- Hello everyone Jeremy here with AltRider,
I'm both proud and excited to introduce the AltRider Skid Plate for the BMW R 1250 GS. bit.ly/2TZznjD With the new 1250 GS replacing the outgoing 1200 we took this opportunity to completely redesign our skid plate and I’m really stoked about the final design. We’ve done a lot of engineering and testing to create a strong design, with a beautiful finish to give you a truly functional skid plate. I think you’ll agree it has a very unique and cool looking design that matches the look of the 1250 GS.
The AltRider skid plate is constructed out of 3/16 inch, or about 5 mm thick aluminum that is laser cut, CNC formed and Hand TIG welded. The most important aspect regarding any skidplate is how it is mounted to the motorcycle. With the AltRider design, we mount to the FRAME of the motorcycle and avoid using the engine as a mounting location. We also don't build complicated support structures that bend or collapse under load as these will fail under continual use.
We avoid mounting to the engine by using a brilliantly simple center stand mount in conjunction with the robust 3/16 inch thick stainless steel modular frame extensions which mount to both M10 rear Frame bolts and mounts.
This eliminates any load that would be transferred to the motor. AltRider is the only design to utilize both of these M10 frame bolts and we feel this is truly the strongest and best-designed skid plate on the market for real adventure riders.
This also moves the mounting locations to the outside of the skid plate and keeps it from twisting under the motorcycle while keeping the fasteners off the bottom of the skid plate which can cause them to get damaged as well.
The Altrider design has a profile that tightly conforms to the motor which allows us to have more ground clearance and keeps larger rocks from getting in between the skid plate and the motor.
Quality hardware is included and the installation is straight-forward using the provided step by step instructions. Removal of the AltRider skid plate is not necessary to complete the full oil and filter change. We even went the extra step to elongate the drain hole so you can drain the oil on the center stand and the side stand.
Lastly, the skid plate gets an anodized finish after graining the aluminum, it's available in black or silver and works with or without AltRider crash bars installed.

Just installed the skid plate on my 2023 GSA. This thing is a beast! Didn't take too long. Of course I'm 58 and getting up and down off the floor probably took more time than the install! LOL. I'm gonna start tying strings to my tools so if I leave one on the other side of the bike, I can just pull them to me. I thought about making a video of it, but thought it would end up being a comedy sketch, so...anyway, it's on! Thanks for making a great product.

I have several of Altriders products on my R1250GS and after riding 2 BDR's I can tell you they work.
Any chance anyone has a video of an oil change? I just find it hard to believe there's not going to be oil all over the bottom of that plate. I could be wrong, but I think I need to see it to believe it.
After watching this, I have serious buyer's remorse for having got a different brand right upon launch. Alt Rider next time!

It's clear you put in a lot of thought to make sure it actually works for aggressive adventure riding. You're absolutely right when you call competitor products out for shortcuts or straight up design flaws. A skid plate should not be single-use, it should not be designed to fail from medium-force impacts.
No doubt Altrider products are well engineered and well made. I just wish you guys made a skid plate like this for my Tiger 800! Unfortunately, nobody ever designed a skidplate like this for it.

You have to order it with the correct brackets. Here's the part numbers you want: R118-1-1202 (silver) or R118-2-1202 (black)

Yes, this skid plate works with the OEM crash bars.

Just looked at the Black dog skid plate, not even in the same league as the Alt ! Oil changes can get messy though boys. I have a solution that works. Contact me.
Alt rider plz reply that with practice can an Africa twin (dct) handled like a 600cc adv bike on trails

How do you know?
This looks like a pretty stout plate with solid engineering. The AltRider skid plate on my '12 GSA is rock solid. I wouldn't go out on a limb and say this AltRider skid plate is "the best", but I don't see how anyone else would be significantly better.
