Tony Randall is very much in his 1950s Harvey Weskit/E.K. Hornbeck persona on the most recent couple or three episodes on which he is a guest panelist. (That refers to his characters in the TV show "Mr. Peepers" and in the original Broadway production of the Jerome Lawrence/Robert E. Lee play "Inherit The Wind.") And when he said, "I wish I may, and I wish I might," that reminded me that, 12 and a half years later (1978), he would tour in a summer-stock production of "The Music Man," playing Harold Hill very, very well - including a 5-week run at the Arie Crown Theater. I still feel privileged to have worked many performances of that show's run (as an Andy Frain usher) during my summer vacation. Tony Randall personally was outstanding - and the production of the show was absolutely first-rate in every respect! Kate Smith wasn't so much a singer as a force of nature. She had an incredible voice in the 1930s and in the 1970s. It is interesting to watch her sense of her audience in action both at the beginning and at the end of her appearance.
For a time during the game itself, I thought she was getting a bit annoyed that she was not being guessed, but during the interview and exit after the game, it was clear that she had thoroughly enjoyed herself, and she seemed pleased to have fooled the panel. To use one of Arlene's frequent exclamations -- I'm glad! ;) Perhaps it was just the difficulty of using such a high and squeaky voice that made her face look strained at times during the game play.
One of the great singers. The Philadelphia Flyers, she always sang God Bless America before they started. They won more games when she sang. She had a powerful voice and a beautiful one too. Miss you.
@@brich2929 Deeply disappointed in a society that turns it's back on it's honored citizens. It's a fact of history that morality changes from time to time and from culture to culture, so I abhor the fact that we are applying our values on people and culture long dead. Slavery and racism were never OK, but virtually every civilization and empire has had it. The classical Greeks had slaves from everywhere, treated women horribly and condoned pederasty. Shall we now ban Plato and Euripides from libraries? George Washington owned slaves--- do we strike him from the history books? How do we learn from history if we strike the imperfect from our past and pretend it never existed?

The manners on WML is still startling. However -- Oh, come on Betty! Get up on your feet for the grandmotherly bus driver and for Kate Smith. Arlene did. I doubt Dorothy would have sat about for either one of them.
Where did Allen Ludden and Betty White live in 1965 -66? Where was Password broadcasted? New York? Los Angeles? Could she have been a permanent WML panelist in 1966? She certainly is a personality contrast to Arlene Francis.
soulierinvestments Betty White and Allen Ludden split their time between NY and Brentwood, CA. Betty still lives in the same house on N Carmelita Drive in the Brentwood neighborhood of West Los Angeles.
Kate Smith was a living American icon. She introduced the song, "God Bless America," to this country in a way that compelled you to stand up when she sang the song.
Videotaped on November 21, 1965. So this was actually the 2nd episode after Dorothy Kilgallen's death. Meanwhile, on December 12, the cast and crew taped an episode that would air on the first Sunday of 1966 (January 2). The cast and crew had December 20, 1965-January 8, 1966 off.
***** I'm surprised to realize that. I found this to be the most entertaining episode since Dorothy's death, and I was thinking that time had begun to heal some of the panel's pain and shock. But if this was taped only two weeks after Dorothy died, that wouldn't account for why it is better than the Nov. 21st live episode, which I now remember you had previously mentioned was done afterwards. I think the combination of Tony Randall and Betty White helped a lot. They're both very strong players with a lot of personality, Tony is always full of fun, and they work well with the rest of the panel. In fact, if they had ever wanted to create a new "permanent line-up," I think this would have been a good one. I'm not sorry that they continued to have rotating guest panelists in both Fred's and Dorothy's places, though.
ALL of them were CONSUMMATE professionals. They had dignity, grace, INTEGRITY and a strong sense of DUTY to their profession. Pepple f that caliber are all too rare today. I for ne am extremely grateful to have lived at a time when I was able to experience them firsthand. They certainly gave us a tremendous number of windefrfully happy memories. THEY knew -- as do I -- that there are many things more inportant than our PERSONAL NEEDS and FEELINGS, bless them. So sad that people seem largely to have forgotten that today.
Interesting that despite her visits to WML and her attempts at a singing career during the 50s, the mention of Margaret Truman's name in 1965 was met by raucous laughter.
This is about a month after Dorothy's passing, and you can already see that the show has lost something. I think that they would have guessed Kate Smith if Dorothy had been there, asking her usual incisive questions. Instead, we have Tony Randall actually PASSING on his question.
I love how Betty White mentioned her son. She didn’t say my stepson she said my son. Just another reason to love this great lady.

Miss you.
what are your thoughts now that they've disowned her?
Kate Smith was one of America's great popular singers!
KATE SMITH HAD A WONDERFUL VOICE......
What a woman Kate Smith was! And singer!
The greatest lady singer ever.
What a great and gracious lady. An American icon. God bless her.
Came for Kate Smith. Stayed for Betty White.
English Countryside, what a great comment! Totally agree. Both Kate and Betty are beloved icons.
Ahahahaha, Tony Randall's face when they announce the guy is a Christmas Tree grower....!

15:25 -- I hadn't specifically noticed it before, and when I read your comment and went looking for Tony's reaction, I expected to see some kind of comical look of surprise. Instead, his face is so deadpan it's almost as if he's having trouble believing what he's hearing!
@@savethetpc6406 I thought he was trying to figure out the food it could hold. Bennett looked equally dubious.
(Candy Canes)
@@Sylvander1911 You may be right!

One of the few mystery stars they didn’t guess!
I love how Benett used to sit straight with a serious face to observe the contestant if he got a "No!" For his question.
I love Kate Smith! The lady really had some pipes! God Bless Her!
The manners on WML is still startling. However -- Oh, come on Betty! Get up on your feet for the grandmotherly bus driver and for Kate Smith. Arlene did. I doubt Dorothy would have sat about for either one of them.
Dorothy rarely stood for anyone, and she most likely would not have stood up for either of these ladies either.
Great to see Kate Smith and also the mention of Cornell.
Arlene Francis has class and impeccable manners. Since the first guest was older than she, she stood up to greet her.
Where did Allen Ludden and Betty White live in 1965 -66? Where was Password broadcasted? New York? Los Angeles? Could she have been a permanent WML panelist in 1966? She certainly is a personality contrast to Arlene Francis.
Goodson-Todman primarily produced all of their shows in New York until 1971. So I would assume that the Luddens lived in New York during this time.
soulierinvestments Betty White and Allen Ludden split their time between NY and Brentwood, CA. Betty still lives in the same house on N Carmelita Drive in the Brentwood neighborhood of West Los Angeles.
Miss Dorothy Kilgallen....
Mrs. Dick Kolmar
I crave times like this
Kate Smith was a living American icon.

I'm surprised to realize that.
What a classy lady Kate Smith was! So sad that you don't see more women like her in our society today!
Other than Color, Betty Whites Hair do is the same Now as it was then.
Interesting that despite her visits to WML and her attempts at a singing career during the 50s, the mention of Margaret Truman's name in 1965 was met by raucous laughter.
So gracious
Love Kate Smith God Rest Her
contestant # 1: bless her heart! :-)
This is about a month after Dorothy's passing, and you can already see that the show has lost something. I think that they would have guessed Kate Smith if Dorothy had been there, asking her usual incisive questions. Instead, we have Tony Randall actually PASSING on his question.
SHE HAS THE MOST WONDERFUL VOICE , WHEN SHE SINGS THE ANGELIC HOST SINGS ALONE
