I’m in N central Washington state and trying to get my soil warmed up to get mine in the ground my May 1st since I planted them April 2!

    I’ve found that a drip line irrigation system works best. In the past, my watermelon plants have had issues with mildew on the leaves when I used regular sprinklers for watering. Drip line keeps the leaves dry and I’ve been much more successful.

    You can encourage larger watermelons by pruning them like tomatoes. Take the side shoots off and only encourage 2-3 stems.

      Actually...I was lucky and never lost them. I had the watch time by a good margin but was cutting in close on subs. If they would have made the changes a couple of months prior, I would have been out of luck. You will get there eventually, once you get past that 1,000 sub mark, your channel will grow a lot faster as well...so that is something else to look forward to.

      Stick your finger in your soil if it is dry then it needs water if there is moisture there then don't worry about it. I really can't tell you how often to water, it depends on your soil type, temperatures, humidity, etc.

    Loved your detail video. I am in Canada and growing watermelon for the first time. My seedlings now 8 days old have a fuzz around it’s roots and smells like rotten watermelon in that paper towel ziplock bag, are these the signs of germination gone wrong should I discard and start fresh. Second ? Is that can I just plant them in a bigger container from the beginning so not to disturb the roots. Or grow the pot as the plant grows but just be careful when switching from smaller to bigger pot. Happy harvesting watermelon 💚💚

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  3 года назад +1

      I would put the sprouted seedings in a pot right away. They should probably be fine. Things can get stinky and a little moldy in a wet ziploc bag. You can start in a smaller pot if you want and move to a bigger pot if needed, as long as you are careful.

      I also have moved the pot into my greenhouse. It gets really hot in there to the point there's steam water running down the walls of the greenhouse. Is that ok? All of my fruits and veggies seem to be doing better in the greenhouse. When it gets really hot from the sun I open the door to let the heat out. Is that ok?

    Hi, may I know the composition of the soil? Compost, manure, potting soil, perlite, vermiculite? Thank you

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад +1

      Hi matt, I have heavy clay soil but work really hard to amend the area where I plant watermelons. In the fall I add leaves to the garden. In the spring I amend my soil with aged chicken manure, bagged compost, whatever I can get to loosen the soil. Ideally watermelons grow well in loamy soil or sandy loam but you can grow them in other soil types as well.

    Mini Love was nothing special. Sugar Baby was better. Jung is offering 2019 AAS winner Mambo! I am going to grow Hamby 2020. How is Blacktail Mountain? Which are you growing 2020 and what do you recommend we grow? That Royal Golden looks interesting.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад +3

      Hi Portia! I am just starting to think about which watermelons to grow this year. So far I am planning on growing Royal Golden and maybe Blacktail Mountain in big pots. I plan to keep up with watering, fertilizing, etc.....all things that I need to do a better job with when it comes to container plants. I want to see what type of results can be achieved in containers with good care. In the garden I want to definitely grow Congo and Klondike Striped Blue Ribbon, also maybe a giant variety that I have seeds for( can't think on the name right now). I have always had the best luck with Ali Baba so I might grow that one as well. It's usually the first to ripen and it's a vigorous strong plant. AAS winners are always worth trying.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад +1

      How long ago did you plant them? Are they indoors or outdoors? Are you keeping the soil slightly moistened? You don't want your soil sopping wet and you also don't want it dry. Seeds need light moisture to germinate. Sown indoors, they could take anywhere from a week to 10 days to germinate, maybe even a little longer.

    • @charleshornick1582
      @charleshornick1582 4 года назад +1

      Well, I planted them a week ago and I grew them indoors in a green bucket and outside in some mulch.

    Watermelons are originally from Africa so, I doubt that we in the U.S. can compete with Africa's heat :)

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  6 лет назад +2

      Right, modern day watermelons are descended from wild watermelons in Africa...but I want people to double check before using black plastic on their soil, it may not be the best idea in every area. Also, heat plus drought could definitely negatively impact a crop.

I added manure and in ground soil. My native soil is clay. Should I grow it in the native soil and just amend that?

    • @verawallace9055
      @verawallace9055 2 года назад

      You have to amend the soil, with clay being the lesser amount, you could add sand and compost as melon needs loamy soil, good luck
