Another great and helpful video. I bought a Sonos Port from you guys after watching your videos. You quickly answered my question on the live chat, I ordered it and it was delivered the next day for free. Two minutes later and I’m playing my vinyl in all the rooms in my house through my Play 1’s. I’m only using an entry level Sony turntable with built in preamp and it sounds Brilliant.
Thanks.
This was a great comment to read, thank you so much and pleasure we could help! Many thanks.
Great info as always! Looking for ways to help my friends expand their systems and they do not go online very often. This helps a lot.
I agree. For my use it would be nice to see a “port mini” as all I want is to utilize an appleplay / smart device integrated into my current amps and ecosystem.
Very imformative and great video! Love how you gave alternatives as well! Now I just need alot of money to get a full set up!!
Thanks for this video! It answered exactly what I wanted without too much RUclips fluff. Appreciate it! So basically if I have basically only Sonos speakers, it means I don’t really need this then.
Thanks for the video guys, great production as always and explains the usage of the Port really clearly. I’ve been looking for a way to connect my turntable to my Sonos Ones and this looks like it will be the best solution as I don’t have space for a Sonos Five. The only thing you didn’t mention was that the turntable would need a built-in preamp (or separate preamp) for it to connect to the Port.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE all of your content! It is professional, well done and extremely informative! This channel is my 1st stop for audio hardware. Thanks!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
really excellent presentation and video of the value of the sonos port.
Excellent 👌, I am definitely purchasing a port now. Thanks for the information
This is my second comment since 15 years of youtubing. But I just had to write a comment.
This presentation was exactly what I was looking for and exceeded my expectations. Love the clear explanations and different cases of usage, the comparison between amp and port as well as the alternatives. No questions open from my side.
A big thump up!!! Thanks!
Love it! Thanks you for the amazing details
Would be nice for an AV equivalent to the port. To be able to plug either source or the projector/tv via earc and send sound to your sonos speakers.
Really fancy a couple of symfonisk picture speakers to work as stereo sound for a discrete home cinema set up in the living room but as of yet haven't figured out an effective way to do this.
Excellent informative content. Thanks.
We’re designing a new home that will have four stories and a lot of “zones”. We will have a dedicated listening room, a photo studio and several rooms dedicated to various purposes. I like the idea of same music everywhere, when we have a full house, but when I’m shooting, I like to use music to set the mood, while my wife likes music for her yoga workout or while she’s lying by the pool. So, is this the piece of gear we need to let us use a couple of pairs of excellent speakers, a great amp, etc. but tie it into the brilliant Sonos system. I hate to be so detailed, but you guys are the best on RUclips as far as product knowledge and installation goes.
Thank you for all the explanations.
Fantastic review
So helpful! Thank you
Excellent presentation. Quick question. I have an old school Bose speaker set which uses an AUX cable as the source for music. is this the device that I'd need to bring into the Sonos network? Is there a cord or something I'd need to purchase to make it all work?
Great video, thanks. Can you advise how I would Use Sonos Port to connect with my Samsung soundbar, which has digital audio (Toslink) and HDMI inputs, but it does not have RCA inputs. I have Sonos ceiling speakers connected to Sonos Amp but want to integrate the better sound and bass from my Samsung soundbar and sub.
Awesome job breaking this down. I have a question though, I got a Sonos Arc, Sub and 2 Play Ones and I’d like to connect them to my Denon S960H AVR which has TV and Game Console hooked up. How can I output audio through the Sonos system without having sync issues or compromising dolby effects?
Hello! Can I pass the audio signal from my turntable to other AirPlay 2 enabled devices without the Sonos app? Do not have Sonos devices so far, but stream directly via iOS from the music app or Tidal. I would like to stream the sound from my record player additionally as a multiroom device throughout the house. Thanks for the help!
Thank you! Situation 3 is what I was looking for. I just wanted to know that it was possible to add my turntable to my system without an additional sonos speaker. I just want to be able to use my turntable with my sonos beam and sub.
This was a really informative presentation. 👍. Having started to move over to a Sonos system (Beam2 and One SL) I was looking at the Port, but I only have a headphone output or
Mono Sub output on my current Yamaha N470D. I would still like the option to use both my turntable (connected to the Yamaha) and cd player (built in). I can’t imagine the headphone is the best option, but is the only stereo one without reconfiguring the system, which I am not quite ready to do. Are there potential issues I need to be aware of apart from being careful of the volume which I guess will act like a preamp. Thanks.
This is a great video. I have two Sonos 5 and I run a line in from my source can I still pair the Sonos 5 with another for stereo and perhaps the sub as well.
Could you plug some decks in for a house party or would there be to much of a delay?
This was very helpful. Quick question though re connecting a Turntable directly to Sonos 5 or the Port, you didn't mention a Pre-amp was needed and had a Rega P1 on the table which doesn't have one built in....does that mean a Pre-amp is actually not needed to go from Turntable to Port for example? my understanding was a Pre-amp is needed for all Sonos hardware but perhaps that changed with the Port? Many thanks
Nice explanation - thanks for sharing.
I have 2 Apple Homepods - can I stream to CD music from my CD Player via the Sonos Port to my Apple Homepods?
I have a complete Sonos system and then I bought a Sonos Port for my stereo to stream to the receiver. Well long story short after reading many articles and asking Sonos a time or two and getting a smoothed over comment from my salesman on all the equipment but especially the port I discovered the truth. The Port only streams CD quality music which for many is good enough. If you have a streaming service and want and pay for much higher resolutions don't get the Port it can't handle it. I bought a Blue Node and was blown away by how much the music improved. Now this isn't an ad for Blue Node others I'm sure could deliver as well but now I'm saddled with selling my Sonos Port. I wish my salesman had been north forthcoming instead of trying to "bag' the sale with me.
If I am playing CD’s through my player connected to the port, what is the streaming quality to the Sonos speakers (e.g. One’s)? Does this give full CD quality, or is it a reduced mp3 like signal?
i have a beam and sub mini. would a turntable connect to both speakers through the port
I have a Sonos bar and 2 wired boss speakers. Can I Intergrated the boss speakers to work with the Sonos connect?
Would the sonos port work with my bose L1?
I'm starting building my home sound system. For now I have symfonisk gen 2 lamps and it's nice for me for listening music. But I would like to connect it with computer, TV and console. What would you recommend for good price-quality ratio?
Can you confirm if this can connect to MDX-8/MDX-16 from anthem which power 8/16 zones speakers and sonos app will detect each of 8/16 zones separately. Each zone is one or more rooms in this setup. Thanks.
can i only use and AMP for my 2 Sonos big outdoor speakers?
I have a projector connected to AV receiver. Could I plug the port into the AV receiver in order to run my sonos soundbar with my projector?
I don't see a ground connection on the Sonos so how do you actually connect a turntable?
I guess I also need a turntable pre amp?
I have a Marantz 6015 for my theater and a need 2 more channels of amplification. Can I use a sonos amp for this?
Denon also offers BT in their Heos line!
Hi all, I have 3 Sonos play:1 speakers at home, and I am looking to use them to edit and watch videos and movies. Very few reviews talk about the usability of Sonos for videos or computer use. Will this be a solution? Also, are the Sonos Roam SL a good way to connect a laptop (and all its audio, not just music streaming) to a pre-existing Sonos system via bluetooth?
I assume the Sonos Port has no pre-amp output so to control the volume when connected to an existing audio amplifier you have to set the volume using your amplifier controls. In short can you connect the Port to a power amplifier (no pre-amp or volume control) and control the volume via the Sonos app into a non Sonos audio system?
Hi. I have an Arc connected to 2x five speakers which are used for surround sound. I have an hdmi lead to the TV. I also have a turntable connected to one of the fives via a 3.5mm jack. If I want to play my turntable I have to unpair my fives and reconnect when finished. Is there a way to play the turn table as an input without having the hassel of disconnection?
Thank you for the video. This was great. So basically if I want to connect my CDJs I can connect via 3.5 mm to RCA cable right. Or do I still need a phono amp?
You do not need a phono amp
Hi, I currently own a Sonos Amp, but I upgraded my amp to a Rotel. Do I need to also buy a Port so I can connect to other rooms which also have Sonos speakers in them, or can I use my current Sonos Amp as a Port with my new Rotel amp?
Hi, I have a Naim Nova streamer/amp. Also have a Sonus Arc and Bass Sub (3rd gen) in the same room.
Can I use the Naim system using the official Naim app to control and play music by using the Sonus Port to send the music to Sonus Arc/Sub ?
Thanks
Can the Sonos Port be used to power analog rear surround sound speakers? For example, I currently have a Sonos Beam and Sub with Bose analog rears, will the Sonos Port allow me to connect all the devices for a complete/integrated surroundsound experience?
Very Clear! Thank you for your sharing!😉
Can I use this with a Inandon karaoke system so my arc allows for mic etc with no lag?
What model of turntable is it in the video? It looks cool :)
Yo, great vid. I'm seeking a new platform since bose discontinued soundtouch. Could you plug a pioneer dj controller into the port between the powered adam audio speakers I have?
Can the sonos port or the B&W formation be used with third party speakers on wifi, such as kef or Klipsch wifi speakers?
Could you recommend a cd player to use with my somos? Currently running a Bose wave with changer into my play 5 but it just stopped working. Should I just get a new one or is there a more quality option?
Hi, your RUclips clips are really well done, thanks to you and your crew for the excellent work you do! I’m hoping you could tell me what the best application to play movies in Atmos sound through the Arc is? I’m having constant issues with playback always needing to adjust settings on my television and media application , currently using elmedia player but do you know of a better or recommended application perhaps?
Hi Toby, thanks for the comment. We mainly use Apple TV as it has a wide range of Apps and passes Atoms really well. We have also had no issues with lip sync etc. We use Apple Movies, Disney + & Netflix etc.
Hi, can you tell me if I have two speakers b&w, can I get the Sonos arc, sub, era 300 amd the Sonos amp to make a 7.1.2 system
Tried connecting the connect to my sonos 2 system. It's sayin open sonos 1, but when i do it redirects me bck to sonos 2 an i can't get connect connected! Can you help?
I have a sonos sound bar and and Pioneer SX-828 receiver. Ideally would love to be able to use this system with a port. Possible?
Can I connect my Technics SL-1210gr turntable to my Sonos system by just using the Sonos Amp? This turntable does not have a built-in preamp.
I have an analog preamp. Can I just plug my preamp into the Port Line In and select my source via my preamp? I intend to purchase a pair of ERA 300s.
Hi Jonathan! Great video...I got a question please that I cannot seem to find the answer to:
If I were to use sonamp 600w 12.0-ch. amp and connect to Sonos port, will I be able to integrate all of the speakers connected to the amp into my Sonos ecosystem? I have Arc, Sub and two S1 in one area, a play bar in another, and then trying to add the Sonance in ceiling speakers throughput my house. Will this work?
Thanks
ask sonos
Does it support karaoke setup with smart tv and Sonos speakers ?
Just a add-on from the "Bowers & Wilkins" Support, because I asked if the "Formation Audio" can stream the analog signal via Apple AirPlay: "Our Formation Audio will only send audio to Formation products and will not send audio to third party speakers."
Great video! What is the time lag between the input (I connect a dj mixer) and output (my hifi system) + wireless sinks speakers? Would to work and all be output in sync?
Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately there would be a tiny lag and would make it hard to mix.
I have LP vinil player Sony, Grande sistem also Sony and 6 speakers with subwoofer. But I don’t know how to connect them with Sonos 😳.
Please help. What to do and what to buy?
Hi..I Just installed a Sonos arc, sub, etc.. to a Samsung 82" TV..I used to have the Samsung Arc (HDMI) go to a Receiver (HDMI) where I used the receivers HDMI ports for all my connections such as Apple TV, Roku, etc... I would take that receivers' HDMI signal, and send it to a splitter with HDMI's going to other rooms in my house so I could share my various devices with those other TV's. I have since removed my receiver to go wireless with Sonos. How could I set this up my new receiver-less system with a Sonos system.. I tried different variants of trying to get this signal from the Arc to the splitter but no luck..help! Thanks!
How to connect Sonos amp with ARC system ?
With the Port, how exactly is music from, for example, Amazon music being streamed to the port? Is it built into the port and I access it from the Sonos app? I’ve been told by some retailers that this does not have bluetooth, and some retailers say it does. Can you confirm if it does or not?
For existing receivers/amps with wired speakers, can you control volume through the Sonos Port?
That's what I'm wondering...there's no IR out, but curious if there is an IR blaster built into the front. I would need to be able to switch my receiver to the correct input as well. Any clue if this is possible without additional gear?
Ive got the Sonance Garden Series 6.1. I want to add 2 more speakers to it but was told it would overload the sonos amp and id need to buy another amp. I only want to add 2 more speakers. Is there anyway to add speakers without having to buy another $650 sonos amp
I got a touchtunes jukebox with its own amp and speakers. The owner bought one of these Sonos amps and put in ceiling speakers and I’m having trouble getting the background music to play off the jukebox. I have an override box so that the jukebox when played will take priority then convert back to the background music when song is finished. Do I need one of these? I need a signal from his Sonos system to plug into my Aux I/o for my jukebox. I want the jukebox to have control not the Sonos.
Can I switch off the sound from SONOS Five and use it as a SONOS Port? Other Analog - Digital Converter have a ground connection. I'm missing this on the SONOS devices somehow. Why it is not important there?
Great video!! I have a question though, I don't exactly have a HiFi system but I have a Bose L1 tower speaker that I want to join to my Sonos ecosystem, would it work? Thanks man
Hi there, thanks for watching. I've had a look at that speaker and it has both an RCA input and 3.5mm jack so you can use either of these ports and connect up a Sonos Port to the speaker. Please note, this is advertised as a PA speaker so I would not recommend playing live content like DJ mixes or wireless instruments through the Port as there may be a delay. I hope that helps!
Great Video, no chance for a port mini though! Sonos love people having to buy the most expensive items to resolve minor things... Otherwise why isn't there a line in on all of their products? they could do that very easily surely??
Hi can you use a mic with sonos system
I have a record player with a built in preamp in one room and was wondering if I could connect it to the Port and stream wirelessly to my AVR that has Airplay 2 in another room? Or would I only be able to stream wirelessly to my Sonos speakers? I don't want to clutter up my TV stand area with my record player and was hoping to find a way to play it through my home theater system while in a different room
Hi there, yes unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to send the audio over Airplay 2. It would be possible to connect the port to your AVR via the line out and then then the turntable to the ports line in. This way you could play the turntable audio on your AVR and also send the audio to your other Sonos speaker. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🏻
Hi, if I add the Port to my Pair of KEF LSX do I still get the full benefit of my Tidal HiFi subscription if I Stream via the Sonos App ?
Hello Phillipp, currently Sonos supports up to a maximum of CD quality which would equate to a standard music subscription (not HiFi). It may be something that Sonos adds as a software update in the future if there is enough demand for it.
Have you ever attempted to use a Sonos Playbar as your iMacs external speakers connected via optical digital? It does not work!
Hi, I have KEF LSX. With Port, can it be integrated into Sonos 5.1ch soundsystem if I use it with Sonos Arc and Sub? I am wondering if I can integrate LSX into Sonos ecosystem by replacing Sonos One.
Don’t think that it possible, rears need to be “bonded” to the Soundbar
I've got a couple of Google Home Max, quite decent speakers and would love to integrate them into my SONOS ecosystem, they only got 3.5mm input, is the port able to add 2 speakers? (Google Home Max doesn't need amp, they got it built-in)
You would need an rca to 3.5mm and connect it to the primary google home max. It can then wirelessly sync to the other channel. These would likely be out of sync with everything else as it has additional latency.
Does it support Apple Lossless audio?
Apologies if his has already been answered, but if I have already have one sonos speaker on its own and another audio system that had two regular speakers connected to a turntable, will I be able to have the turntable play on the solo sonos speaker? With the Port of course.
Hi there, yes that's absolutely possible and the benefit of the Sonos Port. This will act as a gateway to your other Sonos speakers so if you ever decide to expand your Sonos system, you can send the turntable audio to those too.
Can you tell me if having the Port being connected to the network directly with an ethernet cable is optimal for quality reasons within the music or is it just simply based on limiting/eliminating dropping the wireless signal? Thanks.
Yes it will be purely for connectivity reasons and it won’t effect the audio quality wired or wireless.
It really only has a single stereo input which makes it very limited. If you had a CD player and a record deck it would be difficult to connect both. So that would mean you would need to buy a seperate Port to enable more than one stereo device to input in the Sonos network.
That's exactly what Sonos would like you to do
Great video and couldn’t agree more with your “Port Mini” suggestion.
At the very least will the port allow me to add my Google maxes to the sonos app
Can you attach a stereo receiver to the port (input connections) and play all of the components (tape deck, cd player, fm radio, turntable) on your sonos speakers? I understood you connect only one component (cd or turntable). If I were to spend $450 I would want my entire stereo to be able to play to all the sonos speakers on my sonos network.
Hi there, yes whatever audio source you input into the Port can be sent to any Sonos speaker in your system.
Nice job as always. What dose the sonos boost do?
Hi John, the Boost is only required if your WiFi cannot be relied upon wirelessly and it won't be practical to connect at least one Sonos product directly to your router via ethernet. By doing this, you'll launch Sonosnet and put all of your speakers on their own wireless mesh so will enhance the reliability of your Sonos speakers maintaining connection on your network.
@@smarthomesounds thank you
You really do a good job. I appreciate it
Hi I have a Sonos connect and hifi with turntable, if i steam turntable to another room I can hear an audio delay but can’t turn this off within the Sonos app for the connect can audio delay be turn off for the port within the app? My living room and kitchen are next to each other so when listening records in both rooms the delay is noticeable.
I have similar setup. To avoid audio delay, connect the turntable to the Sonos Connect and hifi amp simultaneously with an Y cable. Also connect the line-out on the Sonos Connect to your amp. When playing multiroom, on your hifi amp, always use the line in from the Connect instead of directly playing from the turntable. By doing this you will have synchronised audio in all Sonos zones.
@@davidsandin9769 thanks I’ll get a Y cable and give that a try
Wow.. amazing.
can I use this (or a Sonos 5) to connect my computer and use Sonos as my PC speakers?
Yes that would be possible with that set-up. Hope this helps.
@@smarthomesounds I'm looking to do this too, my first choice was use a beam and port to sit under a 49" super ultrawide, but I'm now thinking as they have line in, to buy 2 5's , at 8" in hight it could still be doable, the monitor would be higher than I'm used to but not by a crazy amount if I get it to sit on the speaker. What would you guys do for a PC Sonos speaker set up?
Instead of using a Sonos Port to connect a turntable to your Sonos system, you could use a Sonos Roam via Bluetooth (if the turntable has bluetooth like the ProJect Essential III Bluetooth).
Thanks for the comment. This is true and we did mention this on our previous Roam video and can’t wait to test it out in our hands on Sonos Roam review. Hopefully it could be a more cost effective way if you have a Bluetooth turntable.
Would the port also work if I am using a projector and want to put the sonos beam in front of me instead of behind me (it is currently behind me because the beam needs to be plugged into it)? So if I use the port and attach it to the projector, would it be able to connect to the beam and surrounding speakers?
Hi Corie, I wouldn't recommend this as the Port only outputs in 2-channel stereo so would make your surround speakers obsolete. You may want to look into running an extended cable from the projector to the Beam. Hope this helps!
@@smarthomesounds Thank you so much :) drat, I was trying to avoid this, but it seems like the best option haha
well done
I don't yet own any Sonos, I can't find a clear answer: Can one use: sonos arc plugged into TV eARC, + 2 One SL for rears + 1 One SL for center channel in case I need to get clearer dialogs, where I could move that one SL very close to me. Basically: Does the s2 app allow to assign channels to whatever speaker you want? and if I can assign center channel to a One SL, does the center channel from the sound bar sonos arc then lose its center channel or does it remain?
You can’t make a One SL into a centre channel like you’ve mentioned. The only additions you can make with the Arc or Beam is adding the two rears and/or the Sonos Sub.
@@Mikedimmy thx, that sucks.
Would pc (games) work with the Port ?
No, there's a delay
Could you use this to control a zone 2 on a Denon receiver for outdoor speakers?
Probably late here but yes you can!
Will the port allow me add my sonos surround (arc,sub,2ones)to a Google speaker group, in Google home? I definitely prefer casting straight from RUclips instead of that excuse sonos calls RUclips
Seems like the Era 100 has this feature too
How can I set up karaoke w my sonos system.
Hi Craig, while it is possible, it will result in a fairly noticeable delay between actually singing and hearing the sound out of the speakers which won't be ideal. I'd recommend a more traditional amplifier set up or dedicated karaoke set up for any live inputs where the delay can be reduced. I hope that helps!
Thinking of getting a sonos system with ceiling speakers when I extend my house in the summer
Hi Ricki - sounds like a great plan! You'll need the Sonos Amp if you're looking to drive ceiling speakers using the Sonos system. We've done a separate review of that on our RUclips channel. Let us know if we can offer any help with the plan. In the meantime, all the best with the extension!
I've got three pairs of Sonos gen 1 speakers which have been made obsolete by Sonos. Think about that before you cut holes in your ceiling. They might turn into air vents a couple of years down the line.
This is a good video. I have always been puzzled by the high price of both the Amp and the Port, given that they are actually not speakers at all, just Wi-Fi connectors. They do not strike me as good value.
The amp is an amplifier. You’re paying mostly for the amplification
@@Ryan-go9wc Did U mean the Port has an amp in it?
