  • I was so excited with the Mac Mini M2 Pro and gave it the win over the Mac Studio in my first thoughts. Then when I priced out a Mac Mini M2 Pro with some upgrades I started to have doubts.
    You might be stuck thinking of which Mac to buy in 2023 upgrading from an intel Mac or M1.
    In this video, I compare the Mac Mini M2 Pro with the Mac Studio M1 Max base model.
    I add some upgrades and compare these as close as you can get between these 2 machines.
    With today's technology, the 2 machines are absolutely great machines and will perform well for most if not all day to day tasks working from home and 4K editing and photo editing for RUclips.
    Enjoy the video and thank you for watching!

    I chose the M2 Pro Mac Mini. I have a studio display, and two old 1080p monitors that I can hook up to it for added real estate. I chose 1TB hard drive because all my files in total are about 700GB, so I can have full files locally and in the cloud (and I already have an external 1TB SSD for cloned backups). With DOCSIS 4 technology around the corner, I wanted the 10GB ethernet so I'm ready for new network hardware that will take advantage of this. I'm already not taking full advantage of my 1.2 Gig internet plan with my modem that supports 950 MBps max. I do not do video editing, so a solid CPU was more important to me than GPU. I also like, reading in reviews, that the Mini is silent. The issue about no ports on the front, geez can get a 3 foot USB-C extension cable and have the end pointed at you. I have a small anker USB C hub with USB and a SD card slot lying around. It's not that hard to pull out the mini and attach something. Totally a first world problem. Another difference: the Mini is somewhat portable still, making travel with it possible, while I would not want to lug around a Mac Studio. When I visit my sister in Florida, she has a Mac keyboard/mouse and a giant 4K TV, I can bring my Mac mini in my carryon bag and plug into that. This is another benefit that I don't see reviewers commenting on. The Mac Studio is a great machine, if I were doing graphics work that would be my choice, hands down. I love that Apple is giving us more options, at multiple price points. It makes the choices harder, but great to have the options.

    FINALLY a video that compares the base studio to the M2! As a professional photographer and person who struggles making decisions this has been a tough one for me too!😅 I like the more CPU on the Mac mini 2 , and its so cute and small but for pretty much the same price the base Mac Studio also comes with the SD card reader . I guess I’ve lasted this long. Im going to also wait !!

      i know right. its a no brainer this si the question that pros are ASKING. A spec'd up M2 mini is potentially more expensive than an M1 Studio with Max in it and same RAM, plus more headroom on thermals. But against that Studio has no future proofing on upgrades, since RAM and even "SoC" SSD is still not up-gradable, even for someone with a soldering iron.

    • @Allurestudios

      @@bashful228 Right! Like maybe instead of 32 ram they should have made the 24 for $250 on the M2Pro instead of 32 for $500 upgrade then it would have been easier to save $500 and I would have been happy with the 24 gigs!

    I bought the baseline Mac Studio M1 Max with 2 TB of storage at the end of the last year and I don’t regret that. I opted for the 2 TB because I came from a fully equipped M1 mini with also 2 TB and I didn’t want to downgrade here. I buy my stuff when I need it so I didn’t wait for the M2 or M2 Pro to come. To be honest… we all know that there will be new chips and devices every year so of course you can always wait for a better one.

      Hey, PlayStefan misc! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it! Yes, I agree it's best to buy when you need it, just so tempting at times lol. Yes, I wrote the exact thing in a couple comments that there will always be something better, but how much better? We are getting to the golden era where the chipsets are so fast in comparison to the capabilities of some software unless you are running a ridiculous amount of multiple streams of footage or content to redline a machine.

    M1-Max-10-Core has 8 performance cores.
    M2-Pro-10-Core has only 6 performance cores.
    You need to upgrade to M2-Pro-12-Core to get 8 performance cores as well.
    IMO Apple doesn't communicate this good enough.

      Love it!!! Yeah, if I had the Mac Studio M1 Max when it came out and didn't have my Mac Mini M1, I wouldn't upgrade either. It's hard, because the Mac Mini M1 is still good and still fits my needs, and the new Mac mini M2 Pro or the Mac Studio in this comparison are both good to have lol. Just thinking if I give my daughter the Mac mini M1 I can justify the upgrade this year as she is using my old MacBook Pro 13-inch circa 2011... I think lol.

    Good comparison video... Here in Down Under a 32 gb ram M2 upgrade is $600.00, My 2020 iMac 27" i7 32gb ram upgrade cost me $175.00 to do the upgrade myself, My external Samsung T7 2Tb Shield was $237.00 on sale... Apples extravagant upgrade prices are a major consideration on purchasing a nice work horse..

    • @Elev8Project
      @Elev8Project  Год назад +1

      Hey Brian Greenwood! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it! Yeah, the upgrade prices are a bit intense, especially with the Mac mini and Mac Studio where you can't upgrade anything after. I feel even the M1 is still such a great machine, that everything that is coming out now may only see a marginal performance boost in real-life situations (yes the bench-marks are going to be crazy increases). I mean who today, that isn't in cinema, is editing 8K footage regularly every single week and doing tons of layers editing photos. Don't get me wrong, I was complaining about export times on the Mac mini M1 for an 11min 4k video taking 13mins to export which is much faster than my MacBook Pro 15-inch 2016 which takes double the time. Is it worth $1000 - $2000 more for a marginal boost in real-life situations? Some, absolutely yes lol, most probably not.

      i hope in time the Right to Repair and EU govt can get some traction on Apple’s deliberate strategy to force people into the massive apple tax margins on higher spec’d models in each market segment of Mac products. (and iOS/iPad i guess)
      apple always (like for decades) since the Mac 128K/512K days have gouged high end users as a way to bankroll the business and kept entry machines closer to costs to maximise market share. but now there’s no DYI or 3rd party workarounds they are forcing people to buy ahead of need and from Apple with their highly inflated pricing on RAM and SSD memory. they would have to be one of the bigger RAM and SSD procurers in the world today so their costs would reflect that, their prices are unreflective of that. the opposite even. it’s amoral at best.

    I have a home recording studio for music production and still using a 2013 iMac. I went to Apple Store today with my mind set on the Studio M1 Max with upgrade of 32 gb memory and 1 tb storage. Apple employee recommended Mac Mini M2 Pro and upgraded with same memory and storage. Mini has more CPU but less ports. Both are same price with the extras I added. I use Logic Pro and a lot of plugins. I'm so confused now on which would be better for me.

    • @Elev8Project
      @Elev8Project  Год назад +2

      I think both will be more than capable. It would depend on the peripherals for your setup and the ports you will need to run them. Also, the M2 Pro can only handle 3 displays and the Studio can handle 5. Another factor depending on your setup. If you need something now, I would say the M2 Pro if the ports are enough. Apple might update the Max Studio later this year, so it might be worth waiting for.

      check out the ventilation in the m1max studio, if that does not disturb you (if you record silent acoustic instruments maybe) go for the studio. my 2009 mini is louder compared to this new studio. further pros: studio has twice the memory bandwidth than these m2pro m2 minis and got ports in the front, also an sxdc card port.

And I have some significant memory swap with 8GB. So, 512GB and 16GB of memory should be fine. $1300 is fine until 32GB of RAM and 1TB becomes tempting. But it is true that the basic M2 mini is enough for those who only do email, internet or normal correspondence, for others the M2 Pro is necessary and there you can see that it is actually very expensive, especially if you want to expand it with other options.

In my experience, and the plugins I use editing in FCP, and having other apps I get close and have reached 16GB usage. The 32GB is great for that extra headroom. Also, that depends on what you are doing etc. And Yes the M2 Pro with even my minor upgrades, adding the SSD from 512 to 1TB and upgrading the ethernet, doesn't seem as budget friendly as originally thought.

    I've been using Macs since '92 and for my 1st several Macs I ordered the minimum amount of RAM pre-installed in the computer Apple offered because it was universally understood that Apple unconscionably charged WAY too much for RAM, exploiting the timid and somewhat technology phobic Mac users who didn't feel comfortable buying RAM from a 3rd party vendor and opening up the machine to pop in some SIMMS or (later) DIMMs. Then in the pursuit of ever-thinner designs, in the 2010s Apple decides to start gluing memory to the motherboards of many Mac models. Now with Apples "M"-series SoC processors with the "unified" RAM, Apple is once again in a position to charge an obscene premium on RAM. It shouldn't cost $400 frickin' dollars to opt for 32GB of RAM vs 16GB in a new M2 Pro - equipped Mac Mini. This one pricing decision alone will likely make me wait until the Mac Studio has a processor upgrade to a M2 or M3 chip where would otherwise buy a new Mac Mini right now.

    It's question. I'm using a maxed out Mac mini M1 aud it does surprisingly well with Davinci Resole with BMPCC4K shooting BRAW C4K at 24fps. more cpu and gpu power would be welcome. if doing 3d work I would opt for the Mini M2 Pro with the 12core cpu vs 10 core Studio. Basically same money one has more CPU's and the other more GPU's. different design but same foot print. At least we have good options today unlike in recent years past. i7's that barely edged out the i5's that where same real world as 2 gen before i7's and i5's.. I'll wait for real world testing with Davinci Resolve with 6k and 8k BRAW and let that direct me. my build for the Mini Studio pro would the 12core, 1 terabyte SSD, 10g ethernet for future proof when I get around to a server storage.. though with thunderbolt 3 or 4 you can daisy chain you can live without it for years. honestly I'll probably do a better keyboard from Logitech and more HDD arrays. Cheap $50 keyboards are like $9 keyboards of 10 years ago.. "why did buy this????"

I believe the days of a 1999 (dollar or pound) priced Mac Studio could be numbered. Its also possible a new Mac Pro might start at a lower price level than existing ones and be more at Mac Studio M1 Ultra levels if the rumoured 'Extreme' chip isn't coming. Great analysis! I would love to hear feedback on my dilemma. I have ordered the Mini M2 Pro base with upgraded 32GB memory for $1699 from Apple. I also ordered the base Studio 32/512 with no upgrades from Costco's recent sale for the same price of $1699. At the same price point of $1699, which one would be your preference? For reference, I am a print designer working mostly in InDesign (80% of my workflow is InDesign), Photoshop, and Illustrator. Typical projects include book designs with several hundred pages and several hundred high-res cmyk images. I do not work with videos and I do not play games. Any thoughts between these two machines?

    • @Elev8Project
      @Elev8Project  Год назад +1

      Hey Steve Cooley!!! That is a great question and the dilemma lol. Honestly, I would sway towards the Mini M2 Pro. One being the size factor and fan noise and structure. In regards to performance, I think based on the latest geek bench marks for the M2 Pro edges out the M1 Max in single-core and multi-core scores. But marginally, real world results for what you are doing will vary, but think it would be marginal and be really if you need 5 displays vs 3 displays (Mac mini) and if you need the front ports on the Mac Studio. Personally, between the 2 options, I would go for Mac mini purely based on the form factor. Hope that helps!

    I'm currently running a 10yr old Mac pro and have been waiting for the M2 Mac minis as I'm well overdue an upgrade. I'm now facing the dilemma of whether to get the base model Mac Studio instead of the M2 Pro Mac mini (I want 32gb and 1tb storage) which as you've pointed out takes it to the same cost. I do feel I'm going to go with the Mac mini M2 Pro though. I wasn't planning on spending £2k on this, but it's the only way I'm going to get 32gb which I currently run. I'd be much happier if Apple were only charging £200 for the extra 16gb of RAM in the Mac mini and not £400 (who wouldn't be!). It's a shame the non-Pro M2 Mac Minis only go up to 24gb or I'd be getting one of those instead, but Apple know what they're doing to get the most out of us.

      I have the M2 Pro Mini with 32GB and a Max Studio. Unless you need something that's easier to carry, the Max Studio is a better buy (noticeably better performance on most tasks). I got the Mini specifically for live gigs. It's smaller and has fewer moving parts that might fail. If you decide you need 32GB of ram, get the Max Studio, else you'll be getting less for more. Unless you absolutely need the smaller box that's also safer to move around.

    • @Elev8Project
      @Elev8Project  Год назад +2

      Hey Laser Jakk! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it! I am not too familiar with both software, but that being said I looked them up and think that 16GB of RAM will be enough as its unified memory and will get help when it needs it. That being said, if there is anything to upgrade if you have extra money is RAM or unified memory. You probably noticed I personally would opt to upgrade the RAM over the extra cores and GPU. I think the M1 was great and the M2 Pro is that much better for performance for what I do. The RAM or Unified Memory is something you can't upgrade after the fact and once the software is able to maximize those chipsets the RAM will be a big factor in my opinion. So, personally, I think 16GB will be enough, and if you have the extra cash I say go for it to future proof. Even with my M1 with 16GB of RAM, I can export a 4K video and still check my email and surf the web without my machine slowing down. I hope that helps and let me know what you end up doing!
