      They truly are! I remember as a 10 year old gal, I watched that scene unravel before my eyes, and I'd received NO warning whatsoever because my idiot father had apparently forgotten to warn me about it! Needless to say, it ruined the movie for me, and I avoided it for years because of how much that scene traumatized me.

    13:44, This scene for me is why Indy is so beloved as an adventure movie icon. He doesn't have superpowers. He isn't some special forces operator. He is a regular guy who just lost the woman he loved. This is such a low point for him that he doesn't even care about the mission anymore.
    Marion is dead and he doesn't know what to do with himself. Sallah's kids not only saved him from Belloq and the thugs in the restaurant. They saved Indy from himself. With the reminder of Salleh's friendship Indy found the will to keep on fighting.

    12:47, originally Indy and this swordsman were supposed to have a seriously involved fight. However, on this day of location filming, Harrison Ford was seriously ill with an intestinal issue that kept him running to the bathroom. Ford didn't feel physically up to filming such a long drawn out duel, so he asked Spielberg "Can't I just sh00t the guy". They liked the idea and that became this hilarious scene.

    Because you talked so much about the who would eat the poisoned date that the monkey eventually ate, you missed the important dialog about why the Nazi's were digging in the wrong place. It is because the true headpiece had data on both sides, but the Nazi who got the image burned into his hand only had the image of one side and missed the "correction".

    In the Jewish bible, YHVH gave the Israelites a series of commandments and instructions for building an Ark so that he may dwell amongst them. He would sit in the Mercy Seat on the cover of the Ark between the two sculpted Keruvim (English Cherubs). These keruvim had wings and were, if Babylonian culture is something to go by, lions with human bearded heads. The word “keruv” in Hebrew means “near”. This was a connection between YHVH and his people. At one point, two Israelites touch the Ark and become fried.

    I'll do my best to offer a few explanatory notes about the ark. The first and most important thing to know is: It was never a "super-weapon".
    In the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant was meant to carry and preserve several artifacts from the desert journeys of the Israelites, including the tablets of the Ten Commandments. It also served a locus for the presence of the God of Israel, an object whereby He promised to travel with his people in a somewhat tangible way. Most of the time, it stayed in their Tabernacle (tent of worship), and later in the Temple after it was built. While they were still wandering, it was carried by the Levites.
    Sometimes, when God commanded them to do so, the Israelites would carry the ark into battle. That was meant to signify, both to them and to their enemies, that God Himself was going to fight with them. The ark had no power of its own -- rather, it represented God being present with His people in battle, and fighting on their behalf. And in those cases, God did perform awesome acts of power through the ark; one of the most famous examples was the siege of Jericho, Israel's first major victory in the promised land.
    However, Israel had to use the ark only as God directed. Occasionally, they fell into the trap of thinking that God was tied to the ark, and that they could manipulate Him into fighting for them by simply carrying it with them. When they did, He found it necessary to correct them -- in one such instance, He allowed the Israelites to lose a battle, and let the ark fall into enemy hands.
    So in this story, Hitler and the Nazis made a serious error by thinking the ark was some kind of weapon, which they could use however they pleased; Belloq calling it a "transmitter" or "radio" wasn't much better. In the scene on board the sub, you saw how the Nazi insignia was burned off the crate that held the ark. I see that as a warning sign from God that He wasn't on their side, and He wasn't about to let it be used to fight their battles. But they didn't pay attention, and dared to try looking into the ark (another mistake that the Israelites once made). That's why God sent those spirits (I think they're supposed to be angels), and destroyed all of them. Only Indy and Marion were spared, because they showed God the due deference, and refused to join the Nazis in looking into the ark.
    I hope this explanation makes some sense.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino Месяц назад +1

      I don’t think they were completely wrong in considering it a sort of super weapon, though it was more of a representation.
      I agree that the Nazis’ really big mistake seems to be that they thought it was something that anyone could use, just because they possessed it. Well, something they certainly aren’t noted to have been is in any short supply of is hubris.

    • @paramitch
      @paramitch Месяц назад +4

      Great explanation. I would also add that the Ark represents something too holy for mortals to gaze upon -- the Nazis dared to look into it, and like Lot's wife (who looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt) they paid the price.

    I think the "i was a child" was more of a dramatic thing. If it had been 10 years, and we are going on the actress's age, she would have been like 19/20 and Indy would have been 28.

    • @dorisbove2210
      @dorisbove2210 Месяц назад

    Hello Justin & Jane!😊 What! Neither of you guys have seen this? Have you guys been living in a Canadian cave? Wait, are there caves in Canada? Never mind, just kidding.😉Good prediction about the burnt hand, Justin.😉 This film was in the style of the old action serials they used to show in theaters. So, the way it is dated is actually intentional, even for the 80s. These were in theaters until the 1950s. They would show one chapter each week in the theater, usually with a cliffhanger so you would come back. Great reactions to this classic film, See Jane Go Team!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

    Great reaction. On the matter of the fly. At this time film was actual film and professional actors would not "waste" film by messing up because it was expensive and mistakes could affect the cost of production. A key component in actual film is silver, hence the "silver screen". This is also why you don't get blooper prior to digital recording because actors tried so hard not to waste film. With digital recording is unlimited so actors messing up isn't looked down upon. Just a bit of trivia. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

    The ending's probably simpler than you think. The Ark brings victory to those who carry in battle but only if you're on God's team. The Nazi's are evil and therefore offensive to God so instead of victory they incur God's wrath by possessing the Ark and are killed.

    The Big Bang Theory has a funny bit about this movie. Sheldon loves it and show it to Amy. When asked if she liked it, she said, " it was good except for the major plot problem." They argue but the gist is Indy doesn't affect the outcome at all. If he didn't go after the ark the Nazis would have gotten the medallion, dug in the right spot, got the ark. They were going to that place on the island to "test it" for the Führer. Except for killing a few people and burning down Marion's bar he didn't do much. Even at the end he was supposed to get it to a museum instead it ended up in a "Warehouse 13" (awesome tv show btw) type of place.
    You were wondering if you were watching the first movie. Each movie is a stand-alone film. The second movie does happen chronologically before the first. The rest goes in order. There is a young Indy tv show. I never watched it.

    *Transcript of brain storming session with Lucas, Spielberg, and the writer:*
    Lawrence Kasdan: I like it if they already had a relationship at one point. Because then you don't have to build it.
    George Lucas: I was thinking that this old guy could have been his mentor. He could have known this little girl when she was just a kid. Had an affair with her when she was eleven.
    Kasdan: And he was forty-two.
    Lucas: He hasn't seen her in twelve years. Now she's twenty-two. It's a real strange relationship.
    Spielberg: She had better be older than twenty-two.
    Lucas: He's thirty-five, and he knew her ten years ago when he was twenty-five and she was only twelve.
    Lucas: It would be amusing to make her slightly young at the time.
    Spielberg: And promiscuous. She came onto him.
    Lucas: Fifteen is right on the edge. I know it's an outrageous idea, but it is interesting. Once she's sixteen or seventeen it's not interesting anymore. But if she was fifteen and he was twenty-five and they actually had an affair the last time they met. And she was madly in love with him and he...
    Spielberg: She has pictures of him.

    It is the ark of the covenant, the Hebrews carried it before them into battle. God went before them appearing as a pillar like cloud during the day, the color of fire play at night. It was to house the spirit of God to go with them. Later when the Hebrews built a tabernacle for God. The ark was placed in the holiest of holies within the Tabernacle. As writers do mini artistic liberties were took.

    Do some research and read the Bible (Old Testament) and what the Ark of the Covenant was. Back in the day, everyone understood where it came from and what it was all about.

    Indiana and Marion are ten years apart. He was in college and she was a minor. I understand that they love each other, and yet their circumstances raise some red flags.
    "I was a child! I was in love! It was wrong and you knew it."
    "You knew what you were doing." 🚩🚩
    "FBI! OPEN UP!"

      Marian was about 16 when she got involved with Indiana (about 26 years old). Back in the 20's, girls of that age were getting married and having kids.
      Indiana Jones was neither a pedophile nor a child molester nor a creep.

      @@Stogie2112 Actually, Marion was 15. Also, in a scrapped script she was supposed to be as young as 12.

      I heard an audio clip where Spielberg and Lucas discussed but more info about them in the movie but decided against it.

    The more I see and enjoy your guys’ reactions I can’t but think that maybe Jane is autistic in some way? Anyway excuse my ignorance, you both are great haha I just see Jane over react to some things quite a lot which makes it funny cus she really is immersed and the way she calls out for Justin/JV, so cute ☺️ lol

    If Indy just stayed home, the result would have beeen the same.

    This movie is a lot of fun, but something that ruins the movie: Indiana Jones doesn’t add anything to the movie. If you take him out the story doesn’t change at all
