A lot of the tales of madness and unravelling are just guilty myth making by his previous colleagues. I think Syd was a conceptual artist beyond anything the rest of Pink Floyd could understand at that point. A lot of the supposedly insane ramblings are actually references to arcane poetry. Not to say he hadn't also fried himself for a while too, but that gets completely overstated if you ask me.
when way back then i bought the two first albums ...i was - à là fois mixed up - enthoused - charmed - amused - amazed - this guy really had a direct link to ART
I don't think his writings were in any way insane at this time, but he lost the ability to interact with the outside world in any fashion we'd think of as normal. He began to shut himself off from the world and just couldn't find a way back.
Considering how things were apparently unravelling for Syd at this point, the 'Madcap ...' album has many exquisite songs on it. But also some un-nervingly eerie ones. THIS one (+ the arrangement of 'Golden Hair') is 'top-of-the-shop' as far as I'm concerned, as a composition & a lyric + the keyboard part - intensely hallucinatory and most unsettling in equal measure. I feel as if this gives me a bit of a window on how Syd experienced things at the time.
this is better than any solo albums by any other members of the Pink Floyd. It's not even close either. I can see why they were jealous of him and kicked him out
And I stood very still by the window sill. This whole line and vibe is the definition of Pink Floyd. The latter Floyd would come close, but nowhere near the original Syd

Yes very well put my friend
Also Roger Waters said he had Schizophrenia so that could have messed with him a little bit
Thank you for this!

mystic and eerie. syd barrett is an undefinable phenomena of art

I didn't really get Barrett for the longest time. Listening to this again now, I think I finally get it.
