Abandoned at a young age by her mother, Aoi Tsubaki has always possessed the rare ability to see "ayakashi"-supernatural spirits that dwell in the Hidden Realm, a world parallel to the human one. Raised by her grandfather, Shirou Tsubaki, who shared the same gift, Aoi learned how to coexist peacefully with these enigmatic beings. Shirou, a kind and wise man, taught her the importance of treating ayakashi with respect and understanding, often using his culinary skills as a means of forging bonds between the two worlds.
Tragically, Shirou's sudden passing leaves Aoi alone to navigate the complexities of life with her unique ability. Now a college student, she carries on her grandfather’s legacy, using her knowledge of cooking as both a comfort and a defense against the potentially dangerous, human-eating spirits. Aoi takes it upon herself to feed the hungry ayakashi that cross her path, hoping that by satisfying their hunger, she can prevent them from preying on unsuspecting humans.
One day, after offering her lunch to a mysterious ayakashi, Aoi finds herself inexplicably transported to the Hidden Realm. The spirit she had fed reveals his true identity: Oodanna, an ogre-god known as the "Master Innkeeper" of Tenjin-ya, a grand and ancient inn that caters to ayakashi. To her shock, Aoi learns that she has been brought to this realm as collateral for a debt her grandfather owed-one hundred million yen. Oodanna explains that Shirou, in his desperation, had promised Aoi’s hand in marriage to settle the debt.
Stunned and defiant, Aoi refuses to accept this fate. Rather than surrender to the life her grandfather’s debt would dictate, she resolves to pay off the enormous sum on her own terms. Displaying her characteristic determination and independence, Aoi strikes a deal with Oodanna: instead of becoming his bride, she will work off the debt by opening an eatery within Tenjin-ya, using her cooking to earn her freedom.
Thus begins Aoi's journey in the Hidden Realm, where she uses her culinary skills to win the hearts of the ayakashi. As she establishes her eatery, Aoi’s meals become a source of comfort and connection, not only satisfying the spirits' physical hunger but also healing their emotional wounds. Through her food, Aoi forms deep bonds with the inhabitants of the inn, each with their own stories and struggles.
"Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi" follows Aoi’s remarkable journey as she transforms the lives of those around her, one dish at a time. Her cooking becomes more than just a way to repay a debt-it becomes a bridge between two worlds, a testament to her strength, compassion, and the belief that even the most disparate beings can find common ground over a shared meal.
