    I know this would be really complicated on the backend to do but if you created a root beer ingredient kit, something simple someone could just purchase a small or large size single thingy, that would be really awesome.

    If you didn't have any of those ingredients in the house, this may be a 200 dollar rootbeer. Worth making a big batch, and giving a lot away as gifts. Good video

    I've heard that sassafras is fine to use internally, that was a big part of old fashioned root beer, but was banned because MDA (an hallucinogen) can be extracted from it. So, it's not dangerous in it's plant form but it can be made into a drug so it's hard to get.

      Ive used Sassafras from mountain rose herbs and its been perfectly fine and tastes like actual root beer.

      Thanks for clarifying, that’s why I can to the comments. I was sure you could make sassafras tea. I remember when I was younger, older relatives pointing it out to me in the forest saying they used it for a tea.

    Be careful with the molasses and dark brown sugar, I replaced the dark brown sugar with light brown sugar and replaced half the molasses with maple syrup and the molasses still ABSOLUTELY KILLED the flavour unfortunately, dominating all of those subtle beautiful layers of goodness. I also found that 1oz/30ml syrup was way sweet enough for a 11oz/330ml serving.
    The website recommends 1 part syrup to 4 or 5 parts soda water which is double what I found palletable, and I have a sweet tooth! Better flavour but cloyingly sweet and acidic at this ratio.
    Hmm, luckily I only made 1/4 batch so didn't waste the small fortune I spent getting the ingredients to make this. I recommend you do the same.
    Next time I'll use date syrup or maple syrup in place of most of the molasses (like 7/8ths!) maybe add a vanilla pod too. I'll also reduce the decoction down by half before adding half the amount of sugars and acids, keeping it at a 1:1 syrup ratio.
    I did split the decoction into 2 batches and used erythritol in place of the white sugar in 1 batch, adding some potassium sorbate to preserve longer, taste wise there was no difference.

    Is sassafras really that toxic tho or is it that you can't recommend it for liability reasons? Our ancestors seemed to have relied on it heavily. I'm not far from Wayne national and there is an abundance of sass. The leaf and twig of sassafras is by far my favourite herb for sore throats. Very mucilaginous and the terps are not unlike fruity pebbles.
    Love for 🏔️ 🌹🙏🏻

    • @mountainroseherbs
      @mountainroseherbs  Год назад

      So glad it was helpful! While I haven't tried this with powdered mushrooms, I don't see why that wouldn't work. I'm thinking you may want to play with your ratios a bit and will also likely have to use cheesecloth to strain your liquid unless you don't mind having some sediment at the bottom from the powders. If you try it out, let us know how it goes! Happy crafting! - Gracie

    Mountain Rose Herbs promotes Sarsaparilla root in their recipe but they never have it available in their store... and you so too can use Sassafras in root beer. I’ve used it from Mountain Rose Herbs and I’m typing this right now... that said nice tips on the natural dark coloring I’ll have to try that next time. My biggest issue was the color. Would you say the chaga or toasted roots provided the most color change?

    What changes would need to be made to this recipe to make a brewed soda, carbonated by yeast? And could it be adapted to an alcoholic brew at that point maybe? I think a root based root BEER would be kind of cool. Been trying to figure that out for a few years off and on, mostly off lol
