- This is my first batch of homemade root beer. It's an easy recipe. I used my beer equipment to keg & force carbonate it (using CO2).
It turned out pretty darn good!
This is for a 4 gallon batch - I used root beer extract for this recipe
How to:
Recipe:
4 Gal Spring Water
2 lbs Dark Brown Sugar (4 cups)
1 lb Honey (2 cups)
4 Cups White Sugar (I used 2 cups corn sugar and 2 cups regular sugar
2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
1 Bottle Root Beer Extract - 2 oz (by Rainbow Flavors - Old Fashioned Homebrew) Хобби
I put this together for 4th of July this year. First time kegging. Everyone seems to love it. I think it came out perfectly. Thanks for the recipe and the easy to follow tutorial.
Love it, gonna give this a try for the hubby who loveeee Rootbeer ☺️👍
Great video, thanks for taking the time to post. My son and I made some for our Church's Octoberfest as an alternative to home brews made. Was a big hit with kids and adults alike.
Thank you!
First, great job Jason. Thank you for taking the time to produce and publish the video!
I made this for Thanksgiving 2015. This was my first time kegging anything and first ever attempting to make soda. I followed the recipe withe 2 cups of corn sugar and 2 cups of regular/white sugar instead of the straight 4 cups of white sugar.
This mix had a very unique root bear taste, but awesome! Much different taste of root beer I have ever had.
Everyone that tried it, really liked it. However, my dad and father-in-law absolutely loved it!! They said it reminded them of root beer when they were kids. That has to mean something, as everything was better 50/60 years ago. ;^)
I will be making my second batch for the 4th of July. I will not be changing anything about this mix.
thank you! Glad it worked out for you!
Great Video Chris!
Amazing recipe, I have been using this to brew root beer for several years and have gotten many friends to make root beer by showing them this video too
Thank you! I haven't made it again for quite sometime. I'll need to watch the video again to remember! Glad you like it!
Prost , just subscribed after finding your channel , we home brew beer make meads and wine , grow some hops, my grand kids love when I make root beer ..
looks tasty!
I love root beer and by the way that Beer looked, it looked delicious,, I mean there's two kinds of ppl either you like root beer or you don't, there ain't no in between, man I wish I could of tried that glass of root beer looked mighty fine delicious to me ,,,
Ever wonder what would happen if you used cane sugar instead of corn sugar when you make beer? My father-in-law did it. It drove the alcohol content up to 16% by volume. It actually made a good beer with a slight sweet aftertaste and very smooth. It was a Pilsner beer.
Great job! The honey sweetened rootbeer is without a doubt the best! I make a similar recipe which was inspired by Weinhards rootbeer. Love the keg idea, I don't drink alcohol but truly enjoy great rootbeer.
+USCOMBATDIVER I love Weinhards
+Pyscho Live I can't agree more. I had a work party this past weekend at St Arnold's. Granted they use cane sugar so it's no honey but it was pretty good.
I bought some today. SOOOO GOOD.
Have you ever had Oskar blues or Virgils or Sioux City root beer
+Pyscho Live I bought a keg of Virgil's a few years ago. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. I have tried the other.
Hi Chris, I liked your video. It was easy to follow and I have really one question. About how much would it cost to get a setup for the root beer? The keg, lines, CO2, etc?
Also, how long did the root beer stay carbonated?
At what temperature did you start adding the ingredients? This looks delicious! I'm sure the soccer team enjoyed it too.
That root beer flavoring brand is really good. Never use stuff from grocery stores, they contain a lot of alcohol (extracts) and imparts a weird taste.
Good
How long do u carbonate the mixture of sugars and extract (final mixture) before drinking ,plus the 24 hours of carbonating water?
Awesome! Did you know that if you use corn sugar, you can actually dissolve it in room temperature water and skip the heating?
how long does rootbeer last? I know the instructions for the 2ltr soda bottle says 4 weeks in fridge.
Hey Chris have you tried the Root Beer concentrate used for slushies etc. I get mine from Prairie Moon beverages at prairiemoon.biz There are several other large suppliers online as well.
We like several of their flavor concentrates and they are quite concentrated 4oz making a gallon of syrup and 6 gallons of soda. Their root beer, cola, ginger ale and blue cotton candy, lime and orange dream are all pretty good. Some others were not like key lime just was not right. We use local juice, wine etc as well. We use a CO2 tank setup with a carbonator cap and shake to fizz up soda in a minute or two from cold. Anyhow jusy fyi. Nice video!
where did u get that sliver can from ????/
What Psi is used to dispense it after it is carbonated? I would like to do this, but have on a tap in my keezer. Thanks and great video!
I think I had it about 8 to 10 psi.
perfect, that is what I have my beer set to. Thank you
I don't know if you still monitor this, but everything I read said to said the soda for around 30 psi. Did you have any trouble with it set so low?
I'm going to try this this weekend. Only question I have is serving pressure. Did you serve at 25psi? Or did you lower it?
Myproitsolution2007 I believe it was at about 20. Just try it out. If it's too foamy, try reducing it some
Chris Pike it's been great. Our magic number was 12psi. Thanks for the video and the response!
could you use a regular beer tapper and pump on it ?
welllsaiddddd - Yes indeed!
brew it coach
can someone tell me how I can scale this down to a single serving, or at least only one gallon?
Its a 4 gallon batch so divide every amount by 4.
is root beer similar to coke? I mean does it cause any dizzy feeling like alcohol never tried....but heard of it!
yes - it's a non-alcoholic soda beverage. Sweeter flavor than Coke.
what root beer would you say it tasted like a close comparison?
+Bryan Juchemich - sorry, I'm not quite the root beer aficionado to be able to make a comparison. I can say, however, that it turned out pretty damn good.
+Chris Pike c'mon man you never had a A&W's or Barq's commercial root beer ? Ask your son to compare the taste between these vs the one you cooked up :)
Any reason why you are chilling the sugars overnight?
I didn't chill the sugars overnight. I did however, chill the water (with CO2) overnight first. I read somewhere online to do that. I believe it helps with the force carbonating process.
so how can you pour a beer when you have the CO2 cranked to 25PSI? Looks like you have it all on a single regulator.
this was my 1st batch - for a soccer team party. I disconnected the beer line for a day. I now have dual regulators.
What PSI do you dispense root beer at
how different would cream soda be?
+Keith Stacy - not too sure - I've never made cream soda. I'd imagine it would be pretty similar though.
Lol I have those cups
how long was your beverage line ?
about 3 feet
what was your serving pressure? 25 psi?
i'm sure serving pressure was similar to beer at about 10psi
did you ever later the recipe?
+Jason Justice - I did not.
Hi it's me Johnathan
what's up dude?
man i bet that was good
Yes indeed!
Rootbeer love Rootbeer but not the actual beer
2021 anyone?
what if you do not want 4 gallons
make a smaller batch with less ingredients I suppose
lololoo
Chris Pike I think he meant what would you suggest the amount to use for maybe just 1-2 bottles?
Did you tube delete CRAIG'S video's from your channel? t.up
Not sure I know which one you're talking about?
Yes - no extract!
how much? god..how much would it cost me to hang out and drink root beer until i puke?
So much sugar
It's still way better than high fructose corn syrup, which is the biggest ingredient besides water in most all sodas.
High fructose corn syrup is chemically the same as sugar.
Or i can just go buy root beer
This is way better though.
what if you do not want 4 gallons
