I’m self taught drummer and Found this introduction very helpful. I’m currently trying to learn to read/write drum charts, work my way up to being able to sight read and increase my overall drumming abilities. I wish I was able to learn this when I was much younger. Unfortunately I went to small Catholic school w/o a well developed music program. My parents didn’t pay for lessons for me. I learned by listening/playing to songs on radio. And watch as many live drummers as I could and learn their movements.

The drum set image over the music staff is genius! It all makes so much sense now. I've never seen that done when I learned the notation. I always realized the toms go down the staff the deeper they go, and the bass is the lowest note, but to see it line up almost exactly is a great reminder, just picture a drum set over the staff. Even the foot pedal with the angle it's at makes sense that it's below the bass drum. I always remembered Hi-Hats are high, so it goes above the top line, Crash is even higher, and the Ride rides along the top line.
