Hey roger , just a little tip I’ve found that makes a very big difference , if you flour your fillets before dipping in egg the panko crumbs see to stick much better.!
I know the flour coating works, but I recon it makes the fish a little too stodgy. Less is more when it comes to fish. Great video, thanks for sharing this 👍
A cracking video Roger. Great to see your fishing techniques in this awesome and very different location. I loved the whole catch, fillet, and cook format. Encore!
Sensational Roger….i have done similar with salmon fillets on a surf beach…a little portable cooker and fresh fish…nothing better and what a scenic location….would love to see more like this Roger.
Great work Roger - I fished that same spot after Chrissie this year and landed a 55cm bream from under the timber on the other side. Biggest bream I’ve ever seen. Great to see it’s still firing.
The Mrs cooked up some fish tacos with a flatty and bream mixture from both our catches, all your mentioning of them was stuck in my subconscious 😂 absolutely delicious, made a little burrito for one too, nothing to fancy required and tasted just as good.
Nothing better than catching a couple of nice fish then turning them into a delicious meal! Enjoyed watching this while eating some curried drummer fillets.
Ripper video Roger! If you are prepared to do some research and a bit of legwork you can access some places that see very little in the way of fishing pressure and in most cases have the whole place to yourself! The main trick is to pack light - there is nothing worse than lugging stuff into a place and then when you get there realising you won't need it- a light spin outfit, a few lures, a very basic med kit , a bottle of water packed in a small backpack is all you need. Also, a good idea to let someone know exactly where you are going and what time you expect to be back- you can be surprisingly close to civilisation and not have phone reception and if no one knows where you are going or when you are coming back, they won't come looking for you if something does go wrong!
You know Roger I grew up in East-Londen in SA enjoyed the beach, but once I went with a friend to catch fish of the peer ,the shad were running.I got hooked up on one , obviously with no knowledge,I the last time I saw the fish it was about 3meters from me.I really enjoyed that experience, but I never had the means to acquire fishing rods, but I just love fishing.Maybe one day
Grew up fishing for flathead with my dad.. the roe/eggs taste great. Thank you for your video Dad is not with us anymore. Wish I had an uncle or a friend like you to show us the way of the fisherman.
Of all the great things about your videos roger, i love that you fish landbased. So many channels focus on boat fishing, but great to see the spots you target and tactics you use when perhaps positions are limited without a boat.
Could not have timed this video any better Roger. Im heading to Australia soon and planned on fishing for flathead in exactly a similar situation in a location near this video. This is just the best!
Rodger those chubbies are great for everything. I make my own all black with yellow eyes and the same with pink eyes. And they catch everything for flatties to bream
Flathead is the best eating fish IMHO... I was told if you start skinning with a knife then just pull the skin off the side bones come out with the skin... Just an idea! Keep it up Roger!
awesome Roger. great place. beautiful day. lovely fishing. yummy food. love the salsa you made. big thanks also to your camera woman. she does a great job as usually delivering superb footage. have a great weekend. cheers from Austria 👍🐺👋
Hey Roger. Another great episode as always. I really enjoyed the cooking part at the end, really helps the unskilled fish cooks like myself. I'd really like to see more of them with all the different varieties of fish you catch! Thanks again, I always look forward to Saturday's and checking out your new adventures!
Great stuff Roger. Those little coastal lagoons can be gold mines. I loved watching your catch and cook - fully expected you to sit on that flathead on the log!
A tip for reeling in flathead: hold your rod horizontal and don't make it break surface. They won't fight almost at all until you bring them up; this is especially true for bigger ones, they will just hang on like a big piece of weed there and will go crazy as soon as they feel the air.
this is true. caught a big one the other week and pretty much guided him to shore, wasnt even much of fight i was almost sad that i didnt have to fight it
Excellent video Roger. Love flathead. Enjoyed the added graphics showing depth of water and drop off. We love a good fish taco may have to try your salsa recipe. Good work and keep the vids coming.
Love your videos. Especially seeing the beautiful beaches in Australia. Would love to visit some day. Have gotten a lot of tips and techniques to try surf fishing too. The fish tacos have my mouth watering!
Home of my Pop came out to South Oz a Century ago , No TV back then had 10 kids and these Lizards ( Flathead ) are the best eating Fish in the Sea , Moist chunky boneless tail with a flavour of the Sea , Brilliant , what other Countries call Flathead arent the Same , Cheers 🇦🇺👌
This is such a special video!! Nothing can beat this happiness of fishing and cooking at such a heavenly place. just loved it Roger! Expecting few more videos with cooking climax on various fish. A great fan of your from India and i follow each and every guidelines and giving ammazing results. Thank you so much.
Great video Roger, lovely flatties my favourite.i have had huge success with a lure called Prawno. Flatties hit it all the time.have you heard of these lures? The cooking was really nice.
Hey Roger, just a quick tip when using those shallow diving chubby lures, I love the slow reel but I add a couple of pauses, especially when targeting flathead to allow for a longer biting window which helps to pick up that extra fish on more quiet days where the fish are being picky
35:37 Pro tip: Close the top of the bag, ensuring it has planty of air inside, spin a couple of times to seal, then just toss/jiggle the bag around to cover everything without effort or mess. Works a treat for anything you are coating.
Roger, after watching your flathead taco RUclips video, we tried it, what a delight! As Soon as we catch some salmon we’ll give the salmon fish cakes a go. Cheers, ‘love your work’.
Hey Roger, excellent video as usual. Another tip, to test the heat in the pan, just put a pinch of the flour in the oil... if it sizzles like how you want it, you're good to put in the fillets.
Way more catch and cook please 🙏 loved this one , catching heaps of flatty on the swan but want to catch them more towards the ocean to eat ❤ great video , thankyou
hey roger it was my 15th birthday last week and i got a diawa excellor 2500 with 8lb line and a 3kg veritas and a shimano nasci 3000 with 15 lb rod aand im going camping up at noosa on the holidays but was wondering if i should put my nasci on my veritas with 10lb mono and the excellor on a other rod i have because im using a 12kg rod for 6kg line but really just wanted say say thanks for all the stuff you taught me in the 5 years ive been fishing solo. ps i ws wondering what pund line you were using?
Hi Roger I’ve just subscribed to your channel really good information it’s inspiring me to get back out there and fish again .those flathead you cooked up we’re making my mouth water .love your your channel keep it going Roger thanks
Lately ive been fishing around Eden / Nullica …at low tide and have been catching some good fish …2 x 40 cm bream..the next day ..a Salmon …a Tailor and a bream all within the first hour …good season for fishing
pretty similar to how I cook flatties but will try the salsa and tortillas soon thanks. try the same crumbing with the egg roe sacs absolutely superb, used to use for bait for trevally in wollongong harbour back when coop used to prepare fillets throwing in frames for fish to feed on. decent size too. great way to cook many tacos with fish or squid with salsa
G'day Roger, loving the videos mate. Just wondering what the brand of the chubbie lure is? I assume its the Jackall shallow. Ive learnt a lot from your videos, catching fish much more regularly 👌👌👌
Roger, very interesting video. What type of flathead were they. I couldn't see any spot on the tail for duskys and those spots on the back confused me?
Love the video. I am a new follower and are really enjoying your content. You mentioned in a past video or two about Thai fish cakes. Would love to see an example of them from rig, bait, catch, bleed and cook if you wouldn't mind.
I’ve use that bait loads of times and had no luck on it. Kev get some squid cut in to strips and I have loads of bites on prawns. get your self some elastic you can get in decathlon to keep your bait on. Great video and that last spot would be good for the garlic chicken in that pool.
Top vid as usual Rog, what a spot!Thats the flathead roe/eggs you should fry it and eat it, also I dont cut through the flatty on the first fillet, I turn then cut into the otherside and then rip/peel the skin off which takes most of the pin bones as well. Cheers tight lines
Hey roger , just a little tip I’ve found that makes a very big difference , if you flour your fillets before dipping in egg the panko crumbs see to stick much better.!
100% correct! I recommend trying salmon in this way too, crumbed salmon fish fingers are really nice and should suit this recipe quite well.
Thanks Peter, yes you are right. I could have added that step 😊
Great video Roger I'm about to have a go for a flathead next week that are bluespot flathead hear in SA.😊
Give up mate your shit at what ever you do
I know the flour coating works, but I recon it makes the fish a little too stodgy. Less is more when it comes to fish. Great video, thanks for sharing this 👍

More to come!
I second that request!!

Sensational Roger….i have done similar with salmon fillets on a surf beach…a little portable cooker and fresh fish…nothing better and what a scenic location….would love to see more like this Roger.
Hi Roger and Bec, thanks for sharing. The fish tacos look delicious and very simple. Well done.
Welcome 😊 I very much enjoyed eating the tacos 😋
Great work Roger - I fished that same spot after Chrissie this year and landed a 55cm bream from under the timber on the other side. Biggest bream I’ve ever seen. Great to see it’s still firing.
Where abouts is this spot?
The Mrs cooked up some fish tacos with a flatty and bream mixture from both our catches, all your mentioning of them was stuck in my subconscious 😂 absolutely delicious, made a little burrito for one too, nothing to fancy required and tasted just as good.
Good stuff Benjamin

Ha ha, yes
