I am now 84 years old and I attended Barney from 1944 to 1948 and this brought back many good memories (and some not so good) of my time there. I certainly remembered some of the masters, in particular, Bentley Beetham (my House Master and rock climbing instructor), Mr Birkbeck, the Headmaster and others mentioned above. I also remembered Kenneth King, who was mentioned in the rugby match as, during my last year, he was Head Boy. My one regret is that I have never attended any of the reunions.

Derek - there are regular reunions - do come back sometime if you can. Are you on the mailing list to receive the BarneyConnect Magazine which details what is coming up? There is also a very active Old Barnardians Facebook Group if you use social media

Interesting to see this old footage. I was at Barney from ‘89 to ‘98, first joining lower division prep with Miss Willatt. I would’ve been in first or second year senior school when the later part of this video was filmed but don’t recognise anyone. I only have good memories of the place. It felt very old fashioned and traditional, with great sporting art and music facilities. I had the best friendships I’ve ever had there. Sadly I’ve lost contact with the vast majority.

Thank you so much for this. John Parry was my grandfather.

Marvellous to see "the old school film", as we called it in the 1970s, again [I was 1971-'8, and one of the school projectionists towards the end of that time]. We used to find it hilarious, but looking at it again now, life in the '70s was surprisingly similar to that shown in 1948: in particular the dormitories (long and cold!), and dining (though tablecloths had gone by then - but the long tables, served by a monitor from the ends, were only replaced by a cafeteria system _during_ the 1970s). Swimming in the nude had gone for main school boys, though the Prep school (for American readers: in British English, the preparatory school is for boys _before_ the main school, which started around age 11; the Barney one was also for far fewer boys than the main school - it was more like a family) still bathed nude into the '70s! Finally, the school was a lot less militaristic than might appear - certainly by the '70s, it was not compulsory to join the CCF (combined cadet force - army and RAF [no navy]).
IMO the addition of sound to the silent film - and of course AW's commentary - has been done very sensitively: so often, I see (on TV) silent film which has been very clumsily sounded.
Can I ask that someone re-upload it with the aspect ratio correctly set? It's set to 1:1 (square) here, but should be 4:3. (Even the "modern" - well, 1990s - bits are 1:1.) [If you download it - sorry RUclips! - you can correct the aspect ratio in most players.]

Thanks for making this available. Fascinating to see my Grandfather Arnold Snodgrass!

He taught me, I'm pretty sure! Retired while I was there (1970s). The "Snoddyknock" (a rap with the knuckle to the top of the head!) was feared but usually deserved; I'd say he was feared by some, but respectd and liked by many more!

I remembered ‘Snoddy’ as he took us for English and then cultural studies in the 6th form when science based A level students needed ‘broadening’! He was a delight and I remember him fondly.

I attended Barnard Castle School from 1970 - 76 in North House.
It is amazing how simliar it was then to what is presented on the old school film.
What a change though having girls at the school, how I wish they had been introduced during my time!
Nice to see there is still support from old barnardians and that the school still seems to be doing well.
Hi and good luck to all who attended .

KCNGK was a part of the school's fabric! He was mine too in the 1970s (I'm 60 in 2020/'1), as well as being housemaster of one of the houses then. I remember him using his own old notebooks (he attended the school as a boy) to teach from.

    question:
Why that music (Symphony No. 9, in E Minor "From the New World")?
It was played at my dad's funeral (;him, aslo from Co Duhram)
Any signifacance to the region for example?

I forgot to say: the colour drawing of the front of the school, which appears before and after the film, was by D. Pittuck, much loved art master and also accomplished local artist. (I am fortunate to own an original Pittuck; unfortunately, it's of me!)
And: note that this clip is actually only about 53 minutes long; the last ten minutes or so are blank. Maybe if someone re-uploads it (assuming RUclips let you do that) to correct the aspect ratio, they can trim it too.

@@oldbarnardians2364 I'm still waiting (2021-1-31) - still wrong aspect ratio (1:1 instead of 4:3) and about 10 minutes of black needing trimming (-:!

i went there in the late 80's, as a last-dicth attempt to escape the pull of the Notts social service "care" system, and a degenerating adoptive family unit, thwarted by many things... incling my behviour as a vaccintation-injured autsitic (cogna in retrospect)... So i guess my stint at "Barny's" was also "doomed" to failure; not least for the diplo-sycophantic politics of the "high caste" boarding school culture and 'staff, alike... No offence.. Just saying...
But i ended up in an infamously brutal ''care'' intsitution, in Notts after all...
I felt chucked under the bus for what was a snooty and amoral culture... by being scapegoated as 'shunning the other boys'.. so sayeth the headmaster at the time.
    take care anyway
