    Those stunts with the helicopter were absolutely real. Don't quote me on this, but my understanding is that they couldn't get any of the camera guys to agree to shoot the stunt, so James Cameron ran the camera himself when the helicopter flies under the bridge.

    • @RiffingReligion
      @RiffingReligion 2 года назад +20

      I've read the exact same thing. They flew a real helicopter under a real bridge. No CGI. The stunt was so dangerous that the camera crew refused to film it, saying they didn't want to film an actual human death. So Jim Cameron manned the camera himself for that stunt. Oh, and, Go Pokes!

      Yeah, they tried to figure out how to do it but scale models would look fake and putting the helicopter on a flatbed or sled and pulling it along would mean they couldn't film the entire helicopter so they asked the pilot if it was possible and he reckoned he could do it.

      this is my favorite comment on this whole shit. I say that all the time and no one ever understands what I’m saying, and it’s with, and without Dyson both terminator fail and succeeded.
      and the fact of once he becomes aware of his actions in the future, he doesn’t take one second to think about what he would do to save his family and give his own life, and that goes to humanity as well.

    The reason it's called a "minigun" is because it's a portable/scaled down or "mini" version of the much larger M61 Vulcan cannon, which is normally found on an F-18 Hornet, F-16 Falcon, F-15 Eagle and several other fixed-wing aircraft.

    • @notsureyou
      @notsureyou 2 года назад +1

      Fun fact the M61 vulcan uses a round based on 15mm German mg 151 ;-)
      "During World War II the US Army produced the .60-caliber T17, a reverse-engineered copy of the German MG151 chambered for an experimental anti-tank rifle round"
      "the .60-caliber cartridge was repurposed as an auto-cannon cartridge to succeed the older .50 Browning. The ammunition and the T17 cannon were produced from 1942 to 1946 but never proved a substantial improvement over the .50 Browning and the M2HB and M3 heavy machineguns. The cartridge was later shortened and necked-up to produce the 20x102mm Vulcan autocannon round."

    The Helicopter was actually filmed going under the bridge, but it was on a gimbal machine trailer that had the length of the blades on top with a beam of wood where the propellers would be but had removed the blades keeping the main rotor in tact being able to spin so the blades where done digitally.

    The one thing that truly pulls on my heart strings in this movie is the scene where John, Sarah, Terminator are fleeing mental hospital in the car after evading liquid terminator. Sarah motions to John for what looks like a motherly embrace but all she wanted to do is examine him for injuries. John was crestfallen. He was expecting a motherly embrace with affection. It was a gut punch for him.

    Robert Patrick, who played the T-1000, got so into character actually turned his body to liquid metal to phase through the bars in the asylum sequence. Just kidding but he did learn to fire a gun without blinking because a machine wouldn't blink when shooting.

    I've always looked at it like this. Skynet and the terminators were made by a different process / organization and probably took longer, sending the terminator back to be found allowed Cyberdine to accelerate the timeline for creating Skynet.

    I was living in Fremont, CA when they filmed this movie. The building they blew up when Dyson died was across the freeway from where I worked. It was scheduled for demolition and James Cameron paid them to let him blow it up.

      This is partially true. I live in Fremont and recently visited this location. An employee gave me a little info which was confirmed by IMDB....."The Cyberdyne building in the movie is in fact a two-story structure in Fremont, California. A phony third floor was constructed on top for the movie. Much of the structure was rebuilt after the filming, and the building exists to this day."

      The steel mill was also a real steel mill, albeit one of that wasn't in use anymore by the time of the movie. The "molten steel" in it is actually water with orange coloring and internal lightning (real molten steel isn't nearly so splashy lol)

  • @Cbricklyne

    Yes, the movie has a MASSIVE bootstrap paradox (two, actually).
    The Skynet one you figured out on your own, even though the solution for that one is simply that humanity would eventually have created Skynet - or "a" Skynet-like Artificial intelligence system, that would eventually evolve into the machine that destroys humanity.
    The chip from the first terminator just accelerated the process (even though it's a bootstrap paradox).
    The BIGGER and worse Bootstrap paradox is the one they can't solve for with any story solution which is that if they succeeded in their current mission in stopping the creation of Skynet (and the murder of John or his mom), then by virtue of that, John Connor wouldn't exist at all to begin with, since the only reason he exists is because his future self sends back Kyle Reese, the person who becomes his father in the past, through the time displacement field (time machine) created by.......you guessed it.......Skynet.
    (Bear in mind also that Kyle Reese in the future is considerably younger than John (by about 20 years).
    He's in his mid-20's while John is a middle-aged (mid 40's year old) man at the time he's sending him back.
    Put a pin in that since it becomes important later on in this paradox.)
    If Skynet doesn't exist, then neither does the time displacement field generator, and if that doesn't exist then Kyle Reese isn't sent back to the past and John Connor isn't conceived or born (which in turn means he doesn't send Kyle Reese back and on and on and on....).
    And no, Sarah Connor doesn't meet Kyle Reese at any point in her future to be able to conceive John anyway, because he's not born until later and grows into, and past puberty until long after she's presumably gone through menopause, and can't have children anymore (hence the reason why I pointed out that Kyle is much younger than John. In real time terms, Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor have the age distribution of grandmother-grandson. Assuming she's in her 20's when she has John and John is in his mid-40's when he sends Kyle back, then at that same time Sarah Connor - if she's still alive - is in her 60's. At best she's in her 50's when he hits puberty, and either way probably too old to conceive and have a child in real time terms).
    In other words, even if she's somehow able to meet (a baby or child) Kyle Reese later on in her life, it will likely be when she's too old to have children anymore, and John essentially never exists at all if Skynet is never created (in order to create the time machine that allows him to send his father back in time to ensure he's born).
    And thus completes the circle.

    • @MacLeeland
      @MacLeeland 2 года назад

      There must have been a "Terminator 0" where humanity lost the war and sent back Kylie Reese to stop Skynet before it was created, and he meets this random waitress who he gets together with and then fails his mission. The waitress becomes pregnant by him and knowing the future raises the son to become a leader for human resistence.

    25:13 in actually fact, terminator does NOT kill ANYONE throughout the entire movie…wound and injures or incapacitates quite a few, but doesn’t KILL…
    this was due to the high security of the film’s production and trying to keep the twist about Arnold being the good guy a secret (this was well before mobile phones and before the internet…) but since the sets were all closed and the reaction to the first film, the fact the media was being blocked from knowing anything at all really, they went with the assumption that this film was going to be an even bigger gorefest than the first, so there was a shot made for the trailer to negate this bad press, of Arnold on the motorcycle doing the “I swear I will not kill anyone” scene, but by himself…

    The scene where Dyson with his wife and children reveals him as a loving husband and a good father, as a person who just wanted to make the world a better place and would never have thought that his work, at the behest of the military, would turn into another weapon. This "meet the pilot" line always gives me goosebumps and some kind of sadness. All his dreams collapsed the moment he realized where the damaged chip and hand had actually come from.

    *Follow up comment:*
    Oh hey, the scene where *John* is saying _"you can't kill people"_ and the *Terminator* is just asking _"why?"_ again and again (18:45) reminded me of a tip I wanted to give you guys that I was given by a kindergarten teacher when my daughter was a baby...
    Try to avoid telling you're child _"No"_ when they ask you a question. Instead, explain to them them *_why not_* right up front. Not only is it good for them developmentally, but you won't get hit with the incessant "why not?" to where you end up saying _"because"_ over and over.¹
    When you explain to them *_why not_* instead of saying only _"No,"_ the conversation usually ends right there.
    Truly, it's been some of the best advice I have ever gotten as a parent. And now my daughter is co-founder of *Magpie Games.* They just broke the *Kickstarter* record raising the most amount of money in the shortest amount of time for the officially licensed *Avatar The Last Airbender* and *The Legend of Korra* tabletop role-playing game!
    😊Yes, I'm beaming with pride! ☺️
    *AGAIN, FANTASTIC REACTION! ONE OF THE BEST!*
    ··•∶🖤∶•··
    ¹ ─ And *you* certainly wouldn't want someone to simply say, _"Because,"_ when answering *your* question of _"Why?"_ 😎

    Arnold is AUSTRIAN. So yes, his native language is one form of German, but a somewhat rural dialect. He actually offered to redub himself in the German version of the movie, but they turned him down, because the Terminator would then sound like the equivalent of a hillbilly.

    The dog's collar read: "Max" .
    He realized he had been outsmarted and busted with that whole "Wolfie" ploy. I guess that still doesn't explain the canicide, as machines don't feel anger or the need for payback.
    They did, no less, make a point of showing the dog's name-tag. Go figure.
    I just rewatched it. I think he killed the dog to simplify being able to get a good look at the collar to check the name and see if he had been discovered. Now he knows that John is on to him and won't be coming home for that beef stew supper.

  • @ultimagameboy

    The helicopter unter the bridge was done for real. In fact, if I recall correctly, there was a major issue on set where I think the main stunt co-ordinator and / or some of the stunt team refused to do it and tried to tell Cameron that it was simply too dangerous to pull off. And also the bit where Arnold climbs onto the moving tanker to shoot the T-1000 through the windshield, that was also done for real, too. All the stunts and special FX in this film were totally groundbreaking at the time, and still hold up even today. This film truly is one of the greatest sci-fi action flicks ever made.

    You actually can own a minigun as long as you're in a state that doesn't have a machine gun ban, there were some that made it onto the civilian market before the 1986 cut-off (including the one in the film). Finding someone who is _selling_ a minigun is a whole other matter. The gun in the film is the same one that was used in Predator with the front grip altered, and is modified to shoot a lot slower than normal (about 1,200 RPM rather than 3,000-6,000), which was a combination of making the recoil bearable and because the director of Predator wanted the barrels to visibly turn (normally a minigun's barrels turn faster than a movie camera shoots frames).
