in MyRouteApp and send to MyDrive so it automatically goes to the Sat Nav as a "track". The track is fixed with no waypoints. BUT, if your Sat Nav is set up to "Avoid Motorway" or "Avoid Tolls" and you had different settings in the planning software it will then have a hard time trying to follow that track. Make sure when selecting to "avoid" anything in MyRouteApp (or MyDrive) you use the same settings on the Sat Nav. Alternatively save your route as an .itn file in myrouteapp which you can import into the Sat Nav (see my other video on "Routes or Tracks"). The Sat Nav will now try the best route between waypoints based on its current settings and not follow your track (because it is no longer a track!)

    • @shegocrazy
      @shegocrazy 2 года назад

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Thanks for that. I'll try the save as .itn solution. I may be thinking too simply about how it works but if I create a route in mydrive then there should be a tick box or something that ensures the tomtom actually follows that route exactly rather than reinterpret what I want.

My experiences with the tomtom up to now, haven't been good. I have a lot of experience with mapping programs and sat nav units, so I do understand my way around most. Not sure if I trust the tomtom though. Time will tell.

    Hi terry. I’ve always been put off dedicated sat nav units due to their relative complexity but iam now considering a Tom Tom upgrade. My gps phone set up works for short trips but is unreliable on longer tours. I must congratulate you on your excellent exposition on the technicalities of this issue . You have the expertise and teaching ability to explain a complicated subject in layman’s terms to numptys like me! Can I ask if the Tom tom and MRA is still proving efficient? Also I don’t have access to a PC only an iPad. So would I be able to use this instead to download routes wirelessly ? Thanks again

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  2 года назад

      Still using both and very happy with it. Also watch my video on route vs track as it may have a bearing for you. The good news is you can try MyRouteApp on the iPAD free of charge to see if it works correctly in your browser and if the menus work. It is a software package that really wants a mouse to plan your routes with though but it can de done by touchscreen too. I would just try the free version of MyRouteApp first and satisfy yourself to its functionality. If the menus work correctly, I see no reason why they shouldn't, then you can save the route direct to your Tom Tom login which will transfer them wirelessly to your Tom Tom. If you want a "route" instead of a "Track" that requires you connect to a PC to get it across manually. That might be supported in an iPAD, I am not sure. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Hi can I ask you something. I set my route up I'm my route app like you and send to Tom Tom. The problem I have is it does not fallow the route i set out it changes, I'll end up in same place but its very frustrating sometimes. I know Tom tom has its own plan a Trill and other setting that affects the route you plan but is there anyway setting in Tom tom to just stop it from having a mind of its own sometimes. Cheers hope you understand what I mean. Someone has said to put in lots of way points like one at every turn can help. Do you think this is the salutation?. Thanks.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  3 года назад

      First off make sure that you are using the Tom Tom map when you are planning the route on MyRouteApp as other maps will vary. Are you saving it to your Tom Tom MyDrive account so it auto downloads to the 550 wirelessly? If that is the case you are sending a track which should not change when it gets to the Tom Tom because you have no waypoints, you should just be following a track. If saving as an ITN route the Tom Tom will navigate between waypoints and that could be different to your MyRouteApp based on differing preferences such as avoid motorways etc. When using ITN files you need to match settings on MyRouteApp and the Tom Tom for them to be the same. Having said that if you import an ITN file and change your preferences on the Sat Nav, e.g. to "Windy" it will alter your route between waypoints to be windy.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  5 лет назад

      I looked at the differences but found them to be very similar in terms of functionality and price. I ended up with the Tom Tom on the basis I could save my route in My RouteApp directly to the Tom Tom mydrive and hence automatically to the Rider 550. No such feature for the Garmin from MyRouteApp yet. Its not much of an extra step but i do like the convenience of the transfer. I would go with the interface that suits you best or what you are used to otherwise, I don't think either would be a bad choice.

      @@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff well, after a bit of indoor testing, I will keep the garmin, mainly because I have much more control over the bluetooth connection (with an android phone and a cardo packtalk) than on the tomtom. Also, the garmin has the build in mp3 player which helps the media sharing with the cardo, which can be a big headache via bluetooth. I realize now why people say the BT stuff is useless and doesn't work. It works, pretty well actually, once one finds the correct setup and tweaks, that unfortunately are not touched in the manuals ... oh well

      Sounds like you are saving your file to your PC and not to Tom Tom MyDrive Account (beta). When you get that message it is a standard computer message that just doesn't know what programme to use to open that type of file, It can be ignored for now. You can send your made route direct to your Tom Tom MyDrive account (You must have created your Tom Tom mydrive account first of course, this is totally independent of any MyRoute App). When you save as "Tom Tom My Drive (Beta)" it will then ask for your TomTom MyDrive username and password. If it successfully sends the track you will get a confirmation in the lower right screen of MyRouteApp. That will send the route to your MyDrive app (not your Sat Nav) which does not have to be open. It is the Tom Tom MyDrive that then sends this to the Sat Nav. Make sure you have setup your Sat Nav with your Tom Tom MyDrive username and password too, that is how they link. You should see some part of the setup on the Sat Nav allowing you to "synch automatically with your MyDrive account". As long as you have the setting on this Tom Tom set to synchronise, any routes you created and save in MyRouteApp to Tom Tom MyDrive account will appear on the Sat Nav next time the Sat Nav picks up a wireless network. Or save to an ITN file and transfer via cable, see my other vid, route or track.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  5 лет назад

      Hi Patrick, the GPX transfers over as a "track" so no waypoints appear on the Tom Tom I'm afraid. It is important not to let your track cross over if you can help it too as the Sat Nav does not know the start and finish points (as in it doesn't know what direction you want to travel), just the fact that you have a track to follow. When following the track you do get full directions however. If touring try and split up the route to multiple days. My routes appear in alphabetical order on the Tom Tom by default, I did nothing to set that. In MyRoutApp you might save each days ride as Spain 1, Spain 2, Spain 3 etc then they will all be bunched nicely in your Tom Tom menu. Don't forget the extra memory card for the Tom Tom.

Plus I can create the route with google maps in MyDrive-App which is much easier to see detail and search then when finished I just change the map back to the Tom Tom one. I'm not saying the mydrive is rubbish or anything, I just prefer the flexibility of MyRoute-App. The social side of it is good too for map sharing. As long as I set the route to "friends" any colleagues coming on the ride will have instant access to the maps without me doing anything or sending them files. It doesn't matter if they use a Garmin either as they can use the map of their choice too.
