I read that this video is about an aging artist who is awakened from an emotional slumber by memories of her art/muses. She gave her life to her art. She bleeds paint.
It's actually about death. She's seeing aspects of her own personality. And finally the angel at the end is surprised that she took her hand. And she tells her in a whisper if I to go then the angels in white come to take her away
My friend and I watched this video years ago and we always thought of it as Peter Pan. The woman is Wendy before she dies. All of the characters she meets from Neverland visit her memory in her final day. First Peter, then Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and the ballerinas are the lost boys. Each color represents a memory of neverland. At the very end, after re-living all those amazing memories she is at peace. This is a beautiful piece no matter what.
When the day is done And I lay me down I sit alone in my lonely bed And I think about The day we had And it makes me sad 'cause you're gone When the day is done And I lay me down This sheet's so cold And your space is dark And I hear you whispering something sweet And it doesn't move me and it knows me When the day is done And I lay me down I sit alone in my lonely bed And I think about The day we had And it makes me sad 'cause you're gone After all I'm married to the wandering star I kissed his moon It was full and I fell in love with thee But now, the world turns around me Turns around me Turns around me Turns around me When the day is done And I lay me down This sheet's so cold And your place is dark And I hear you whispering something sweet And it doesn't move and it knows me After all, I'm married to the wandering star I kissed his moon It was full and I fell in love with thee But now the world turns around me After all, I'm married to the wandering star I kissed his moon It was full and I fell in love with thee But now the world turns around me When the day is done And I lay me down This sheet's so cold And your space is dark And I hear you whispering something sweet And it doesn't move and it knows me
Working for the Moscow Ballet, I always interpreted this to be a dying teacher being visited by the greatest--and the worst--of her memories of specific students. The fourth dancer, the blonde, is clearly one of her favorites--perhaps a maternal sentiment?--and is able to coax her from her fugue and elicit a physical response and emotional reunion. All in all, a totally beautiful execution to accompany one of the artists best songs!
This video makes me cry every time I watch it. It perfectly portrays the journey of an artist, which also portrays the emotional journey of any person. My favorite part is when the young version of her dances with her, representing when someone is in their emotional and physical prime. Life is so precious and fleeting. Every moment is important.
My thoughts on it is that the first few dancers are several stages of death. During the first few she is confused and it is something new to her. The man with the pants is the pain she is facing knowing what she has to leave behind. I feel like the lady in blue represents the moment where she accepts it as something beautiful and not something to be scared of. I think that lady whispers "it is all going to be ok" and after that, the dancers in white are angels taking her up. Just my take on it
Every once in awhile a great music video comes along that makes you really think, gives you chills, maybe even brings a tear to your eye. For me, this is one of those videos. I think it can be interpretted in so many ways, to the point that no two people may have the same interpretation. And that's okay, maybe it's even better that way. The song is great, but this video makes it spectacular.
I don't believe it would be an exaggeration to say that I have listened to this song close to 30 times in the past 24 hrs...it has blown me away. STUNNING!
I see this video as a story of this woman and her life. The first dancer represents her childish sense of wonder and imagination, the second represents her sensuality as a woman and the fiesty attitude she expresses, the third represents all of the pain in life, and the last represents all the joy she has experienced and the overall beauty and positivity of life. In the end, the woman has reached peace and is content with her time, accepting death and allowing the white angels to take her away.
She must have been a beautyful young dancer herself. She still is a beauty. It makes me cry, when I see her getting over it and becoming playful again. Passing over may be less frightening then.
The spirits of her artwork come alive and comfort her in her lonlines that has come with a long life. The emotions from which she created the characters are revisited and she bleeds the colors she imagined.
This video is a true masterpiece in my opinion. I don't know about anyone else, but I can interpret so much symbolism in this story. It is told with such grace and beauty... well done!
I read in an interview (with the Director in 2012) that each of the dancers that approach the artist actually danced to different music while filming this to help them get in character---does anyone know where I might find out what music they danced to? I know one (the third dancer I think) used Massive Attack/Paradise Circus. I'm just really interested in what they had playing when they got in character since they are all so amazing. I love this video. :]
Hey, I'm doing research on this music video for an essay and I wanted to find out the same thing! So I tweeted Eugene Lee Yang (the director, ELY) and he said that Dancer #1's song was 'I'm God' by Clams Casino, #2's was 'Wildfire' by SBTRKT, #3's was 'Paradise Circus', #4 listened to 'To Build a Home' by the Cinematic Orchestra and the dancers in white were choreographed to Polica's song :)
My thoughts on the concepts..... First is youth and wilderness, second strength and will, third fear and oblivion, fourth love and content. Since all those ballerinas color themselves differently, the last thing would be a composition of all these traits and emotion to represent human life.......That's What I Think :)
Its like just everything they do is so beautiful and haunting and moving. Its like they take music to another world. So uplifting in these difficult times we are all facing .
I feel the room represents the old woman's life or soul, the dancers are representations of herself at different times in different ways - sometimes joyful, sometimes frightening, sometimes nurturing... the energy she put forth into the world. As she comes to terms with her own mortality she bleeds the primary colours from her head first, breaking away from the rational and intellectual, becoming more earthy and primordial herself until she is consumed by her own release. She is liberated.
I'm rendered speechless by how beautifully this video fits the song. Not a literal interpretation but something more subtle and with universal appeal. Young and old alike can empathise with the lady grabbing on to long-distant memories. Just beautiful
I feel that the ones in white at the end were her blank canvasses and the whole video is about her creation process and how much joy she feels about her works. I don't think it's dementia, just memories washing over her as she is slowly unable to hold her brushes anymore - the little movement she has until the end when her hands touch the blank canvasses again and the joy that comes out with it. Remembering that is lighting her soul once more. That's how i feel about it. Amazing video.
A friend of mine told me about this song and video a few years ago. Her son was the one of the videographers who worked on the video. The video is beautiful and the song is very haunting and brings back memories of lost and long ago love.
This is the music that the louder you play, the better you feel. What a beautiful video, so many different perceptions. I could watch this over and over and still come up with different meanings. Powerful. Work like that isn't created anymore.
I've been watching this video nonstop trying to understand it. Whatever it may be, it always brings me to tears and gives me goosebumps! I've never felt so much from a song and video.
Priscilla Coral Im sorry for your loss...your brother had great taste in music..when I first heard this I thought about my own life...my own mortality...it was all I listened to for a week or two...and today ive posted it on my FB dedicated to the mother I lost yesterday...this is beautiful music.. im so glad it its something you can use to remember your brother with...
this video is so beautiful. my mother fell into a deep agoraphobia with severe anxiety and constant panic attacks after the orange nightmare took over the country, and has yet to break out of it. this video made me think of her and i actually broke down a bit in tears, wishing that we could pull her out of her hole as the dancers in this video did. i just discovered this band yesterday and am really glad i did, albeit very late. lol
i spent waaay too long sleeping on this style (and others) of music and only listened to metal and punk. glad i broke out of that and have been discovering so much more amazing and beautiful music!
For me, is about a person who lost faith and inspiration in life. Waiting to be touched by the feelings of feel alive and the beauty of art, the beauty that inspires life. As an artists who is enduring a really hard lost in my personal life, this video made my day and probably my try to feel in a better mood.
It seemed like the woman's past paintings were coming to life to remind her of the life/joy she experienced through making art... like instead of her creating life through art, the art was giving the life back to her... and then once she was full of life again she created more art with the dancers in white/ fresh canvases. She made the art and then we see that the art actually made her.
This is only my interpretation but this video is showing the personal experience of an old woman on her deathbed (the room she's sitting in is her mind). Many memories of her past relationships flood her mind - the various dancers representing these people, coming back to her to help her come to terms with everything she lived and felt and bringing her comfort: telling her "everything is okay". The white dancers at the end are angels to help assist her pass into the next world.
Everyone's gonna think I'm bullshitting but.... Even though this video may be portraying an old soul, a woman through Or at the end of her experiences- but I feel like I can relate a lot even though I'm 14. It's how you perceive the world in that moment, that's all that matters
Houd Ammari haha I actually feel completelyyy different. I feel way more naive and new to the world than I did when I was 14 which is probably a good thing lmao. (,:
Simply love this. I will suppose it's a relationship with a mother and her younger self totally understandable when my mom was young she had her voice and she left us with her voice
This video touches me deeply. I relate it to a dear friend & former educator who was vibrantly instrumental in forming the ideals & artistry of my young sisters. The brunette & blonde dancers remind me of them paying homage to her. Thank you for this, I cherish it.
I wish I could meet each single one of the incredible performers and give them a big hug. Truly the most beautiful video ever made about life and death and the magical journey in between. So candid and dark. Powerful!
I'm so grateful I went to Counterpoint yesterday, I saw this band for the first time and their performance was beautiful. This song and your interpretation of it gave me shivers while reading it. Very few songs ever made me emotional, but I have to say this maybe one of the few. Cheers for an awesome song and awesome explanation.
If you can almost hear something you like, but the Auto-Tune is throwing you off too much, I strongly urge you to listen to the "Live on 89.3 The Current" version. There is still Auto-Tune, but it is completely different in nature, much less echo and delay. There is also a live version with no Auto-Tune at all from SXSW that is worth checking out.

I believe this is about an older artists being reacquainted with art and the passion behind it. And then being present blank canvases to make art with. 🤍
This is the most powerful expression of life I've ever seen. I love the way all the memories consume her at the end. It's like they are all just forces of nature, killing her in the most beautiful way possible.
Read Charles De Lint's Memory and Dream for a fantastic read of when a painter's characters do come alive. That's what the video reminded me of and it's a fabulous video, one of my favorites!
This is seriously one of the most beautiful and sad songs I've heard and the video captures those sentiments completely. I'm really glad someone recommended Polica to me because I would have really missed out.
I just can say WOW! This is so wonderfull! I can't stop listening to this! And the video is awesome! I really like te thing with the colours... Very wonderfull indeed!
It was beautiful. Life is a continuous dance. The good, and the bad, and the confused, keep moving, I saw such beauty while watching the interpretation of movement. I saw myself wondering in my own head, my many thoughts, my wants, and what i desire,.... my dreams,. Just Dance...(Life is beautiful........all of it!
I read that this video is about an aging artist who is awakened from an emotional slumber by memories of her art/muses. She gave her life to her art. She bleeds paint.
i hope u good tho.. he was aware of good music.. he`s in a better place now..
WTF?
I heard this video was about 10 year old ash Ketchum from pallet town trying to be the worlds best Pokémon master. But to each their own I guess.
I'm just building a mental picture of someone actually bleeding paint. 🤔 meh,got nothing. 😂 very cool story tho.😊
It's actually about death. She's seeing aspects of her own personality. And finally the angel at the end is surprised that she took her hand. And she tells her in a whisper if I to go then the angels in white come to take her away

When the day is done
And I lay me down
I sit alone in my lonely bed
And I think about
The day we had
And it makes me sad 'cause you're gone
When the day is done
And I lay me down
This sheet's so cold
And your space is dark
And I hear you whispering something sweet
And it doesn't move me and it knows me
When the day is done
And I lay me down
I sit alone in my lonely bed
And I think about
The day we had
And it makes me sad 'cause you're gone
After all I'm married to the wandering star
I kissed his moon
It was full and I fell in love with thee
But now, the world turns around me
Turns around me
Turns around me
Turns around me
When the day is done
And I lay me down
This sheet's so cold
And your place is dark
And I hear you whispering something sweet
And it doesn't move and it knows me
After all, I'm married to the wandering star
I kissed his moon
It was full and I fell in love with thee
But now the world turns around me
After all, I'm married to the wandering star
I kissed his moon
It was full and I fell in love with thee
But now the world turns around me
When the day is done
And I lay me down

Your comment just made me cry. What a beautiful perception.
The message: She felt tired, weak and lifeless but her art revived her and kept her going!
So god damn beautiful!
thank you for mansplaining

One of the most underrated artists of our generation!!!
Please love your parents.
They go too soon.
Help them to maintain the will to live in joy till the end.
Thank you.

really rare to see art in musicvideos..simple and well done..just great
That is some beautiful dancing. Love the use of paint, too.

As soon as I saw Eugene's coming out video, I KNEW he had to have been a part of this and I was right. How beautiful.

this video is brilliant. i love the juxtaposition of the drums and bass with her voice thru filter. those drummers are monsters. holy hell.
So beautiful and meaningful! I love that woman's face.

This video playing with the music evokes so much emotion.... wow. Amazing!
Checking this band out since they are playing a free show before the MN United soccer match tonight...I definitely want to see them live
This video touches me deeply. I relate it to a dear friend & former educator who was vibrantly instrumental in forming the ideals & artistry of my young sisters. The brunette & blonde dancers remind me of them paying homage to her. Thank you for this, I cherish it.
Beautiful song. Beautiful video.
yes you guys... i feel you... at the most basic level these are her memories. iTS a beautiful piece and an appropriate and expressive video.
Very innovative video to a great song!
this was absolutely gorgeous.
Amazing voice presentz
I'm glad you were impacted by my view of it. It's an amazing song, band and video. I hope I get to see them live too!
Oh ya, also that the movement and color complement each trait and emotion that is represented
That's one hell of a song.... :O
Love this song sooooo much! Getting your music for my kindle!
Polica still hasn't topped Give You the Ghost album, IMO. It's their best album by far.
This video just randomly popped up on my feed and listening to this track again just took me back a decade out of the blue. Damn this is nostalgic.
A wonderful song and one of the most mesmerizingly beautiful videos I've ever seen.
I wish I could meet each single one of the incredible performers and give them a big hug. Truly the most beautiful video ever made about life and death and the magical journey in between. So candid and dark. Powerful!
Thanks to the clip which filled full of art is make me satisfied to the daily needs for art.
Nothing compares to homegrown Minneapolis music
Love that art studio! Amazing video
I was there also!
This song tugs on my heart strings... in a good way .
Luv luv luv these, awesome vid from a stunning album

i have a feeling that its her at 3:13 when she was younger.
Ok I think I get it, her work came to life!!! In her room!! Where she creates!!
This is so beautiful...so amazing..so creative...
... I fell in love with thee... But now the world turns without me... I felt that...
I cried my eyes out to lost on you, I felt that
Just discovered you on The Current 89.3 tonight and I love your music!!!!!
I believe this is about an older artists being reacquainted with art and the passion behind it. And then being present blank canvases to make art with. 🤍
This is the most powerful expression of life I've ever seen. I love the way all the memories consume her at the end. It's like they are all just forces of nature, killing her in the most beautiful way possible.
song and video compliment each other beautifull composition ! polica im hooked cant wait for new stuff from you guys x

I just can say WOW! This is so wonderfull! I can't stop listening to this! And the video is awesome! I really like te thing with the colours... Very wonderfull indeed!
Saw this live last night... they were incredible! Can't wait for the new album release.
I can definitely see that too. Thanks.
I love the mood that the molody sets, and the video is very artistic.
This video is amazing... It literally makes me tear when she finally shows trust and wonder, really beautifully conveyed.
I love there music. Very far in a deep way of there own. Good stuff!! Keep it coming!!
I saw them at Eaux Claires yesterday! they put on a great set!
modern dance was the best part of my life, it's lost and in the past but it's still at my core.
COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY BY THIS...I had this idea years ago and they did it perfectly..THANKS POLICA..
