Quick correction: Petra is not a Russian name, I got that wrong. BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS! Also, feels fitting to end my first year on RUclips with the show that started it all. Thank you for sticking with me this whole time. I'm very lucky. Love & KitKat to you all! ♥️
I think everyone quickly checked 😅 thank you for pointing it out in focus and for suggesting awesome Ukrainian people. Your videos are great and you are the best!
I can't wait for this show to have an Italian man with dark hair, olive skin and a mustache who works at a pizzeria and we find out is secretly a mafia boss
The irony of Emily comparing Paris to Ratatouille back in season one is that Ratatouille was more respectful of French culture and its people than Emily in Paris is
Even Deborah Cochran, one of the writers, expressed her belief that the more superior "I May Destroy You" was snubbed, and should have been up for some awards.
another thing about Petra is that her colorful and weird clothes, bright makeup, and lousy pronunciation of words are treated as tasteless and uncultural. While if Emily does all those things, she is still stylish, chic, and quirky. (even when Emily's outfits are a fashion disaster) So the subconscious message is that American women > eastern European women ???
If a show is made about a character involved with "fashion", you can basicaly count on "the fashion" being a total disaster. Dunno why, but it seems like a thing.
They did Camille SO DIRTY. She was introduced as the perfect counterpart to Emily's villain - she's cool, has great style, is a good friend, is good at her job, is charming and cute. and then they devolve her into a man-obsessed angry woman?? uuuugghhhhh
Rather than make Emily become a better person, they just destroyed Camille's character so Emily looks as if she's got "better" just by existing in proximity of Camille's train-crash psychological breakdown.
The showrunner has recently commented on the Petra debacle. He apologised, but was SO CLUELESS as to why this was wrong… He said it was "bad timing" due to the war (NO, it was bad regardless of the war), and then explained that "they didn’t even plan Petra to be specifically Ukrainian - it could be anyone from that region: Russian, Romanian, whatever." Sooo basically: "We didn’t mean to be racist towards Ukrainians. We meant to be racist towards the whole region. We don’t even care whether or not they’re all the same thing".
Typical ignorant racist gringo... every time you think Darren Star coulden't be worst he find a way to surpas himself. Or more like show his true colors.
@@nokedili They're still eastern european, and surrounded by slavic nations, so they're obviously slavic (at least unless you know the third thing about people from that entire half of a continent). @@davidribeiro1064 did you read the entire comment that you're replying to? They clearly said it ironically, as in: they recognise that Romanians are not Slavic, but the creators of the series don't.
i also disliked how much the writers framed gay characters as overtly sex-obsessed ?? Nearly all the straight characters are given subtle/romantic storylines, whilst the gay characters got jokes being horny or surrounding themselves with naked men ??
I know it does seem like a stereotype but then there is me and my other gay friends who DO make a lot of sex jokes. However, the sex jokes we make are actually funny because we aren't written by straight people who don't even know how gay sex even works.
But that stereotype true tho, you want a fake portrayal I really don’t understand you people. You want your cake fight for it got it then realize you don’t like the flavor when you eat it come on now!!
@@richboy12ify Maybe the gay people you know are like that, but not all gay people are like that. So the stereotype may be true for some, but it gets used like that is the case for every gay person.
I hate how the show features a lot of gay men but yet all the female characters are presented as straight. Do all LGBT characters in this show have to be gay men who work in the fashion industry?
I'm Romanian (so neither Russian, NOR Ukrainian), and the portrayal of Petra still was pretty damn offensive to me because that's ALL I ever see us Eastern Europeans portrayed as. We're either simple minded criminals with a thick accent or vampires with a VERY thick accent. The writers of this show really need to open a book, be it a history book, an encyclopedia or a fucking dictionary
US media has a very bad habit of portraying USA'ers as full characters and reducing characters from other countries to (often) inaccurate stereotypes. I think eastern Europeans are some of the worst-treated ones out there. I feel bad for you guys! Greetings from a western European.
The fact that Emily thinks the "solution" to Camille's problems is to try and set her back up with the boyfriend who will cheat on her with apparently the literal first woman he sees is wild. Not only did she sleep with him, but she thinks she's got some magic power and that if it weren't any other vaguely pretty woman he wouldn't have also cheated is wild. Like, your friend dodged a bullet by leaving him. Set her up with a guy whose genuinely not a dick or help her realize her value as a person is not reliant on some dude. Don't try and set her up with the boyfriend you know will cheat on her. And stop sleeping with the guy holy shit.
I think it totally makes sense... from the perspective of a very self-centered person wanting to alleviate her guilt as quickly and easily as possible without stopping to think past her initial gut response of "oops I broke something (g&c's relationship), I'll just glue it back together real quick and then i can stop feeling bad."
Emily in Paris had one job: be a show about a basic rich white girl doing basic rich white girl ish and having basic rich white girl problems in Paris. Instead the show tries to make Emily the Jeanne d'Arc /Joan of Arc of self-righteousness.
Preach, a rare case where trying to actively improve the show just made everyone more insufferable. Camille is arguably the one likable character, yet even she can make idiotic decisions, like taking back Gabriel, even after he slept with Emily, and proved that he wasn't a faithful boyfriend!
@@antonizajkowski9698 maybe the revenge plot isn't over yet? Like maybe she has something planned to get revenge on Gabriel too by being with him. That's my hope at least, but I can't believe I'm actually still watching lol
Imagine if they had leaned in to Emily being super awful and intentionally made her in to a super villain instead trying to redeem her, then it might have become a watchable drama
Look what happened to Blair Waldorf, she was and still is a masterpiece, because the writers knew she was selfish and insecure and competitive and would do anything to be on top. BUT, she was also very caring and loving to selected people.
You could’ve still made the show a comedy just mine the comedy from how much of an unlikeable asshole she is, it would make the show more crass but it would actually work and could actually make the show funny
I'm a fan of Lily Collins, and after this and knowing she's PRODUCER in the show, I can't just say is not her fault. She has a voice in the show and can do better. She has responsibility in this too. And the stupid stereotypes in the show just show us the American ignorance of other cultures and how they DON'T CARE ABOUT IT.
You know how to diference between European racism and Gringo racism? European are racist and ignorant, gringos are not only racist, they are also 100% confident in their ignorance.
I saw “what’s new on Netflix notif” and saw two season on Emily in Paris, I was like: “hell no” Also me: “now who’s the mad lad who watched the second season” He’s a lifesaver, kudos my dude
The whole season was terrible but the thing with the letters had me wheezing. "I don't understand why you did what you did, just like I don't understand a fucking word in your letter" lmaooo
I don’t understand how hard it is to make a lighthearted show about a girl and fashion without going into some ignorant jokes. People around the world already see us Americans as ignorants and this show is not doing us any favors. It could have been heart warming seeing her over come language barriers, learning things through her and the contrast of idealizing romance and the reality of it.
No one would've done this, but it would have been awesome if Emily starts the show knowing very little French, and by the end of it, entire scenes of dialogue are completely in French, with English sprinkled here and there
@@MrAragon131 sometimes yall feel like a reality show to us w whats happening there and what kind of headlines we see especially when trump was elected and honestly his whole time in the white house, its definitely been A LOT quieter after biden was elected
2 thoughts: Don't hire people who have 0 sense of fashion Don't hire writers who confuse "lighthearted" with "being allowed to make fun of everything and never be hold accountable to the racist and offensive shit they say/do"
So they got tired of being xenophobic towards French people and holding up dumb French stereotypes so they wrote in Alfie to be a "All of England is xenophobic and hate the French" stereotype and Petra to be "All of Eastern Europe are crazy eccentrics who do crime" as her stereotype. Even Emily is the "Americans are annoying tourists who make everyone uncomfortable by basically demanding other cultures change to accommodate them" stereotype. The writers are lazy and racist. They just go with "What negative stereotypes do we know about this culture" and call that combination a character.
It almost cracks me up how little people know about us precisely bc of TV and its portrayal of us. Like a lot of us are just farmers, hence the memes of Ukrainian tractors pulling broken Russian tanks lol.
That's a real pity about the Ukrainian character, because the concept of an entire episode dedicated to Emily and another foreigner exploring Paris and trying to communicate in French could actually be super rich. Like they could bond over how out-of-place they feel, learn more about each other's separate cultures, Emily could have a breakthrough in speaking French - it could have been a really sweet and poignant episode that genuinely developed Emily's character. But I guess Ukrainian shoplifters are more down Darren's alley.
Honestly, that episode felt so unnecessary. I get that they needed Emily to switch to Alfie somehow, but they could have easily shown that it was just too difficult for Emily and Petra to communicate because they don't speak the same language. But what am I talking about, a cringy shop lifting scene was definitely the "funnier" approach
@@viktorzozulia9258 I get the issue with the portrayal and how it puts Ukrainians in a negative light but people need to remember it's fiction. I think the worse issue is that the Ukranian Minister of Culture has publicly slammed Netflix. The entire country is poised on a potential war with Russia, the Ukraine needs its Western allies and some low level Minister decides to blast a Western company over a piece of fiction?!?! Get a life mate.
Fun fact: With the ending they wrote for Emily in Season 2, Emily Season 3 should not exist because it is realistically not possible for Emily to stay in France anymore, according to French immigration law.
Considering Darren Star casted a Korean woman to play a Chinese woman and thinks "Petra" is a Ukranian name I doubt he'll be familiar with French Immigration laws.
If you remember, right before the show was officially released, Lilly Collins was BrAGGING about how much she was involved in this show. She had a LARGE part in writing and developing her character, as she HERSELF said. SHE IS EMILY IN PARIS. As soon as the show got backlash she pretended like she had nothing to do with it. COME ON HOLD HER ACCOUNTABLE.
ive loved lily collins for so many years and the fact that she’s probably going to be best known for this show makes me so upset, like EIP will just forever be associated with her and I hate it she’s a good actress and now her career is likely tainted bc of this
The bit about her having sex with a under-aged guy is actually familiar. Because Friends did that, back in 1995, in the episode "The one with the Ick Factor", in which Monica who is 26 in the show sleeps with a boy who is 17. He did lie about his age, but she did the same. And still I think they managed to do it better there, despite the writers of this show living 25 years in the future in a far more progressive time. For the record, just don't lie about your age in a sexual context. If you're too young or old for a person, lying doesn't change that and trying to circumvent that issue is just gonna turn out bad for all parties.
I have no idea if 17 was still underage in NY in 1995 (it isn't now), but it certainly is not in Paris. Age of consent in France is 15. So this plot doesn't make a ton of sense. She did nothing illegal.
@Dax Medley, I agree with your point. However, the show making a joke based on their age disparity isn't good. It's the show that's making something of her being 12 years older. It definitely has the "ick factor".
@DRSNova I haven't watched the show--I just love listening to Ninja dunk on it--but maybe the show never actually says he's underage. Maybe it's just Ninja that makes this mistake.
@@onii1928 Here in Canada, AOC is 16. I got interested in the argument, so googled a bit, and 16 seems to be a kind of world standard. I think the writers didn't understand what made Emily such a horrible character. It seems they think that the problem wasn't Emily, but how nice Camille was... So they're strategy was to transform Camille into an evil character and people would immediatly love Emily
Right? When watching the serie I was just thinking all the time: “Camille is sonsa” witch in portuguese means “to play dumb” or being cynical in a certain way! Emilly was the one messing up all the time and Gabriel was just playing the toxic / narcissistic “no attitude” game so both ladies would have to compete for him 🙄.

As person who didn't have emotional availability or luck in love in the past, I thought it was so sweet Alfie was letting his feelings show and planning to continue dating her after moving back to London. It was easier to leave it like that but he chose not to. But of course, Emily had to follow her possy back to Gabriel. Unforgettable or forgettable? They character of the chef has 0 personality and there was no reason for anyone to even like, except for his looks and that would soon fade off coz he has 0 personality.
Riverdale had (still has technically) the advantage of having more content to dislike, Emily was just a one and done crapfest season and could eventually fade into nothingness. Then they made the second season. And now it wouldn’t surprise if they still tried for a third

Everything you said is true and it's honestly uplifting to know that people in the west see it and understand how that kind of stereotypes played for the "comedic" reason impact real humans lives. I think the biggest problem with the show is that it doesn't say "hey watch this silly us girl being dumb in another country! " it says "Look at this smart, beautiful, good-hearted, well-mannered, thoughtul, succesful woman be attacked by the fools wjo don't understad the '''''''american''''''' way of doing things, because it is the only good and correct one". If the show made Emily the joke, everyone would be pleased, but no, they do the opposite. Ps: 'american' is between quotation marks because as a latinamerican I cannot call them "americans" as if they were the only fricking country in the entirety of the Americas.
Yep, for a lot of Americans, other countries are just 1) markets for American products 2) factories with low cost workers 3) huge recreation parks. Also, it's offensive for them that not everybody speak perfect English.
Honestly I think they attacked the whole eastern Europe with their Petra scene. Yes, they chose Ukraine specifically to make fun of, but the point is they chose an eastern Europe country, because we all know how famous eastern Europe is and how it's portrayed in american culture. Ukrainian people are rightfully feeling attacked, but as an eastern european myself, I felt that it was an attack to all slavs and balkans. I really hope they face consequences for this.
Of course it was. I seriously doubt that creators have more than average knowledge about geography of Eastern Europe, and since they are from other continent, said knowledge is scarce. So probably they have no idea what's the difference between bulgarians, poles or ukrainians. And most of the audience have the similar knowledge.

There is Bollywood film called English Vinglish. It has a sub plot where an Indian woman and French man are trying to learn English in NYC. Later that man falls for that woman but because she is married and has kids she refuses his advances. That film is really amazing and conveys many emotional messages
Man, Lily Collins is one of the producers, she also makes the decisions around the show as well... Since she is not only an actress, it is completely reasonable to make her accountable as well. And even if she was only an actress, she should speak up about how the writers are trashing her character and creating scenes that associate her with blunt racism.
@@MillarVideoProductions IMDB lists her as a full Producer so apparently making some actual decisions. If it was just Executive Producer that's usually the honorary title one.
blunt racism? oh please, you people are just addicted to whining. I'm so glad that you covered the problem of demonstrating Ukrainian women in the show. As a young Ukrainian woman, I am used to being seen like this and people do not think that this is a problem.People are interested in watching content in English and netflix is a global platform, so for us it becomes a problem that the only representation about Ukrainian women in the media is only negative. Demonstration of a Ukrainian woman in the series offended and rooted a lot of people in my country. It was soy sed for me, because l true to learn four languages and it scares me, can people outside my country see me like that? National stereotypes are bad, they scare, because no matter how hard you try, you are still seen as a typical Petra or a trophy wife. I am scared because I am preparing to receive an education in a foreign country. I am afraid that I will be seen only as a national stereotype. I understand that no one represents you better than you yourself, and therefore I draw comics with Ukrainian characters, and try to write good stories, in the hope that people will be able to see not only national stereotypes.I worked on my comic for a long time and on the fact that people outside my camp could read it, so if you want to see a story from a Ukrainian from a Ukrainian, check out my comic @elaisamisstry
Their portrayal of Ukrainian women is so offensive but its also the fact that it was completely unnecessary to the plot of the show, some ignorant writer who definitely doesn't actually know any Ukrainians probably thought they were hilarious and didn't think about the how a reductive stereotype actually hurts real people. Any corrections made in season 2 were clearly about getting people to shut up rather than doing the work to become less ignorant. Good luck studying in a foreign country, I myself am an immigrant and know about being subjected to rude assumptions and mistreatment by ignorant people because of having a different background so I hope you can have a positive experience in another country. I feel like they're really sleeping on Camille. She's the only character that I fully like, and she has so much potential, yet they stick her in a love triangle with Emily and Gabriel. She really needs to see Gabriel for the cheating git he is, and focus on herself, and her own interests.
when I heard about her wanting to get revenge on Emily (which is valid, she lied) but it seemed to be revenge on her alone like, excuse me, it takes two people to have sex. Gabriel is as much at fault as Emily is. I dunno if I missed something but at least from what people said, it was her getting back at just Emily.
The writers purposefully tried to make every other character more horrendous than Emily so she doesn't look so bad anymore. It was annoying as it was to blame it all on Emily and still regard Gabriel as the prize but that stupid highschool oath took it to the next level, especially when Camille proceeds to flirt with Gabriel in front of Emily on several occasions and by the end she's moved into his apartment NOT BECAUSE SHE WANTS HIM BUT BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO GET BACK ON EMILY. She went from a cool character to a Regina George rehash. Girls fighting over a guy who is not even worth it, how original, how feminist, how 2021 of them. I wish she was never written as Gabriel's girlfriend and instead as an interesting character in her own lane with interesting story lines that don't involve Emily or Gabriel.
It really bothers me how much Gabriel was trying to be with Emily while telling Camille he was hurting. I had a moment of hope when she was telling him off during her art show but then she immediately got back with him. Camille had a lot of potential. XP
There was a scene where Mindy was performing but Camille couldn’t come because she was “working”. They just wanted to show tension between Gabriel and Alfie and expose their love triangle, clearly Camille’s character wasn’t needed in that scene. The writing is so lousy, I can’t
as a frenchie who moved in Québec Canada and manages to have language barrier issues with english and even with ppl speaking Qc french, I'd love to see Emily struggling to pass immigration, open her first bank account with a teller who barely know three words of english, struggle looking for the English language option on websites until she realizes that here we use the UK flag for it instead of the US's. And this is just an example. It's almost 2022, you can be more open towards other people. When people enable/write-off women predators who prey on young boys, it doesn't only downplay and inevitably damage the perspective of female predatory actions, it ultimately harms all anti-predatory efforts. Creating such a double standard with no justifications can only lead some to justify other forms of pedophilia and sexual assault. In reality, it should all be damned and taboo'd, not just male on female pedophilia, but female on male pedophilia as well. And idk, I feel like this should be common sense......

when I saw the scene in S1 that implied emily got intimate with a minor and the way they tried to play it off as a joke for shock value, i knew immediately that the writers and producers were not only incompetent, but also trashy. i know the legal age in europe is lower in some parts but there are better ways of showing that than accidental pedophilia??
I'm sorry but Lilly Collins deserves some blame. She is a producer and the star of the show. But I guess it is easy to not care when people keep watching this stupid show and she keeps getting paid.
I wish a French tream would make a new series "Emily à Paris" where it's basically the same show, but made by people who actually know the cultures presented and the challenges you get living in a country with language/cultural barriers and makes it a good scenario tool.
As someone who adores fashion(But is too broke to buy it), and has spent time analyzing the fashion of every show she has watched, the fashion in this is HORRENDOUS. Paris is one of the 4 fashion capitals of the world, and the show butchered it. I thought it couldn’t get worse from season 1, but somehow, it did.
almost everything she wears looks too big for her and it doesn't ever look like a style like it does when Camille wears something baggy. she looks like a teenager trying too hard to look like an adult
@@melanieflores3858 I Googled it and the results were New York, London, Milan, Paris, but note that's not a list of the "best" fashion capitals, but the chronological order of the fashion shows that have the biggest press coverage in the industry / worldwide.
Why, instead of hating on Ukrainian women, they didn’t just make a carbon copy of Emily? She could be played by the same chick. But she could be even worse than Emily. Go hard on the stupid American stereotypes and let Emily SEE how she treats everyone and makes them feel? Which would give her the ability to be a better person. Plus it adds the joke of everyone thinking Emily was the one who did something stupid.
Camille's line of thinking: - Gabriel is being distant with me after money drama with my family - Emily said Matthiu stood her up - Matthiu said Emily cheated on him and refused to elaborate further - Gabriel's frying pan was in Emily's apartment after she cooked a big meal for seven people - Gabriel's cheating on me with Emily! After all those hoops Camille jumped through I'm surprised she didn't get gold at the Olympics
Weeks before the bd party, Camille saw it and mentioned it was just like the very special pan he doesn't allow anyone to touch let alone use. She tries to see if his initials are on it but Emily pulls her out knowing they are etched under the handle. Weeks later at the bd party, Camille sees it again and sees the initials. The pan has been there ever since Gabriel was supposed to move.
My solution to the shoplifting girl storyline: Make her American as well. Make her and Emily bond over being from the USA but decide to speak to each other in French in order to practice. Eventually have the whole shoplifting deal and have Emily call her out, to which the other girl would be like "Come on, it's not a big deal" in English. Emily then snaps to her in French before returning the clothes. After all the character was there just to contrast with Emily and make the audience think "Oh Emily isn't so bad", might as well have gone the full way and made her a real "nega-Emily"
I think Lilly should be held accountable. She was bragging about how she WAS Emily and how she had a big part in the show, then was shocked at the backlash (like the rest of the cast probably wasn't shocked but took the roles for a paycheck, Lilly implies that she has no critical thinking and can't understand why stereotypes aren't funny). She only claimed to not be responsible once the backlash hit, then all of a sudden she has no part in the show at all. Also, it really bothers me that people keep saying that but is she really a good actress? She was good in To The Bones (IMO it was a great script and I can't imagine how someone could mess up that character) but that's absolutely it. I've seen 90% of her movies and she seems very much to be a mediocre actress who only gets roles due to nepotism and good looks.
@@belladonna5904 SHE IS A WRITER AND PRODUCER ON THE SHOW. SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING that the goes on behind the scenes. And she has zero empathy for the people she offends. She has no awareness of how harmful Emily in Paris is. Women already don't get held accountable for shit, Lilly Collins doesn't deserve to be excluded from her share of the backlash. She played with fire now watch her get burned.
@Highest In the Room I think Ninja is bias on Lilly Collins, yes. I'm not going to trash him for that. I have celebrities I admire too, but now after that Oscars debacle the elites look more fucked up now.
The thing is, I was actually enjoying Emily and Petra's day out on the town, when they were bonding over their mutual bad French. And then it took that offensive left turn into shoplifting territory and all the wholesomeness was gone. Also, I know Alfie was just a course-correction character, but I actually felt for him: it made sense that he didn't want to engage in Paris society in any meaningful way when he had been sent there against his will, and he was lonely and maybe a little depressed living as a single guy in a foreign city where he didn't speak the language. There were so many opportunities the show had to go deeper and give meaningful and layered backstories (and stories) to characters, but they just...didn't.
Damn though that man had a cool ass Apartment. And this is coming from a kid who stayed in Germany and Romania only. Looks so damn Expensive that apartment.
The worst thing about the whole Petra thing is that it was just a way for the writers to get Emily to sit next to Alfie. Like literally that's it. It wasn't funny nor was it informative. It was useless filler that offended a group of people for no reason. Now if I could rewrite the scene, I would have Emily and Petra go out shopping normally. They walk through the doors carrying their bags of clothes and then the alarms go off. The security guard comes over to inspect both women and when he senses that Petra and Emily are foreign and unable to communicate well in French he becomes hostile, especially towards Petra. By doing this the writers can show the racism and prejudice that Eastern European women face due to negative stereotypes. Emily now sees how hard of a time Petra is getting from the guard and why its important for her to take her French lessons more seriously.
As an Eastern European woman myself, shortly after moving to the UK in 2016 I’ve been asked multiple times if I came to this country to steal, if I am or ever was a prostitute, if I’m an easy woman, if my only purpose was to come here to steal jobs etc etc… mind you, these things didn’t only happen to me, it happened to so many other friends of mine from the same country as me or different Easter European countries. I never realised how bad we were treated in western countries until I got to experience it myself…
That's so f'd up man, I understand to some level because I'm Indian and people used to stereotype my existence very VERY often, not as much anymore bc Ig my classmates have grown up
That sucks :( I'm sorry that's happened to you. Maybe the (tiny) silver lining of the invasion of Ukraine will be westerners learning about Eastern European countries and what the people are actually like (and not assuming they're all just Russian)
That's absolutely disgusting... My family too immigrated to the UK from Eastern Europe and I know exactly what you're referring to. The saddest thing is that while we Eastern Europeans might not be always called thieves and prostitutes to our faces, it is certainly heavily implied at times.
Emily spent this season gaslighting Camille, encouraged Alfie to fall for her then ran straight to Gabriel clearly with the intention of getting back with him- she's not unlikeable anymore, now I hate her. The best thing in this season (apart from Sylvie, obviously) is Pierre Cadault saying 'You can speak all the bad accented French you want, I will never understand you and you will never understand me'. Whoever wrote that line needs to be put in charge of the script because that is definitely not the work of the usual writers.
Holy hell, I'm a Slavic woman and can't even imagine how our Ukrainian neighboors feel about it. It's very noticeable in the scenes that the actress exaggerates the accent, and that with how her lines are written is entirely on writers and directors. Not even mentioning what happens in the episode... The stereotype of "slav" always pissed me off, and now it's in one of the most watched now netflix series. And not a single soul in the creative team stopped to think "Wait, this is reductive and possibly offensive". I shouldn't be so pissed about this, this show isn't even intended to contribute to anything, but it just makes me so angry I can't properly form my thoughts. I thought the representation of eastern-europians couldn't be any more worse, but there's always deeper to go. I used to be amused at how bad emily in paris is, but now I'm just spitting straight up acid while going on this worthless rant
And she had bad teeth, bad makeup and bad hair because slavs are too poor to take care of those things(another stupid stereotype). The scene where she texted her on cyrilic like she was some stupid, uneducated person who cant write or speak anything other than her language is another stereotype and it pissed me off. Like making her a thief while shocked, good american is trying to distance herself and do the right thing WASNT INSULTING ENOUGH. I bet they choose ukraine randomly but they still insulted every slavic and every balkan country.
Not to mention that when she starts yelling at Emily at the store she yells "ты чё, одурела", which is clearly Russian! We can nitpick about where exactly in Ukraine this girl is from, but I doubt her first language should be Russian, but Ukranian.
Ukrainians are here and we couldn’t care less. The fact that such stereotypes are still alive and very well supported in media doesn’t really represent us in a bad way. It surely shows how embarrassingly unprofessional and lazy the screenwriters are, tho. Btw Petra isn’t even a Russian name (I’d say it’s more of a Bulgarian one but I’m not an expert),
As a Ukrainian woman i really appreciate you going in deep about this problem. It's not even infuriating, it's just annoying at this point how western movies haven't progressed much in terms of representation of eastern europeans. We are usually just portrayed as criminals in a side story. Also people (in the industry at least) seem to not understand the difference between russians and ukrainians. It's especially annoying as we are at 8 year old war with them and nobody seems to notice. Even without that fact it's pretty insulting as russia tried hard for centuries to erase our culture and language completely while we were under their governance. I don't like to get preachy about it and I don't hate russians, but it's a big part of our history and understanding that foreigners don't seem to comprehend. If you have a complete lack of understanding a culture, maybe don't put a story about it in your film. Also Petra is not even a real name neither in Ukraine nor in Russia. Maybe it exists somewhere else in Eastern Europe, I'm not the one to claim. Thanks for coming to my rant if somebody sees it
Thank you so much for saying this. I really struggle with the fact that Russia has been piggybacking on Ukrainian history for so long and that so many people still don't have a clue about it. Just a couple of days ago, The Economist had an article about this very fact, and reading the comments was really hard. The situation is getting better, though, thankfully. One can only lie for so long. As intelligent, inquisitive, and honest people, and by that I mean the world, we will shine a light on what's been hidden, suppressed and downgraded for so long. And we're going to do that by being open-minded, strong and caring individuals who stand their ground, who speak up, who simply show how things were, are and will be.
I was also a little weirded out by the name, because for me Petra is a Scandinavian name (there's even a children's book with a character named Petra, her is even in the title and it's like a huge childhood memory of many Norwegian people like everyone knows who Karsten og Petra Are) I'm so sorry that you feel that your culture was misrepresented, I'm French so I also feel very insulted by this show but probably not on the same level as you, again I'm sorry

Having been to France, without speaking French and trying to navigate is EXTREMELY difficult. Also many French people in Paris may speak English but also expect you to speak French and do not make it easy for you. They don't just "switch to english" for your benefit.
Yeah, every country is different with that. I'm German and we switch to English frequently to communicate with foreigners just to make it easier and practice our English and I know the Dutch, the Danish etc. do as well (speaking really good English like they do helps a lot), but there are a lot of countries/people who won't and don't want to and it is just so wrong to assume that everyone will just speak English for you. No. You are in their country and you're expected to integrate at least a bit.
I totally experienced that. People were refusing to answer me when I needed directions and was asking if they speak English. I had a couple who were really fuzzed about me bothering then and not even making the effort to learn the language before coming to France. I actually did make the effort but my French was too poor. So I repeated my questions in terrible French and they directed me in English.

I feel like Petra isn't even just a harmful stereotype of Ukrainian women, but of Eastern European women in general. Because yes, in a lot of Europe this is the (ridiculous and harmful) stereotype for Eastern European women. I bet the writers just threw a dart at a map to pick a more specific country. The only thing they could add to make it worse is to make her a mail order bride.
Honestly: the moment I saw her I said "wanna bet that she's supposed to be bad" I hate it but because it's Emily in Paris you know they are going to do that and I wished they didn't. And indeed, it's not just Ukrainian women, but Eastern Europe. They shouldn't have done it and honestly, why didn't other actors say something? It's not like they are going to fire Lily Collins of the show where she's the main lead..... I know it's not her job, but still
Yes, if female character in tv-series or movie from East Europe/Russia then she would be prostitute, bride looking for a better living or low paid employe who steals or acts dumb. I feel like some part of americans pretty xenophobic, Emily in Paris just another example of often used cliche.
The literally misrepresented every culture in this show. A Korean playing a Chinese character, a Danish actor as a Dutch character that can’t pronounce his Dutch name properly, an English guy that only likes pubs and football, the absolutely horrific representation of Ukraine and all of the French mockery… It’s so stupid and unnecessary
I don’t really have problems with Korean playing Chinese or Danish playing a swede or so etc, since they are actors. What bothers me is that they focus on stereotypes or don’t represent a certain culture correct….
Idk I think it is about showing an authentic representation of a culture. They wanted to represent something but everything, from the stereotypical writing, to the lazy actor choices just make it worse. If you are going to pick a Danish person to play a Dutch character just make sure he can at least say his own name correctly. It just shows how little care they put in to the show…and how much disregard they have for European and Asian cultures.

As a ukrainian woman myself, I'm really shocked when anyone acknowledges our existence. I wouldn't call "Petra" neither ukrainian, nor russian. "Petró" is a ukrainian man's name and "Piotr" is a russian equivalent, so this may be where they got it from idk???? And the shoplifting bit kills me by way of cringe. Obviously, I've never seen my fellow countrymen act like this, and it hurts me that this joke of a show made me point this out. :( Pretty shitty on their part - there is already a stigma around ukrainians, we are not very welcome in the EU from what I've seen, and it will take years for Ukraine to integrate. This kind of representation really sets us back by a lot - even when the public realizes that the series is garbage. I'm happy that the show got the backlash it deserved tho. edit: at least the ukrainian sounds really good, but the mannerisms and tone irk me so much I want to kermit sudoku

As a Ukrainian woman who has been watching your videos starting from the very first one, I just want to say a big thank you for pointing out that particular thing with the character of Petra. These stereotypes about my country in particular and Eastern Europe as a whole have been so prevalent in Western media for such a long time, I can't describe how tired and fed up we are with this stuff. Thank you for all your great videos. And thank you in particular for this one.

Same. I do not know what Slavs did to Hollywood but we seem to always be either done dirty or not done at all. Why have a Slavic character if you can make them a "hilarious" harmful stereotype, am I right?
That and the fact this scene is totally uncalled for. Slavic people are always some sort of villains in Hollywood. Now this is shitty but at least they are antagonists. Here they could have imagined any other way for Emily to end up doing exercise with Alfie. Anything. And they instead created that Petra storyline because…why?!?!?
Petra is not only Ukrainian "stereotype". It's portrayal of all Eastern European women. Americans/Western Europeans don't really care for eastern europe, they got used to this offensive jokes about us and are sure we are all like this. I can't name one good portrayal of slavic/e.e. character in western media. I can spend an hour listing all of the stereotypical roles- gangster, prostitute, abuser, alcoholic, gold digger. It's very sad and scary for me. I don't want my people to be seen as jokes and not "equal" to western people. Also the problem is, people know that the jokes about the French in season 1 were based on false stereotypes. People didn't really believe it, they called out this immediately. In the case of Petra- a lot of Western Europeans and Americans don't question it. It's true to them. We're thieves. We're stupid. We're less than them. They can get away with this, beacause it's not seen as race issue.
Because how they treat people of colour and immigrants in America it shouldn't be surprising how they treat the rest of the world. I will never forget that they choose angry orange who said 'we will build a wall' and many, many, many more disgousting and vile things as their president.
I perfectly understand you. I come from a non-Slavic eastern European country but the depiction is the same: either we are prostitutes or gangsters, and being raised in western Europe I had to face A LOT of discrimination while growing up. It just destroys your life.
to be fair to my country--the USA--i don't think we really think too much about eastern europeans at all unless it's fighting with russia. that's about as far as our engagement goes with that part of the world. otherwise no one would really give a shit that you're eastern european, you'd be treated better than the rest of us just cuz you're white/white passing lol. pretty much all of our russian stereotypes though are either hold overs from the cold war or russian mob stuff tho, that much is true.
As a Russian living in Western Europe this situation with stereotypes frustrates me so fucking much. Always have to work harder to prove myself because of where I come from, because Slavic people are seen as barbarians and one wrong move could just land me in a mess where people just respond to all of my mistakes by saying "oH its cAusE sHe iS rUssIan". This kind of representation is so harmful in a world where you are already walking on thin ice if you come from Eastern Europe. The fact that this is still happening in our times, where we are supposed to stand for acceptance and respect FOR ALL nations, ethnicities, sexualities, etc., is honestly disgusting
I'm not Russian but a Slav nonetheless. I get so so so annoyed when the bad guys in a series/movie/whatever american media are portrayed as Russian 💀 and the hero is of course American 😍 here to save everyone from the bad communists I lose my shit because its so common. Or german even. The villains are always either slav or Germans, no inbetween.
That is horrible! Where do you live and work? I worked with a Russian woman and it actually took me months to learns she was from Russia because I don’t tend to ask these things unless people offfer that Information. She was great to work with and there were rumours about her making mistakes but not big ones and not once did anyone think it had to do with her being Russian. Maybe it’s down to where I live or the industry I work in but people don’t judge you based on where to are from. FYI I live in the UK.
Yep, I feel you, Polish living in UK here. Completely agreed, the stereotypes of Eastern Europeans are terrible and there's little to none representation of us on TV. And any Eastern European women characters I see are either maids, prostitutes or victims of human trafficking, it's crazy it's still so bad.
Imagine if the character of Petra was instead a shoplifting American! They seem obsessed with poking fun at other communities but god forbid they do it to themselves. Since currently the Americans on the show are only portrayed as capable and just.

What makes the Petra controversy very troubling is that it is common knowledge that Eastern Europeans have disproportionately faced discrimination and xenophobia in many parts of Western Europe including France and the United Kingdom. Petra's characteristics embodied a lot of negative stereotypes of Eastern Europeans being dirty, uncultured, and criminals. Believe it or not, ignorant people and political figures spout this harmful nonsense. During Brexit, there was a rise in hate crimes against immigrants including Eastern Europeans. So I find it hard to believe that this "mistake" was due to cultural ignorance. If anyone who wrote this would have any understanding of France or had did at least five minutes of fucking research, then they would quickly have realized how incredibly harmful that Petra character was.
I kept thinking about a hard-working, cultured, Drill funny Ukrainian friend who is married in France now. She qould have been a great and representative character
I think it was a crime to dress Petra as tacky as an American. Especially if she should be a luxary brand shoplifter. It makes no sense. I mean usually ukrainan women are considered very pretty and fashionable.
Honestly I don't think they did realise it was a problem. If they learnt anything from season one it's that they don't have to care and most of their audience won't care either.
Kind of wonder: if Sex and the City had a closer audience with social media in the early 2000s rather than later. Would the characters and the 'story' have been that loved, or would the connected audience have realised the flaws outshone the setting of SITC and progressive traits at the time?
@@falconeshield Really can't tell, because the hype train with SATC was insane. Like my friends lost their mind and every woman was recommending the show to each other. It gets worse next season
Rather than make Emily become a better person, they just destroyed Camille's character so Emily looks as if she's got "better" just by existing in proximity of Camille's train-crash psychological breakdown.
I thought so too. Camille was cool! Someone you wanted to be friends with. They totally ruined that.
But if they didn’t, she wouldn’t be real, I think. Every person has a trigger, that convert them into an angry monster
The showrunner has recently commented on the Petra debacle. He apologised, but was SO CLUELESS as to why this was wrong… He said it was "bad timing" due to the war (NO, it was bad regardless of the war), and then explained that "they didn’t even plan Petra to be specifically Ukrainian - it could be anyone from that region: Russian, Romanian, whatever." The fact that Emily thinks the "solution" to Camille's problems is to try and set her back up with the boyfriend who will cheat on her with apparently the literal first woman he sees is wild.

But I guess Ukrainian shoplifters are more down Darren's alley.
yeah the way it ended was so dumb and pointless
Yup could have for example inspired emily for a campaign, and since the class is a recurring scene, could have been a stable character

I'll also definitely check out your comic because I love webtoons.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I have never heard these Ukranian woman stereotypes in my entire life. So I don’t think that you will have a huge problem when studying abroad.
Also even if this stereotype is more common than I know. You shouldn’t be afraid of going to other countries in fear of how you will be treated because of stereotypes. The people that actually matter won’t treat you differently because of stuff like that.
As a young Ukrainian woman myself, i understand you completely.

Girl, you damn know very well that he'll be making out with Emily in no time behind your back, don't think you did something with this little scheme. He's playing you.
You know, concrete examples of the life of a migrant in a country with a different language. Freak out as her fob contract arrives to its end because she thinks she'll be homeless and lose her healthcare, till she realises that things are really different here.... Then you can have fun with little realisations, like how you can go visit countries around the EU with no customs nor border check, how the price you see is what you pay. There is this anti-slavic sentiment that is really not talked about but especially slavic people can confirm that there is this negative attitude towards us, even tho it's not as obvious as other issues in this world, we can see it. The stereotypes and prejustices towards us are harmful and shouldn't be portrayed in shows like these just for some cheap jokes.
It's fetishization that is just never spoken about, because it's supposedly "empowering", like all those Russian spies in Bond movies and all that crap. But what's empowering about people automatically assuming you're a sex worker because you choose to dress a certain way? Or assume that you're a thief? Or an alcoholic (cause if you're Eastern-European, you must have had vodka from childhood)? These stereotypes are disgusting and I thought we had outlived them.
To be fair, Slavic people hate each other's guts as well. I am from a Slav country myself and the stereotype of Ukrainian/Russian women being cheap and tasteless lives here too and I agree that stereotype is ultimately harmful and we should get rid of it.
On the other hand, a lot of women from my country got famous for being porn actresses and we also consume the most beer per capita in the world and I absolutely do not mind if somebody makes a joke about that, even as a woman.

When people enable/write-off women predators who prey on young boys, it doesn't only downplay and inevitably damage the perspective of female predatory actions, it ultimately harms all anti-predatory efforts. - Gabriel's frying pan was in Emily's apartment after she cooked a big meal for seven people

The writers need to hire you.

It’s a Darren star show, not a realistic portrayal of the life of someone like Emily.

My family too immigrated to the UK from Eastern Europe and I know exactly what you're referring to. The saddest thing is that while we Eastern Europeans might not be always called thieves and prostitutes to our faces, it is certainly heavily implied at times.
So sorry you had to deal with this. Some people in the uk are so stereotypical and it’s honestly disgusting.
Even those of us born in these countries, slavic women aren't treated much better. All people need is a slavic name or face to be hateful.
I watch this show for Sylvie.

Russians:
- Thick accent
- Named Pyotr, Viktor or Petra
- Criminal

I was also a little weirded out by the name, because for me Petra is a Scandinavian name (there's even a children's book with a character named Petra, her is even in the title and it's like a huge childhood memory of many Norwegian people like everyone knows who Karsten og Petra Are) I'm so sorry that you feel that your culture was misrepresented, I'm French so I also feel very insulted by this show but probably not on the same level as you, again I'm sorry

tbf i dont mind misspellings at all, i just find it important for linguistic accuracy to have context
@@Romy-90 yah, both Spain and Greece, people were quite accommodating if you only spoke English
As a French myself a lot of French people simply do not speak English well enough to even be able to give you some direction.
@@o6ina that was my experience exactly.

I know it's not her job, but still
Don’t give them ideas lol
I feel like in the next season they will try to "do better" and depict an Arab person as a terrorist instead. LOL
@@slouberiee they're just checking the marks at this point ✅
Yes, if female character in tv-series or movie from East Europe/Russia then she would be prostitute, bride looking for a better living or low paid employe who steals or acts dumb. I feel like some part of americans pretty xenophobic, Emily in Paris just another example of often used cliche.
Just really quick, as a Russian ucranian person I was also really offended by the only Slavic character who was of course a Thief
Man we are represented by thiefs, alcoholics or not so smart people I'm not even surprised anymore
Haven't seen the show, but I bet s/he looked dirty, greasy, dressed poorly and/or wore too much makeup.
Italian with some Eastern European roots here and I offer you all my solidarity. It was disgusting
@@floraposteschild4184 that, and she was also a thief
Christ, it's only a show, get over it
The literally misrepresented every culture in this show.
They're actors. That's their job. They're not playing people of other races. The issue is the stereotyping
@@nagellak4you I mean a lot of English actors or Australian actors play Americans and I think we can’t see the difference only because all of those countries speak English but if the actor is good and has done the research, I really don’t mind if he is a foreigner.
@@nagellak4you it’s a Darren Star show. None of his work has ever authentically depicted any culture. Sex and the city is just as bad as Emily in Paris when it comes to accuracy
We should all ask for a Season 3. By the time the show finishes making an enemy out of humanity, maybe we can all unite against our common enemy and achieve world peace.
How can you say that Lily Collins is faultless when it comes to her character being so insufferable, and then go on to say how apologetic the producers were about her character...LILY COLLINS IS A PRODUCER ON EMILY IN PARIS. You really cannot sit there and say she played absolutely no role in this characters creation.

American media: Ukrainian women are illegals and shoplifters. Also American media: Let's start World War III for Ukraine.
Umm yeah…
Wish Emily is in Paris was the biggest problem for us to care about rn...
I'm rewatching this video after a few months and boy it sure did.
@@MrMich1lol True, but that Ukrainian insult doesn't help.
Pissing off entire governments seems to be a new hobby of Netflix. 😂
Pretty shitty on their part - there is already a stigma around ukrainians, we are not very welcome in the EU from what I've seen, and it will take years for Ukraine to integrate. This kind of representation really sets us back by a lot - even when the public realizes that the series is garbage. I'm happy that the show got the backlash it deserved tho.
edit: at least the ukrainian sounds really good, but the mannerisms and tone irk me so much I want to kermit sudoku
Feels like they got it from a small raffle bowl of eastern-european sounding names, like when Russian male characters are always Yuri or Alexei or something
Alternative to "kermit sudoku": "Kermit Swiss Aid".
Fun fact, Petra is a popular name in the Czech Republic, but I think they did not know any other name and they did not do any research either.
Thank you for talking about the Eastern European women portrayal in media. It's not just women, it's all the Eastern Europeans, Slavs specifically! We're freaking tired of constantly being portrayed in a bad light in Western Media! It's 2021 for God's sake this offensive stereotypes need to stop!
As a Latín American, I feel you
This 1000%
Yes!! I'm no slav, but I can't stop seeing those harmful stereotypes about eastern Europeans and the other side of the iron curtain in general. This is not a well known stereotype but my region sadly has a right movement that's comparatively loud; and so all I need to do to be called a n@zi or other insults is to mention where I'm from, so I can kinda get behind that offensive stereotypes thing
If there's a top 10 worst fictional protagonists, then Emily and Lady Bug would be in a tie

Same. I do not know what Slavs did to Hollywood but we seem to always be either done dirty or not done at all.
Why have a Slavic character if you can make them a "hilarious" harmful stereotype, am I right?
@@ZundelArt exactly, I can’t think of any positively portrayed Slavic character in Hollywood media and it’s fucking sad
I think about all my dear Slavic friends, kind, smart, sophisticated , ambitious, hard working women and my blood is boiling. The disrespect 😡
Same
Petra is not only Ukrainian "stereotype".
I will never forget that they choose angry orange who said 'we will build a wall' and many, many, many more disgousting and vile things as their president.
literally same with Mindy and any POC representation. They're token characters, its for DiVeRsItY pOiNtS.
I perfectly understand you. I come from a non-Slavic eastern European country but the depiction is the same: either we are prostitutes or gangsters, and being raised in western Europe I had to face A LOT of discrimination while growing up. It just destroys your life.
Oh damn and you seem like a good hearted person to me.
to be fair to my country--the USA--i don't think we really think too much about eastern europeans at all unless it's fighting with russia. that's about as far as our engagement goes with that part of the world. otherwise no one would really give a shit that you're eastern european, you'd be treated better than the rest of us just cuz you're white/white passing lol. pretty much all of our russian stereotypes though are either hold overs from the cold war or russian mob stuff tho, that much is true.
I don't know who is Darren Star, so I looked him up and turns out he's behind the creation of Sex and the City........that explained EVERYTHING
I get so so so annoyed when the bad guys in a series/movie/whatever american media are portrayed as Russian 💀 and the hero is of course American 😍 here to save everyone from the bad communists
I lose my shit because its so common. Or german even. The villains are always either slav or Germans, no inbetween.
👍
That is horrible! Where do you live and work? I worked with a Russian woman and it actually took me months to learns she was from Russia because I don’t tend to ask these things unless people offfer that Information. She was great to work with and there were rumours about her making mistakes but not big ones and not once did anyone think it had to do with her being Russian. Maybe it’s down to where I live or the industry I work in but people don’t judge you based on where to are from. FYI I live in the UK.
Agreed! I’m Bulgarian and I cannot continue watching this show. It is so disappointing

If anyone who wrote this would have any understanding of France or had did at least five minutes of fucking research, then they would quickly have realized how incredibly harmful that Petra character was.
just like how there are more anti-asian hate crimes in the past two years
I kept thinking about a hard-working, cultured, Drill funny Ukrainian friend who is married in France now.
@@cupguin I guess if one isnvt familiar with european prejudices one wonvt notice that this is problematic.
That the Emily in Paris video was your first video blows my mind rn
It’s pretty insane how this single show was *so bad* that it changed the entertainment industry forever
Kind of wonder: if Sex and the City had a closer audience with social media in the early 2000s rather than later. Would the characters and the 'story' have been that loved, or would the connected audience have realised the flaws outshone the setting of SITC and progressive traits at the time?
@@falconeshield I already disliked it for that reason in the first place. I guess they would. But by now it is a "classic"

@@falconeshield Really can't tell, because the hype train with SATC was insane. Like my friends lost their mind and every woman was recommending the show to each other. @@udhav423 what do you mean? I didn't mention anything about Ukraine in my comment😅
Big actors sometimes get producers credits on TV shows, but is mostly nominally. Still, I think Lilly Collins is at fault for many things on this show, the way she acts is part of the reason Emily is so unlikable. Anyway, I don't hate Lilly Collins because of it and I'm not even disappointed at her, because I never really cared much for her.
@@gabrielpmo I think lily does a great job at portraying Emily. I once read a quote from Robert Pattrison ( Edward from Twilight ) that said something along the lines , " when I ( Robert ) read the script , I simply saw a total creep so I played the role like a total creep " and I think that's what Lily is doing , Lily simply saw an arsehole in Emily and that's how she plays the role 😀
Can't wait for Season 3 when Petra is given a redemption arc and she is presented as a complex and developed character battling addiction - shoplifting being one of them.
Why did I think they were gonna do that 💀💀👍
yes, and then there will be a new wave of backlash because they would film it in a way that implies that all Eastern Europeans are addicts. I hope 3rd season will be her returning to US and this show would finally just leave all the other cultures alone.
Yes, but the arc is how she has a child she left in Ukraine in search of a better life. She shoplifts only to sell the clothes and send money back to her family.
