I was at this game. Upper deck, perfectly positioned behind Stockton's winning shot, and I could tell it was on line as soon as it left his hand. As a 14 year old Rockets fan it crushed me, but as the years go on I just try to appreciate the memories, even the bad ones.
Good for you in treating the good the same way as the not-so, as decades went on. As for me, I still treat good as good and vice versa. But I’m not implying your approach is wrong, on the other. And yeah, I have that Upper Deck card of Stockton’s clutch somewhere in the house as well.
The Jazz's best season 64-18 Record, 38-3 at home (10-1 in the playoffs). Had two future Hall of Famers, a great coach, a great supporting cast, and likely the most experience of any team the Bulls played in their 6 finals trips. Hence why the they're the only team the Bulls had to play twice in back to back finals.
And the Jazz were so close to force g7 and potentially spoil “The Last Dance”. To think of it, if the Bulls lost in 1998, they could have that strong reason and resolve to be back next year - lockout or not.
I remember recording this game live and I had to turn my TV down because of how loud the crowd was thinking that this series was gonna go back to Utah until Stockton took over but that first 3 by Russell down 13 set it in motion and then the ultimate silence to seal their first trip after watching Eddie Johnson hit that buzzer beater in game 4 was crazy to a fantastic series
The Jazz ruined a Bulls vs. Rockets finals matchup in ‘97. This one still hurts as a Rockets fan. The GOAT vs The Dream would’ve been epic! Too bad it never happened… 😢
@@davidduenes7512 At least he and Jazz had two opportunities. GOAT23 and the gang are just too much to anyone in the league, anyway. Wow I forgot Houston was up by 12 with 7 minutes left. The 97' Finals was a classic but I wonder what a Barkley/Dtexler/Olajuwon Finals vs Jordan/Pippen/Rodman finals would be.
I watched this game live as a 9 year old with my uncle and I wonder the same thing today as a 36 year old man🤦🏾♂️ I feel like Houston would've matched up better in 97 while Utah matched up better in 98
The Bulls still win, yet an interesting series more so if Hakeem somehow regained that "prime Dream" in 1993-95, which no accident Houston's championship years.
@@OrionOodama The clutch city Rockets team would've been a more difficult matchup overall w/faster players like Horry, Smith, and Cassell that could run the floor and take the ball to the basket. They lost this series because Stockton dominated the PGs and Barkley was slow on both ends of the floor.
Rest in heaven, Bill Walton! What an amazing soul. Also, Rick Carlisle, a former teammate of his; said Bill Walton was the reason he met his wife; which Carlisle and his wife are still married today!
I'm glad to have found your channel and became a subscriber for all of these wonderful classic games you upload on your channel. Many thanks! One request, Jordan's "Double Nickle" at MSG wearing 45 please 🙂
👍 thanks for the kind words! I generally try to post stuff that's not too common (i think the double nickel game is up on yt) but if you'd like, i'll hopefully be able to get to it. Thanks again
Cassell was part of the Barkley trade along w/Horry that's why he wasn't there. Ironically Kevin Willis seemed to fit the Rockets system better compared to Barkley because he was less injury prone.
That darned moving screen.....arghhh!! But Stockton went ballistic towards the end of this game. Maloney was heavily overmatched with such expectations as a undrafted rookie. Stockton should've been more aggressive like this scoring wise more often in his playoff career.
many people remember john stockton is assist&steal king. but also he is a great scorer. in clutch time of this game, john stockton scored all jazz points.
The problem was Barkley struggling throughout the series, he wasn't a natural fit in the Rockets system because his ISO offense stalled ball movement and he constantly got exploited in the pick and roll. The other problem was Stockton dominating the PG matchup w/Cassell and Smith both not being there anymore.
Everyone wanted the Rockets with their big 3 of Dream, Drexler, and Barkley against the awesome Bulls in the Finals. But the Jazz had other plans. Sweet redemption for the aging dynamic duo of Stockton and Malone, particularly when you remember they lost to these Rockets in 94 and 95.
I was a Bulls fan and didn't even watchthis series. It's crazy to see how bad the Rockets choked this game away. 10 point lead with a few minutes left in the game. The Jazz were really good back then but wow, tbe Dream, Chuck and Drexler all went ghost at the end of the game. Crazy
Barkley wasn't a natural fit in the Rockets system, G5 was what really cost them the series. Even if they had won here it's likely they would've lost G7 anyway.
Tbh I see the Rockets having some of the same problems they had in this series, particularly Barkley struggling on both ends of the floor. The clutch city Rockets team had faster players like Smith, Horry, and Cassell.
Previous highlights somehow not showing the prior play that led to John Stockton's series-clinching clutch. Do these channels spare "the Glide" from embarrassment, or lack of court smarts? No idea. Before this feature, I relied on cousin's storytelling that Clyde Drexler unwisely drove with at least five (5) seconds left even there's no shot lock anymore. Perhaps he's unaccustomed to clutch shots. And I don't remember seeing a game or highlight he made a buzzer-beating, game-winning FG. As for John Stockton, how I wish he made "that" clutch shot g6 of 1998 NBA Finals, spoiling GOAT's previous and now-iconic deuce. He was an inch or two short.
Just remember the Rockets still have won more championships than the Jazz, including beating them first found in the infamous game 5 on the road in 1995.
I’m curious was this Greg Gumbel’s last NBA game he called for NBC? Because I know about 6-7 months later-ish sometime around there he went back to CBS after they got the NFL rights back.
Yeah. You'll notice that Snapper and Bill were still the color guys the next season, but Greg Hammond was the play-by-play man for marquee Western Conference games on NBC.
Rest in Peace Bill Walton you always going to be a good broadcaster

That shot killed the rockets and the fans completely.
Jazz would’ve won game 7 anyway they were too good at home
You can tell Hornacek had the vantage point to see it going in about a second before it does as well

The Rockets collapsed down the stretch in this game. Otherwise we could have had a Rockets-Bulls Finals
