  • To help you score lower, I have prepared a short game/mastering hinge lesson today. For those of you who tend to get confused on how the wrists move, today’s lesson will be an important lesson to watch! You will end up with a great understanding over how the wrists move. This will complete your full swing and also help you get more up and downs around the greens.

Your instructional videos are always so helpful. I practiced this in my backyard and then before playing yesterday. It felt good but I wasn't completely confident I had practiced sufficiently, but then on the second hole I found myself in a position where I needed to chip over a bunker to the green and needed a good one. So, I thought - try it! All I had in my mind was 'think of the penguin' and I had a brilliant result - holed out! That gave me a big confidence boost and I used 'the penguin' several more times in the round with very nice results (although not as lucky as the first time!). Thank you Aimee , loving this series with your sister.

That was really useful, thanks! 🤩 Actually, some pro golfers call a lateral movement of the wrist "hinging", and a vertical one "cocking", so it got me confused. Now, it seems that the chipping movement requires cocking the wrist as shown here, so I'll pay attention to my handsy hinging.

Does the penguin hands apply to full swings?

Hi! The penguin hands only apply to chipping and bunker shots! Thanks 😊

On the PGA tour many are using a bowed front wrist such as Spieth, Johnson, Rahm. Not many use a cupped front wrist. Couples does, always has. I have tried both, while neither is anywhere near foolproof, cupped like Freddie works better for me. Cupping the front wrist moves the club up and open, bowing it moves the club away from the target and closed. Scientists who have studied chipping claim no wrist action at all is the most consistent way to control the shot if the ball is sitting in a good lie. In the rough maybe not.

Does this work inside 15 feet from green?

If you don't have to make a big swing, meaning the shaft in the backswing is lower than hip high, you probably won't have much wrist action going. So, this tip may apply to shots longer than 15' from edge of the green. It depends on how big your swing is! I hope this helps. Thanks :)
