I was just telling my sister I need more winter interest in my garden and here is the help I needed. I took lots of notes. I can't imagine how long the editing took, seeing the photo of the plants is so helpful. Well done and much appreciated!!
Amazing video Laura!! I’m telling you she goes above and beyond to teach her audience how to do gardening! I absolutely LOVE HER!! Your amazing Laura!! You have inspired a lot of people including me and I’m only 15! And I’ve being gardening since I saw your planting bulbs in December video!! And now I teach others how to grow their own food on my channel Ultimate Gardening! I love you Laura never let nothing or no one tell you, your not capable!💚
5 years ago I saw my neighbors garden looking beautiful in the winter, which prompted me to start working on mine. I turned to RUclips and there you were. Now after much hard work, I enjoy much more structure year round. Thanks!
Kudos to Ken for providing the still and video visuals of each category and variety of winter interest you described, Laura. It’s lightly snowing in northern Michigan and I’m enjoying my own winter interest on this gray day.
I am in Traverse City. Since you mentioned Northern MI. I've have the perfect amt of ground cover snow, not enough for winter land vibe in all the trees as we did a month ago with the wet heavy type snow when we were dumped on. I am near West Bay, surrounded by trees...I will be shoveling about 2-3 myself. Have a great day!
@@carolynmangipudi9898 , agree, not as heavy shoveling today. And, while out there I marveled at all the winter interest I planted without knowing it was “a thing!”
I moved to NW Arizona from Oregon in the spring of 2021 and I miss the cedars and big old growth firs we had on our property but I was pleasantly surprised to find so many varieties of trees on our new property, including evergreens, eucalyptus, palo verde, cypress, olives, and flowering desert willows. The previous owner planted 100s of trees and shrubs and I'm so grateful for his vision. I'll always be a PNW girl though. 🌲🌲🌲
That’s funny cause 10 years ago I moved from Southern Arizona to Washington State and I was so surprised by the trees here in PNW. I absolutely love all the greenery and atmosphere here, it amazing what you can grow. But I do miss the sunsets in Arizona.
@@wonderwonder30 I can grow so much more here than I ever could in Oregon...including our own food. We lived at the foot of Mt Hood in the rainforest with no sun. I do miss my green forest, just happy to be out if 100 inches of rain a year. 🤷♀️ I'm originally from Walla Walla Washington. 👩🌾
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE This video! So much important info for designing a garden. It was like having a private conversation over a cup of coffee with you and yet I felt like I had just finished an expensive university class
I just love listening to Laura talking about all of the trees bushes flowers and grasses that she loves. Awesome video. Happy Holidays everyone 🎄🎄🎄🤗🎄🎄🎄💓💕💞
This video was a wonderful gift! You put so much into this one. Definitely not just for beginners. I've been gardening for 40 years and I learned so much today. Thank you.
Thank you for making my days. Sharing coffee with you everyday not only makes me smile but your knowledge shared has made my garden improved every year.
This was the best video for a frost covered Saturday morning! What a way to look out into the garden and visualize what I can add this next season! Thank you for all the information. ❤
Thank you Laura and Aaron, I desperately needed this video. This is our first winter in our new home. The home we moved out of has been in our family for 7 generations. I grew up in that home and knew every single plant that was on our property. It took decades for me to grow the perfect flower beds and gardens that displayed beauty all 4 seasons. Now I am starting over, there are some beautiful spring and summer flowering plants on our new property but there is absolutely zero winter plants. I am taking detailed notes and making a list of all the winter plants we need, and saving every penny.
In Alabama our winter interest consists of dried up hydrangea blooms and mud from all the rain so seeing all those evergreens covered in snow was a dream. ❤
Good morning, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 🎅🎄🤶🇺🇸 I'm on vacation, but still wanted to say HI and Happy Gardening and Christmas to Our Garden Answer Family 👩🌾👍♥️
This video is AMAZING and so needed! I feel like it is much harder to find info. on different species of evergreen trees. I feel like more ppl would plant trees if this information was as readily available as the blooming shrubs and perennials. Thank you! ❤
You can just hear her excitement in her voice and her little giggles when shes talking about all her favorites. I'm excited bc shes excited. She just makes me smile. Loved this video. Awesome job ❤❤❤
I’ve been gardening for decades, but I’ve never focused on “winter interest” but I need to. And now you’ve given me the information I can use to do just that. Thank you for this great comprehensive view! What a great topic!!!
Dear Ken- My rescue Lynx point Siamese kitten LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the bird feeder video! He was camped out on the couch for the week with a blanket and a cup of hot Catnip tea and thought Garden Answer's birds were the best, especially the great audio! Savi says, "Thank you!" 🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄
This Winter Interest program is the best. Educational and Beautiful. When you talked about Oregon Grape I was thrilled since my home came with it Ranch Style built in 1955. I have now lived here in Silver City New Mexico 5 years. A Pinon Tree in the far back yard is a Specimen to treasure.
The entire side of my front yard is full of Heather. It just started blooming this week and will bloom until about mid-April. Love seeing the light purple poking out of the snow.
Thank you! I LOVE these deep educational videos. I watch them over and over and over to get ideas for my small garden. Especially grateful when you discuss pros and cons, saving us time and money from learning the lesson ourselves, when a plant may not be the best fit for our space. You all are the best!
This is so helpful for me. We just put in a new sidewalk and will be remodeling this spring. After everything is done, I will have a flower bed to re-design and this video will be so helpful as I figure out how to provide more evergreen interest into the garden and to save me work as I turned 70 this year. Thanks Laura!
What a superb crash course in Winter Interest, especially the evergreens you list! Thank you for the years of experience and massive amount of research you invest into these videos!
As I'm watching this video, I'm looking out at my front yard and seeing a flock of juncos enjoying the many plants I leave for winter interest and forage. They especially enjoy the echinacea and rudbeckia, it's a beautiful sight to see. I started adding more plants for winter interest a few years ago after you answered a question I had on Instagram about whether I should leave my lemonjade sedums up for winter, so I have you to thank for helping me transform my garden. Thank you so much for all you and Aaron do!
I appreciate and I am so grateful for what the Lord has blessed me with so I am not complaining.. 🌟 I am single, 60 yrs young and I have come a long way in my very very small space I have to garden in. My home sits on the corner so I have lawn all around my home where I can’t plant in because that is the “city” lawn as they say past the sidewalk so I keep that beautifully mowed so when I look out my windows I see houses all the neighbors and some .. who do not care if they even mow. When I purchased my home 20 yrs ago it was not like that.. ANYWAYS, I would so love to look out windows and see evergreens and birch trees, green lawns or a lane lined with trees.. as I age I am finding that brings me comfort and joy to see nature.. I get compliments all the time in the summer how beautiful all my flowers are and how I decorate my porches.. I am thinking of selling, to get a one floor home somewhere, where I can get a little more nature when I look out my windows.. any suggestions from anyone.. maybe a built barn (metal) type opened concept, the economy is going down fast.. I’m stuck on what is smart to do.. Laura I love your place, all these trees and shrubs you’ve shown are so beautiful! Merry Christmas, enjoy your beautiful family and take some time to relax and not worry about videos, you all deserve a rest!! 🎄❄️🎄🤍
Love the winter interest videos. Was so surprised when at the very end you had included the photo I sent of the bald cypress i sent. Had forgotten sending it. Really started my day off right. Never thought it would be a part of your video. Thank you!❤❤❤

Hey guys this is a fantastic video! We planted Witch Hazel for winter interest and to feed the Anna's hummingbirds that stay all year long here in the PNW. Planted a Prairifire Crabapple (with persistent fruit) this year and the heavy wet snow bent it completely over. I knocked off the snow and luckily it bounced back, phew! Love the Arctic Fire Red Dogwood. Deer nibbled at it this summer but didn't too much damage and it looks beautiful right now.
Good morning Laura and Aaron! Thank you much for this video. My part of N.C. gets very little snow so it is exciting to see yours and others. Even when you are not actually "out" in your garden you always provide a lovely video for us to watch and the Hartley as your background is terrific! Hugs from N.C..❤️
I’m not a beginner and have a good Winter display and I STILL took notes! Thank you Laura for reminding me of specific trees I forgot about (Royal Frost Birch for one) and adding a couple shrubs I had not thought of to use for winter interest. Now I get to go shopping!
Thank you!!! This video could not be more perfectly timed. Turning my attention to winter interest and planning for more structure in the garden as the new year approaches. I appreciate you all so much ❤. Hoping your holiday season and new year are restorative and filled with joy!
This is what I'm working on in my garden. There weren't any trees on our property when we moved here 3 years ago... I love the blue & dark green evergreens. I wish they weren't so expensive but totally understand why they are... I'm also working on shrubs that I can also use for bouquets for my cutflower farm. I love when you mention when things need a ton of water because we get an average of 70 in of rain per year & have clay soil so it holds onto every bit of it!
I was a bit down today due to a fire in my house last week. What a mess but everyone is safe. But tuning in to your channel always lifts the spirits and this was no exception, I have just a small Facebook page on gardening, mostly friends and acquired new friends. I am always preaching to them about following your RUclips blogs. I had to post the link for todays issue. What a wonderful tutorial for planting for winter interest. I really need to add some winter interest to my yard and some of my flower gardens. It would really help me get throughtheseold blue cold winter's in NE Oklahoma. Thank you for sharing all these beautiful evergreen trees and shurbs and trees. Laura your the best.
Very informative video. We lost the majority of our old white spruce trees during the past few hurricanes that blew through Atlantic Canada. I am now researching evergreens that can withstand our harsh coastal winds, and this video has given me lots of ideas. Thanks, Laura!
Wow Laura, your ability to convey the info you shared covering all of the categories is incredible!! You have a mind like a steel trap, as they say. So many good ideas and examples of winter interest, very inspiring! I just LOVE your enthusiasm, it really helps to motivate me. Merry Christmas to you, Aaron and your entire family.
Laura I just enjoy these “list” videos so much! I repeat listen to them! have learned so much, for example that listing of crabapple trees! I looked it up while you were talking! I have gotten such good ideas for my garden that I might not have thought of. So informative! Merry Christmas! 🎄
We just planted a dappled willow this year that grows pink leaves at the end of branches that look like little flowers in the spring, and the branches are red in the winter! It's replacing this ancient ratty fir tree/shrub we took out, and the new willow is just a baby but I'm so excited for her to get HUGE! 😍
Hi there from Norway 🇸🇯 ! After hearing you talk about Norway spruce several times I had to check what that is... 😉 And it's what's called "common spruce" here, so that totally makes sense ! 🤗 Love all the blue spruces you showed in the beginning of the video, and especially the low creeping or spreading one ! 🎄🎄🎄
I really enjoyed this video. I have been following you for a couple of years now and have seen all of your past videos back to your previous home. It is always helpful for me be reminded of plants/shrubs/trees/grasses you have discussed in past videos. The comfort you have developed for being in front of the camera is wonderful. Have a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year. I can hardly wait to see what 2023 brings to your home.
My ❤ jumped when you included Bosnian pine trees. I am from Bosnia, gardening in zone 7, was never sure if I can grow any Bosnian trees. You have given me hope. Thank you.
I wish I had the room to plant them all! 😍 Thanks for all of the information, Laura. Your enthusiasm is infectious! Awesome editing, Ken! No wonder it took a while. Now to decide which ones to plant next year... Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone in our GA family! 🎄❤

Love, love, love this type of video! You provide such great content and inspiration for us! It gives me ideas of what to put on my list to plant. Thank you Laura and Aaron for all you do!❤️💚
God, you did really good when you designed and blessed This family. But you blessed the rest of us by sharing her love of gardening. Can you just imagine what she will do in Your garden. Thank you to you and all those involved.
Awesome video GA Team! Well worth the "long" wait! LOL You are so nice to keep us informed but post when you can! We will be here patiently waiting, always.
We had a crabapple tree when I grew up in the Gresham/Sandy area. No clue what type but the crabapple were quite edible (VERY tart but yummy). Mom always canned pickled crabapple that were served at holiday or fancy meals. We also had a very tall, slender cedar tree which I adored climbing until I got too mature to fit in between the branches near the top. It was my favorite place to go to read books in solitude.
Good Morning GA from Seffner Florida. I’m very envious of all the evergreen trees that you grow in your area. They are just so beautiful. The snow is awesome too. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Another spruce variety that I like is the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. It stays small, about 6' tall by 4' wide. It's very compact and cute. Perfect for a small space.
I bought one for my sister but she changed her mind about planting it, so I have it sitting in a container on our terrace. Right now I have some mini dot lights on it. Very cute.
This was so nice and educational for me. I have a mostly shady front yard and mostly sunny backyard. I live in a big city with houses very close together and a 25' wide lot, so not much space, but I think I can use many of these offerings in it! I paid a landscaper alot of money to do our front yard, but unfortunately she planted many items that need alot of sun, so here I am having to move it all to the back and replant the front! So happy you did this video as I will be able to use many of your suggestions, especially the Artic Fire Dogwood plants. They will be beautiful in front close to the house. So happy they like shade! One request, when you ask people to send in their photos, could you show some smaller type homes too? I know it wouldn't be as expansive or showy, but many of us have a smaller type home and could use them as inspiration. Thanks again!
I’m fortunate enough to live in a place where the willows grow wild. They are always such a joy to me to look at when driving around. Reds and yellows.
Excellent video packed with info! Perfect timing so I can look at our snowy yard and see where it would be nice to add things. Now I need to watch again and take notes! 😊♥️
Thanks Laura, Aaron & Team! So much excellent and informative information in today's video. Well done. I love my small garden here in Zone 9b and look forward to my evergreen Clematis and Hellebores for winter interest. If I had space, I would love some Winterberry, Mahonia & Witch Hazel.

Waiting on a snowfall to assess where to add some more interest!! Your gardens and all your info is so useful no matter what size of gardens we have!!
Thank you.
Kudos to Ken! Great job! Thank you!
I absolutely love this video for a while. All the winter interest is awesome.

Thank you Laura , the city where I live, it has snowed and I decorated my Christmas tree . Love your plants , too . Merry Christmas to all !
Thank you so much for this video. I am redoing my beds this spring, and this is going to be a great resource to look back on.
God, you did really good when you designed and blessed This family. But you blessed the rest of us by sharing her love of gardening. Can you just imagine what she will do in Your garden. Thank you to you and all those involved.
❤Amazing content. Thanks Laura. My yard is full but so enjoyed seeing all these amazing plants.
Awesome video GA Team! Well worth the "long" wait! LOL You are so nice to keep us informed but post when you can! We will be here patiently waiting, always.
Can’t beat winter berries! Trying to get more in the garden!😊💖🙌
I was thinking that too Albert. We have several in Zone 7.
Your tree and plants in your background and in the Harley is so satisfying. Just lovely. Thanks for your information and thoughts on each plant.🎄☃️❄️🌲
Such a great, informative video. Also looking forward to an evergreen pruning video. Thank you for all you do. Peace and joy to you and your family!
Hello Lori, how are you doing today?

Thanks Laura, Aaron & Team! So much excellent and informative information in today's video. Well done. I love my small garden here in Zone 9b and look forward to my evergreen Clematis and Hellebores for winter interest. If I had space, I would love some Winterberry, Mahonia & Witch Hazel.
Those flame willows make beautiful wreaths also. They look good without any embellishments.
