    Where can we buy your cherry trees ? How do we prevent the nematodes?😊

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  Месяц назад

      To keep the nematodes at bay, keep a weed free circle around the tree. The nematodes breed in the roots of weeds. Keep a layer of much over the surface of the soil, nematodes hate that. You can buy the trees from my website. Here's a link buyraretropicalplants.com/product/barbados-cherry/

    I have had this tree for about a year now and it is giving me a fair amount of fruit already. I am in San Diego, CA, and the tree really seems to like the climate. This is one of my favorite fruit trees of all the ones that I have. Thanks for the great video.

      Randy's Tropical Plants since you appear to be pretty knowledgeable about tropical fruit trees, I have a question about another tropical tree, the rambutan. I have been told by all the nurseries in the San Diego area that they will not grow here. I have never been one who likes to be told I can’t do something. So I ordered one on line and it just arrived. It is only about two foot tall but looks very healthy. Do you know what it is about my area that will present a challenge to this tree? I never get frost where I live but it does get cool in the winter. Do I need to take steps to keep it warmer in the winter? I planted it on a south facing wall in a pretty protected area. Can you give me any other suggestions to help this little tree thrive, or are all of the naysayers correct in telling me it will not grow here? Thanks!

    Hi !
    I've got two things to discuss with you.
    1) I just noticed that there's a mild lump on your left bicep, just carefully check it out and see if it's a cyst or just a lump due to some tissue rapture / or blood coagulation at that part.
    2) Pls, instead of using the old camera for the videos, why don't you try shooting the videos with an iPhone 7 or above ? They have amazing lens with AI camera and auto focus. Plus, the sound that it would capture would be stereophonic , while the one in the video was mono when I plugged my earphone in ,plus it doesn't set bright saturation of colour schemes.
    Thanks for your videos, cheers from India ! 🇮🇳

    I live in the Florida Keys and they they grow easily by seed here. I had 10 seeds and seven are growing. But I will say that they took a long time to grow. I have them in full sun in pots. They are about 4-5” tall after a year and I am ready to put them in the ground. Interesting about the Nematodes. Where I work, they have turned it into a long hedge and the only care they give it is keeping it trimmed into a hedge. I can’t wait for the birds to come back to my yard after Irma.

      I have the "Florida Sweet" cultivar. If you grow out those seeds, the viability is low with a sprouting ration in the single digit percentages. Plus, the fruits from the resulting seedlings are too sour to eat. Cuttings are the way to go for sure.

    Great info. Just planted one in Fort Myers. To propagate from cuttings, do you need to pull off all the leaves except those at the tip?

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  3 года назад +3

      Use hardened off greenwood cuttings, (aproximately 6-8 inches back from the tip), and remove most of the lower leaves, leaving several at the tip (3-6 ish). Make sure there are no tender new leaves at the tip. If so, cut them off first. Then remove the lower leaves. The tender growth will just die and rot. I use intermittant overhead mist with the cuttings in perlite, but before I started doing it that way, I used to use seed trays with tall domes, and struck roots in seed starter soil. Both ways work. Not all cuttings will root, so take many more cuttings than what you need. It takes about a month before they will be ready to transplant and harden off. I do not use rooting hormones. Good luck.

    do you also sell air layers/rooted cuttings? shipping on a potted plant would cost too much. Also I am looking for a strawberry tree Muntingia Calabura to replace the one I killed by over fertilizing it last summer , I already have a barbados cherry . How can I hand polinate the barbados cherry? I have buds and flowers on it now but no fruit. Thanks man.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  4 года назад

      Plants are shipped bare root. Shipping is a flat 12.99, no matter how many plants or where you are. For orders over 100 the shipping is free.
      I've got a couple of muntingias. I'm not really a fan of the fruit, to be honest, but they are very productive.
      Barbados cherries produce way more flowers than fruit. As they get older, and larger, they produce more and more. The amount of sun they receive makes a big difference. This tree really needs full sun or near to it to bear heavily.

      They're kind of large and awkwardly shaped. I wouldn't want to swallow one just based on their size and shape. Whether or not they contain cyanogenic glycosides like cherries do, or some other toxins, I really don't know. They aren't actually closely related to cherries at all.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  2 года назад

      There are many sweet cherry-like tropical fruits, but no, true, low chill cherries that I'm aware of. I generally find that low chill versions of any fruit, are usually not very good, anyway. Try Cherry of the Rio grande. That's probably the most cherry like fruit that will grow in Florida. The next most Cherry like in flavor, (but not in texture at all), is grumichama, which is delicious, and very easy to grow.
