- Brian and Jason take a generic disposable camera with a flash, rip it open and convert it into a taser.
Sincerely: don't do this. We hope you're entertained by our idiocy, but electricity is nothing to be played with. You can seriously injure or even kill yourself. Please be responsible, since we'd like to keep making this series.

Ooh! I like your fractal image!
MisterSquirtle Gaming and Tutorials Mandelbrot Fractals FTW!
In High School, I used to work developing film. Disposable cameras wind the film back into the case but needed cracked open to remove the canister to develop. We would crack them open, remove the film, then charge the flash and toss the bare camera to someone else. Instinct always made you reach and catch it, getting a nice jolt.
hah!
+Thomas Burnelis I'll give you a boost.
That...is a good prank from your good old days.
Thomas Burnelis ha your old
not necessarily, film photography is still a very big thing. Film development is still a growing industry.
@@jdevilgamerdrjuciyfruit1348 I'm 29 and took chemical photography in high school. We had a full lab in the school, we even had bulk film and rolled our own.
only two times this would come in handy
1: to shock your friends.
2: always.
i solemly swear to use this power for mild evil.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good. Thank you for the reference!
Rogueish evil
I was in High school when I learned how to do this and in less then a week every boy was riddled with anxiety from us all randomly shocking each other 🤣 good times!
Back in highschool, our shop teacher decided it'd be a great idea to give us a box of these cameras and get us to dismantle them. Suffice to say we shortly figured out their use as tasers. Even going so far as to solder extra capacitors in to the boards. They also made handy spot welders for thin copper wire.
damn, I wish I had shop. instead I had history
i had about 20 9 volt batteries i would link together and then connect the wires with some needle nose pliers and an exposed chunk of graphite on a pencil (rubber and wood outsides for safety) and the flash would always burn my eyes, it wasn't until later i figured out i was welding pencil graphite to my pliers' metal nose
Why do Americans call it shop? I’m from Scotland, and in the UK we call it “tech” or “techy”
Not tryna be rude, just genuinely curious
@@MalloryKnox. I assume it's short for "workshop."
This can't be safe...time to try it.
And SandDeath24 (coincidental name by the way) was never seen again. They shall forever be in our memories.

Owiegoie27 One month after that a charred body was found in SandDeath24's residence, the body was so badly charred the police were unable to identify the body
I legit got suspended 3 years ago for making this out of an altoids tin

I wish i had known what a capacitor was 20 yrs ago when a 10yr old boy was tinkering around with one and grabbed the capacitor and twisted (connecting the wires). The shock was so hard my fingers seriously felt broken and hurt for the whole day. An experience I have never and will never forget.
ouch.
Little Xel is
Little Xel shocking to say the least, I'm shocked you didn't have to go to the hospital
shocked
Little Xel that's *shocking*
step one :find a disposable camera in 2016
They can be found at pretty much any pharmacy like Walgreens...
you could just buy a capacitor some vira board or bread board and a battery. you'll find a circuit diagram online but its basic as fuck
MexicanBear 2017*
step two :find Walgreens in Europe
try any drug store they are usually at checkout
Brian 2016: Lets go back to doing safe things like drinking.
The whole possibly lethal thing is probably for people with pacemakers or something
Or if you have some damage/illness of the heart. Same Reason why there are deaths when tazzered. That is also the problem if tazzers are marketed as a nonlethal alternative to guns and therefore used more often.
^ Which is why they're called less lethal rather than non lethal.

You can upgrade it by adding a bigger capacitor

Ricardo Rodriguez if you use big cables a car battery and giant capasator makes unsafe lightning rod( do not try,)

Ricardo Rodriguez Would it be possible to use two capacitors?

Yes
In parallel but the charging time will increase too
i really need an uncensored version of this
Yeah me too
The extended outtakes usually are uncensored
What was censored then?
Yeah guys this is the internet the most free place on earth why did you censor yourself?

You know...if I ever had a taser...I would get curious about how it would feel to be tasered...and that's why I don't have a taser....
Sara Mendoza this should be top comment.
Hint, it kinda feels like getting tackled by a 200 pound football player from behind.
tazers id say hurt less than this, ive zapped myself on bareskin, it never made me freak out like that, they must have more amperage or somethin, i doubt its safe
On relatively weak tasers bought at Walmart, it feels kinda like extremely fast vibration on a part of your skin, on a police grade taser gun it feels like your entire body goes into paralysis for a couple seconds (which is pretty much does)
So many people including me would do this its shocking
"lets go back to something safe... like drinking" Ah that's just great
I'm totally making one of these with my friend today, I'll report back if we don't die.
three weeks later... did you die?
AsianTheDomination yes
Yeeeeeeah..... he's dead.
I'm alive. Just sick lol
Segeric you've got... ELECTRO FLU!!
I dont know how many times I have rewatched these episodes
It can't be lethal, but it sure does hurt a fucking lot, I'll tell you that.
it can
Add big capacitor
Use bigger battery
Aim for the neck
I doubt skin would have a low enough resistance to allow enough current through the heart( apx 80mA)
with the electrodes close together it's "relatively" safe. the current only flows between them, and doesnt penetrate much. (the reason why tazers make people cramp up fall over, and stun guns usually dont) but keep in mind that this is a potent DC shock of ~300V, not unlike defibrilator. that can indeed be very dangerous, if it flows through the body. (say from one hand to the other)
I'd probably be lethal to someone with a pacemaker
It's completely possible for this to be lethal. It all depends on the path that the current takes, skin resistance, contact points, etc. As a localized shock to your forearm,it's probably fairly safe. What you don't want,is for the path to go across your heart, like say,a shock from one hand,up your arm, through your chest (across your heart) and back down the other arm. Those capacitors can be charged to over 300Vdc,and can deliver a fairly high current peak. Use the 'one hand rule' when tinkering, and you should be mostly okay.
oof. Well, I'm glad I now know about the "one hand rule".
Damn . . .
+The Modern Rogue got shocked by it once when taking apart, If you know how a dead leg feels (if you sat on it for two long) imagine that 4x stronger going up your arms... Feels freaky
+PaddyDoesTech it feels like your insides of your arms were replaced with sand for a second
yea if you had a pace maker it would kill you
It would be cruel to strip the whole wire, charge it, then toss it to a friend...

Ohhhohohooo PURE EVIL
Time to try
As a young adult, in the late '80s, I worked at a photolab. That's where I learned the joys of shocking your friends with disposable cameras. I was visiting my dad and he had a disposable camera for me to take to work with me. I showed him how to expose the contacts coming from the capacitor. First, I was amazed that he wanted me to shock him a second time. A short time later, my little sister came home, he called her over and shocked the crap out of her, without warning. And lastly, the evening ended with my sister and I trying to explain why this was assault and he should never do this to someone without warning.
How did I miss this the first time. Glad that this has its own channel now.
oh man the memories, i was making one of these in the 4th grade and accidentally shocked myself while disassembling it. sent my whole arm numb for 5 minutes. half an hour later my dog barked and i shit myself
When i was like 9 my neighbors were like 12 and 16 and the older brother terrorized me with this
So if that's a AAA, imagine retrofitting a 9V onto that sumbish.
I actually used the flash circuit and some buttons, wire, and solder to make a flash gun. Essentially I hot glued it to a plastic gun and put a trigger on it. It's a reusable flashbang gun. In the process of making it/while using it I shocked myself 5 different times in 4 different places on the circuit board, promptly coating the leads with hot glue after each shock. I still found a new place to accidentally shock myself.
Funny thing is, I discovered this before even watching this vid... Had an old disposable camera that ran outta film a few years back... Messed with it a bit (fully intact), and kinda thought to myself "If I can hear it charging, that must be a crap-ton of power..." Eventually managed to take it apart, and futz with it a bit... At first, learned of a contact that would close the circuit to the flash, because the flash wouldn't trigger after the film ran out, and the "take photo" button became useless... That was kinda fun for a while... Then I learned about the same thing you guys did... Never got around to actually doing the screws or nothin', just that I could short out the capacitor with a screwdriver.
(On a side note, I'mna look up WHY the cameras make that high-pitch noise when charging... Parts vibrating, or what?)
The noise is because of the high frequency pumping transistor that takes the DC from the battery and switches it on and off very fast into a transformer where you need either AC current or pulsed DC to create the fast collapsing magnetic flux in the transformer core to boost the voltage. Once it's boosted it gets stored in a big capacitor . Once you press the snap button BAM. So that's simplified a bit but you get it. It's a hardcore shocker!
I love your channel and its pretty cool how you guys still find time during the day to thank your fans
Found out I don’t have insulated screw drivers.
@@FrancisR420 U made my day. ;O
I did it with my finger...
Not my smartest decision
I have already opened a disposable camera and played with it, and well... guess what... I touch the fucking metal shit on it by accident when it hadn't discharged yet and it hurt like a fucking 1.2 inch wide needle going in my body and my blood stream, and it hurt for about 25 minutes... Man I'm dumb sometimes
It's AWFUL, right?
of all bros bro omg me to, when I was 8
Holy shit, they still make those things?!
Yeah, and they're more expensive than I would have thought.
KrazeeCain I know this is old as hell now, but disposable cameras like this are now commonly used in long haul trucks to take pics of an accident. Most will have one or two in the glove box. Disposable cameras don't exactly corrupt, nor can the photos be easily edited, and are cheaper than a digital camera... Spend $30 on a camera and probably never use it, or spend $7 on a camera and probably never use it.
Memories of me dismantling these kinds of camera as a kind and finding out first-hand that those things can actually shock you.
I love this channel, its like how to be MacGyver and each video is a lesson
On my 6th grade week long class field trip me and all my idiot friends did this. We just basically ripped the camera apart and shocked each other all week. God we were so dumb back then...
I want my new ringtone to be one of Brian's signature strings of bleeped curse words.
I touched a mufflers when I was three still haven’t bounced back
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a disposable camera.
Jimmy Pepper around 2 years ago when you watched this
you don't get out much do you?
Brian is like a smart kid in an adult body
I love Brian's face of genuine concern
Soooo happy I found your channel!!!! You guys rock!! Love from Canada!
In grade 9 science for physics, we had a Van de Graffe generator (or at least I think that's what it was called) that worked with a rubber band and we all stood on chairs holding hands. The person at the start put their hand on the generator and I (being at the end) was told to touch the ceiling where there were little metal beams running across. You can all guess what happened next and it wasn't comfortable. Before this run though the guy at the start had too little padding on the bottom of his shoes and his foot was on one of the bolts so that was a fun day.
you are the spark in my life
When I was in my teens, I was taking apart a disposable camera. Long before this was even known about them. And the top part of my middle finger pad touched something and gave me the WORSTTTT shock of my life!
20 years ago got stung trying to figure out how these cameras worked never look it up to figure out was was it till now
Subbed, this channel is awesome
I've been waiting for these since Hacking the System
I worked on an old tube radio, replacing its power unit and for that reason I had to build and install a new capacitor bank. The original capacitors were still good but me and my coworker decided to only use them for testing purposes, as they had started to become dry. The capacitors had to be installed on the Mains side of the power unit, were the voltage is high, we're talking 400V here. For testing purposes we attaced the new bank designs prototype, complete with the old capacitors into the new power unit, plugged it in and started our measurments, seeing if everything worked just fine, despite the fact that the old capacitors were a little less then optimal. To our surprise, the capacitors were performing much better then we expected. Too good for me infact.
Clumsy me, trying to measure something near the Power Unit (I actualky don't remember much from the actualy incident XD), bridged one of the capacitors with one of my hands. Just one. Wasn't so bad, if you let out the fact my hand yanked back on its own and I could not feel it for 15 minutes flat. I am just glad I really just bridged a capacitor, since they don't put out much amps, I could have done more damage to my hand then having a numb hand for 15 minutes.
I discovered this trick when I was eight years old...I was taking a part One of these disposable cameras and Messing around with the flash when I accidentally touched the capacitor.... It gave me a shock that I will never forget it's actually worse than a store-bought stun gun because of all the current... Store-bought stunguns are usually 50,000 v or 100,000 v it can be higher or lower depending on which model you buy but the current is very low it's in the Ma range.... Which by no means is comfortable but not dangerous...but the disposable camera flash circuit charges that capacitor to 330 V at a much higher current.... It's enough to spot weld wires and Blow holes in a pop can when discharged.... After that I started to collect all of the capacitors that I could get from these flash units and wind my own high-voltage transformer's to make a souped-up version I connected the capacitors in series and parallel so I could raise the voltage to 1000v and increase the overall capacitance.... It was a fun little project that worked very well.... I would definitely recommend trying this if you're interested in electronics just be careful and don't forget to incorporate a blead resistor across the terminals of the capacitor bank so you don't accidentally leave the capacitors fully charged when not in use....
I love this one cuz we totally did this when we were kids at camp
I remember when i was a kid, and i used to disassemble old tech gadgets to salvage motors and components. Once i found an old camera, and i had no idea what a capacitor was.
It was a huge mistake, i discharged it with my fingers. It left holes on my skin.
I can still feel the pain everytime i see a capacitor. Ouch.
"Safe things like drinking" LOL loved that.
Lets get ElectroBoom to see this!
Hey if anyone is interested in how the camera even achieves a spark like that, you may notice the coil of wire on the camera circuit in the beginning of the video. This is actually a small transformer that will produce a much higher voltage when AC passes through it. Since the battery outputs DC and the capacitor charges it as well, the rest of the flashing circuit is a DC to AC converter and then an AC to DC converter. The former will between the battery and transformer and the latter will be between the output coil of the transformer and the capacitor. If you want your taser to charge faster you may try replacing the current capacitor on the board with one of a slightly smaller capacity. This way the cap will reach full voltage faster!
I love you guys! I watched every episode of hacking the system and was super sad when you guys could not show us how to make this :( But now my life is complete and I can die happily ;)
Definitely gonna make this when I hang out with my friend next time! Favorited so I remember
This is my fav video so far
When I was a kid I took apart a disposable camera and f***** around with it outside the casing and got shocked the fully charged capacitor it f****** hurts like the son of a b****. Props to both of y'all for putting up with full and or near full charges
I want that on a T Shirt “let’s go back to safe things... like drinking” lol
One of my dads friends made a rail gun out of disposable cameras and didnt expect it to be powerful. It went through several walls (pretty sure cinder block but may be drywall) nearly hitting someone and he was kicked out of his college.
I have a amazing childhood story about these cameras
RC MAD same
This was one of my favorite things from the show, gotta try it!!!
Im an electrician and have been hit by 277 volts. Did have a coworker attempt to discharge static from 4160v with a piece of wire, well one the knives didn't disengage on the breaker and when he hit the lead he caused a direct short and blew the wire up in his hand. Somehow he lived with only minor burns to his arm from the arc flash.
oh my friends and I used to do this back in middle school was absolutely amazing we used to hide them in each other's bags it was amazing
this whole experiment was
-shocking- *_electrifying_*
heh.
The Modern Rogue funny thing is i came bacm to this video after I figured how to do the text effects. plus I happened across a disposable camera...

I remember half figuring out how to do this as a kid and zapping bugs with a smashed up half dismantled disposable camera. Fun times that's how I learned what being shocked really feels like.
The Spirit Monk[e]y finds this video to be shockingly entertaining.
Fun for the whole family :-)
I found out about this the hard way. I liked tinkering and taking things apart. I've used regular tasers on myself and I've never been hit with a shock like that in my life. Especially when you're unaware you're about to get shocked.
god damn this vids are great you guys deserve more views
I love this, I was taught how to do this by pulling out the capacitor and using that.
that was an awesome cussing scene! y'all are usually so composed!
Another way to make family holidays interesting...
"So what else are you going to put in you emergency pack?" I am sure some one will ask someday- "Now that you mention it little Timmy I think I am going to put one of those camera teasers that I saw them make on The Modern Rogue"!!!

i did this but accidentally when i was like 10 years old. i enjoyed seeing how old things were made.
5:30 "dude, hats off for electricians, they are the true heroes of America" I feel this as a reference to Tesla, he was the hero
this was what got me into electronics. i was tearing apart a hand me down broken camera my grandmother threw away, and after i got the back cover off, i went to remove the front, and i somehow(?) grabbed a part of the flash apparatus and shocked the shit out of myself, i was 13 at the time and didn't know much about electronics other than basic logic gates and some binary (family got me a boring ass book about electric theory because my grandfather was an electrician and never had the opportunity to learn the complex stuff, so he wanted me to be prepared for the new world), and i was like 'woah holy shit, that hurt like hell, i wanna try it again' and it made me really want to dive in further so i could build a death ray to destroy me enemies for stealing my trading cards (or something stupid like that) now i'm 21 and i build/fix computers for a living
I gave myself a nasty burn blister on my finger when I was a kid. I liked to take apart, work on, and put back together random electronic things. One of my favorite things was just ripping apart disposable cameras and I burned my finger pretty well on accident one time.
I was a curious kid and I ended up taking apart a disposable camera at one point. I accidentally zapped myself with the thing and also flash soldered a silver necklace to itself.
It hurt.
"I'm hoping I'll get Superpowers" Jason Murphy 2016
When I was 12, I found a old camera and played with the cap, blowing stuff up. At one point I wondered how badly it would hurt and it was even worse than 230V AC from the wall. It was a 330V 100µF Cap.
New crafts project, all of yalls legit self defense weapons made from random things.
I gotta try this, I'm gonna have so much fun
Brian goes full Radar O'Reilly on the full charge
Great video,loving the channel
after seeing the disclaimer im scared... i shocked my self 3 times with that model capacitor fully charged
This is so funny to see. Around 1999 in Boy Scouts we found this out on a winter camping trip. We were shocking the shit out of each other. Hurts pretty bad, at least from what I can remember.
I love these videos
Theres always something hilarious about Brian getting hurt.
When people say it can be lethal, they're referring to the fact that if you have heart problems or a pacemaker and get shocked close to the heart, it's possible for it to stop your heart. Still not likely at all, but not impossible.
when murphy said he hoped it would give him super powers. he might not be far off cuz I got hit by lightning once and it hurt right off the bat but after a few minutes I felt great .. like I had been chosen....by whoever throws the lightning
The voltage saftey limit for VDC is 50v but what you should be worried about is amperage if thats higher than .1 its can be dangerous. The tolerance varies from person to person

I made a taser out of a transformer from a clock radio in high school.
One of my friends got addicted to holding the electrodes one in each hand. Crazy guy.
I'm going to try this on a friend someday
I actually figgured this out on a highschool trip lets just say they got passed around the bus alot as weapons if war for the un supervised 6 hour trip.
I remember I took one of these apart and I got really pissed off because I forgot that the capacitor was charged and I got a really bad shock, so I discharged it with a screwdriver but it was a big a capacitor than here so the people in the Next Room freaked out.
I burnt a hole about a centimeter deep into my finger taking one of these apart about a year ago.
I got shocked once I couldn't let go of the camera until after the charge died down and my whole arm was numb for a while after
I once made an EMP out of the capaciter from a disposable camera. I did touch the leads on the capaciter of a similar size. I lost feeling in my hand for about 10 minutes and screamed a curse in the front of my Engineering class.
I remember making this in high school, I left welding marks all over the chemistry classroom stools
