Pretty common for bassists to use a pick. Unless you grow out some nails, use some acrylic ones or hit hard enough that the string touches your nails, you're not getting the same sound. Also it's waaayyy more convenient for speed. Don't have much experience songwriting but so far I've found better rhythms using a pick, then I practice plucking it
