    He's just so good at timing that takedown when the other dude is thinking about striking, especially ducking under punches.... or literally while the other guy is striking he's taking them down. So it becomes a huge dilemma to try to land shots on him knowing that that's what he wants so he can get to your leg/hips. Master of timing

    I understand people may think Khabib or Charles has the best grappling in ufc history
    I’d argue it’s still GSP the amount of elite wrestlers he manhandled is honestly terrifying but it’s not just that it’s the fact he had no background in grappling he was a karate guy the level of the grapplers he destroyed is amazing

    he has outwrestled a number of accomplished collegiate wrestlers, even more than khabib has.. i think gsp is the best mma takedown artist ever, if we base it on the number of collegiate wrestlers a fighter has outwrestled..

    I’m not Canadian but my dad is, which leads me to remind you Canadians were the first to trench raid and just go berzerk on enemies with there grappling and knives even when they were suspecting raids the Canadians were animals.     Listening to the bias Joe Rogan commentary against GSP, particularly with Hughes and BJ Penn (but also with the likes of Parisyan), makes you realise just how exceptional GSP was, despite not having grown up a wrestler.

    Can someone explain how GSP is able to shoot without dropping one knee to the ground upon entry, and somehow still managing the takedown. Is it his brute strength, opponents balance, and distance management that helps him with getting the take down ?

      It had a lot to do with establishing his ranged tools, in particular the jab. His level change became increasingly difficult to read as fights went on. He also was a beast of an athlete so his reactive double was an ace in the hole.

      he said his karate background helped him a lot with his timing and distance management. also hes setting it up with strikes, so when his opponent expects a strike and covers up, gsp goes level changes and goes for td.

      He has amazing timing and shot a lot of takedowns when his opponents were standing square. Which eliminates the need for a really good shot
      He also was able to reshoot if his opponents stopped his first attempt a great example of this is at 4:31 where he shoots on bj, bj stops it he frames on bjs head and picks up a single

    The single greatest wrestler in the UFC's history. Compare the amount of D1 and All Americans or BJJ masters (Penn) he dominated or cancelled out compared to someone like Khabib, who at best, had RDA (world champion grappler) and Gaethje (D1).

    Excellent video displaying GSP's effective development of the double-leg takedown. Low double-leg takedowns are not as effective as high double-leg takedowns. Low double-leg takedowns, whenever you drop a knee, need more technical skills to turn the corner while changing levels and low double-leg takedowns are easier to counter and take more energy. Why drop to a knee when you come back up on your feet 🤦. This video proves high double-leg takedowns are more effective, especially when teaching fundamentals and new people in the sport.
