  • Things didn't end too well for the Little Red Riding Hood...
My performance of Rachmaninoff's notorious, formidable, deranged (could use many words here) etude.
And a word or two about my, if you will, relationship with the piece:
I was around 14 the first time I listened to it and stood completely entranced by its beautiful chaos. Of course, the desire to play it emerged immediately so I armed myself with a score and sat before the piano.
Then the naive 14-year-old me cognized the key of a-minor and thought "great, that shouldn't be too hard".
I got past the chromatic ascensions and reached the rapid, pulsating 16th notes, and it wasn't long before I stood up in rebellion, cursing both the piece and Rachmaninoff. And that's quite far from the truly difficult moments in the piece, so the conclusion was "let's try this in a year or two . . . or more".
And it was 5 years later, when I was 19 and a student at a music university, that I grabbed the score and decisively sat before the piano to learn the piece, and this time, in its entirety.
And this became my most-used example of what one is capable of doing when one's will to achieve something is at its peak - I memorized the piece in precisely 7 hours, and could it play without peeking at the score and without stammering (at a slower tempo, of course, and only general dynamics applied, mastering the musical intricacies and subtleties obviously takes months of arduous practice).
For comparison purposes, I remember a simple and easy two-part invention by Bach taking me more than two months to memorize (!!!) for the simple reason that I found it extremely boring.
It's been years since I learnt the Little Red Riding Hood and I finally decided to record a performance of it now in 2022.

    不思議な運指ですね😮
    読譜に間違いがあるのが気になりますが、素晴らしい演奏です👏

Thank you very much. I know the standard fingering is 2-3 rather than 2-2 (I believe you're talking about the music after the chromatic intro) but I got used to 2-2 and kept it that way. It's more tiring and I wouldn't recommend it, I was just too lazy to change it to 2-3 and get used to that haha.

      @@NKolarovski私もその運指を試してみましたが、意外と弾きやすいですね!
      読譜の間違いについては47小節の右手、103, 105小節の左手のことです。確認してみてください!🙇‍♀️

@@ucj5421 I checked the measures you pointed out multiple times with the video speed decreased and there are no mistakes in the music text. Could it be a difference in scores perhaps? I was using "Complete Preludes and Etudes-Tableaux" by Dover Publications, Inc, New York.

@@ucj5421 Thank you for your insight, I am grateful, you made me investigate the piece more which is great c: It could be a difference in scores then, indeed.

In che senso fa i ribattuti con lo stesso dito?

I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking whether it makes sense to play the repeated note with the same finger rather than 2-3, well, it's the way I learnt it so it does make sense to me and it sounds as it should. Do correct me if I'm mistaken in my translation.

@@NKolarovski it was a good translate, i didn’t know how to name it so i wrote it in my original language. Btw you’re so good to do this technique with only one finger, i’m gonna be serious…i’ve never seen this “trick” before. Very nice performance btw.

@@Loreh0 I thank you for your kinds words. Most of the pianists play it with 2-3 fingering since it's better for practical reasons (the index finger doesn't tire too much that way obviously) but when I started learning the piece 7-8 years ago, using the same finger seemed easier so I kept it that way. Gotta warm up and relax the hand a lot before playing it this way though.

Thank you my friend, I agree with your remark, should slow it down a bit and take greater control.
