  • FEMA, STATE PARKS & 'REFUGEES' | HISTORIC F4 TORNADO TOWN UPDATE | KENTUCKY
    The major F4 tornado (bordering on F5) that hit Dawson Springs, Kentucky the night of December 10, 2021 has left a pile of debris, some generous assistance and a dash of hope for the future as this town digs out from the devastation.
    Come join us for this update, two months after the terrifying, terrible storm event. The process and time frame for removing the debris, fixing damaged houses and resettling people seems well ordered, and congregations continue to pick up the slack when social services and the 'Team Kentucky' fund don't seem to be present.
    We talk about the plans for rebuilding, the chances of assistance and the things we didn't anticipate when this all started 8 weeks ago. We're looking at some surreal landscape, looking at places that are rebuilding and looking up in the end, where new residents seem willing to take a chance on the town.

    Hello George. I have been horrified by what occurred to your town and too many others. I am slowly watching as it’s not easy. I just read your banner where you stated “FEMA Is threatening to put in more trailers”. This sounds so extremely privileged! I went to Hot Springs, AK after Hurricane Katrina (the government sent thousands to summer camps, then motels there). Pulled my retirement savings out and plunged in for 6 weeks. I was able to assist in so many ways as a paraprofessional Social Worker (just graduated and was in the midst of transferring to UCD, then on to USC). Housing, whether pretty or long lasting is critical. I’d appreciate a explanation of why you said that. TY.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  3 месяца назад +1

      Hi there! I do not know why I only am seeing this comment now, but it's a good one and deserves a response.
      What I said does sound privileged, I did not clarify that well. You sound like you have experience and education that will help this make sense when I explain...I know how grateful people here were for people like you who came to help us!
      I don't want to besmirch FEMA, I know the great need for assistance of all kinds, having gone through this experience. The trailers are often badly needed in places where housing stock is short in supply. We just weren't that place because of circumstances unique to the area, and it was frustrating to have trailers thrust upon us when the best help would've been to use the same resources for relocation, or repair of damaged houses where people couldn't afford full coverage insurance.
      Our town already had a lot of substandard housing, half of which was destroyed in the tornado. Our town--and all the towns except the county seat, 20 miles away--have lost their economies and been shrinking in population for the past 30 years, so vacancies abound.
      Because housing is cheaper here than almost anywhere else in the nation, only about 75 people needed temporary shelter, even though hundreds were displaced in our town alone. I realize this is not often the case when disaster strikes, which is when FEMA trailers make more sense; but here, the older housing that is in disrepair could be restored for less money than the cost of a FEMA trailer, and with the Amish builders in the area, could have been renovated quickly if grant money had been readily available. (The Amish rebuilt a 1000-square foot house into a food bank in the space of a week!)
      But instead of relocation assistance or grants for repairs, FEMA wanted to put in trailers, or make destitute people apply for loans with long wait times if they wanted to restore instead. A few dozen FEMA trailers were moved into the nearby state resort park on a temporary basis; but FEMA also shocked everyone by placing 5 windowless shipping container 'trailers' in a row on the most sterile gravel/asphalt lot at the main intersection in the middle of our town, with zero space between them. (They also did it at night, when there was no one there to see, and it was weeks after the tornado.)
      That's really what triggered my comment, it seemed as if FEMA wanted to lock poor folks into staying in a place where they had no resources and no reason to remain. Our town has a few churches that try to help the poor, but all the government agencies set up to help them are in the county seat, far away and with no transit links for poor residents in Dawson Springs to access them. Even before the tornado, it was clear that many of the people in town would be better served if they moved elsewhere, but stayed in ramshackle houses because they couldn't get assistance to move.
      So putting in trailers just seemed like forestalling the inevitable, which is that our poor little town needed to contract in size and fix what was already there, and the poor folks who were displaced needed to go where they could get long-term help.
      I understand that our situation is not the norm for such events, and I would gladly take any housing and give humble thanks if I were displaced. It was just frustrating to see a top-down, one-size-fits-all solution being imposed that didn't seem to ask locals any questions, or take into account our actual needs.
      A social worker in our town who worked for FEMA during Superstorm Sandy described abandoned FEMA trailers becoming the new ghettos when she returned for a follow-up visit 2 years after the storm, which had us worried about their ultimate fate here. Fortunately, the occupants in our FEMA trailers quickly found other housing, and the trailers were not left behind to become slumlord housing.

    • @lucindawalkerakavintasticf9425
      @lucindawalkerakavintasticf9425 3 месяца назад

      @@TheAntiqueNomad thank you for expanding on this. FEMA did several similar things during the displaced population after Katrina. It is a wash your hands government approach. There’s never any true assistance offered to our poorest and most in need. Many were grateful for the trailers but, there were greater demands that were only met by people like myself creating programs through the Charity Houses and Churches. An excellent example would be that people would finally get housing through FEMA but then they had to wait for furniture and cookware for several months. Obviously that was ludicrous.
      I approached the charity house in Hot Springs Arkansas, and started a whole program of donating cookware and furniture and sheets and blankets and within a couple weeks people had what they needed, so I understand thank you for your very thoughtful reply.
      I do realize that you just triggered something in me and it was a frantic time and upsetting Time and there were a lot of just kind of soundbites in trying to make a quick video to show people what was going on. My apologies if I upset you. The whole thing always upset me so there we are
