You are Australia's answer to Michael Parkinson. You let the interviewee speak, just occasional prompts, know and understand the responses. Absolute gold!
This. So many interviewers talk over the interviewee and it's super annoying. This interview was great. No ego on the part of Cam and he let Michael do the talking and explanations, then followed up with relevant and insightful questions at the right times. This is how interviews should be done.
I agree it's just nice hearing the stories from everyone... Would love a backwards hat Dylan interview as there's a lot of people who are like that in cycling clubs ( me included) 😂
I've been cycling for 43 years, along with running for 40 years, and I would agree. I've seen a lot of training techniques come and go. I not only tried heart-rate training myself for several years (~2010-2013), but I also helped national team athletes do the same back in 1985 and 1986 in Nordic skiing, when heart-rate training zones were just becoming all the rage at the elite level. So to see things shift away from high volumes of low intensity training as he described in his "old days in 2006" to 30% fewer kilometers and interspersed with high intensity training loads using wattage as the baseline metric is quite interesting to me. This is an echo of what the famed 200m and 400m US sprinter Michael Johnson shared in one of his interviews about his training. His coach insisted he spend more time in the weight room to build up his all around leg and core strength, which he didn't like to do, but according to Johnson, that made all the difference in his high end performance. And that's one area that Michael Schaer didn't address. What sort of leg weights program, if any, does he do? I would be curious.
I’ve watched a lot of videos about how training has changed. One of the most interesting takeaways from your conversation is that the old style of training was more fun. This is something I remember about training for triathlons with my father. It was like every session was it’s own competition.
Yes I think that's why it's important (as amateurs that want to improve) you have both. The fun - throw all training principles out the window - rides. And then the rides with structure. Cheers,
Cam, I think you've found your calling here. Interview the pros and get their POV on training/tech and how the sport has changed. You were a great interviewer and Michi was very interesting. I could have watched an hour of this.
I"ve gone the other way, been doing structured training since the early 90's, was very successful in the early days, now I'm older and more about the bigger volume and having more fun, if I had to keep doing the structure I would no longer be riding.
Thanks for sharing Greg, and I hear you. I think ultimately (if you're looking to get the most out of yourself) a blend is best. Some structured riding, but keep your favourite rides in once or twice a week. Then have a solid off season, where you throw all structure out the window! Cheers, Cam
That is one of the most interesting cycling interviews I've seen in a very long time #Chapeau 🎩 You did a really nice job, keeping the questions pertinent and to the minimum. And wow, what a wonderful nice-sounding well-spoken individual Michael Schaer seems to be!! Super insightful and fascinating to watch. Thankyou 👍
Takeaways for me: Everyone needs to treat their riding/training like it's their forever sports, and what is "optimal" is unique to YOU. Trying both sides helps you understand where your happy-place is on that continuum. The best training is the one you do. Amazing perspective. Love it. Love Michael.
This is definitely one of the better interviews with a pro cyclist on youtube. Good questions and relevant answers and information re what has actually changed. Quality content Cam, keep it coming. Cheers
Probably the best interview I've seen with a professional cyclist. Really enjoyed this Cam. He basically said what I've been wondering. If all that structured training has taken the fun out of it for some people. Just getting back into cycling the last few months after years off and I think for me I need a bit of both. I'm training so I can be better on those fun days. But some days I just gotta go out and ride the way I want to. Its nice to hear he how he has actually improved his numbers compared to his 20's. Something for me to shoot for as well.
I really enjoyed that. Cycling appears to have become very, very, commercial, and very sanatized. As soon as big business gets involved the fun is replaced by seriousness. I wish "Michi" all the very best for the future.
cycling isnt really big business though, best pro cyclists have a salary per year that is likely similar to the best footballers salary for a week. A lot of the young guys now are also doing "crazy" attacks, and making racing less controlled than a decade ago.
This is excellent. I'm 55 now and I stopped racing at 35. I had to change my approach on training, eating, drinking, etc. over the years to be able to stay with the young guys.
Thx Cam and Michael. Outstanding interview. Michael has a wealth of experience and is introspective. The interview brought all of that out. Congratulations.
Great to get an experienced Pro Domestique for a sit down.....Quality concise questions & Michi was very comfortable and candid in his answers - Wonderful Content which ties nicely into Your RCA efforts🚴♂👍
Fantastic interview Cam! I mean everything, the camera setup, the mood, your interviewing style and of course Michi's unique and composed perspective. Looking forward to more of these. Cheers mate!
Really interesting to hear that 'old school' training (which is probably how so many of us bunchies still ride) was much more fun but much less effective.
Wow. Mate, this could well be the best video you have produced. Thoroughly absorbing and insightful. What an amazing opportunity you've been given with this trip. Well done, well deserved, looking forward to heaps more 👌 Also...dude, you got DROPPED!! 😄
This is very important interview in terms of education of the cycling process! It’s not some “IM A COACH LISTEN TO ME”, it’s some serious piece of advice to listen
Cam, what an interview! You just let him speak, no interruptions and he seemed so at ease. I was hooked on what he was saying on a topic that's not always the most interesting
Fascinating interview, great to hear from a pro who has seen this “flip” of the coin and the training changes over time. Lovely person as well, it’s great to see such a structured athlete, thanks for sharing!
Awesome content mate! I’m an amateur cyclist and really enjoying ur content so far as I’m new to the entire world of cycling and I’m learning lots of new things here. Cheers from sunny Bulgaria!
What a great dude, we need to hear more from him. An unsung star of the peleton much like the great domestiques and lead outs of renshaw, oss, de gendt and declercq. It was a geat interview too cam. 👍
Great video and interview. I was talking about this with someone recently and how "easily" it is to do things right these days vs the old days. Take someone who has chosen good parents, give some desire and dedication and passion for the bike, then throw in the internet and how quickly you can actually get some answers and guidance, and game over. No experimentation, no drawing up a training plan over years of trial and error, you are basically right there after 5 minutes of absorbing. Nutrition? Answers right there. Bikes are all more than capable even at mediocre levels, it's how easy it is to get it right from an early age. We're seeing a result of the technology driven generation hitting the peloton and even the local levels. It's great to see from a fan standpoint, and I appreciate the new stuff as I've ridden enough hours to see the learning process unfold.
Have stumbled across your channel from other cycling videos. I’ve never been so enthralled by an interview with a pro. Schär is so down to earth and well spoken. Thanks for interview, really great job - super insightful. Look forward to the next one.
Words Of wisdom. This is why I don’t do hard workouts like I used to and still roll with the A group averaging 26-27mph. 3-4 days Endurance ride is all you need. Keep 200-250 watts.
Just wanted to say a big thanks for this fantastic interview Cam. The best interview with a pro cyclist I’ve seen. I’m a big fan of the channel. Keep up the great work.
And as you see, there are still surprises. In Hawai, not the most structured and disciplined guy won, he "only" finished third (ialthough i wouldn't say, the other two guys are not structured). There are so many interesting new methods, like polarized training, Tabata and so on. Very good interview, really good questions.
Michael seems like a fantastic guy. Great interview. Super interesting! Got a lot out of that. thx! Think I'm going to try to keep my Z2 rides in the 160w range instead of trying to keep over 200w's to look good on strava.
Absolutely outstanding interview Cam 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 this guy is easy to listen to especially when your asking all the right questions Cam..... you need to do more Cyclist interviews 😍😍😍 best I've seen in a long time 👌🏻

Michi was very open and honest too, which makes life a lot easier! But cheers for the kind words Paolo
I agree it's just nice hearing the stories from everyone... Would love a backwards hat Dylan interview as there's a lot of people who are like that in cycling clubs ( me included) 😂
MY only tip is to have yourself in the shot as well
I’ve been cycling for approximately 25yrs and that’s the best pro interview I have seen. Great job 👍
Agreed!
i have bikes older than you

He’s a very intelligent, well-spoken guy.
Yes agreed Robert. Also a very welcoming and friendly guy too.

Incredible insight to the pro life then and now. So cool, keep em coming!
Extremely pleasant to listen to Mr Schaer's insights.
That was beautiful! Dude was so sincere and honest!
What a treat Cam - Michi is a lovely chap and you did well as an interviewer. Thanks!
Michi is such a great down to earth easy going guy. Been at the top level for ages and is a credit to his dedication and passion for the sport !
Wow. Great interview. That explains so much. Cycling performance is going through the roof.
This is definitely one of the better interviews with a pro cyclist on youtube. Good questions and relevant answers and information re what has actually changed. Quality content Cam, keep it coming. Cheers
I feel like I just watched a TED talk on cycling. Awesome insightful interview!
Awesome interview with some great points covered between past and present.
He is cool. Very good insight. Your killing it cam. Thank you 🎉.

Never heard of Michi until now but what an absolute gentleman. Great interview and will be sure to keep an eye out for him in the peloton.
I really enjoyed that. Cycling appears to have become very, very, commercial, and very sanatized. As soon as big business gets involved the fun is replaced by seriousness. I wish "Michi" all the very best for the future.

Love this guy, what a lovely humble chap. Great interview!
Thanks for letting him talk and not interrupt. WE NEED MORE OF THIS!!!! thank you!!!!!
Fantastic interview. Great insight into the current state of training in pro road cycling. Chapeau!
Thx Cam and Michael. Outstanding interview. Michael has a wealth of experience and is introspective. The interview brought all of that out. Congratulations.
That was the best answer on a final question! Enjoy the ride And the view, take it all in…
This was excellent insights into Cycling training.
Well done to both……
Great to get an experienced Pro Domestique for a sit down.....Quality concise questions & Michi was very comfortable and candid in his answers - Wonderful Content which ties nicely into Your RCA efforts🚴♂👍

so structure ... and most important ... keep having fun out there peeps 🙂 Thanks for sharing Cam , great interview
That was a great video Cam a true one off inside the Pro training camp 2010 to 2022 loved it all thank you .
Amazing content great to see the work horses of the peloton and how they find a way to keep going! 👍
Really interesting to hear that 'old school' training (which is probably how so many of us bunchies still ride) was much more fun but much less effective.
Loving the BMC content. Gladly they finally gave you the hookup.
Great interview Cam. Love to hear from those veteran pros just how unforgiving the sport is.
Wow. Mate, this could well be the best video you have produced. Thoroughly absorbing and insightful. What an amazing opportunity you've been given with this trip. Well done, well deserved, looking forward to heaps more 👌
Also...dude, you got DROPPED!! 😄
haha, yes I did. Video to come on that!
I've been riding my bike since 1990, so I found this interview fascinating. Fantastic job. Thank you very much.
This is very important interview in terms of education of the cycling process!
It’s not some “IM A COACH LISTEN TO ME”, it’s some serious piece of advice to listen
Very interesting interview! And shoutout to this cyclist that speaks so openly. :) Thank you

Did you manage to ask him any specific questions about his nutrition off camera? By far your best video Cam. Chapeau!
Not specific. I was too busy frothing on his back wheel haha
One of your best vids Cam. Amazing work behind the camera! Hope the trip is going well.
really interesting interview!
Michael seems like a fantastic guy. Great interview. Super interesting! Got a lot out of that. thx! Think I'm going to try to keep my Z2 rides in the 160w range instead of trying to keep over 200w's to look good on strava.
