    Installed it myself without any issues. The wifi signal is great even ruclips.net/user/postUgkxE_D_sddGAdiVUKp7PkkmyxO7bRtgqmk5 when the router is located far away. I really enjoy the night vision feature that allows me to see clearly any activity near our house (mostly cars and wild animals). The motion detection is helpful to me as well to monitor what happens on our front.

    Don’t like that you photoshopped a “Upgrade to Matter” pop up into the home app and didn’t even mention that this is NOT an option or something offered by Apple. If you want to illustrate a point, don’t make it look feasible only for people to struggle to get the pop up they can’t get.

    Matter for me is less about using multiple voice assistants, and more that I can stop using multiple hubs.
    I've got a Tradfri hub which controls a few smart blinds and lights, and also connects to two Hue bulbs that I was given for free. I can control my IKEA smart hardware through Homekit, but I can't connect to the Hue bulbs (I can through the IKEA Smart Home 1 app).
    If I want to control the Hue bulbs via Komekit, I need a Hue hub.
    I've also just bought an Aqara hub so that I can setup a blind roller blind shutter and water sensor.
    I've got the Apple TV 4k as my main device.
    My question is when everything moves to Matter, will I be able to use the ATV4k as my single hub throughout the house?
    (I've also got a 2016 Nest Thermostat, but I haven't seen anywhere that this is going to be updated to Matter?)

    • @ru2225
      @ru2225 Год назад

      Doubt it'll be updated, 2016 is quite old. Google doesn't have that great history of software support.

    • @derek400004
      @derek400004 Год назад +3

      you'll probably need to replace your nest thermostat because Matter wasn't even a thing back in 2016, but Hue hub and Apple TV 4k (the latest one with A15 chip) already confirmed will gain Matter hub functionality.

    I've only just started to build/expand my smart home using Apple HomeKit. For the last 2-3 yrs, I've only had a Logi Circle 2 camera on my front porch due to a few packages being stolen. Back then I was only using Apple Home and not HomeKit but eventually updated to HomeKit about a year ago. I also have a few Hue lightbulbs but they were on the 1st gen bridge that did not work with Apple Home. I eventually upgraded to a newer Hue bridge and added those lights to Home. I replaced the Circle camera with a Logi Circle DoorBell and moved the Circle 2 camera to the backyard. More recently I've added some Meross smart devices like the garage door opener, smart light switch, and smart plug. I have a strong mesh network consisting of 3 Apple Airport Extremes, so looks like Matter isn't really gonna be a huge difference for me in the foreseeable future.

    We have Apple and Amazon devices in our house. The Apple Home supports Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread. Amazon Home supports matter over Wi-Fi, but not Thread. I have one Matter device, which uses Thread. Currently there is negative benefit in using Matter devices just for Apple Home use. And most will have to wait until 2023 for Amazon to even support Thread.

For example some of the very first lightbulbs that worked in HomeKit even before adaptive lighting will they work on Matter if I upgrade the home app? I don’t want to go out an purchase a ton of new accessories. I worry that when they do add cameras to Matter these expensive LogiCircle cams wont work. I refuse to go out and buy new cameras. I have the Nanoleaf bulbs with Thread but they can’t be upgraded to Matter if I upgrade the home app do the bulbs become useless in the home app?

      At this point your best bet is Homebridge. I run Homebridge running in a container on a on a Synology NAS to control a Nest thermostat, two Ring doorbells, and a Chamberlain garage door opener via HomeKit. It works very well. To my knowledge Google has not committed to allowing Nest Learning Thermostats to support Matter, it may never do so (I’ve not figured out the logic behind this). If you’re interested, you may want to buy a HOOBS Homebridge Hub to access those devices through HomeKit. It is much easier to use than my setup, but I already owned the server so I didn’t need the hub.

    • @RobertGaron

      😎 I’m running a Starling hub for my Google devices to show up on Apple Home and it’s the cheapest option, works the fastest, and have had zero issues. It’s so much easier than Homebridge, or any other solution at this point. Ecobee already connects with my Apple home by default and I’ve just been purchasing things that are HomeKit native smart devices and they have been coming out with really good ones this year. ✌️

    Ethernet and Wi-fi are the same thing in terms of protocol. The only difference is that Wi-Fi works over the air via radios and Ethernet works over wires. You can have a mix of wired and wireless in the home. You don't have to choose one or the other. Can I make a suggestion? Can you pronounce the "h" in "home" and "HomeKit"? You drop the "h" and say "ohm". You tend to fully say "HomeKit" and not "OhmKit", but you said "OhmPass". I've seen at least one comment in one of your videos asking what you were talking about.

    This is a good video on a confusing topic. I really hope both apple and third parties will continue to relatively rapidly refine their offerings. Right now it’s a mess. Only some Eve devices, for example, have Thread support. And some Eufy cameras, even of the same model, can only be set up with the Eufy app while others have native support for the Home app. Using only the Home app often means a loss of features and/or spotty reliability. It’s a relative geek fest compared to most anything else Apple.
