It doesn't surprise me that you don't see a big difference in normal lighting conditions. The OP2, which I own as well as the OP3, was or is very good for what it can do and is intended for. The OP3 certainly impresses in your evening shots compared to the OP2! The operation with the bigger screen is much better than the OP2. Thanks for the very good comparison video!

I actually would be ok if the 3 match the 2 in detail during the day but that doesn't seem to be the case. It is however clearly better at night. I hope it's a firmware issue.

The low-light on the OP3 looked a little "processed" to me, but definitely better than the OP2. I have very seldom used mine for low-light ... I get better results with my everyday Sony aps-c --- better glass I suspect. Of course I'm looking at this comparison on my pc monitor, probably that skews the results a lot also. I think the OP3 is a great offering from DJI.

I see what you mean! But you have to watch the video in 4K. At first I thought it might be color granding. But the differences are really very small. Of course, the OP2 also has advantages: the larger number of pixels allows you to zoom without much loss, but with the OP3 you can only do that with a real loss of resolution! Keep both!@@PicturesofNewYork

I agree that the depth of field is causing some of the differences but if you look at the screen grabs in the video, the close-ups details are not as good. Also, there is a comparison using single focus where I focused on the far away object and while the 3 came closer to the 2, it was still a bit worse.

Your title is a bit aggressive because the OP3 is a great camera but, as you show it in your video, to certain extend... I think your statement is correct. In bright day light OP2 shows pictures with more information and less contrast, and I am not sure if it is only because of subject separation and bokeh. It looks to me OP3 goes heavier on noise reduction, loosing therefore lots of details. One may say that too sharp is not cinematic, but this has never been a real problem as a it can be managed. One can just add a mist filter to make it look more cinematic and you're done. But, if your shot is altered by software noise reduction right off the camera, then there is nothing left you can adjust, whatever filter or post production adjustment you may try. I initially thought about upgrading, from OP2 to OP3 but... An even larger sensor would still be better for night shots. And having already a GH5s and a S5ii, I rather keep my OP2. Of course this is just my situation, but I will always recommend using a larger sensor for night shots. In my opinion the OP3, as an upgrade, does not seem to offer that more of a value for its price current price range. I found the OP3 damn way too expensive for this Sensor size/One lens only/Gimbal combination. In fact, the biggest problem I had with my OP2 was actually... stabilisation. It may sound odd knowing it is a gimbal based camera in the first place. But when you walk, even with the improved OP3 as it seems like, we are just not there yet and I am tired to moonwalk over long distances just to compensate the gimbal's limitations. I rather have an organic shake than an 'almost' stable footage on a walk. I think I will wait for my dream DJI Pocket 4: It should have a M43 sensor (DJI has one already on its latest drone), placed on a mini Z arm with floor to camera distance sensor, just like on the DJI Ronin 4D. The Osmo Pocket should be able to absorb shake from walking normally and create stunning linear moves with real cinematic look. Of course the challenge will be to keep it reasonably light weighted and almost pocket sized (oops). But hey, DJI has proven its capability to get us to the next level. When this camera will come out, then yes, I will pay the extra dollars. So for now, may take is: be patient and don't let the "New IPhone" syndrome kill your wallet.

OP3 looks much cleaner, but sometimes out of focus. OP2 is oversharpened. You can set sharpness to +2 on OP3 with new firmware (P.S. watched on 43" 4K display)

Yes, the focus on the 3 seems off. It's more about detail and not sharpness. I can manually sharpen the OP3 in post but that doesn't solve the problem that it has less detail in the first place so that's very disappointing.

A serious comparison would have to be made under laboratory conditions. A walk through the streets is not particularly well suited to prove your provocative thesis. The two cameras are different in many ways and react differently.
In most clips I see barely any difference regarding detail/sharpness, in some the Pocket 3 seems to perform a tiny bit better, in some clips it's the Pocket 2. In any case, the differences are barely noticeable.
On the Pocket 3, you can adjust sharpness and noise reduction, set sharpness to 1 and noise reduction to -1, and repeat the comparison in good light - the results will most likely be different. For me the Pocket 3 performs best with these settings (I have both cameras).

I personally think the OP2 looks way to sharp and digital/fake while the OP3 is going for a softer and more colorful and cinematic look. I think the softer OP3 footage looks way more pleasing to the eye. Everything is way to sharp and detailed in the OP2 footage and there's no sense of depth, everything is in focus. Not a bad camera at all, the OP2 has been my favorite camera since I got it and Ive been waiting for the OP3. I think I will now use OP2 for b-roll/timelapses and OP3 for main footage and different b-roll shots like the 360 tunnel shot and things in low light.

I’m heavy user of OP2 too. 60 fps in the Pocket 2 has much worse codec quality than at the 30/24 fps, try to compare both at 24fps (low light will be much better then on both too). OP3 has big sensor in situation where it don't have any aperture (2 -3 step will be enough), it was not great idea. What I see, OP3 is typically less sharp than OP2 if somebody know how to use it... (AF hunt more visible on 1" sensor, and I suppose anti-alias filter is much stronger on OP3)
OP2 - brighter lens flatten a bit difference in sensor sizes between OP2 and OP3
OP3 - soft HDR help to stretch dynamic range (the same as in Action 4)
OP3 - better, smoother exposure changes, and better exposure overall
OP3 - bokeh, but uncontrollable - sometimes I want to film person where background is more defined, but lack of aperture in OP3 make this impossible, OP2 is more ok in every situation if we left without aperture ... but 1", bright lens and no aperture ? Not really.
Overall OP3 is in some areas is better camera (screen is great, and tracking is good), but if somebody has OP2, upgrade is discusable.
I almost bought OP3, but when I see more and more footage (mostly paid reviews), my hype fell off. We should wait to more unbiased reviews from real users like You, to decide, but now I stay with my (third) OP2.
And OP3 is bigger and heavier camera, not that "pocket" what I see... eg. for travellers is important.

    • @PicturesofNewYork
      @PicturesofNewYork  Год назад +1

I agree that the Pocket 2 is better at 24 and 30 fps. I typically use 30 fps but have been using 60 fps lately because in continuous focus the pocket 2 sometimes locked on to objects too quickly causing some stuttering when it goes from subject to subject. I was hoping the 3 would be an improvement at 60 but while it is smoother the details were not as good surprisingly. I'm afraid at 24/30 the pocket 2 might have an even bigger advantage but I will give it a try. If the 3 somehow matches the 2 in lower frame rates than it is definitely something DJI can fix with a firmware update. It could be because it has a fixed aperture and the bigger sensor is causing some focus issues like you had mentioned.

A lot of people would think that moving from a 1/17in sensor to a 1in sensor wouldn't do a lot, but actually it does.
OP3's larger sensor (and also therefore larger glass) would affect that DOF significantly ... despite
in this case that f/1.8 from pocket 2 is more akin to standard "smartphone" dof where most will be in focus // even with a smaller aperture, the larger sensor of the pocket 3 will overcompensate for that f/0.2 difderence
the default setting of the pocket 3's full pixel focus is to point focus right away on faces, that's why its almost always moving (and seems like its out of focus on most other foreground and background)
this can be circumvented by changing the focus settings (disable face priority)

I don't have the osmo pocket 3, but I have the osmo pocket 2 and the action 4 a bit like the osmo pocket 3 with a larger sensor than the pocket 2 and which therefore accepts more deviations of light and backlight but the colors are less flattering than the pocket 2.

Is that not down to your grading - you could saturate the Pocket 3 a little more? But yeah, I see what you mean about the detail. That should not be happening due to the larger sensor!

I have some footage in the video where it was straight out of the camera in normal color profile with no post color grading. That didn't seem to help.

If you film with enough light the P2 is a great value. It's not very good if you are filming in low light scenarios.

Normal mode on OP2 is much, much worse in terms of dynamic range than Cinelike, so I suppose it was be reason. For total amateurs OP3 is way better camera, but if You want a bit more advanced postproduction, differences between OP3 and OP2 are not that obvious.

Hmm… Side by side 2 looks brighter and sharper, but… low light comparison? Bigger view screen, 4K at 120? Good click bait though

    • @PicturesofNewYork
      @PicturesofNewYork  Год назад

The 2 definitely has more detail which is different than sharpness. Lowlight the 3 is better, but because most users of the pocket like myself use it in the daytime, that is more important. So not clickbait, for many users it's worse and not an upgrade.

Put my hand on the heart: the pocket 3 is better 100%. BUT spend 600-700$ on a such camera is crazy. Plus they've adopted the trend of making ppl buying more accessories by removing features from the device. Like why the F would you remove 3.5mm jack? No backwatd compatibility. What do we do with all the expensive gear people already have, buy more? Sure, if you want to use this product. Greed is all I see in these companies like dji, apple, samsung and other top companies.

P3 has lower sharpness setting. You need to compare tham at the same settings. You not comparing cameras here for shure.
Also bigger sensor has more bokeh than smaller one so you count out of focus footage as "less details" Honestly that test tells more about your incompetence of testing and using cameras than about cameras itself...

OK, Insee that Osmo 2 is much sharper and appears to be better st first. But then look at the SUV Headlight at 6:39. Osmo 3 has so much more detail.

I have both cameras, DJI Pocket3 shoots better video than DJI Pocket2 in 4K, and full hd DJI Pocket3 shoots video much better than DJI Pocket2. But I still love DJI Pocket2 because of its small size.
