    • @N12015
      @N12015 20 дней назад +30

      Indeed. No player can be good with Pit via not being good. His only cheese is the air shield, and that feels it is there to compensate his low aerial movility.
      A serious question, Is he a mid tier or a High tier? Because he's actually up there, in good part because his kit is overtuned to compensate the lack of an overwhelming strenght, specially after 8.0.0 where he got an actual up air for juggling.

      @@yvngbrokeboi That's also a big reason why Pit is not played so much. He works 19 out of 20 times, but that 20th instance feels quite awful. Combos sometimes fall out due to multihits and small hitboxes, reflectors sometimes don't reflect due to hitting your feet, an unreliable spike, and an exploitable recovery that will be punished if your semi-reliable moves fail to do their job. Don't get me started on Up-Air, that move straight up does not work if not rising due to awful multihits, and was needlessly laggy and weak before 8.0.0.

    I would say that the pits benefited heavily from balance updates than most people think. If they were in the state they are now at the beginning of the game, they would have been more popular. By the end of the balance updates most people had chosen a main at that point, unless they later pivoted to a dlc character.

  • @mphmiles
    @mphmiles 20 дней назад +50

    Commenting while watching the video, but this is my opinion on it:
    Pit got a heavy rep throughout sm4sh for being VERY honest, and within the context of that game, he was. He just had decent/good buttons but not alot of great/amazing ones in that game, hence why he ended in the mid tier but still got wins on some of the best players in the world (Earth v Void). In ultimate however, he carried this stereotype throughout the whole game where he’s fundamentally a different character. Pre-8.0.0, I could agree somewhat even though I still thought he was underrated, but after the 8.0.0 buffs, a lot of his moves and kit got buffed as a whole, what seemed like micro buffs ended up making him a surprisingly strong, underrated character with a surprisingly good disadvantage especially for a sword character with an air shield, projectile, and multi jumps. I really think he’s very underrated and has a lot of dumb things, a lot of things strong about him that’re more than just “good/okay,” and he has specific things that don’t just transfer from other characters. He definitely has an execution barrier with optimal combos and kill confirms, strong projectile play despite not having an item, and has the ability to just get so many chances if he’s not outright ToD’d. You could compare it to sheik in a way imo although I don’t think he’s even comparable to most characters, even Palu, they’re not the same. When people compare him to other characters and think they’re one to one, it’s very hard to push the meta with the character, and that’s why I think people were very surprised with Zackray’s results with the character, almost winning S+/P tiers multiple times. Saying he’s a worse version of a character just disincentives people from playing him. I’m personally very passionate on this, and I believe Pit is very incredible.

    • @mphmiles
      @mphmiles 20 дней назад +6

      One more note is that I do think his hitboxes are blown outta proportion with how “bad” they are. Definitely deserves to be a lot better but with what you have, it’s definitely still very good on all of his moves, most notably nair. Being -6 and disjointed (most notably at the upper front portion) means you can get away with a lot of shield pressure, and you can still drift enough to avoid oos options if you know how to work around the shield (such as G&W up b)

    • @jamesjoe1690
      @jamesjoe1690 20 дней назад

      What does he have that doesn't transfer to other characters?

    • @mphmiles
      @mphmiles 19 дней назад

      @@jamesjoe1690it’s not that he *doesn’t* have things that transfer between characters, but having good fundamentals alone does not make you good at Pit. But for what’s specific for him, it’s arrow play, mastering drag downs (they’re not inconsistent or fake, they require precision and understanding of the hitboxes), and if I want to get into it, mastering orbitars imo is a skill specific to him because no other character has an air shield. Pit’s combo tree is very extensive. :)

    I personally think pit throughout Zackrays skill finally showed the potential of the character in good hands , like I wouldn’t be surprised if Japan thinks it’s high tier , I understand why people from this part of the world would think it’s less when they gravitate towards characters with more cheese and other factor would be the fun part of characters ; which it would be appealing to use others instead of pit , i personally think pits strengths are less obvious that they seem , Zackray it’s incredible yes but I also think that after more than a year of being present with the same highs he gets , it shows that this character can be something in the meta , specially for a straightforward plan , people should be used to it by now but he still doing it again and again and that to me shows that the character it’s high tier but unlike other characters , you are not gonna have the fun and reward of others in certain areas .. to close this out , I would say everytime I watch zackrays pit , he just getting better and more comfortable with the character , it’s fun to watch the evolution of it

    Dark Pit is actually much more powerful that most people think because of his ability to edge guard off stage with electroshock. It kills extremely early off stage. The only thing that holds him back when edge guarding is that people can go up and over him since he doesn’t have any tall vertical attack options.

    Pit and palutena are not the same character. they can be compared sure but they’re but they’re vastly different in terms of execution? Movement, tools, etc
    Also saying “oh if you want this trait just play x character!” That’s not how the game works, that’s like saying to “why play Lucina now when Corrin exists” yes they’re swordies, but Corrin is slow as hell, can barely edge gaurd and doesn’t have an OOs game outside of footstools
    For pit, I’m not gonna play Mario, terry or kazuya because they are different , more up close characters with entirely different weaknesses to eachother
    Edge guarding, mk’s neutral is linear. puff has barely any ground game and dies to everything. pika is very execution heavy and even more precise than pit, and Lucas (????), like LMAO
    If that’s truly something I want to prioritize sure(?) but you truly cannot say that about characters in this game, they’re all unique
    Sometimes the well roundedness is what people want, the vast variety of tools and use cases of those tools
    Pit’s strengths are greatly devalued by people who don’t play him or just don’t know anything about him as a character. ESPECIALLY his kill power, kill confirms and damage dealing which you were very wrong about

    Big Pit fan here.
    Playing some other characters who notably have to play very differently from normal, Pit is great to refresh myself and focus on fundamentals. It also allows me to better fight characters and understand the minute weaknesses and strengths to pinpoint/play around.
    Highly recommend playing Pit. I would say he's awesome for players to learn Smash Bros since his moveset offers a variety of different answers against different opponents. The multi-jumps from his wings also give you some leniency with landing. And he overall forces the player to win without any character-specific strngths.

If he excelled at even 1 area, he would be infinitely better.
    for my Dungeons and Dragons players, pit is what happens when you roll up your character and get average numbers across the board, so he doesn't excell at anything, even the things he was supposed to be good at. Somehow i still enjoy playing him though, hes fun but you never feel like your reaching as high as you could with him

    But he’s that for the brawler that’s in smash
    While pit really shows the Jack of all trades master of none of none is for the swordies
    Which is funny to think that because he has projectiles and most swordies don’t but He really embodies both roles in my opinion very well

    As a Pit main, I like all of these points. I main more Pit than Dark Pit due to the differences in their Arm and Arrow attacks (Pit's Arrows are easier to aim vs Dark Pit's harder hitting Arrows and Pit's Upperdash Arm launches foes upwards vs Dark Pit's Electroshock Arm launching opponents more horizontally away), but I do like to go with either one depending on how I'm feeling like tweaking the game plan or maybe even what opponent I'm facing. I very much enjoy the Orbitars when in the air, but they can be broken, so I have to be careful with that. Both Arm attacks have some super armor, allowing them to take very usually just one hit before they start flinching and being launched, so when the Orbitars break I might try to use that for recovery more until they come back (which they regenerate fairly quickly) though that might make me a bit more predictable in such a case. Even when they are usableI have to be careful, since they shield the sides, rather than above or below. I consider them a pretty good upgrade from his initial Mirror Shield in Brawl though for sure.
    Also yeah, his neutral air gets more joked on than it deserves. It's not the best looking one, and sometimes the big hit at the end that actually launches might not land for some reason, but it's effective as a disruptor if nothing else when it lands. Just one hit, even one, and you flinch unless you have super armor of some kind. And when you do have super armor, that's a quick flurry of hits, so it could easily break through most super armors. If you're able and willing to get up close and use it, I consider it a good move to stop attacks the wind up slowly or even just when you can see them coming with enough of an opening. It's also a good way to stop the enemy's momentum when they're recovering if used well.
    Maybe I like Pit and Dark Pit due to their generalist play style though. I tend to play fighting games by reactions when under pressure, focusing more than anything else about my immediate next step in response to whatever is currently happening rather than thinking several attacks ahead, and their kit lets me do that pretty comfortably so long as I put in the effort and time things well.
    It also makes sense that Palutena would be considered better by most. She does say after all "anything an angel can do, a goddess can do better", so it seems like they really followed through on that. Although I personally find Pit and Dark Pit easier to play after so many years of just playing her so much less.

    I don't know about you but Pit's hitboxes are incredibly consistent in the way that they drag characters with him and the situations the knockback from those moves affords you are just incredibly nice to use, as is his solid gameplay and the way you have to move around and predict your opponent and understand what they're trying to do to you. All of that makes his nuetral and the way he plays those scenarios unique and complex, for example when catching landings/whiffs with dtilt or nair to setup for a 30-40% combo that takes your opponent completely to the other side of the stage as well as having the flexibilty afforded by the consistency in his hitboxes to extend vertically to platforms then carry them even further offstage to ledge trap with some of the fastest and most consistent options in the game. Honestly I want you to TRY to make someone fall out of his fsmash because it is nearly fool proof with how it connects. Not to mention all of his moves are useful in one way or another and will have a use case for each of them. Overall Pit is an honest character but he has some of the best gameplay in the game at a fundemental level for all players of all skill levels to pick up and enjoy while also having an alternative in Dark pit for other use cases and scenarios a stronger arrow or horizontal knockback side b would be better in without having to change the entire overall gameplan

      Also his back air is actually INSANE, and I don't think you did it justice in this video 😂

    • @benross9174
      @benross9174 20 дней назад +3

      All the bad Pit players complain about nair being mid cause they use it as a spacing move when thats not what the move is for. He has other moves for that. Pit nair is insanely good. Frame 4, beats spotdodge and airdodge, good edgeguarding tool since it lasts a long time, dragdown combos for damage and kill confirms and so on. If you ever see a Pit player complain about nair I usually assume they are bad at the game

    • @shuando7791
      @shuando7791 20 дней назад +1

      Well, usually in Smash multihits are not super consistent
      Pit's nair doesn't have an angle known as Sakurai angle or the 361° nor the Autolink angle both of which calculates the little knockback and hitstun needed to connect the next part of the move til the finish
      To drag down an opponent you have to land with the upper front hitbox, which has more hitstun and also is the smallest one
      Usually Dragdowns aren't true with Pit unless we get like a specific hitbox and land right after we hit with that hitbox
      Up air has some consistency issues because it doesn't have the autolink angle, unlike Palu.
      The only move with full special angles is fair, BUT THE FIRST 2 HITS HAS THE SAKURAI ANGLE AND THE LAST HAS AUTOLINK, WHAT??
      I agree with you by the fact he can combo from side to side and keep advantage, but Pit has to guess a lot
      Mindless back air to tomahawk is good, but it can be like Palutena's uncontestable bair to cover ledge jump, get up attack and ledgedrop aerials, Corrin Bair to autospace for you and even if you land the sourspot, still launches offstage, Chrom's with more coverage and 3 frames long
      Pit's back air is good, like Arsene back air levels of good if hit the one frame he gets cuz as soon as that one frame passes, the sourspot overlaps and is weak, sends diagonally up and, for some reason is -3?
      Pit just have to do more work, and i love it, winning a lot with him only says how good of a player you are, we love pit :)))

    • @EvilNodos
      @EvilNodos 20 дней назад

      @@shuando7791 Totally agree but the guesswork comes from not being patient enough to find openings as Pit keeping some of his shortcomings in mind such as some wonky hitboxes, when it comes down to it I see him as a more reactive character that gets a good chunk out of what he does and he can feel very rewarding when playing well with him, as far as consistency I'm not really counting the drag down stuff as like you said it's specific and I was talking more about his general combo trees that are consistent because of the combo angles all of his moves send at and contribute to the rest of his kit working complimentary to each part of his kit that makes him an overall consistent character.
      As far as his back air goes I could write a whole essay about how good it is and useful when dealing with some short characters due to how he lands and pancakes making the opponents oos harder as most of them will be using their fastest aerial or a move that would hit regardless like Squirtle up b oos but even his oos can't punish it that consistently because it's frame 7 nair or frame 9 up b with shield being frame 1 😂 as well as like you said being -4/-3 on shield making it super safe and hard to punish for using as shield pressure, not to mention with the sour spot setting up situations that can be beneficial, like landing traps I mentioned in my comment with nair/dtilt turning into stage carry or popping characters up on a platform to tech chase with a frame 10 kill move that is also fairly consistent being up smash or getting the pickup with up tilt>up air/nair to edge guard/ledge trap.
      Overall a very solid underrated character with a myriad of options that kinda get looked over

    Originally in Brawl Pits theming is what drew me to the character and then their gameplay because of the 'fair' Jack-of-All-Trades archetype. I feel like they fit very naturally into the nature of the game where opponents can fall offstage or get dunked. In fact, I think edgeguarding is among their greatest specific strengths with the amount of offstage versatility they have. In my limited experience with Smash4 I eventually opted for Yoshi(Melee favorite) because I felt Pits lacked oomph or reliability but in Ultimate I got hyped (and mained them again) as those things seemed to be addressed for the most part, especially as Pits got more buffs throughout the game's lifespan. Glad Zackray has been able to take the Pits mantle and show them to be underrated.
    If Smash Ultimate was still getting balance patches I'd love for;
    - Dair spike to give increased hit-lag to opponent (making it safer on shield and being a better KO tool offstage)
    - Utilt having an added small hitbox behind at the swinging feet, so you can sweep up those directly behind you
    - SideB being a better defensive option (Not sometimes getting hit out of the move or failing the hit even though it landed, perhaps being able to jump out of the aerial version sooner but can't use it more than once in the air, and DPit reflecting projectiles directly back to where they came from while perhaps normal Pits SideB upon reflecting something has less endlag on the move).

    Pit and Pittoo are, just like Viridi said about Luigi, "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride". He's a 6-7/10 on absolutely everything, but he's not great at anything. Is not a "Balanced therefore weak" like Banjo-Kazooie, Inkling or Link, he has been properly balanced with above average stats in everything because they're aware he needs to be somewhat overtuned to be a proper jack-of-all-trades. That means though that playing Pit/Pittoo Is quite taxing, because for You to Master him You need to manage all playstyles depending of every matchup and even player, making training less rewarding than it should.
    It's basically the "main character curse", how in PvP they are designed to introduce players and then specialize, and is not popular due to being outclassed in every aspect; this makes perfect sense considering the Pit we know Is a Sakurai's creation and he usually builds with versatility in mind. Ironically though, Pit wasn't an all-rounder in Brawl but the best Zoner besides Olimar and a he got the balanced trait after a rework. He's close to be busted like Palutena but he's finely tuned to not be while also having a fair shot.

    If the opponent knows what they need to do to win the matchup, it becomes very hard to adapt, because ALL your stuff is half-baked.

    plus his moves are just too inconsistent, people fall out of nair and fair all the time. dair has a 1 frame weak spike hitbox and side b sometimes just goes through opponents that are right in front of him. up smash doesnt hit people standing on the ground in front or back and only above. so sometime even if you do find yourself in advantage the opponent might just get out of your hits and punish you for hitting them

    My brother co mains the pits and meta knight, we haven't gone to big tournaments but we place very well in every local we've been too and he's won 5 out of the 6 we've went to. To be fair that's not a huge accomplishment even at those events there was only ever 4-5 other people there i would consider at our skill level, so take that however.
    I think Pit does have BS, and his BS is the orbitars. He doesn't get oppressed by almost anyone, i'd argue his worst matchups would be characters like Kazuya where you have to scrap with him but the risk/reward is not good for you, but Kazuya does that to a huge portion of the cast so he's not unique in that. His disadvantage state is way above average because of it, and while his recovery isn't the best in the game or anything, he has so much mixup with the jumps, the side B, orbitars, etc it's damn near impossible to edgeguard him. That's just one category, but he doesn't get oppressed by a lot of characters that are oppressive.
