    You walk in a supermarket. There you’ll find the fruit and vegetables section. Then you’ll have eggs and meat somewhere. All the other sections are unhealthy. That’s not 60%, more like 80-90%.

    Ultra processed "food" isn't necessary and is bad for you so actually it is like cigarettes. You wouldn't make the argument that because we breathe air, smoke is fine.

    The free market chap is like a cartoob bad guy. Arguing there should be no efforts made to improve people's diet because government interventions don't work then recommends a government intervention of giving the over weight drugs! Always pretending to be free marketeers but just selling tat!

      Well, at least what he says is true and that may save lives ...he's much better than those law makers and ultra processed food manufacturers are keeping quiet and continue poisoning people around the world.

    I'm forced to smile ( not in an amused way) at a government's comments on exercise, given their history of selling off school playing fields and lack of financial support of sports facilities - swimming pools in particular.

    Sugar is by far the most addictive substance there is. The consequences of sugar addiction are even worse than those of tobacco addiction.

    Instead of just raising the tax on UPF, raise the tax on those foods and lower it on whole foods. We already have different taxes for different foods so why not make the best food for us more affordable and the worst food for us more expensive.

      Because unfortunately whole foods are mostly owned by farmers and ultra-processed foods are owned by big corporations that have the power and money to lobby politicians.

      In Australia all "good" foods are tax free - fruit & vege, meat, eggs, milk - all tax free. We are in the habit of mostly making our meals from scratch because our daughter is gluten free and most pre-made meals contain gluten. Some people argue that fresh food is more expensive but from my experience that is a myth.

    I am ultra fit and just had major cardiac arrest at 41. Never eating out from now on. All f poison.

      i would get multiple professional opinions on the cause, and not just blame processed foods (though they are obviously unhealthy). Maybe its genetic, maybe its to much physical stress from the level of exercise you are doing. don't walk into a second cardiac arrest because you thought it was just bad food.

    I quit ultra processed food and sugar a year and a half ago best decision I ever made. I did it to combat inflammation but the 6 pack is a welcome bonus!

    Thanks for bringing on the IEA, it really helped clarify the situation. Normally I'd be against the false equivalence granted by giving an opinion for hire the same platform as an eminent professor, but in this case the fact that no company was willing to directly address the concerns but instead do it through an opaquely funded pressure group pretending to have a trace of credibility shows how weak their position is.

    yes a food educational program would be very helpful. veggies need to be more accessible and no throwaways but make 40% cheaper the day they want to remove it from store.

    A friend of mine, who doesn't like vegetables trained for a marathon. He lost so much weight that he looked ill. So to say that you can't run off a bad diet is only true in part.

    it takes a little more than 2 weeks to get of the addiction and for the system to change the sugar cravings. Try not put sugar in your tea for a few months and notice after a while the tea starts tasting sweet again with no sugars.😀

      Marketing now is so powerful & equally misleading.
      A 4.5/5 health star healthy food rating on flavored milk is based on 100mls. Scale it up to the single serve bottle size 600mls and it's health rating is 0.5/5. 😮

    Adele Davis "Let's Eat Right..." warned about the American diet in 1954. "The Longevity Paradox..." by heart surgeon and scientist Gundry recently explains probiotic and probiotics at the molecular level. The best demonstration is probably Jhoon Rhee, Korean father of American martial arts because at 80+ years old he looked like his friend Bruce Lee looked at age 30 AND apparently Rhee ate the traditional prebiotic and probiotic diet. Fighters, martial artists, boxers, and weight lifters may all exemplify negligible senescence but Rhee is best because he was before steroids. So, diet-microbiome, aerobic muscle fascia exercises, and good sleep are foundations of health. RUclips "Clean Living" shows how to make your own probiotics and probiotics.

    People often prefer to consume Ultra Processed food in packaging because they feel like they don't have the knowledge and experience to prepare healthy meals from real food quickly or even at all. In reality it's very quick and easy to prepare real food. It would help people a lot to have easily available training on quickly preparing real food meals, I don't meal complicated recipes such as a chef would prepare but demonstrations on how to prepare simple healthy meals quickly. I just got stuck in and learnt myself, it's not fancy but I can and do quickly prepare real food meals and it makes a huge difference to health but many people either don't understand the benefits or are afraid to try simple real food cooking.

    I suspect the chap with the interesting hair has a problem with his diet mental health connection. Representing greedists who will sell you anything to make money and then advocating the pharma industry mop up the emerging problem to make money is totally appalling. We need legislation and tax on unhealthy food. We need the nanny state. It works.

    Lack of self restraint and calories in calories out. Two massive misconceptions. Obesity is a symptom of metabolic ill health, which people who are 'normal' weight and underweight can suffer from as well. The Eat Well Plate advocates 55 to 60 % of our dietary requirements come from carbohydrates. This is fuelling insulin resistance which leads to diabetes and obesity. Fructose consumption is also leading to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, something unheard of before 1980.
    We need to eat real food and to disconnect the large food companies from lobbying government, sponsoring sport and school equipment and supporting the UK Diabetics Association and official Public Health England Dietary Advice.
    Ultra Processed food needs to be seen in the same context as cigarettes and alcohol and come with a health warning of over consumption.
    Supermarkets need to step up.

    To achieve a good healthy diet we need people from every spectrum and make a common consensus about what is actually good for our bodies. Then what ever the results are, make those foods easily accessible and cheap.
    No interference from anyone who can profit from it, for once just tell people the truth. It's then up to them if they follow the advice. Putting more tax on something isn't going to stop people.
    The sad reality is it would put way to many people out of business and consequently it will never happen, profit over health every time.

    When the medical establishments of the US, Canada, and UK don't believe ultra processed foods are terrible for people, when they continue to push for people eating 40% of their diet in carbs and are unwilling to put forth a reason for skyrocketing obesity rates in the Western world, then this lends credibility to lobbyists of the UPF food industry. Without government support for overcoming the obesity epidemic, all hope is lost. How can you convince the average guy and cal on the street to stop eating UPFs without gov't support?

      Start baking your own cakes, sweeten the dough with date sugar, which is ground dates, so the "sugar" comes with a lot of fiber. Then for the cream or icing use honey. Don't use honey for baking, because in hot temperatures it will become sugar. You can make chocolate icing for your cake with real cocoa, double cream, mascarpone cheese and honey. Or I've made wonderfully refreshing lemon icing in the same way, just swapped cocoa for lemon juice and zest. Those cakes are filling, delicious and will satisfy your cravings, and will let you wean off your sugar addiction. One day you'll notice that you can say "no, thank you" to a cookie and not feel deprived whatsoever. Good luck 😊
      PS. Also, what helped me was stocking up on dried fruit, like raisins, apricots etc, I just chose ones with no added sugar or ideally chemicals. When I had cravings, it seemed to me that those fruits would not satisfy them, but they actually did. I put no restrictions on how many I could have. It really works. My sister also used that method to wean herself off sugar and it worked for her too.

      ​@@frusia123still horrible choices, sugar is sugar is sugar! Also, the body does NOT need fibre unless you're eating carbohydrates. The body treats all carbohydrates as sugar. Fibre is simply 'indigestible many sugars.'
      I recommend Dr Paul Masons presentations on fibre.

      @@sharfalor4244 Ok, continue using aspartame then. I'll stick with my method, because it works, makes me feel great, satisfied and not craving sugar. If you read my comment with comprehension, perhaps you'd notice that I propose unrestricted consumption as a temporary weaning off method. Because it's self restricting anyway, you won't binge on that type of sweets. I now eat my cakes and dried fruit as a treat, but don't need to eat it every day, or even every week. And not because I'm denying myself, but because I don't crave the sweet taste anymore. It's freedom.

      @@frusia123as someone who didn’t eat any sugar sort from fruit for five years sugar is sugar. The only exception is fruit in its natural state. Dried fruit is still processed and the removal of water is as problematic as the removal of fibre - I used to happily eat handfuls of dried apricots but l I would never eat as many fresh apricots in one sitting.

    Read the excellent book, The Great Plant Based Con by Jayne Buxton. She has a chapter on how companies like Coca Coca, Kellogg's and Nestle and organisations like the 7th Day Adventists are promoting plant based highly processed foods for various reasons (profit and ideology usually) over real food.

My point is that my son is vegan and has been for decades and he eats an extremely nutritious diet which includes little to no processed food. It is very much a choice for him and it involves a lot of cooking and preparing. This is the underlying problem with our diet be it vegan or otherwise, people don't want to put the effort in and even when many do they are not eating what is actually good for our bodies.

      Don't be down on what you aren't up on. He's right. If an overweight person is also Insulin resistant, and they usually are, it is exceptionally hard to shed pounds. See my comment elsewhere in thos blog for a better explanation.

    People worry far too much about their health to the extent that it's ruining lives. They live in misery to a ripe old age. I have smoked like a chimney since I was 13 but I'm as fit as a flea at 55 now. I am losing teeth but atm I'm looking roguishly good looking and I currently have three fantastic women on the go! Honestly, fill your boots because the last thing you want to be is the oldest resident of the care home

    Stop calling ultra processed edibles food. They can be consumed as food can be cosumed, but there the similarity ends. No one will indentify the groups who are prone to obesity for political reasons, but at least everyone can agree to use the word food just for the nutrition we need, not the ultra processed edibles no one should eat.

    Put a luxury tax on comestibles that exceed a certain price per kilo, like caviar, wagu beef etc, ringfence this tax to teach home economics in schools and local community cooking courses.

      I'm 57, 5'11, muscular and weigh 14 stone 😎. Minced beef and eggs, some butter, bacon, real chicken pieces (not the sauce covered muck) it's saved me a fortune over the last 4 years 😁, and I've never felt healthier.
