    i understand that people complain about her exaggerated feminine features but, to be fair, most male superheroes are also a male archetype

      Isabella Bornberg Exactly. While women get an insanely high waist:hip ratio, men get a similar shoulder:waist ratio. Both also have chests that basically double the distance from their nipples to their back, just that women get this from impossibly perky boobs while men have impossibly large pecs.

      What is "exaggerated"? It's a comics and a comics adaptation, all the people are "exagerated" or more idealised physically.
      Some people (even pretending to be feminists) are now mixing up sexy with sexism. Feminism has never been synonym to puritanism and hiding the body forms, the problem is when some people are only seeing the body, denying the inside and objectifying. but the problem is only on them! and they have to change, it's not on the person watched, no matter how she's dressed, if she's beautiful etc.
      And as you say, strangely no one is questionning the men's outfit, body, beauty etc. in comics, as if the ones blamed for those characteristics were always women 🙄

    Wonder Woman made me cry in the cinema, because I was so proud. The moment when she ran across the battlefield and the music started playing, I lost it. I had chills and it was beautiful.

    I really enjoyed this. Wonder Woman's creator really was an interesting man - I would recommend "The Secret History Of Wonder Woman" by Jill Lepore, to anyone who wants to learn more about William Moulton Marston, and Wonder Woman's history.
    I've been a WW fan for most of my years on this earth. But her character has been treated shoddily by DC. There were many rumours of movies that came to nothing, for decades - somehow, I became accustomed to disappointment where WW was concerned.
    I went to see this last night - half-excited, half-afraid. That I would leave dismayed, and feel her character, again, hadn't been given the respect she deserved.
    WELL. Gal Gadot is AMAZING. The criticisms of her when she first got the role really annoyed me - too skinny, not good looking, can't act. As always, most of it centred on how she looked (have we really moved on since the first WW comic hit the shelves in the early 1940s?!).
    Are they MAD? Gal was absolutely fantastic. I came out of the cinema feeling quite emotional. Proud. Thankful that AT LAST DC GOT IT RIGHT!
    I don't know why I felt so, almost, tearful - maybe some long-forgotten childhood memory? Wonder Woman taught little girls to be just as good as any man, that they had power in their femininity, that they can create change though love and kindness, but at heart they are warriors....and I have never forgotten.
    All the Wonder Woman bumpf I've collected over the decades is looking over me, as I type :)

      LJ K To bad it's just a fictional character,a woman in real life could never be anything like that.Also the only reason why she has become popular is mainly due to her sexy outfit rather than backstory

    • @louise_8546
      @louise_8546 7 лет назад +7

      I think the fact that she's been one of DC's "top three" and been around since 1941 must count for something - even though her popularity, comic book sales-wise, has been patchy for most of her existence.
      Not sure why you're comparing a "fictional character" (as you said yourself) to a real woman - she was created by the Gods, and daughter of Zeus, depending on which origin story you subscribe to - should we compare the Kryptonian Superman to a mortal male?!
      It's make-believe, but there's still something a girl, or woman, even a man, can take from the WW story.
      Little girls, just like little boys, look for role models, and love fantasy and feeling powerful. I always told my little brother "It's not - You Belong To The World....The World Belongs To You". I see boys running around dressed as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man all the time (especially nursery school age). Nothing wrong with a little, or big, girl wanting to be a Wonder Woman.
      Her outfit, especially nowadays, isn't that "sexy". She originally wore a skirt/culottes in her earliest days, which I kinda prefer. To say that she "has only become popular because of her outfit" is quite insulting to the many women who went to see it at the cinema, actually. If you're a man, and that's all you got from it (if you even watched the movie/read the comics), well, I can only feel sorry for your tunnel vision.
      Does anyone say "huh, everyone went to see Superman because of his skin-tight outfit and muscles?" No? I "wonder" (ha) why not? You can ponder over that, if you wish...

      Even though I wasn't really a fan of hers before, I really enjoyed the movie. In a cynical world where movies have gotten darker (especially the DC movies), this movie is a breath of fresh air. It was really an emotional experience to see a character that wouldn't back down when they felt they could do something to make the world better. I have a new found love for her character that I didn't have before. It's moving to see a female hero get a good movie, but it's also equally moving for me to see someone with that kind of resilience.

      @Max-ux8ny 7 лет назад +3

      You must've thought you were really badass using that last phrase but all you're doing is changing what the movie really is, which is a well made movie, with the argument that it's is shit just because of how the characters are because in my opinion well developed racoons are better than badly characterized human characters (I won't say Groot is well developed, but it's better than Suicide Squad's Joker and he says like only 3 words). Now to completely destroy your comment:
      1- "Then don't watch it" What the fuck is that argument? "Oh just ignore Hollywood's bad practise to throw at us an awful movie to win money by using famous characters. Oh, are you a cinema fan? Oh, but you don't like it? Then, don't watch it because you cannot give a fucking constructive critique, you marvel fanboy. Ignore the bad cinematography, bad acting, bad script, bad editing, bad lightning. You must be a Marvel Fanboy".
      2- "Marvel fanboys" - Did I ever say I was a Marvel fanboy? I fucking hate some Marvel movies. I think Thor: The Dark World was awful and I'll give you a critique of it if you wanna. It's one of the worst pieces of superhero cinema I've seen. And so is Avengers: Age of Ultron. Just because I don't like movies made by the rival studio doesn't mean I like it.
      3- "always trash DC movies anyway" - I presume you're talking about the DCEU. If you're not I love Dark Knight. I love the original Batman movies. I like the first two Superman movies. Now, we (people with brains) wouldn't critique your movie if it wasn't shit. I'm not criticizing it just because it's DC. I love DC's comics. What I don't love is the DCEU ruining DC Comics' characters. What I don't love is the DCEU destroy the possibility of a good DC movie in the near future.
      4- "That's not news anymore" - Go fuck yourself.
      5- "Go re-watch your talking trees and racoon movie." - Go re-watch your clown and crocodile movie.
      Nicely done mate. Wanna bet five pounds?

Also it is cram packed full of symbolism.

    The first and greatest of all the super heroines is Fantomah. Fantomah was this buxom blonde Goddess. She looked like a 1930s Hollywood starlet but in truth she was a Goddess. When angry her skin would turn blue and her face would melt away exposing her skull complete with a vengeful gaze and she would literally destroy evil doers without any mercy.
    She was the prefect combo of beauty and ugly. Peace and violence. Cruelty and compassion. Romance and horror.

    It's Ironic that this icon of feminism started her roots in a far less feminist fashion. The early Wonder Woman comics where basically soft core bondage mags with Wonder Woman being tied up and dominated by the villains on more that one occasion. It was a conscious decision I believe. You could say though that she fought to become more than that as she became more dominant over her adversary's and became a feminist icon. The person who came with the idea of Wonder Woman also invented the lie detector I guess that is also the origin of the lasso of truth. Lol Wonder Woman encouraged lesbianism I was a young boy who grew up with Linda Carter as Wonder Woman I can tell you she encourages a fair amount of heterosexuality as well :). LInda Carter was beautiful her figure aside she had the most stunning blue eyes and smile she was truly beautiful. Gale Gadot is lovely and awesome but Linda Carter will always be Wonder Woman to me. Apparently Wonder Woman has out sold 50 Shades Of Grey now not surprising looking at the bondage in the early comics lol :).

    I read once something about W W's creator, William Marston, saying...OK, I don't remember it perfectly, but the essence was that he felt women were better than men (at least to some degree) and female beauty and femininity is in fact a power that women have over men. He felt women are equally intelligent and capable as men and women's more compassionate natures made them better than men, less likely to cause harm to others and the world. Add that men's attraction to women--which (I guess) distracts men long enough to pay attention to women, giving women the opportunity to argue in favor of compassion rather than violence--well....OK, I hope I articulated that well, that's the best I can do for now. But it makes me love "Wondy" and Marston even more.
    Oh, and also read that part of the bondage and chains and such was simply that all super heroes need a weakness.

    Difficult episode to do. Well done and Multilayered as always. Going back to the Carrie episode, every child and generation thinks they were the first to discover ideas in the world. Therefore Feminism in our time is ethnocentric. Wonder Woman is actually my second favourite character after nightwing but I never realised the hypocrisy of so many events in her history of comic books and tv. As a Muslim I believe we have a different view on fe/male archetypes and sexuality. Something which in the vein of what gal gadot said, that each other can learn from. For example there are four women archetypes, who were they and what were they about? Any study of feminism should always include the views and history of 1/4 of the world population. Just my thoughts.

    The reason the movie is set in World War 1 instead of World War 2 is because if there were any references to the NAZI's in the movie at all it would not be allowed to be shown in Germany. Germany has strict laws about depicting the NAZI's. It's the same reason Captain America fought Hydra instead of NAZI's in his first movie.

Gender politics must be very different wherever you are because that's just what the social justice loons say in the US.

      She was both. Access to birth control let women make choices about reproduction, allowing them to be safer at work or be more fulfilled in their home life. It was also a bid to control the population, especially the population of immigrants and minority races. Although nowadays feminists tend to turn up in solidarity with other movements, that is a situation created by our current society's problems. One common way of keeping people oppressed, is to pit another oppressed group against them. Early British feminists used their whiteness to argue for their right to vote, for example. American feminists encouraged women to work in the factories which were artificially perpetuating slavery (a practice that otherwise would have become economically unfeasible by the end of the 18th century). Sure, suffragettes marched on behalf of ending slavery in the North: but in the South feminists were ardent supporters of the Confederacy, since in such a society they didn't have to work and could pursue education. See *The Beguiled*. Not until the 1900s do we see the rise of Marxist feminists, who argue for solidarity with all other oppressed groups. Even today, you'll find plenty of racist feminists.

    Most over analyzed character origin ever. It's enough that she is all the good things that make up a badass superhero, and that she just so happens to be a woman.
    That's all that matters, and to a true feminist that is all that should matter.

    • @Scanny524
      @Scanny524 6 лет назад +3

      UnknownUzer I think it's ridiculous that people people aim to reduce meaning and context when discussing feminism. It's the same with race, you can't just erase the different history and context that people live in. You can't pretend that men and women live the same lives even today, even in the western world. Trying to remove any acknowledgement of symbolism, meaning, or history, is wilful ignorance.

      Rjkz ,bkfy If the previous DCEU films haven't connected with you personally- that doesn't make them "shitty" movies. Seeing as Suicide Squad made more at the box office without a release in China than Doctor Strange (which I enjoyed as well) did with a China release and BVS has outsold Captain America: Civil War (which I also like) in home video sales- not to mention that both these DCEU films made 3 times their production budgets and the critical reaction for Wonder Woman has been overwhelmingly positive- I'd say that it's "in the bag".

    Want a BETTER ending to the Wonder Woman movie? Why didn't Diana become like an Innocent Loving Child 'as an adult' to conquer evil?? 'Wonder Women' was EXCELLENT and it had ONE BIG Boo-Boo at the end when she killed 'the bad guy' with that special sword. (Sadly, so typical humanity and Hollywood) Why didn't Diana re-remember her innocent pure vulnerable loving sweet child personality and, as an adult, instantly develop a 'childlike innocent pure vulnerable assertive powerful eye-to-eye adult look' of 'powerful light streaming out of her eyes to his' communicating the words "I Love You, because I can't hate you or anyone as it's just NOT in my nature or design" (as she laid down her weapon) and have HIM 'realize and re-remember his evil non-goodness ways' and then 'bow down at her feet'... OR... have HIM 'self-destruct himself' as 'good (finally) conquers evil' and he self-implodes in upon himself and then disappears 'off into the Universe' FOREVER! Isn't THIS 'The Real' answer to Divine Femininity finally conquering the robotic patriarchal ca-ca attitude in order for THE True Gentle-Man and Gentle-Women to emerge and evolve again? Let's return to ONE Human Race with two genders and/or 'mixed or blended' and 7 billion unique 'shades of brown' melanin skin tones creating a NEW 'Golden Brown' civilization! So be it! Amen!
