- “Bob Dylan Blues” was written in 1965 and later demoed for inclusion on the “Barrett”, on the Friday 27th of February 1970 at studio 2, EMI studios Abbey Road. This session for the second LP was engineered by Peter Bown, Alan Parsons and John Leckie, with David Gilmour stepping in as producer. This session consisted mostly of Syd demoing new (old?) material including Wolfpack, Living alone, Jigalo Aunt (sic) and “Dylan Blues”. Details of take numbers, false starts etc. are not noted on the recording sheet, but 1 reel of ¼” tape was used in making a 7.5 ips copy tape of the recordings. This was “Taken away by David Gilmore (sic)” on a 7” spool. Unfortunally he (Gilmour) returned and removed the masters as well.
In 2000-2001 David Gilmour mastered and released the track officially on the 2001 compilation “Wouldn’t you Miss Me?” and again later on the 2010 compilation “An introduction to Syd Barrett”.
An in-depth look at the story of the song is published on the official Syd Barrett website: www.sydbarrett...
For this artistic interpretation of Syd Barrett’s music, Artist on the Border teamed up with Danish artist Jørgen Folmer Neergard Larsen. Jørgen has specialized in high contrast ink drawings “inks” of various cultural domestic and international personalities, including often reoccurring Syd Barrett. Among his accolades the inked tributes have been posted on social media pages belonging to the likes as Elvis Costello, Lou Reed and The Ramones.

The Artist On The Border commented
“Syd Barrett had, as many other of his peers, an infatuation with the prodigal Robert Zimmerman. This is something that I wanted to reflect in the animation. The various templates had Bob and Syd swap places in respective album covers. Syd would appear on the sleeve of “The Times are a-changing” and Bob would be in the striped bedroom at Wetherby Mansions
But as things progressed I started to get a feeling that Syd was not just a fan of Bob’s. Syd and his mates, might actually have tried to mold Syd into a British Dylan character. As described in the “stories behind the songs” on Bob Dylan Blues, there are several links between Bob and Syds lyrics and if one squints, and tips his head slightly to the left, the covers of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” and “Bringing It all back home” appear eerily similar to the photos shot at and around Duggie Field’s Wetherby mansions flat. But I digress.
Syd become Bob with his signs and a simple, effective gloomy backdrop made of Jørgen Folmers inkblots, running black paint and stylized faces of the two. He is Mr. Dylan, the king. Free as a bird on the wing“.

my dad isn't the biggest Syd fan, but he's heard all the songs through me, and he got a good laugh out of this one :)
And my mum! 😂
I got a good chuckle out of it myself. I don't take bob too serious anymore.
One of the reasons I can’t help but love him.
Oh yes...I do, too....🥰❤️💎

Clever, witty, catchy, jangly!! Thank God Gilmour found this.
I wonder how many other gems David Gilmour keeps hidden locked in his treasure chest! 💚❤

You gents have created a wonderful video !! Thank you for sharing it with the world 🙏🙏🙏
Syd Barretts solo career is Pink Floyds best secret
It's secretly more influential than all of Nick Drake s work and almost on par with what VU has done to generations of alt & indie rockers !
Cos I'm a poet
Don't you know it?
And the wind...
You can blow it.
Great song by a legend as a tribute/parody to another.
Syd Barrett was way ahead of his time. He's been a great inspiration for me, he's one of my great musical references. A genius with or without Pink Floyd. I wish he could know and answer me...
My favourite Syd track. He's inspired me to learn to sing at 27 years old and I'm following along with his songs. Thanks for posting the lyrics!
I love how unabashedly gleeful this song sounds. It's very witty and even a little deadpan, yes, but it's also very childlike sounding. Though this song does make me smile and laugh, it also can make me cry admittedly, which is a very strong emotional response, oh definitely, but it's just such an intimate sounding song, and melancholy definitely lurks underneath its surface. The recording itself just has a pure essence to it that I can't fully describe. And that's absolutely lovely I thinks💜
Wonderful funny song and beautiful video. Well done.
Love it, the only Syd song I never had heard before. I own Madcap, Opel & Barrett. Architectural Abdabs (pre-PF) stuff is great too. Wish there was more!
Excellent. Superbly well made video (wouldn't even call it judt a lyric video), and of course one of his wittiest songs - and I adore Bob Dylan, BTW.
Actually, the kind of "Dylans" Syd sings about are quite abundant today, and have many, many different names.
🤐
Agree with absolutely everything you said.
❤
SYD Barrett fue un gran músico un genio del Rock mundial hasta hoy en día gracias syd por dejarnos tú trabajo de arte qué es la música vuela alto y que descanse en paz saludos y gracias.
también realizo pinturas, era un verdadero artista
What’s great about this song is the backhanded comments “cause my wallet and gut are fat”, “the wind you can blow it” kind of indicate Barrett thought the Dylan worship was a crock. God bless Syd Barrett. His songs Effervescing Elephant, Golden Hair and Love Song are all majestic. The guy was a genius.
He paid the price for his genius. Sure wish we had him around longer. Syd is greatly missed.
He's in a better place now
This is fantastic!
Brilliant reminds me of the bull and chain pub, when we used to take a record player in the back room and played music that we wanted to listen to. These days you here of young people say yeah I like pink Floyd then you mention Syd Barrett they say WHO!!!!!
Fantastic !
Love Syd’s music

He touchs my heart and mind. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art.

Greatest dis track!
What a wonderful sense of humour! Dear Barrett Family, may I ask if this kind of brilliant wit and sarcasm runs in the family? Would love to know!
He had “A Hard Rain’s a-gonna Fall” on his brain based on the melody and phrasing.
Well done, Syd. 💙💙💙

The OG Bob Dylan diss track
It's just a bit of fun. He actually loved Dylan.
💕I loved your tribute to Syd and Bob! Syd's 1965 black & white unique pose for his girl friend as he sat beside his big car in Cambridge. Deserves an 8'X4' photo greeting the tourists just inside the Tower of London. Then there would be at least one gifted💎inside the Tower that was not stolen.👑 I'm as serious as my my heart surgeon Dr. Lee W. was who repaired my 💓!
I'd say the rumour of Dylan and Grossman counting the pounds and pennys backstage at the Isle of White festival, with the threat of not performing if all the money wasn't accounted for, drove Syd to write this funny ditty
He wrote it four years before the Dylan concert on Isle of Wight festival.
Brilliant video!
Great video. you really got the ironic sense of the song
Muito, muito, muito bom mesmo! Não parem! 🇧🇷

Got the Bob Dylan blues
And the Bob Dylan shoes
And my clothes and my hair’s in a mess
But you know I just couldn’t care less
Gonna write me a song
’Bout what’s right and what’s wrong
’Bout God and my God and all that
Quiet while I make like a cat
’Cos I’m a poet, don’t ya know it
And the wind, you can blow it
’Cos I’m Mr. Dylan, the king
And I’m free as a bird on the wing
Roam from town to town
Guess I get people down
But I don’t care too much about that
’Cos my gut and my wallet are fat
Make a whole lotta dough
But I deserve it though
I’ve got soul and a good heart of gold
So I’ll sing about war in the cold
’Cos I’m a poet, don’t ya know it
And the wind, you can blow it
’Cos I’m Mr. Dylan, the king
And I’m free as a bird on the wingWell I sings about dreams
And I rhymes it with seems
’Cos it seems that my dream always means
That I can prophesy all kinds of things
Well the guy that digs me
Should try hard to see
That he buys all my discs and a hat
And when I’m in town go see that
’Cos I’m a poet, don’t ya know it
And the wind, you can blow it
’Cos I’m Mr. Dylan, the king
And I’m free as a bird on the wing

Very good
Amazing video 😂😂😂😂😂 Mr. Barrett and Mr. Dylan 0:02
🙏🏻❤️🥀
Beautiful song this. I'm not sure when it was recorded 69 or 70 must have been. Not sure why he didn't put it on one the albums
The song dates much earlier, however composed in 1965 and recorded during the sessions for the album Barrett (1970), the song remained unreleased and was believed lost until it was included in the compilation The Best of Syd Barrett: Wouldn't You Miss Me? from 2001 edited by David Gilmour
@@cinemarco9478 Thanks for an excellent reply. 1965 yeah. I often thought why didn't it go on the Barrett album, cause it had Bob Dylan in it, maybe too personal, not sure but by God it's a great song. I'm wondering who selected the tracks for the two solo albums. Syd or David Gilmour...
@@iainstewart7104 David Gilmour, this I can tell you for sure: in an old interview he was asked why the choice of include those three "abortions" Feel, She took a long cold look and particularly If it is in you... Dave answered that the rest of the tracks available were even poorer and he choose to put those three without backing tracks to point out how difficult it had been to make a record with Syd... Let's not forget that Syd and Dave were childhood friends in Cambridge, that was Dave who taught Syd the first rudiments of the guitar and that in summer 1965 Dave and Syd busked around south of France performing Beatles songs to passers by (all of this is written and documented, try "Gilmour and Barrett in France" on Google) I wonder how many gems - Barrett's or his own - Dave keeps locked in his treasure chest and if he's ever gonna be take them out, as he did with Bob Dylan's Blues in 2001 or the long percussion instrumental "Ramadan" in 2010 in the compilation "an introduction to Syd Barrett". Take for instance "Opel" in the namesake collection dated 1988: that song is (would be) a real gem! WHY it wasn't completed with backing tracks will always be a mystery to me!
Acid casualty par excellence.
Such an ironic song and video
not many realize this 👍
Well I sing about dreams
And I rhymes it with "seems"
'Cause it seems that my dream always means
That I can prophesy all kinds of things
might be my favorite Syd line.
2:19 In a hat? Shouldn't that be "buys all my discs AND a hat"?
Better than all of Roger Waters albums combined.
Roger was always THE MAN ❤

That's one beautiful melodic masterpiece. ❤. Who's doing the back up vocals???
That would be Syd? Just because it's a demo doesn't mean they didn't work in something simple like vocal overdubs I think.
David Gilmour I guess
So he was a fortune teller as well?
wait for more song
Working on that
Funny: my grand father was named Robert and his father was named Roger...
Very sarcastic song !
not many realize this 👍
Its admiration
Basically the same riff as 'Wish You Were Here'
Jealousy is hilarious
As far as I know the first diss track ever
Looks like it even beats out Simon and Garfunkle's "A Simple Desultory Philippic " (1966)
It's funny that Syd knew Dylan was a hack all those years ago
:)
approximately Dec 7, 2020; dylan sold his catalog for what was estimated to be $300 million. cus his gut and his wallet are fat.
Haha influenced by Benny Hill's What A World?
A song about Bob Dylan, that's more or less what they have in common.
Wow! Anyone who goes out of his way to try to ridicule Bob Dylan, really shows how wounded they feel, and how inferior their work is in comparison to Dylan. It wasn’t necessary to spend the time to “create” a whole “song” to express some disagreement or dislike of Dylan.
He loved Dylan.
Triggered much? He loved Dylan just like everyone else of the time. That doesn't mean he isn't above criticism or parody.
Not the most creative video. Disappointing IMO
completely disagree! very clearly a direct reference to the music video of subterranean homesick blues. some really lovely artwork here. only so much you can do in a music video when the artist is deceased and was only active during the 60s n early 70s !
fantastic
